I've been a customer through all iterations of 102 Scone Company from the time they first opened as Canelé. I'm not in San Diego as much, but a trip to 102 Scone Company is mandatory whenever I'm in town! They have the best laminated pastries and the owners are super nice. Their flavors are always on point, the lamination is beautiful, and the pastries don't sit heavily in my stomach even though I'll eat 2-3 of them in one sitting vs other bakeries. I like everything I've purchased from them. My favorite items are the ham and cheese croissant, raspberry almond croissant, and canelés when I can get them but they're only available on Fridays. I recommend checking their Instagram to see if they've sold out for the day. Come early if you can because they definitely sell out. It's a small shop where you purchase your pastries and go. There's limited seating outside of the shop. The small parking lot onsite has free parking for 15 minutes but you can ask them to validate your parking ticket if you plan on staying longer. read more

Very good pastries. I think the best thing here are their croissants (I like more simple/plain flavors. The matcha crookie is very good, but too heavy and sweet without milk/coffee. I didn't like that the cookie on the inside was not fully baked. It was somewhat gooey. The chocolate monkey bread is delicious with the perfect crunch to each bite, and so is the vanilla rum croissant. Plain canele is also really good, but I would avoid if you don't like the toasted flavor since the outside is very toasted and crunchy. The inside of canele is super creamy and smooth. Came here around noon on a Thursday and they were already sold out of so many things including everything I had originally wanted to try. Ended up getting a plain croissant and the chocolate monkey bread and both were delicious! This was one of the flakiest croissants I've had and the butteriness made it amazing. And don't even get me started on the layers in the monkey bread oml. Divine!!! And it wasn't too sweet, so I really enjoyed it. I'd definitely recommend coming as early as you can, so you can get everything you want before they run out! Also the store is SUPER tiny so there's no seating :( read more

Really cute little bakery in La Jolla. It's kind of tucked away in a plaza, but easy to find once you're there. I didn't realize until later that they validate parking, but they do, which is nice since parking is in the same plaza. We got there 45 mins after it opened and there was no line at all. A few pastries were already sold out but I still got to try all the pastries I wanted. A tip would be to go early. I follow them on Instagram and they usually sell out within an hour or an hour and a half. The almond croissant, monkey bread, and the matcha crookie were my favorite but honestly everything was really good. Must be a super popular bakery because at 10:40am they were almost sold out of everything. I was the only one in the shop and offerings were limited. Love this for them. The canele, only available on Fridays, was very interesting. Crisp top and sides with an egg tart consistency in the middle. Lots of vanilla flavor. Monkey bread with lots of walnuts on top was a fam favorite. I haven't tried the chocolate croissant I bought yet but it looks delectable. Agree with yelper who said having coffee here would be great. Even just a pour it yourself black coffee would be a hit. Workers are sweet and welcoming. My favorite bakery in San Diego. Please don't ever leave. I've been putting off posting a review since I know I'll never be able to eat there again if it explodes in popularity. Run by this cute couple, this place has been around for the last few years and is a hidden gem. The hours are so limited, and they sell out so quickly, but I promise it's worth it. My favorites are the canele and monkey bread, but literally everything on the menu is so, so good. So buttery and flaky and delicious. WOW. I had this place bookmarked for awhile but finally came down to check them out. It is a small and humble bakery next door to Rubicon Deli. The building signage over the store is just "BAKERY". They have a kitchen, a simple display case and a kind, beautiful woman who seems to be the owner. It's a very simple business but THE MOST AMAZING CROISSANTS and baked goods. The croissants are delicate, crispy and beautifully layered. These are miniature works of art... and the flavors are perfectly balanced. She is a young korean woman (and koreans know the art of beautiful desserts)... and wow... the stuff I ordered all blew me away. Vanilla rum croissant was beautiful to look at ... even better to eat. Gently sweet with just the right amount of vanilla sticky filling. The swirls of croissant layers were angelic and melt in your mouth. The ham and cheese croissant was a great bfast start to the day with lots of meat and delicious cheese. The croissant layers tissue thin and crispy like a delicate flower. The matcha croissant cookie was mind blowing. Just the right amount of cream and cookie crunch and not overly sweet. Again... koreans know how to do desserts... especially bread. Last and not least... almond croissant. No words to describe. Chocolate.. tons of almonds... *chefs kiss* SO AMAZING. Highly recommended. I was visiting a friend who works in the building and I asked if this bakery was good. She said that I should go get a something right then because they sell out pretty quickly and they are very good. She was right! I like to go biking in the morning when the air is fresh and not many cars are out.  It's cool seeing one of the owners of 102 Scone Company already hard at work.  I took a break from visiting when they switched out the menu for scones.  I found they have shifted back to croissants so I visited again. They are only open Tuesday - Friday now and there is a huge line at 9:15am. Croissant had a thin crunchy layer and velvety smooth soft layers beneath. Loved the sweet buttery flavor.  Among my favorite croissants in town. Cinnamon croissant  was shaped like a cinnamon roll but very similar to the regular croissant.  There was the thin crunchy outer layer and the insides were made from the same dough as the regular croissant.  The cinnamon sugar sprinkled throughout gave this treat a much sweeter flavor.  Very good. It's awesome the owners have a ton of business and have 3 days a week off.  I am glad the croissants are back and as good as ever.  Owners were nice and efficient. read more

I have been coming to this bakery since the beginning! They changed their name from. Canele Bakery and did scones for a little bit, but then they brought back their croissants and canales! Run by a Korean couple, 102 Scone Company has gone through some rebrands over the last few years. I am glad they have gone back to selling things besides scones, but I am devastated they still do not sell the kouign aman, which is my favorite pastry by far from them. They have long, looooong lines on Friday and they move quite slow due to limited staff and small store space, so plan accordingly. Service is friendly. Prices are on the higher side but the pastries are also huge (aside from the caneles hahahah) I got a canele, the monkey bread, and an almond croissant. The canele was amazing, crispy, caramelized exterior with a custard-like interior. The monkey bread always looks a bit better than it tastes since I like the caramelized bits but the exposed bread is on the drier side. The almond croissant is also excellent, absolutely stuffed with filling and dusted with powdered sugar. The almonds on top get a bit crispy and add a savory taste to each bite. Amazing Family run bakery! Delicious baked goods are becoming easier to find in San Diego but it is still rare around UTC area. If you're a college student or a professional in the area, you have to dedicate an entire early morning run to East Village or fight for parking in downtown La Jolla or PB/Bird Rock. However, most bakeries we have still don't compare to the amazing cafes and store fronts in Seoul or Tokyo. The withdrawals HIT hard after vacation. 102 Scone filled that missing chunk in my heart. They put the same care and attention to their baking as the many fantastic patisseries/bakeries outside of the US. Whereas I feel that most bakeries here aim for good quality and plenty of quantity, I appreciate the fact that they're here for quality of food and quality of experience. This was also something I realized where most pop-up spaces struggle with after opening up a store front. 102 Scone company has rebranded from what was previously Canele bakery. I'm thrilled that they've brought back some of their old menu items, like the canele - (imo) their forte! I also tried their newer items and was happy with the overall selection. Prices have increased but not an unreasonable amount. FYI they no longer take online orders. I tried the canele (still great), black sesame financier, hazelnut financier, lemon madeleine, regular madeleine, and tigre. My favorites were the former four items. After hearing so much about canelés, I knew I had to scope them out. There's not many places in SD that offers them, but 102 Scone Company does on Fridays and to say IM OBSESSED is an understatement. It's the perfect cross between a croissant and a cupcake. They were incredible. 102 also offers other delicious pastries like chocolate croissant and chocolate monkey bread, all fresh out of the oven. It's a really small shop that offers mainly takeouts but there's a few tables out front for dining alfresco. It's inside of a plaza that uses Ace Parking but I think since I was just in and out with my goodies, I wasn't charged for entering the lot. Service was friendly and this spot is amazing. The title here is a little confusing because seriously the star of the show, in my own opinion, are their caneles. To note, the bakery used to be called Canelé and they were very popular for them. You'd have to order online just reserve some for yourself. A mind blowing crispy caramelized exterior with a moist almost custard-like interior with notes of vanilla and rum. Then they closed. Then they reopened under 102 Scone Company selling, you guessed it, scones. But thank goodness they still sell the canelés! I've tried the scones but I've never been a big scone guy but they were okay. They do also make an incredible madeleine and these scrumptious little cakes come in a variety of flavors. Whenever I've dropped in, it is the same sweet lady running the show and it's probably timing but I have never seen anyone else in front. She is very welcoming and patient especially when you're trying to order several boxes to share with friends, family, and coworkers....okay that may be a lie...they're all for me. Scones are like biscuits, when they are good they are really good, but they are very easy to mess up. They are also very similar to biscuits, the only difference is scones contain eggs and more sugar. Like biscuits they are not moist but rather more flakey. 102 scone company used to be Canelle, and made croissants and canelle which I liked very much. It's the same owners and bakers who are very skilled they have just changed what they are offering. I came in the morning when they opened and got a cheddar scone. It was delicious, had a crisp crust, and a soft flakey interior. Probably the best scone I've ever had or can remember. I knew I was coming here and set some butter out to room temperature and I'd say an absolute must! If you like scones or biscuits, I highly recommend you try these, or even if you don't think you like scones, it might change your mind. The bakery is run by a couple who are very nice and friendly. Its located in the same plaza as Regents pizza, L&L BBQ, and next to Rubicon Deli. There is a paid lot but I think you can find street parking with a short walk. The owners of Canele Bakery have pivoted to only making scones now versus a larger selection of baked goods. I am sure it was a business decision to focus on creating varieties of just one product to minimize waste and unsold daily inventory. There were nine different scone types when I visited. Single scones cost $4.25 each (plain $3.75), a half dozen was $21.25, and a dozen was $42.50. I chose the scone sitting on the far left of each display case. The first flavor was Lemon Cranberry while the second was Matcha White Chocolate Chunk. A baking sheet containing a dozen of the Lemon Cranberry was about to be unloaded into the display case. I knew that batch was going to be very warm and fresh. Each scone's dough was not as moist as I had hoped. The frosting on the Lemon Cranberry was thick while the green tea flavor was prominent in the Matcha White Chocolate Chunk. I thought the past caneles were very good and best sellers which made it disappointing that they have been discontinued. My experience at 102 Scone Company was not up to the quality of its predecessor so I gave a three star rating for the scones. read more

Just fantastic. Still the best bakery for croissants, canele, and monkey bread by a looooong shot. On Fridays, they sell the canele. Lines start well before opening, so I recommend arriving at least 15 minutes ahead of time. There is no interior space (the selling counter is pretty much right in front of the door, only 1 customer served at a time), but I prefer this in lieu of having sit-down service. A great excuse for me to just take them home and have them with my coffee :) The canele is indescribable. Seriously, with copper molds at $40 a pop & beeswax being such a pain to source locally, you may as well support this amazing bakery instead if you're craving canele. How to describe it? It's like creme brulee but in handheld form. To top that off, the outside of the canele made here are always uniformly caramelized and beautifully cooked all the way through. read more

Don't be fooled: this place does not serve scones (anymore). However, the monkey bread and almond croissants are amazing. In particular, they have a fantastic lamination on the croissant, and they didn't "ruin" this by cutting into it and putting a wet almond flavoring on the inside. Rather, they've maintained the delicious integrity whilst putting a thicker, syrupy almond flour + nuts on top. Absolutely fantastic. Served with a smile and a bow. Based on the reviews, I expected a decent croissant, but y'all, I was not prepared. I was waiting for someone to get out of surgery and got there 20 minutes before she opened. The smell was intoxicating. I got a rum vanilla for now and a chocolate almond for later. The rum vanilla was incredible... buttery, flaky, light, sticky and it was still warm! I think I wept a little. I took one bite and considered going immediately back in to buy other one. The chocolate almond was a meal... buttery and flaky, but more dense than the rum vanilla and packed with almond. I had to take my friend to their surgical follow-up the next day. She had only been open for an hour, but was already sold out of rum vanilla (wahhhh). We got a lime and a cinnamon, both delicious, though admittedly, the lime one wasn't my personal favorite. That rum vanilla one, man, I'm gonna dream about that one. I can't even imagine what those Friday-only caneles are like. read more

I'm so happy I finally got a chance to try the scones. Business times are limited from Tuesday to Saturday from 0900 to 1400. I bought the regular scone. I'm not a scone connoisseur but I do love to eat. Perfect amount of sweetness and texture. Pair well with my coffee. I will definitely go back and I plan to try each one. $2.75 for a scone is priced reasonably. I surprised it's not more for the location. I will go back and I highly recommend.
