The area is cute. The food is mediocre. I had the 5 cheese tortellini with 6 small scallops. The Brussels sprouts, the acme bread and butter and a strawberry lemonade. My pasta came with peas even though I requested without. Had to be sent back. Did not like. My beverage had to be changed three times. The strawberry lemonade is sparkling. You have to request for it to be made still. There was a fly. It didn't taste good at all. The Brussels sprouts were undercooked. The bread was not the traditional acme sourdough bread. It was like grained loaf. I threw up. Barley ate my food. The hostess was watching me like I was going to run off without paying. I went to my waiter and handed my card. She didn't deduct for the service or the drinks or anything. I paid $70 and left. My husband prompted me to go back and complain. From the first step in the door it started- the hostess with zero people skills. A host sets the first impression and it wasn't good. No greeting, poor eye contact, minimal effort, forgot the drink menus. A pretty face doesn't replace effort. Service: Subpar. Management has either understaffed or the servers are inattentive. Minimal visits for check-ins, drinks, and follow up. All of the food came at the same time. That's straight up incompetence. One runner clearly hated his job - another was the opposite. The food was uninspired and so I would not bring foodie friends here. The slanted 2-top near the napkin folding station needs fixing or replacement. Looks can be deceiving. Located on Fourth Street, one might expect this spot to be a charming restaurant with great food and service. However, when my group came here for lunch, we found the inside to be empty (even on a busy weekend), which should've tipped us off a bit. When seated, our waitress hastily got our orders and we didn't feel that we were really welcomed. While I wish I could say that the food made up for the service, the sandwich and pizza were a bit bland and pricey for what it was worth. The garlic fries that came with the crab salad sandwich had too much garlic and it overwhelmed the rest of the flavors. Furthermore, our waitress gave us a bit of attitude when refilling our waters and coming by the table, something that did not sit pleasantly with me. SUMMARY: It's alright if you are fine with okay food that is on the pricey side and don't mind a crappy service. Note: one of our orders was put on the wrong table and was directly put on our table despite this COVID craze. FOOD: We ordered House Burger and Crab Sandwich. House Burger, while ok, we've had better for the same price and better yet a lower price. The garlic fries were cooked to perfection, IMO, it's crispy but not burnt, and was not overly garlicky. Crab Sandwich was good as well (don't forget to drizzle it with a lemon, the magic is in the lemon). Bread was toasty but not to the point that it stabs my hard palate. It comes with EITHER salad or garlic fries (not noted on menu, only regular fries). The two stars off is because of the following: SERVICE: it is a horrible service from the front to the paying bill. The hostess can use some smile (ZUT please assign someone who is welcoming). The server (Gisela? She's old Latina woman) is impolite. Took 20 minutes before she took our order. Did not return my smile and ignored my attempt to converse with her. She did not ask if we wanted any drinks. She did not offer any alternative for something I can't have. She should not be serving. Towards the end, she was all smiles towards this young tall Caucasian man, but when she came to our table to give the bill, the smile quickly went away. I love this restaurant it's just like a bistro in Paris. I love the interior the ambience is so cozy and glamorous and European. The food is well-prepared here. This is the only place in Berkeley that has good fries. But everything was delicious-- appetizers the sandwiches, soup...we also enjoyed wonderful shrub drinks made perfectly and very satisfying desserts. I've been to Zut a few times and everything is always solid. Perhaps more importantly, I can always count on this restaurant if I want a nice, sit-down lunch. If you're hesitant about coming, I wouldn't listen too much to the Yelp reviews. Zut is a key part of Fourth Street, and it's frequently crowded because of its popularity. My go-to dish is the Crab Salad Sandwich with Avocado on Toasted Sourdough. It's tasty, fresh, and just the right amount of food for lunch. I like the garlic fries too, though they are on the rawer side and will leave your mouth tasting garlicky. Finally, the servers are kind and accommodating. My last server wasn't the chattiest, but he ensured that our water was always filled and offered a dessert menu. Come give Zut a try! read more

The waiter was not clear on the word 'garnish' when it came to adding cloves into a drink and then delivered our food with no silverware. he disappeared to get this, not to return. We had my daughter's graduation lunch at Zut! last Saturday. It was perfect for our group of 15. We didn't rent out the whole room, but had the entire booth section along the back wall. I worked with the manager, Misha, for the weeks leading up to the big day. He was so helpful and very accommodating in terms of making adjustments for the child in our group and the Gluten-free guest. The day of the lunch, the place looked great and the staff was awesome. They were very friendly and helpful, even though the place was busy. They also printed up little menu cards for us bc we had to do a prix fixed menu for such a large group. That was a really nice added touch and allowed my guests to know what food to expect. All the food we had was delicious and they brought so much (it was served family style)! Everyone was more than stuffed at the end. Unfortunately, we don't live in the area and likely won't be up there much now that my daughter has graduated, but if I were, I would definitely go back. Service was a little slow but we didn't mind as we were enjoying each others company plus we can empathize with how the service industry has been hit. All of the employees were wearing masks which was thoughtful. Service was friendly and helpful. We had sole, fish and chips, Margherita pizza, burger and garlic fries, and endive salad and Brussel sprouts to start with beer and Maltese cocktail. Kids loved their burger and pizza - they cleared their plates. Both fish were cooked perfectly. Usually when you have breaded fried fish the breading falls apart and separates. This fish stayed in tact and was delicious. Drinks were good and the Brussels sprouts and endive salad were tasty. We had no room for dessert otherwise we'd try it. It does remind me of a restaurant in France. To start you must order bread & butter! The multigrain bread is delicious. We started with the fresh spinach salad. The dressing was light & tasty. Our main dish was the saffron mushroom risotto. The mushrooms were the star in the risotto. They tasted like they were marinated in miso. The risotto was creamy & filling & had small bits vegetables in it. We also had a nice French white wine to pair. I heard it's a new chef & he is adding few new items on the menu.
