We dined here one summer evening. The ambiance was modern and open. The service was excellent. The food was great for the price. My partner and I shared the poached salmon salad with cauliflower, chickpeas, arugula and curry. It was "amaze-balls" (her words). We also shared a spicy tuna roll. I'm normally suspicious of non-Japanese restaurants who add sushi to their menus but in this case, they pulled it off. The rice was sticky and fresh. The tuna delicious. The portion sizes were nice - not too little, not "American" (huge) sizes either. They were in the Goldilocks zone. The bill was reasonable. I'd recommend it! read more

This is another example of "looks can be deceiving". It's a beautiful restaurant/bar. The decor is very modern and energetic. It was pre-Happy Hour and the place was not very full. We ordered a Martini (small, but yummy) and then a Bushmill, which BTW did not taste like Bushmill at all. The fish tacos were plain tasting and hard to eat. The Sushi platter was also very bland. Lots of rolls, but not much taste to them. We were told that the oysters from our Buck-A-Shuck platter were Fannie Maes, but unless they were soaked in brine, they definitely didn't taste like what we've sampled a million times before. Today we had our annual staff Christmas lunch and this year we were booking a spot for 20. We began attempting to book a spot at 10 Acres or Commons mid November and experienced an unbelievable amount of issues just trying to book via their email "system". From no replys to my coworkers emails, to not having the flexibility to book by phone and when finally (after a 2 week ordeal) confirming us verbally at one, we then recieved email confirmation for the other. And on it went. Today we arrived and were greeted by a friendly hostess and soon after by our waiter, who was equally friendly. I odered the chick pea black bean burger with yam fries. My coworker seated across from me (who is veagan) ordered a green salad and asked for the cheese to be replaced with Tofu. For brevity I will only focus on our experience, but we were not alone in leaving less than satisfied. When my plate initially arrived with french fries i asked the server to replace these with yam fries as i had ordered. When my plare returned with yam fries, the fries were overdone. I decided to just let it go. I then took a bite of my burger and was very disapointed to find a patty less than 1/4 inch thick with an underwhelming flavor and little in the way of other ingrediants between the bun. After looking again at the menu just now I see that it was meant to also have guac; which it did not. Meanwhile my coworkers "salad" had arrived which consisted of a plate of baby greens and perhaps a dozen strands of thin carrot slices with very few craisens and pumkin seeds. As she sat wondering where her 5$ worth of tofu was it came out of the kitchen on a seperate plate a couple of minute later. It was one rectangular slab 3 inches across by 2.5 inches tall and less than 1/2 an inch thick. This is apparently 5$ worth of tofu. My coworker and I were left bemused by how lame our meals were. We did not see our server for sometime and decided to just carry on and eat. When our server did return we were well into our meals. He asked how everything was and we provided our thoughts. He was very appologetic and offered to get us something else. Given that we were eating as a group we indicated that we would just finish up. Without further prompting he said he would speak to his manager about our experience. A few minutes later he came by an offered us comped desert. I dont eat deserts and my coworker is vegan, so we politely declined. My coworker asked for a reduction in the price of her salad. I thought that enough had been said to that point that the manager would just comp the meals, so I said nothing further. A few minutes later the very pleasant hostess arrived with the bills. To our amazement both of us were billed full price with no further explanation. We were speechless. I asked to speak to our server and he came around and appolgeticly explained that his manager had told him to charge us full price. WTF? In what parallel universe is this how resturant customer service functions? A group of 20 eats at your eatblishment to the tune of about 400$ and not only do you not make any accomodation to 2 of them for all the reasons noted above, but you dont even take the time to introduce yourself and address the issues. Instead, you send your hostess over with the bills and no explaination? Wow. So I take it upon myself to go and introduce myself to him and let him know what occured and ask about recieving full price bills. He stated that he offered comp'd deserts but would not comp the meals. He came across as indignant and condescending. I pointed to our group and said that given our experience, none of those 20 people would be returning. He flashed a large smile and said "Thats fine sir. Have a merry Christmas" and walked away. Again, wow. I have crested the 50 mark in my time on this planet and I have eaten at resturants on many continents. I can say with conviction that I have NEVER seen a poorer representation of how to manage a resturant. From booking a reservation through to my interaction with the manager, this experience was AWFUL. read more

Apart from that twist, it's the same kind of tour-the-globe scattershot menu you can find at corporate kitchens anywhere, with mediocre execution. Tasteless broth with the mussels. A "chicken confit" that just shouldn't have happened. And weak drinks, so you can't even blunt the disappointment. I subtracted one star for the hypocrisy of it all, and because I feel suckered. Maybe there's a real restaurant going on at either the "Bistro" or "Kitchen" iterations, but definitely not here. read more

The Commons are a lot different from the Kitchen. I got the chicken curry, which was a bit too spicy for me (I am saying this as someone who won't eat hot sauce). It was really good nevertheless. My tablemates got the fish and chips and the Chicken Francese. They liked both of them. It's a pleasant outside space, mostly shaded. There's jazz-ish music playing in the background. It's quiet enough to talk to people. This is the place you go for a semi-formal lunch. It's right near the docks, so it's easy to get to from the museum or the boat tours. I'd come back here, but I would try something other than the curry-it was just a bit too spicy. Otherwise, this was a great restaurant. read more

This seafood reboot is more than a little fishy. A welcome update to the atmosphere and decor of the former Oyster Bar, but service and food quality very much in need of improvement. Our server tried hard to explain the menu and drink offerings, but was simply out of his depth - no, Maker's Mark is not a rum. And the appetizers ordered fell flat thanks to easily avoided errors - not enough cutlery for the table, not enough chips for the ceviche, and no real interest from the server to check in on our meals. We ordered 2 different "steamers" for our mains - both were very heavy on the clams but light on the mussels. My Spanish style steamer was so salty that it was almost inedible, and was ultimate returned to the kitchen unfinished. A restaurant that prides itself on seafood really ought to be able to deliver a great bucket of mussels - other joints in this town certainly do. At the conclusion of the meal, our server forgot our table entirely and we were ultimately left to eventually wander up to the server station ourselves to request a bill. A lackluster finish to a lackluster meal. Wait for this place to work the bugs out - I won't be back anytime soon. read more

I'm not one to post negative comments but people need to know that the 'new' Commons restaurant doesn't measure up to the old oyster. I used to frequent the Oyster patio in the summer - it was Victoria's hidden gem of a patio with fish tacos that were amazing. I should have known that a sunny patio with no one on it means not good restaurant. We sat down on the patio and were one of three tables. The new chairs are not comfortable. It took the server at least 10 minutes to get to our drink order. We ordered the nachos and calamari. The nachos were 20 bucks and didn't come with salsa or pico de gallo. I asked for some and the second manager just rolled his eyes and said we don't have any. How do you serve nachos with no salsa? The calamari was 17 dollars and only 7 pieces. There were more pieces of cut up jalepeno battered and deep fried than calamari. Beer was ok - but why serve Sapporo? That is definitely a wrong choice with so many craft beers here in victoria. Overall, the service underwhelming, food over priced and much lower in quality. read more

I like this place. But one thing that bothers me is, I go here with my Asian friends, the bill comes with an extra 20% survive fee every time. Several items on the menu were unavailable. Service was the worst I have had in years. I travel weekly and spend a lot of time in restaurants and without a doubt, the server we had was slow, uneducated on the menu and had overall a rude demeanour. I tip well 99.9% of the time but service was so bad I suggested to her that the tip was at risk and she then asked us to leave the restaurant then brought the manager over to remove us. If you care about service, I would avoid this restaurant completely. They do not value the customer. read more

Come for the seafood, stay for the MICE!!! Came up for the weekend and was looking forward to the place as our local friends had taken us here a few years ago when it was The Pescatore's Oyster Bar. Although the place has been renovated, in an albeit confusing style, to say it has gone downhill since our last visit would be an understatement! Not only was the service poor, the entrées bland and overpriced, but the oysters that I remember enjoying so much were mutilated, inedible pieces of mush! Apart from the beer (which is hard to mess up) the meal was a disaster from start to finish!! To top it off my wife and I saw a TOTAL OF THREE MICE eating food scraps off the floor during the middle of our meal. I brought this to the attention of a server who made a joke about it and said, "it was an old building"!! We will NOT be coming back and would STRONGLY recommend against choosing this place for a night out. Victoria's restaurant scene has improved so much over the years and this place has CLEARLY not caught up with the times! This place just opened replacing the old oyster bar and I must say that the renovation is much improved. I had the chance to watch game 5 at the bar during their soft opening. Yeah, so.... I was in town for a conference, and I think I ate here 3 times in the week I spent in town (well, twice here and once at the Bistro, if I remember correctly). It's a wonderful place, with creative, fresh food. The menu changes constantly depending on what is fresh and available, and I had something different each night. Everything was great, but the highlight for me was absolutely the butternut squash gnocchi. Awesome Service - we went during happy hour with our 3 and 7 year old and ordered a few times from our waitress. We had to change our order because my 3 year old daughter wanted something else. I had high expectations coming to this place. It was a restaurant I walk by lots and have always wanted to try. I just thought the food was way too overpriced for what you get. I asked how big the Caesar salad was because I was really hungry and he said it was big but when I got it it was so small and not really even that good. There must have been capers in there but they tasted burnt. The dressing was not my favorite- almost sweet tasting instead of garlicky how I like it. Good thing my friend gave me one of her tofu tacos- honestly something I would never order myself but it was seriously tasty. It had halloumi cheese in it and it was deep fried with a delicious sauce. Not sure who our server was but all I know is that she was from Tofino. She was rude, abrupt and kept rolling her eyes with impatience. Great food, meh service. We were really impressed with the quality of the food. It was quite a few months ago so I don't remember the details, just remember we enjoyed our food tremendously. It was in the service where we felt the restaurant lacked. The server was over the top flamboyant and the attention to detail was lacking. Once again don't remember the details but know our server was gushing over something at another table to guests who looked annoyed while our first round of drinks took over 10 minutes.
