I have ordered from here dozens of times. I even ordered a massive platter for my wife's birthday once. This last order (pork, brisket, rib tips) reminded me why I love this place. So good! The fries are great too. There is simply not a smokehouse that even comes close in MN. I recently went to Austin and I'd compare it to even the best there. Way better than Rack Shack...not even close. I ordered here for my wife's birthday in 2018. Super accommodating and the owner made sure everything was perfect. ZZQ is a gem that will not disappoint. Zak prepared a delicious meal for my team at the hospital. With only a few days notice, he was able to coordinate a scrumptious meal of chicken and pork sandwiches, slaw, and Mac n cheese for 50 people. The food was so smoky and perfectly paired with the delicious sauces. Zak really went out of his way to provide great customer service, even letting me pick up before he opened. I'm not from Texas, Carolina, or Kansas City. I'm therefore unqualified to evaluate a BBQ joint. So, now that those snobs are tuned out, the rest of you should dine at ZZQ. I've not had better in the Twin Cities. And, for what it's worth, I've had far worse in Kansas City. I came here with an old friend. We both ordered a two meat/two sides combo. It was achingly more food than I needed. You would think two chums in a joint would talk about the old times, but instead we marveled and praised each single bite we took. Good heavens... it's just so damned good. A bite of the brisket couldn't be slathered in sauce and horked. No... I took each tender bite and swished it around in my mouth like a fine wine. I savored the aromas, the body, the texture. This is just smoked meat prepared to bring out the snob in every real world foodie. Pair it with a selection from a WALL of Minnesota craft beers (not only does ZZQ thumb it's nose at Kansas and Texas, it's gunning for the entire state of Wisconsin on the side). Just step inside, breathe deeply and get ready for good, honest BBQ. (If you're allowed to, bring in a weeks' worth of clothing and let the smoke aroma of ZZQ permeate the fibers. Yup. Trust me. Holy smoke! That's what you will taste here. The ribs were perfect. I chatted with the owner for a bit and he recommended trying them with no sauce. I'm a sauce guy, but I did it anyhow. I cleaned off all 3 ribs as is. Thick, smokey, outside crust, gave way to fall off the bone tender meat inside. Some of the best ribs ever - and no sauce. This guy is good! The pulled pork and brisket was almost as good. Next time it will be ribs and brisket. I did have to doctor the slaw a bit, (take out) too vinegary (and I love vinegar). The beans, on the other hand, were flippin' fantastic. So glad to have some real deal BBQ in Eagan! Honest 5* here. read more

Well worth the drive up to Eagan, this little gem looks unassuming settled next to a gas station, but does not disappoint. Went in looking for some Texas style BBQ and found some Carolina pulled pork and sauce to boot. Brisket was smooth and soft, with the fat just balanced with beef to keep it juicy and tender (moist vs. lean if you're picking the style). The beans are great- definitely something I'll be craving in the future. Getting a toasted bun for the sandwich is a nice change from other places that just throw some sliced bread in the box. A wide selection of BBQ types, in small cups ready to go on the side counter offers you BBQ types from across the US. Carolina to Southwest, take your pick to pair up with your meats. The dry-rub wings were small but super tasty. The sides were the perfect size and the meat serving was abundant. Customer service was awesome. Willing to talk about BBQ between phone orders, and a little sample of what was to come while we waited for our order to be put together. Owner knows his BBQ. Do not look past this small stripmall for some of the best twin cities bbq. We have been here multiple times and every time we have a hard time believing just how good this place does bbq. The 3 meat platter is our dish of choice, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, maybe even some wings on the side. I find myself eating the ribs without the sauce sometimes but I do like the housemade (?) variety of them. Add a couple toasted buns to make brisket sandwichs and I'm in bbq heaven. This place was seriously good. We stopped in for a late lunch after reading the reviews online and were really impressed. I got the brisket sandwich with fries. The meat was perfectly cooked and tender with a lot of flavor. The fries were some of the best I have had in recent memory with a perfect amount of seasoning on them. The wife got the pulled pork with potato salad and coleslaw. The pork was delicious and there was plenty of it. She also really liked the coleslaw, but said the potato salad wasnt great and tasted like too much mayo. She also loved the fries, and ate more of them than I had intended to share. They also have a pretty decent beer selection and a sauce station when you can chose between a few different options. We will definitely be going back soon. read more

Chicken was excellent. Moist and nice smoked taste. Vinegar based coleslaw was good, one warning is the it does have a very sharp vinegar taste which I did like. 2 meat combo with 2 sides for about $12....i got the chicken, pulled pork, fries, and potatoe salad. Soooo delicious and flavorful! Juicy meat and didn't even need sauces to make it good. However, they did have a great sauce selection as well and we liked all that we tried. We are for sure making the drive while in the cities to come all the way to this place! I don't want to disparage ZZQ because I do really like the pulled pork and the brisket. Can't rate them too low for having good main courses, but all the stuff around it is pretty disappointing. The sauces are very strongly flavored - the smokey sauce was the only one I found tolerable. Tangy and hot sauces were a vinegar overload, and the sweet sauce was a sweetness overload. Didn't really taste like BBQ sauce with a mix of flavors, they just knock you over with the sauce's particular flavor. The fries were also pretty soggy every time I've gotten them; good tasting but not the greatest texture. And the other sides are all full of vinegar flavor as well. If I stick to just a pulled pork sandwich with a very small amount of smokey sauce + fries, it's great. Deviate from that by just a little bit, and it's no good. read more

I have a bunch of friends that swear by ZZQ Smokehouse, and there are a lot of positive reviews here on Yelp. So based on all that, I was a bit let down. None of it really blew me away. I got two meats and two sides. With my drink that came to over seventeen bucks. I could have spent less and got less food; as it was, I couldn't finish the whole voluminous meal. My meats were pulled pork and beef brisket, and they were okay. My sides were potato salad and fries, and they were okay. I wish there were more options for sides. They have an array of sauces, which is generally the kind of thing I like most about barbecue places. I tried them all; they were quite good, but many of them are barely distinguishable from each other. This is a plastic cutlery place in a strip mall in Eagan. Not a fan. I was born and raised in Texas and have eaten a lot of brisket in my life. Since being in the Midwest I have been a part of 3 different BBQ competitions and have had the pleasure of tasting ribs from over 100 bbq competitors. Brisket and ribs are my favorite so that's what I ordered. The brisket was fairly tender but was extremely salty and lacked smoke flavor. The ribs were really bad. I'm not an inexperienced bbq person that likes fall off the bone ribs. I like some chewiness but these were way too chewy and dry and the rub was soggy and mushy. Seemed like the rub pulled all the moisture out of the meat. The cole slaw was good and the beans were just ok although my wife absolutely hated them. The sauces were thin and seemed to all have the same base with a little different seasonings mixed in and really lacked depth. Bottom line is that the bbq is obviously reheated because they don't have the volume of customers to serve fresh bbq all day. In my opinion they'd be better off only being open for a few hours a day and serving good, fresh bbq during that time. I think it would have potential if it was served fresh. read more

Im from the south and was in town for work and was really craving BBQ and since this was the only place around I decided to give it a go. I Had the 2 meat special with ribs and brisket and a side of both coleslaw and smokehouse beans. The BBQ is very tender and flavorful and paired with the many sauces that they offer, it creates a delicious BBQ variety. For me, the beans really set it over the top as weird as that is. They actually retained a lot of smoky flavor which was incredible. A lot of flavor in a small bowl. I'll be back for that alone. read more

The outside is very deceiving , it's a great for family's or just a beer and sanwhich . The brisket and fresh cut fries were amazing. I choose the one meat plate with 2 sides They have homemade Sauces in all variety's and they are all great . The only suggestion I would make is the meat plate should be played on a piece of thick bread to absorb the grease. read more

We went the first time last night. It was very good. They were out of chicken.Boo!( The only reason I gave them 4) We had a girl with us who has celiac disease. It is so unusual to go to a place that everyone who works there is educated about celiac disease. She could eat everything but the buns. As we have a vegetarian with us, the owner told us if we cal ahead of time, he could whip up some grilled portabella mushrooms for her. I went there because I love bbq and ZZQ had some of the best reviews in the area. I had the Rib Tips and they were average at best. Flavor was lacking and the texture wasn't very tender. The baked beans were good but I would not take another bite of that awful coleslaw. The people there were very nice and maybe other items on the menu are better. Always a good visit when I come here for a meal, it's quickly prepared, staff is polite, and it is a clean establishment. I enjoy the pricing being cheaper than places like Famous Daves and the food being even tastier in my opinion. It's quick to get in as it's in a strip of retailers right off Yankee Doodle, by a convenience store, donut shop, and tattoo parlor.
