Very disappointing customer service experience today around 4 PM. The staff overall seemed unhappy and unwelcoming, and one employee repeatedly made me feel like I was in the way the entire time I was there -- which was less than 5 minutes. While I was getting bread, I was asked to move aside so they could restock, which I completely understood. Then while waiting for my drink, I was told to step outside, which I also understood. But when it was finally my turn to get my drink, I was asked to move away yet again because they needed to return the bread bin to the baking area. I understand employees have work to do, but the repeated interruptions and tone made the experience feel uncomfortable and unfriendly. Hoping management can look into who was working around 4 PM today and improve how customers are treated. read more

Got in just ahead of a long line of people. I had dental work this week and I'm just eating mushy food... So it was time to switch from mashed potatoes... to every soft sweet creamy thing here! Little cheese tarts: small discs in the refrigerated case, 10 of them for five dollars. Super tasty. They are like Montreal cheese bagel filling. #IYKYK tiramisu cheesecake. Super creamy, and at five dollars, cheaper than le Parfait or even Ralphs. I approve. I also got their coconut mango smoothie, which has some Boba in it, as a variation on the Jamba Juice smoothies I've been having all week. Not as healthy and full of sugar, but it was tasty. I still have a chocolate mousse cake to taste tomorrow. Looking forward to having more solid food soon, but in the meantime my soft creamy desserts from here were pretty darn delicious. read more

85 DEGREE BAKERY @ UTC Always a great time coming to 85 degree bakery right in UTC. Lines are long and they wrap around outside. The place is TINY, like it's so small, i hope they decide to renovate the place. The items are pretty delicious, they don't have as much as other locations, but their bakery items are still good. I recommend any of the savoury ones. Their boba is also pretty good and fairly cheap at around $5 a drink. Parking is at the public parking lot, it's 2 hour for free! Highly recommend stopping by. The ice to drink ratio is crazy, me and my girlfriend were deciding whether to get two drinks or one and ended up deciding to share, it wasn't enough for one person. It was 85% ice and 10% cream and then 5% drink. I mean I don't mind that starbucks can put a lot of ice and at least there's a little bit of drink but it's kinda absurd at some point. I ordered a vietnamese coffee with sea salt cream and it was all ice and I finished the drink in four average sips. That's crazy! It was $7 which isn't exactly cheap and I just feel like there's no way you can hand that to someone and not feel guilty for the portion of drink, even if you want it to be cold or want to not overflow, there's a point where it's not even fair. 85C bakery is pretty consistent with their quality and bakery choices in all the locations i have been around san diego. UTC location is most likely their smallest shop yet. Generally, there is a line but it moves pretty quickly. There is no seating at all, so its more of a grab and go place vs a sit down cafe. They are known for their red bean paste buns, which are my favorite and very reasonably priced at $2.50 per piece. Service is quick and polite. I didn't see a "add a tip" option on the display when i paid which is now a rarity. read more

Bakery wise, the bread here is solid. Extremely good when you get it fresh. Often times they are just sitting out so it is a pick and grab. They have bread, cakes, coffee, and slushes. All of which tastes pretty good. The service could be improved, when they are busy the line moves extremely slow. Especially if you order a drink, you will be waiting for quite a bit. The bakery itself is small making it hard to move around when others are inside, there is no seating inside so you will have to find somewhere else in the mall to sit. Overall, the food is good. The problem is it's a confined space with little room to move when busy. The wait time will take a while. Went in for the first while i was Christmas shopping. It was nice to see how accessible all the different bakery items were! I decided to grab a cream cheese jalapeño bread. It was soooo good!! It was a nice surprise to taste jalapeños in the cream cheese as well as the bread! I also got a strawberry matcha. It was super yummy!! I remember in the 2010s when 85c bakery was the newest and hottest Asian bakery in town. I'm not sure if it is the nostalgia or the limited options back then, but their bread tasted a lot better to me back then. Since a few years back, I've found myself unimpressed by their cakes, especially their frosting, which tastes more processed and less fresh. Recently, the taro bun left a lot to be desired for me. It looks smaller than it used to be, but everyone is doing shrinkflation these days and that's not actually my main issue with this bread. My main issue was that the dough was quite raw and definitely not baked all the way through. The taro layer on top was also rather powdery. I did also pick up the multi pack of mini lemon cakes during this trip, and those were still really good, moist and not too sweet! I came around noon and a lot of breads were either unavailable or not put out yet. Service was friendly and prompt. This is a fairly small 85 degree bakery but while cramped it's clean. The lemon cakes are a great quick snack but unfortunately, the taro bread has joined my list of 85 degree goodies that don't hit the same anymore. If the sea salt oolong ever joins that list, that will be a dark dark day indeed! read more

While I love 85°C in general, this location leaves something to be desired. Some of the issues with this location have to do with problems outside of their control, while other problems are completely preventable. As for the issues outside of the chain's control: the location is in a *very* awkward space that isn't conducive towards their business model. The space is wider at one end than the other with a significant choke point at the register with the exit at the other end. They've done the only thing that makes sense for the space: put the products over at the wider end and direct the flow of foot traffic along the walls to the register. This means that the moment you set foot in the store, you're already in line. Or, at least, that's what's best for the flow of traffic. Taking time to shop around *can* be done, but it's awkward to do because it forces you to compete for a spot in line with people who are first entering the store. So, it's really just better if you shop at the pace of the line. If you order a drink, the staff may ask you to wait outside the exit because realistically, there isn't any space to wait for your drink near the counter. All these factors make the atmosphere feel more rushed and not as relaxed, but it seems like they're doing the best they can with what little space they have. The product selection isn't as wide as other locations. I imagine that their bakery space is smaller and that they don't have much room for back stock. The end result is double-/triple-faced bestsellers rather than a variety of unique selections. This just comes with the territory of a smaller space. While I view it as a "con," for this particular location, I know there isn't anything that can actually be done about it. Now, as for the factors that can be controlled: packaging, cleanliness, and service are all issues at this location. Since COVID, 85°C has transitioned its model from the Taiwanese bakery style of grabbing tongs and a tray and loading up your selections to be boxed at checkout to a prepackaged goods style. This is all well and good, but more often than not, the goods are already smashed/damaged inside the individual packaging. Last time I went, I was hard-pressed to find any round, un-smashed Berrytales. Once you make it to the counter for checkout, the surfaces are usually covered in crumbs and dirty trays. The front-facing staff is also either apathetic at best or downright short at worst; none are very communicative and it's easy to leave feeling a bit confused about whether the transaction is over or if you will be able to notice any drinks on the counter that you might have ordered. Overall, I'd say that if I really have a craving for 85°C and have no plans to travel south down Genesee to the Clairemont location, I'll still hit this location up for some pastries... but I won't pretend that this isn't by far the weakest 85°C location I've encountered. read more

Quick bite to eat while waiting for another restaurant at UTC. I visited on Saturday around 1 and there was a small line but not too bad. Ate my hot dog bread while waiting outside for my water. Drinks took a little longer, maybe 10 minutes. I don't think they bake the bread fresh, just a storefront and a drink making area. But the bread tasted fresh enough to me! No inside seating but I'm sure you can find somewhere in UTC to sit. Overall, just alright. It's a really small store so not really giving cafe vibes. But since it's not really destination-based, it's also hard to get to since parking at UTC is a hassle. Not bad but not blown away. read more

Huge fan of 85C, but this location isn't the greatest. Very small area and they don't have a large selection of food, mostly just a lot of repeats across shelves. I came about 15 minutes after they opened and they were still putting food out, so they were behind. My coworker ordered some coffees and they messed up the order. There was no one else in there at the time, so not sure where the confusion came from. Definitely not the best location I've been to. read more

I got the almond chocolate croissant, it was flaky and buttery. There was a good amount of chocolate in it. The price was great too especially because it was under $7! Unlike at other places. The red bean bun was good and not too sweet, but there was a bit too much red bean compared to the soft bun. The coconut almond twist is a favorite of ours and never fails. We can make it last three days. The glaze on top is sweet and pretty. We also got a mango tale bun, but the mango custard inside looked a bit split. Overall, it was tasty. It can get packed during a rush hour, but as long as people remain in a line it will be ok. Some guy was in training but the line still moved fairly fast. Recommend here! The milk pudding bread was definitely not fresh!! I think it might have been a day old. The bread itself is not its usual soft stretchy bread but instead it was harder and flakier. The milk pudding inside was hard and stuck to one side. It wasn't soft and stretchy with the bread. I had many fresh ones before. Taro bread was also old... man. Not sure if I came too early and they used day before left overs?! I did see a new batch on the cart but they weren't putting them out. Or next time just go get those and forget whatever is out. Their pastries are great. The service is always friendly at all the locations I have been to. The bakery is on the smaller side, but clean and stocked. The thing that stops me from coming more frequently is all the plastic packaging. They didn't have everything in plastic before and you could just get all the pastries in one bag. How have I never been here before! My sister and I were waiting for our dinner reservations and we had a long wait so we decided to grab a bite here. There was a line but well worth the wait! My sister loves the milk bun so of course, I had to get one of those. I also tried their bacon and cheese roll and a sleeve of lemon cakes. Everything was delicious and so fresh! I've definitely had a better experience here than most, compared to the other reviews. I've been to locations all over California and Hawaii and I think this location is up to par on drink quality and cakes and breads. Everything has always been fresh. The only downside I've noticed is that they don't always seem stocked up, no matter what time of day I go. It is a smaller location so not having full stock really does show. Popped in on a Monday morning at 8:20 (20 minutes after they open). My partner is having surgery at a hospital nearby so while I wait, I came to get breakfast breads/tea for myself and post op snacks for her. They didn't even have half the shelves filled and I was told they are still baking things. They had no savory options available and only a handful of sweet buns, albeit still warm. I picked up two buns and a hot milk tea & paid cash. The cashier forgot to give me my change and I had to ask for it. When I inquired about more options and how long until they might be available, I was told about an hour. Why open your store if you're not going to have most of your product available?? I realize that most of the shops around the location don't open until 10 so they might have much business until then, but then don't open until then! I would have gone someplace else and not had to pay for parking if I had known they wouldn't have any choices until later. The mango bun I got is overly sweet but clearly tastes fresh and my hot milk tea (half sweet) is barely warm and still very sweet for my taste. This location is small so the selection can vary based on the time and day. It can also get really hot in there so sometimes I've seen the pastries get steamy. I love 85 degrees! Every time I go, the pastries are super fresh and soft! I love to get the garlic and cheese bread and the coconut snow cubes. The cubes have such and interesting texture and such a light flavor that I really enjoy. I will sometimes get a slice of cake too. The cakes are very light and airy. They are not to sweet and the frosting isn't loaded with butter, which I love! There are so many cake flavors, I never know which one to try. The bakery is serve yourself which makes things nice and easy. Everything is also really affordable. It can get a little packed in there but crowds clear quickly.
