This one of few places that has sustained over the last 40+ years. Not many locations left and those that have have gotten an overhaul. Normally I go to the one in the Dimond district but I had some business to attend and was craving a cheese burger. Due to Covid no dine in, and there was only one other person waiting. I ordered a cheese burger with grilled onions and mushrooms and a pineapple shake. I used to order that when I was younger. Less than 7 minutes and about $8 later I had a fresh cook meal better than McDs in quality and cost. The pineapple shake brought back nostalgic memories with the bit of pineapple. I have received a burger patty so dry and salty that it was no where near edible and just today I gave them a second chance and ordered a chili dog. [CASH ONLY] This place is a bit of a diamond in the rough, so I'm grading it on a slight curve (especially since people who rave about it give it 3 stars, I don't get that. Anyway, this particular 1/4 lb Giant Burger (must have been a chain a long time ago, there are a few of them in the East Bay), isn't much to look at. It has an amazing big old neon rotating sign that has fallen into disrepair -- sometimes I think I will offer to have it fixed up just because I love those old signs so much. The inside is pretty run down as well but has a small dining area with tables if you want to eat in. The patties are somewhat small so get a double if you want a lot of meat. This isn't fast food by a long shot -- the usually only have to workers (one cook). But that does mean it's made to order and fresh. I really love their fries -- they are kind of on the thicker side and usually freshly fried. The only thing I've really added to the cheeseburger is avocado, which they heap on to excess. The shakes look really good though. I avoided this place for a long time because it looked so run down, but it has become a staple for my junk food fix. Anyone who says they've gotten sick here is probably lying or exaggerating -- I've been here dozens of times with no problem. They are totally consistent and with just a little work I think they could have lines out the door (and enough turnover to afford more cooks. The have a small lunch or breakfast counter (closed right now) and room outside for tables. It reminds me of a million hot dog/burger diners in Chicago where I grew up. This place should be FILLED with people every day and night, there's little competition in the area. Maybe I overestimate people's desire for junk food, but I don't think so. It just isn't offered in the right way. Call me up guys -- I'll show you how they do it in Chiicagoland (haha, right). But there will have to be Chicago dogs. Edit- As if this food isn't bad enough for me. I had to try the Mango milkshake and it was pretty damn good.Moderation right? Moderation. Can't wait for another month so can try another one. Yum. PS. A piece of advice people and please take this seriously. I went there today and saw another customer get into a dispute with the cashier about the pricing. I didn't pay it any mind until I received my total for my purchase. They do not go by the prices on the menu and that is some serious crap. On the menu it has a Bacon Burger for $4.70 and they charge $5.75. Is that logical that they do not honor the menu price. I recommend you get a receipt and/or calculate your purchase before paying. This is why I go to Best Burger in San Leandro (cause the onion rings there are superb). So once again get a receipt and check the totals twice before actually paying. I will not return there after today. They're lucky I was hella hungry! read more
