I'm no BBQ expert, so take my review with a grain of salt. I came to this place for lunch after seeing this place being well reviewed on Yelp. I ordered the brisket meat platter with fries and coleslaw. I was expecting a sweet coleslaw and this one was vinegary, so it threw me out for a loop. Fries were solid. But the brisket, man, that made it worth the visit. Fatty, indulgent, flavorful. And I've heard their pork is even better. I tried the rib and brisket combo twice in two days, and each time the food was amazing. The ribs are massive. The brisket is very well smoked and not excessively trimmed. In fact, everything was very well smoked. The actual quality of the meat is superior to any chain BBQ joint. My husband is a big milk drinker and Chase was wonderfully accommodating, even offering refills from his cartoon of milk. I'll a mit I was confused when trying to place my lunch order. Witch really looses points with me. The order board is above head level and angles away from the counter area. I usually avoid these places or do not return to them. I want to see/read what a place has to offer, not make a 5 second decision and not know what I even ordered. I'll try the 3 Ribs meal plate. If they can do Ribs right the rest of the food should be decent. Coleslaw was forgettable, Beans had a good flavor, and the Ribs..Failed! Tough and heavily seasoned. Some smoky flavor. I have to write another review as this place is that awesome! The bbq never disappoints, smokey and tender. Fries are fresh each and every time. The sauces are a great accompaniment to the dish. The owner is the nicest guy you will meat(heh). Not only that but he makes a mean off the menu loaded fries! I have petitioned to have him call it "The Nikki"! Almost definitely the worst BBQ I've ever paid for. I dipped out of a family afternoon get together to run down to this place and pick up some brisket and ribs, enthused by the stellar reviews here but boy was I let down. I walked in and was met by a counter of three guys who obviously wanted to go home early and asked for a pound of brisket and half slab of ribs. Two guys hurriedly went out the back and came to the front counter again carrying some bundles of foil. Out the plop a pound of already sliced and dry brisket and half a rack of ribs onto a flat metal plancha grill and begin spraying them with oil and frying the meat. WHY?!?!? Needless to say the brisket was tough and dry, had not been smoked with a proper fire for sure. Was overly smokey for something so underdone and rubbery. The ribs are chewy, overly seasoned with a cheap spice rub and haven't been touched by fire or smoke. I have had a few bites of each thing and unfortunately for me I'm going to be putting $49 worth of food in the trash, as this place so rightfully deserves for taking my money and masquerading this terrible product as quality BBQ. read more

Is this good BBQ? I guess that comes down to what you have had before and maybe where you come from... Well for my money this is ok at best. Two words; Lowry Salt. I am pretty sure that is the secret ingredient on the ribs. Not that great and way to salty. Brisket had no smoke ring and was dry. More like meat you get from Arby's. Serious BBQ flavor has hit Eagan! Trip 1: I ordered the 2 meat plate (choosing the pulled pork and beef brisket) and both were outstanding, even on their own. With the sauce, a whole new flavor profile came out and danced on my taste buds (to my delight, of course). Orders come with 2 sides and between my roommate and I, we had the fresh cut fries (de-lish), the beans (pretty good), and the potato salad (which my roommate proclaimed was "legit"). Seriously, go visit them. ZZQ Smokehouse is way better than Dickey's and doesn't hurt your wallet as much as Rack Shack. Trip 2: I tried the smoked chicken and it was awesome. I feel strange saying this, as I am a tried-and-true Southerner, but this BBQ was legitimately some of the best I've had. Certainly, the absolute best in the mid-west that I've tried. Brisket is perfectly tender with great flavor and the ribs fall right off the bone. Do yourself a favor and listen to the owner, Zach, for his recommendations for which sauce to use. This is exactly what a BBQ joint should be... no frills, a small and tasty menu, and an owner who interacts with the customers. We went in and I ordered two meats. The owner was out working the front counter and helped guide us to which meats he thought we might like. He also helped us pick the sauces (all of them were delicious). Everything was cooked fresh which made it that much better. Being one of the first few days they were open, we were offered some samples of the meats that we didn't order. I will be honest, I am quite mad that I didn't get the ribs as my meal and only got to try one. It was amazing!! I will definitely go back just for these!! The portions were generous, to say the least, and well worth the money. The restaurant wasn't too busy and the owner came and checked on us personally during the meal. It was a nice touch with a new business. The facility isn't anything special, the quality of the food means they don't need any gimmicks to get you to eat there. Y'all...this is good BBQ. I stopped in on Sunday to grab a brisket sandwich (the dip-your-toe-in-the-water test for any BBQ joint- I'm not spending $30 for a 3-meat combo if it sucks...) and some potato salad. This native Texan was not disappointed! The brisket was definitely on par with most Lone Star establishments. I even tried the recommended sauce- a Smokey Sweet BBQ sauce that was actually a tad too vinegar-y. No problem, though, the brisket didn't need it! Great bun too. Love the bark on the brisket and it was a great balance of fat and meat. I'm definitely coming back to try the whole menu. The potato salad wasn't bad- just not what I'm used to. But that's okay, in my opinion there's not a wrong way to do potato salad. There's no sweet tea, but it was nice to hear a refreshingly honest opinion on making sweet tea- either you put the time in to do it right or you don't do it at all. And that's the damn truth of it, so you'll have to settle for soda, water or tea from the beverage machine, but I promise, it won't bother you- the food is just that good. I think with a few minor tweaks and some time to get into the swing of things this place will be on the BBQ hunters roadmap and will probably get insanely crowded. So I guess I'll enjoy the quiet and the great food while I can! read more

I just found this gem. Very easily the best bbq in MN. I get we aren't in the south but I've eaten a fair amount of bbq and I'm very pleased. Had Burnt Ends, the Sunday special, with fries and coleslaw. All was excellent. I prefer creamy coleslaw and this was a 'slaw with little or no dressing, but that's just my preferred taste. A good selection of beers from 3 Minnesota microbreweries. Also sampled the brisket and pulled pork and all were good. BBQ sauce was decent. Saw this place on my way to work the other day. I love BBQ and thought that if these guys are any good it will definitely become my new favorite. Well I was let down. I ordered a one meat plate with brisket, potato salad, and beans. The fryer was broken so no fries. I tried the brisket by itself to see what kind of flavor it had before adding sauce. It had a smoke ring, but no real smoke flavor that I could taste. The saving grace for it was the Carolina sauce did add flavor. I was also disappointed that when I ordered the brisket the guy went in back and grabbed some pre-sliced pieces then threw them on a flat top to reheat them. The potato salad had some good flavor, but the beans were really sweet and left an odd after taste. I would have thought that there would have been a smokey flavor to them. The one thing that may bring me back for another try is the girl who rung up my order was very friendly and informative when I asked if the meat was smoked on site. She also wrote a cute little poem on my to go box. UPDATE Came back today 3-11 to give ZZQ another try. Got to talk to Zak. Got say he really cares about the food he puts out and the quality. The ribs are great and the pork was great also. Zak also heated up some brisket and boy could I taste the smoke flavor and spice. Ribs were very tender. Pork seemed like it had been reheated one too many times. Brisket was also quite tender and pretty flavorful. The sides of beans and coleslaw were below average. The BBQ sauce bar was great! Homemade with lots of choices. I will return at a more peak time of day and see if the meats are a little better when fresh. read more

We were excited to try this place based on reviews. When we got there the staff was very friendly. I asked a simple question and it seemed like it was hard to answer... just wanted to ignore if the beans were molasses based or bbq based. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich. Husband 2 meat combo. I was disappointed that they reheated the meats on the grill. My pork was dry and tasted old. Husband had brisket and ribs with a few wings. The brisket was tender ribs were ok but yet again they tasted old. He said the wings were good. Our fries tasted like they were reheated too. Very hard. Coleslaw was not very good and we didn't eat it. Reading the reviews I was disappointed to see zack make a comment on someone giving a review. We were never asked how our food was. The woman with the long hair did say goodbye. A owner should never attack a customer for giving a opinion. If I would of seen that before I went to the restaurant I don't think I would of gone. Best of luck to ZZQ hopefully learning how much needs to be smoked to be fresh for a day's business. read more

Went to ZZQ's for the first time. Ordered the combination platter with Texas brisket, pulled pork and pulled chicken. It came with three sides potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans, we got a side of fries as well . Everything was amazing my favorites were the brisket and the baked beans had a unique flavor . Stumbled across this awesome BBQ joint whilst in the south metro. On par with your "hole in the wall" BBQ places down south, but clean! I can't say enough good things about this place! Being recently diagnosed with celiac disease, eating out is a terrifying experience but not at ZZQ! They have gluten free buns AND a dedicated frier for the fries - no chance of cross contamination anywhere. The owner was so kind, explaining how the kitchen works and even going out of his way to recommend other celiac-friendly restaurants!
