The service for us started very strong, and waned as the meal went along. For us the wait staff can add, or detract, from what the kitchen does, and vice versa. Tonight the food was as close to five as you can get but for the average dessert. The service was attentive early on, but once we were set up, our water jug became empty, glasses of wine and water not topped up even once. Finer touches yes, but that gets that 5 star and gets us talking to friends and family about places we eat when travelling. The ambiance is great, the building is most likely more than a hundred years old, the interior filled with brick, wood and old pictures. Stained glass and millwork bring the area of my grandparents youth and I am always a sucker for that. Our fresh shucked oysters were divine, the gyoza great, promising a great meal. Our seafood chowder and burger were great, with the fries standing out, and the burger cooked to "our" perfection. The brownie was a little on the dry side on the outside and a little soft in the middle. The lemon ricotta fritters were just there. Not very lemony, or ricotta forward. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I came for a late lunch with a friend during happy hour, and we ordered a two happy hour items and two mains. The waitress asked if we wanted to have the happy hour items come out as appetizers, and the mains come out as entrees, and I agreed. After around 15 minutes, our two happy hours items came out -- mini fish and chips, and 6 oysters. The oysters were fine, but the fish and chips were absolutely tiny. It was 1 piece of fish, and a couple of fries. After quickly finishing our happy hour items, we waited over 30 minutes for our server come to our table and clear our plates, and the server showed zero concern for us waiting that long. She instead pinned the blame on me, and stated "you wanted the mains to come out like a second course." After asking twice about an update on our mains with nothing done to help with the situation, i ended up waiting a total of 42 minutes AFTER receiving the first few plates before asking for the check. Once I asked for the check for the two happy hour items ONLY (since that was all we ate), our waitress came over and informed us that our mains were ready if I wanted them to go, and I refused. I ended up spending OVER AN HOUR in this restaurant, and only ate 3 oysters and half of a piece of fish with some fries. Once I was starting paying for the half of a meal I had, the server began chatting with us and acting incredibly friendly. It was so off-putting, especially after having such a negative experience with her dismissing all of our concerns earlier. I would not recommend coming here. The atmosphere is fine, the service terrible, and the food is okay at best, if you even get a chance to eat all of your food. We made a reservation ahead of time for two through Google. When we arrived, our table was tucked away in a small corner. We requested a table in their lovely courtyard in the back and the staff was accommodating to our request. We did have to wait thirty minutes but It was worth It!!! The courtyard is a dream and was just the aesthetic we wanted. We ordered the Blackberry Spritz and the Dull and Windy cocktails while we waited for our dozen oysters and mushroom poutine. The Fanny May oysters arrived on a plate of melting ice and the mushroom poutine needed a bit of salt but others wise delicious. The oysters are mild in flavor but meaty and there was an array of accoutrements provided. The fries for the poutine were perfectly thick and crispy. We then moved on to dinner with the Pacific Rim Bowl with poke tuna and the Bouillabaisse. Both were absolutely delicious- rich in flavor and the perfect portion. I don't like leaving bad reviews, but our dinner tonight was awful. To start, we had Vietnamese Spring Rolls. When they came, they were deep fried! with bland tasteless insides. Nothing fresh about these spring rolls. Main, my husband had fish and chips.the fish was good once you peeled off the thick (thick!) batter. The fries were good, but cold. I had Seafood Laksa. It sounded so good, all that delicious coconut curry broth, noodles, seafood. Nope. The noodles were very undercooked. I had 1 mussel, 3 clams, 2 shrimp and a small piece of salmon in it. Someone else at the table also had Laksa and his clams weren't even open. The broth was bland, not the rich savory broth you expect. I found this place on Yelp when we were visiting the government building. It's located in downtown area, so it might be a bit difficult to find parking. I was stoked when seeing oyster Rockefeller on the menu. I stayed in Boston for 4 years. And this is the my favorite way to enjoy oyster other than eating it straight up raw. The oyster was really "fatty", in the good way of course. It was fresh and delicate. And the spinach and cheese topping was a perfect addition to the oyster. Fantastic! The entree was for sure the highlight of the whole meal. Both of us had the bouillabaisse. It was everything I expected, and even better. The soup base itself was flavorful. And each seafood was cooked to perfection. My top 3 favorites were -- fried fish, salmon and oyster. All of them had a juicy center. And I was over the moon when finishing the meal. I thoroughly enjoyed my mussels dish with a side of fries. Everyone else cleaned their plates as well. The waiter was top notch! He was attentive and on the ball which was helpful because we had our 9 month old dinning with us. We made a spur-of-the-moment trip to Victoria this past weekend via the Victoria Clipper. It was an excellent time, enhanced by the pleasant surprise (in November, that is) of no rain and actually plenty of sunshine. We walked up here from the Empress mid-day Saturday for lunch. Oh wow, but what a great start to our vacation. We snagged a table next to a brick wall in the long narrow restaurant by the kitchen. Well actually, I think almost, if not all, the restaurants we ate at in Victoria had brick walls. No wait for table, we were seated immediately. Since neither of us had ever had oyster soup, both JP and I jumped at the opportunity to try this starter dish. It was fantastic - thick, tomato-ey and spicy hot (but not too hot) with, of course, bits of oyster. Absolutely delicious. If you think you are not an oyster fan (like a lot of people seem to be) this may be the dish to change your mind! JP had a halibut sandwich with greens as a side. They didn't have an oil and vinegar dressing. per se, but did serve oil and vinegar in separate shake bottles for your use. Note to my fellow Americans, Ferris does not have ranch dressing, but you can do without and still thrive. JP declared this the best halibut sandwich he had ever had. I ordered the Lamb Burger with add-ons of curried chutney and sautéed mushrooms. I hit the jackpot! The lamb meat itself was stellar (with a pronounced and pleasant lamb flavor) and so was the oh-so-delicious chutney. With my burger, I ordered the fries. These are some of the best fries I have ever had, from their shape to the crispiness to the saltiness. I noticed in the kitchen that they were tossing the fries in a colander-like device before adding to the plates. Definitely a winner technique. You bet we will be back! read more

This is one of my safe, go-to restaurants in Victoria. It's been around for decades I want to say...the service here is always friendly. What I love about this place is the variety of menu options and the value that you get for your food. This is a casual place which is perfect for catching up with friends or grabbing a meal that won't cost you very much. Their Chicago cut fries are always cooked to perfection....it's rare these days to find a place where they know how to get their fries cooked so the outside is crispy (so you will not find soggy fries here!) I've never had an oyster in my life before, and heard that Ferris' Grill was a great place to lose my bivalve mollusk virginity. A group of six of us and one 18 month year old had no problem getting a table, but only because we had the foresight to get a reservation as the place quickly filled up. The oysters were fantastic, especially the ones that adorned the Seafood Caesar cocktails I had before our meal. I ordered the jambalaya and was pleasantly surprised with the large amount of seafood that it actually contained. My girlfriend ordered the Cajun prawns which more was like a sweet potato cajun prawn poutine, without the melted cheese curd. Whatever it was, it was delicious. Our server was attentive, friendly, and had no problems dealing with our group. However, as a few of my friends commented her outfit probably wasn't the most appropriate, and that's even comparing it to the skimpy Earls standard. Our bill arrived and she had separated it by couple, but was quick to let us know that she had entered everything by memory so there might have been some errors and provided us with a pen to help us sort things out. I didn't have an issue with this as everything seemed to be in order, however a few of my friends took it as some personal affront and couldn't believe a server would be so bold as to have us manually correct our own bill. The salmon was marinated in a five spice, maple, ginger and soy marinade and it came with stir fried veggies, basmati rice and some strips of crisp wonton on top. I thought they served you your money's worth as the portions were big. We also ordered the Japanese Breaded Oysters and they were delicious! The oysters and salmon were both fresh and prepared very well. We arrived at the downstairs Grill restaurant right before the dinner rush on a Sunday evening, sometime before 6:30pm; around 7pm, there were groups of people in line waiting for tables, and some were told it would be up to a 30min. wait, so we were glad we got there early. The service we received from this place was excellent - the waiters and servers that we had encountered were friendly, attentive and nice to deal with.
