We have driven past this place many times. We were staying in Oceanside for the weekend so we made it a point to stop for breakfast. It's a cool little historic spot and definitely has the 50's diner vibes. I had the French toast and it was great. Our server was fantastic. Very attentive and kept our coffee filled. Would definitely go back.

Finally checked out Cafe 101. Parking is tight. Arrived around 8:45. Not busy at all, however, it filled up pretty quick once we sat down. We weren't even really greated when we walked in, just told to have a seat anywhere. The place was really cold inside. The tabletops are metal so that made it even colder. The waitress came over with the menus and took our drink order. When she brought our drinks, we placed our order. We went with pancakes with eggs & bacon and Deep South (biscuits & gravy). When our food came, she asked if we needed anything else, ketchup, which she brought. She didn't come back to our table until she brought our check. The food was very poor quality. The pancakes were rubbery. Bacon was limp & flavorless. Weird because the bacon looked cooked. The biscuits & gravy were horrible. The gravy was bland and the sausage was like the size of rabbit s***. The biscuits were so dry. And there was only enough gravy for 3/4 of a biscuit. The hash browns were the only thing good about this meal. Big disappointment.

The food here is fantastic. I ordered a BLT and must say it was very filling. The mimosas are not bad, keep you feeling nice a bit. Should out to Angelica, she has amazing customer service skills and hope that she serves me again when I come back! :)

My visit to Café 101 in Oceanside was a mixed bag of experiences. Nestled alongside the picturesque beach, this quaint café offers a cozy outdoor patio that's delightfully dog-friendly. The service was warm and welcoming, adding to the charm of the place. It was giving nostalgic hole in the wall on the side of the highway in Vegas Typa feel how you doing? As a breakfast enthusiast, I couldn't resist trying out their all-day breakfast and brunch offerings. The eggs Benedict were a highlight, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. However, the portion sizes left something to be desired, reflecting the adage that you get what you pay for. French fries were steak fries that were good but my least favorite style of fry if you must. Opting for the ABC omelette, filled with avocado, bacon, and cheese, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. The bacon, rather than the savory strips I anticipated, tasted more like generic bacon bits, overwhelming the dish. The cheese and avocado were scant, failing to balance the flavors adequately. Despite the disappointment with my entrée, I appreciate the variety on the menu and the potential for other options to shine. As a breakfast lover eager to give second chances, I plan to return to Café 101 to explore different offerings. Perhaps a switch to traditional bacon strips could elevate the experience and win my heart. In summary, Café 101 offers a charming ambiance, friendly service, and some delicious highlights like the eggs Benedict. However, inconsistencies in portion sizes and execution of dishes, like the ABC omelette, leave room for improvement. The sad part is I've lived in Oceanside for a long time and I just stumbled across this place for the first time. I enjoyed a BLT with the crispiest bacon and an amazing root beer float which I have had in a very long time. Serviss was pleasant And attentive from the staff in the ambience has that old-school diner field so that was pretty cool. I got spending about an hour and a half in there just kind of eating while waiting for my tires put on my car. Definitely recommend that anyone passing through Oceanside stop by the diner and grab a BLT and a root beer Float.

Great Breakfast! Really good selection of all the breakfast classics. Lots of seating. Smaller diner with cozy booths and extra seating on the outside. It's a seat yourself as you walk in scenario. Water is brought out followed by some pretty quick service. Servers are pretty friendly and the food is always great!

I don't know how long the 101 Cafe has been here but I know it's been here for decades. So I'm going to keep this short and sweet. The food is your basic breakfast nothing too fancy or any type of mimosa's. The food is probably the same as Denny's but Denny's has a bigger menu. You get what you pay for but going to eat here is more of a going back in history to me because they are probably serving the same foods from the 50's. I probably wouldn't come with a big group because this is a very small location. If you haven't been here you definitely have to come because it is cool to see and eat in a historical building. read more

The service was awesome that's why the 2 stars. The food was not. At least what my wife and I had. Please take me at face value. My family only had one meal and this is what the review is off of. I had the Denver omelet, it tasted like they used egg beaters and the stuff in the omelet was not in the omelet. It was like they cooked the eggs and when the eggs were done cooking them put the peppers, ham and onion on top. Also, I never had caramelized onion and peppers on a Denver omelet (just saying it was not expected not that this was bad itself, just unexpected). I had the house potatoes with my omelet, they were just cooked potatoes, no flavor whatsoever. Wife had the egg whites and hash browns, she didn't like it and her stomach was off the entire day. (Again, just saying) maybe all the good reviews were for other foods at this place. Just based off of my meal, it was not good at all, it was gross actually. My daughter had egg whites and fries. I love love love good ol' diner food. I had the omelette and it was huge, good flavor. My friend had the chicken fried steak and there was a good batter-to-meat ratio. The atmosphere is very cozy. The table for large parties is positioned kind of weird, so there was a lot of scooting, but we made it work! We were only visiting Cali, but would definitely be back if we can next time. read more

Everytime I come here it's fenomenal! Waitress are always Nice! They are always smiling making sure they get your order just like you want it! Maddy is really welcoming and attentive. She was really understanding with my wife's costumize order. I decided to leave the review today after so many time that I hav e been coming here. I recommen the pile up! So tasty and fulfilling. Great little location with memorabilia from Oceanside's past. It's at a pretty busy intersection so sit inside if you can otherwise it's gets a bit loud. Food was traditional breakfast and was good. Parking is pretty limited but there is spots on both sides of the building read more

I hate leaving a bad review and was going to leave at least 2 stars but this place left me extremely gassy and my tummy hurting :( Let me start from the beginning. My fiancé and I came here for breakfast today, 4/22. It's a tiny diner that looks cute from the outside but outdated and kind of dirty inside. I ordered a pancake combo that came with sausage and eggs. Also ordered a side of hash browns. The pancakes were so spongy, hard to cut apart, and not fluffy at all! The hash browns were so bland. My fiancé ordered the eggs Benedict and he is not a picky eater but he didn't enjoy his food. He ate it because he hates to waste food. He also got the home fries and that was bland as well. After a couple hours from eating here my stomach started feeling bubbly and gassy and as I'm writing this review at 830pm I'm still gassy and all I had was a turkey sandwich after eating here. Very disappointing since it's a mom and pop place and a diner that has been here for a very long time. I don't recommend this place and will not be returning. I wish them luck. read more

My husband and I came across this Cafe driving through Oceanside, Ca looking for a local lunch spot. It is a quaint, seat yourself, laid back Cafe which I loved! Their service was quick and the food was great. I got the half chicken salad which was pretty big, and my husband got a bowl of chili which came with cornbread as well. Pleasant throw back vibe, had the chili and corn bread which was alright. However this place definitely has tourist pricing. Compare with Tip Top in Carlsbad. 3 eggs, toast, bacon and sausage or ham and home fries plus unlimited meat all you can eat. $7.98. At 101 breakfast will run you $10-$15. My friend had the eggs and chicken friend steak, toast and hash browns for $14.14 with coffee. On price alone it really is a "me thinks not". If you want to see a bunch of retro Oceanside photos then check this place out. read more

Just ok.. food is super bland-needs seasoning! I had the tuna melt and it was super mayonnaise-ie. Potato salad is bland. Fish and chips were flavor-less... it was edible thanks to Tabasco! It's in a great location... has good history... hopefully they can fix the flavor! read more

This was my first time eating here and the cafe has a lot of nostalgia! So fun! And nice and clean and the abc omelette was so damn delicious with a side of home fried potatoes! I had to order some buttermilk pancakes and they were also good! I LOVE THE DECOR ALSO! So vintage! They had small juke boxes by our booth even though they don't work, but reminds me of " Happy Days"! The service is A+! I WILL BE BACK AGAIN!! read more

Very cool old school roadside diner with a classic feel, and lots of vintage photos on the walls. Tried a grilled cheese sandwich with fries, and shared a malt with my wife. Delicious, and reasonably priced, and the service was fine. Just wish they were open past 2 pm during the week! Definitely recommend. read more

I don't know why, but I was expecting so much more... It is far from being fancy but for some odd reason I was hoping for a good breakfast. My friend and I entered through the side door. The waitress was just pointed at a few tables as if we could read her mind. Then, she found her voice and told us that we could sit anywhere we want. My breakfast plate consisted of egg whites, biscuits covered in gravy and homemade fries (slightly mashed potatoes). The egg whites were pretty good. Can't really go wrong... I was disappointed that my biscuits and gravy had absolutely no taste. My plate turned out to be $8.99. It was $1 extra for the egg whites. Which, I didn't mind at all. I just wish that was on the menu. The waitress was friendly. She only came by three times- to take our order, to bring our order and to give us our check. I understand somewhat though. I think she may have been the only waitress. I'm not sure if I'll be back here anytime soon, but at least I tried. read more

Aweful!!! So we decided to stop into, what we thought was a cute classic little diner, to get a couple cherry cokes and have a little break from our drive home to WA. You would think the one waitress would have been thrilled that we weren't ordering food as the joint was fairly full and she was the only one working...wrong! This waitress asked us repeatedly if we were gonna order food...maybe English is her second language but no means NO! From then on ...well she treated my family like we were waisting her time. I wish that instead of coming here and supporting a local business we would have just gotten drive thru at McDonald's. Lady, you totally didn't deserve you 90 cent tip but we didn't feel like waiting for you to get our change. read more

Chili is worth it. Stopped by here on our way to San Diego. This was not a planned stop but looked pretty good. The staff was very outgoing and friendly. There was no issues with waiting or lack of service. The food came out quickly and was the right temperature. This is a definite stop for anyone in the Oceanside area. I will be making a stop by here the next time I am on the west coast. Very impressed with the home style atmosphere! read more

The place used to be decent for a nice 50's style lunch/dinner. The shakes are good and the service was okay. They've since changed their hours to 7am-2pm, allowing them to focus on their subpar breakfast offerings. Save yourself the time, money and effort and head on down to Cassidy for the 'Beach Break Cafe'. read more

Well. Super disappointed is an understatement. My husband and I decided to try this place on someone's recommendation. Never will go again. The food was over priced and not even that good. The shakes where so expensive. Then half way thru my meal I hear our waitress telling a customer it's cash only. Well that would have been great to know before we ordered since we only had a credit card to use at the time. Then to have the waitress brush it off saying its on the menu. Yes it is. In super tiny print. Maybe a sign on the door or a simple mention of it when greeted would be nice. So we spent 30 min running around trying to get the cash for this place. Then I hear a waitress having her own conversation about "artificial insemination" in front of all the guest and one was licking the whip cream spoon to the shakes. Disgusting. Will NEVER go back. read more

EWWWWWWWW! Never got greeted there anytime I've been. They have unfriendly dismissive overworked ONE waitress! Food that smells like the stuff they spray on the grill surface to clean it a dry omelet. They wrapped my corn tortillas in this red paper that leeched red die onto the surface of my omelet AND they burned my hash browns!!! Didn't even take more than one bite & wasted the rest of my $20.00 order on the garbage. Thanks Cafe 101 I want my hard earned money back! read more

New "management" or so i hear. Along with new management comes a new menu with San Francisco prices. I think the wait staff is ok but something wrong in the kitchen. Paying more for less quality, then service is suffering because the "chef" can't get the orders right. Mine was wrong but I said nothing. Just needed to get out. Also, please stop serving light pink tomatoes and really old pickles with a $10.00+ hamburger. That's a starter hint to put new management back on track. read more

Im a sucker for Diners!!!!! this place is SO adorable and it's been in O-Side FOREVER! They had a great selection of all the classic favorites! I didnt get a chance to sample the breakfast menu...but it looked delicious...I came here for lunch...The food was delicious and was just enough to fill me up! **FYI** this place apparently is cash only...but they have an ATM... I recommend a walk to the beach afterwards...it's literally right down the street.... LOVE it! read more

Super delish!! Just noticed this cafe when driving by, decided to stop in for breakfast. We are here on vacation, so we weren't sure where to go. The waitress was very sweet and attentive. The food was so amazing. We both got the "pile up" I think is what it's called. I also got a pancake and coffee. Everything was made so amazingly and I left very satisfied. Next time I'm back in Cali, I'll stop here for sure! read more

Specialties

This is the 89th year the 101 Café has conducted business along the Historic Highway 101 in Oceanside. One reason for our longevity is that we have adapted to our customer's needs since 1928. Beginning thrusday March 15 we will have new spring Hours from 7:00 AM until 9:00 PM Thursday true Sunday and will continue until we announce our new winter hours. We have made some important changes in our kitchen and will provide the best customer service possible. We expect to make some menu changes soon and are working to make your experience at the Café a most pleasurable one.

History

Established in 1928.

The 101 Cafe was built next to and named after the Historic US Highway 101 which provided access from Los Angeles to San Diego and more in 1928. It began its life as a twenty seat Cafe and in 1937 grew to its present size 60 seats with the addition of our 40 seat dining room. Beginning in the early 40's we began to provide Curb Service which was the precursor to Drive-In service which continued at the Cafe until the 60's. The Cafe looks just as it did back in the 50's when it was remodeled to reflect the Classic Drive-In look with an overhang around the building to cover the cars. We are proud to continue to provide the service the Cafe has been known for and strive to make your experience a memorable one.

I'm a local resident of Oceanside, I've been around for awhile now and have seen how much your establishment has taken a turn. I can only ask why in hell the owner keeps a staff that is so rude to its customer's. It's not a coincidence that you have multiple reviews stating the same experience. I have frequented your place for awhile now and after the last few months It's sad to say I'm done with trying to see a change. Your owners lack of ability to see how much it's employees are ruining what I once considered a place that had value has caused me to never want to go back. I hope that who ever is reading this asks themselves, " do I really want to try a place that takes its customers for granted". I came here to eat recently and was greeted by a lady who seemed to be in rush. I will say there was a lot of people showing up at the time I arrived. I didn't hold any thought to it at first but as me and my wife continued to wait to take our order we noticed we were an inconvenience to the waitress. To keep things short I want to say that I will not be coming back to this establishment. Your team of workers are rude and make customers feel like we're not welcome. Firstly the service is to too slow... Ordered a hamburger without mayo & onions which was sent back 3 times. They could not get the order RIGHT! My party did not get their drinks refilled nor did they bus our table. Lastly, no credit cards or ATM are accepted. I'm a huge fan of this diner. If you've never been here, I would strongly recommend giving it a try. The Trucker's Dream Omlette is outstanding and the service is always fantastic. Refills are consistent and the time between ordering and receving your food is always reasonable, even on the weekends when it's slammed.
