Legit. The whole package. Service quick, pleasant and attntive. Food is lovely, wine list is super long ( I'm not wine literate so i can't say if it's a great list, but lots of diners around us seemed to be enjoying their selections). Diverse menu, beef Wellington is greatness. Shrimp ettoufee is really good as well. Table side cheese flambe was fun and tasty. Not cheap, but i believe you get what you pay for here. read more

Went for lunch today at the recommendation from a friend. Also because they are pet friendly. What a great patio and likely the best club sandwich I have ever had. Visiting Waco from out of town I longed for some healthy food. Went with the salmon and wasn't disappointed! Highly recommend!

Five stars on all accounts. Delicious food and a great break from Texas beef. My wife had the Sea Bass (her first time), my daughter had the stuffed Mahi Mahi, and I had lamb shanks. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. Easily one of the worst meals I've ever had and 10000% the worst meal I've ever had at that price point. You will get higher quality food at Texas Roadhouse or Outback. When my mom told me she was planning to have my sister's dinner there, I took one look at the photos on yelp and warned her. It's supposed to be a "nice" place so she decided to go for it. The octopus was chewy and tough (even though octopus is supposed to be slightly chewy). It was cut wrong, cooked wrong, and the sauce was just gross. The salad was just lettuce on a plate with a dressing that was nothing but acidic. So sour it wasn't even edible. The ribeye was so thin and low quality. It was served on top of lettuce! What fine-ish dining restaurant serves a steak on top of lettuce? Lettuce is NOT a garnish! Then it was topped with a gelatinous mushroom sauce (why I don't know). The potatoes were overcooked and seasoned terribly. The broccoli was straight out of a steamer, nothing else. My sisters salmon was smaller than the palm of my hand. She said it would have been cooked better at home. I didn't know you could make a bad Moscow mule but now I know you can. It's a shame because the building is so nice, adorable, and cozy. Sad to waste it on such a bad eating experience. Our server really did a great job. She knew her job very well but she can't help the food quality. I spoke a friend the next day that said that was the worst restaurant she had ever been to as well. I was honestly shocked even with my expectations being so low. I think it goes without saying that I won't be back. I am originally from Waco and love the growth it is experiencing. Had reservations on weekend night. Party of 10. Companion and I arrived early, but table was ready and we were seated. Server took our drink order, and brought then to us. Did not see her again for a while, but ordered appetizer (mussels) when she came back. Once full table was there we ordered 2 more appetizers (flaming cheese and oysters). Appetizers were good. I had sea bass w/snap peas and rice. Not impressed with my meal. Companion ordered soup, and it was not served with the other entrees. We were all half done with our meals before the soup arrived. Service was sub par. VERY slow getting our food and slow in removing dirty plates & refilling drinks. Don't know if they were understaffed that night, or server was just having a bad day. Atmosphere was nice, and so was the hostess. Undecided if we will return. read more

Great menu and atmosphere. A wonderful selection of fish and speciality dishes. All of our cocktail drinks were done well and the wine list is more than adequate. The only not so positive comment is the service was slow, but we did go on a busy Saturday night and enjoyed the meal and conversation You can hear each other talk! read more

I went on the recommendation of the guys down at the Fort Fisher tourist desk, but I was pretty disappointed. First off, the good -- lovely venue, romantic atmosphere, hostess was pleasant. The menu selection is...odd. On their website they bill themselves as Greek-Mediterranean, but it's mostly quasi-Mexican inspired with some other choices -- fetuccine alfredo, seafood curry. No theme. One entree was available with either chicken or "catch of the day", and when we asked what the catch of the day was, the waiter said "fish". Uh, yeah. We figured that out. That's a training issue, but it sure didn't leave a very good impression, although we got a good laugh out of it. Table card with the specials did not list prices, nor did the waiter offer them. My date's tilapia was quite good -- I opted for the seafood curry, which was acceptable, but the visual presentation was awful. Summary? They're earnest and trying hard, but they've got a ways to go. And considering their prices, I doubt I'll be back. read more

My wife and I ate at the 1424 because of the reviews. We will not return. The interior of the building was inviting and comfortable. Except as mentioned below, the service was friendly and adequate. Some of the food was poor. My wife ordered the stuffed Mahi-Mahi. It was dry and the stuffing tasted like Stouffers. I ordered the tortilla soup. It was overloaded with cilantro and salt. A dinner companion said her steak tasted like it was freezer burned. We considered complaining about our meals, but when our friend's husband mentioned the steak problem to the waiter, the waiter insisted there was nothing wrong. It was more important to have a good evening with our friends so we did not push the issue. There were fourteen of us at this dinner, and I must say that no one else had any complaints with their food. The creme brulee desert was also very good. On the whole, however, I expected better - especially for the price. read more

If I could, I would give this place NEGATIVE 5 stars. I don't normally write bad reviews as I know that places can have off nights or be understaffed, etc, but my experience was so sad I made an urbanspoon account just to tell the tale. We came to 1424 on 5/17 for my best friend's graduation dinner. It was absolutely the most horrifying dinner experience you could imagine, and we were hardly alone. This happened to a couple of other tables tonight, and some of them have already posted eerily similar reviews online. First of all, knowing way in advance her graduation was going to be on 5/17, my friend who we shall call Nana made reservations for herself and 14 family and friends a MONTH ago. She has called several times to confirm the time and size of the reservations, three of which I was present for the past few days and we were given a confirmation each time that we were good to go. We show up at 7:10 for a 7:30 reservation to be told our "table will be ready soon". So, we sit and wait on the patio. No big deal. Time for our reservations come and we ask for an update and they say unfortunately people are staying longer than expected and are asked to wait some more. Still, not a problem. We're all happy, having a good time visiting, so no one feels rushed. 8:00 and we ask for another update, still nothing available, so we ask if we can get some drinks. We're brought drinks 30 minutes later when we ask again about a table, only getting slightly irritated. Up to this point, we've been patient, quiet, and only ask for an update every 20-30 minutes, but now we are getting a little frustrated, so we confront the manager. The manager comes and speaks to us and offers us "on the house" drinks for the wait. That was nice of her, so we accept and continue to wait. At 9:00 a guest in our party explains to the manager that when we had reservations we should have already been seated. Begin the craziness: the manager (a middle-aged woman) immediately begins to get defensive and pops off a million excuses "we're sorry", "I'm trying", "this isn't my fault", "there's nothing I can do about it". Finally, we somehow miraculously are seated at 9:00. Drink and appetizer orders are taken. Twenty (20) minutes go by and we are not given drinks, menus, anything. A guest in our party takes it upon herself to get us menus, and while doing so asks about our drinks. Ten (10) minutes later HALF of them come. Waitress is nowhere in sight. We are given some bread 40 minutes into being seated and our orders are taken. At this point, 2 of our guests with 3 small children leave because their children are now out entirely too late (it's 10PM, they have a 9PM bedtime). After another 30 minutes of waiting and still no sign of food or waitress, two guests in our party talk to the manager. They are lucky we've waited this long in the first place. The manager proceeds to make MORE excuses about how it isn't her fault, she can't go in there and cook the food, blah blah, yet it's been 3 HOURS TO DATE and we don't even have silverware. Tired of being peaceful and patient, our graduate ends up crying, and we all leave, outraged. I have been to tons of restaurants all over the country, both cheap and much more expensive than this one, and have NEVER been treated so poorly. You'd think with the price we would have been treated better. We weren't trying to get a free meal, weren't trying to be impatient, but 3 hours and not even an appetizer (especially considering people came in after us and got drinks/appetizers before us) was just unacceptable. The food was entirely too expensive to be completely disrespected and lied to continuously. I will NEVER set foot within 10 feet of this place again. They don't deserve anyone's business, good food or not. That is NOT how you operate a business. Anyway, we went to Cheddar's afterwards, spent half the price, the place was packed and we got a table in 10 minutes with no reservations, appetizers/drinks in 5, and meals within 30 minutes. The night was saved! THAT is how you treat your patrons. Save your cash. Not sure if the food was any good or not since we never tasted even a morsel, but there is no way it is worth all of this. I seriously feel like it was a nightmare. It doesn't even feel real... I am still in shock. It's a pretty place. That's it. read more

We should have known better than to rely on a 4+ star rating on a restaurant in Waco Texas. It was Good Friday and my wife wanted to eat fish. We were to be in Waco for a family gathering so I checked yelp and made reservations at 1424 relying on the rating and the supposed fish offering. We arrive and the only fish offered was talapia, orange roughy and mahi mahi, both in unappetizing dishes. So we ordered a cheese and fruit appetizer, which could have come from a Sam's Club dish, a portobello mushroom appetizer that was coated in inedible cheese and a salty marinara sauce, and a 6 oz tenderloin that plate that was marginal at best. Maybe it was just Waco. I think instead the previous reviews were from people who had never been outside Waco. Avoid this restaurant at all costs. read more

Very disappointed in this place. The lunch they used to serve was better than the dinner. It is supposed to resemble fine dining in Waco but this place could use a good cleaning. It was a very nice evening when my boyfriend and I decided to try eating dinner here. We sat outside on the patio. I was paranoid of the spider webs flowing in the breeze on the post next to our table. The bright flood lights on the ceiling fans spoiled the mood as it got darker. The food was horrible! The fruit and cheese appetizer ($15) was a complete joke, literally HALF an apple, HALF an orange, some store bought crackers and some horribly bitter cheese. I wouldn't pay $3 for that. I ordered the chicken piccata and some sort of potatoe, it came with a salad which consisted of lettuce and a couple tomatoes (you get a better salad at Olive Garden). The chicken picatta was bland and rubbery and the potatoes were mushy and flavorless. Very overpriced and not worth your time unless they make some major changes! read more

I have never had a bad meal at 1424 and have been going here since they first opened (previous owner). I love the Greek flair and I could live off of the fresh warm pita and hummus they serve at lunch time. I wish they would replace this with the bread they serve at dinner, which is tasty, just not spectacular. I typically order the tenderloin with broccoli and Greek style potatoes and it never fails! It's always fresh, flavorful and perfectly cooked. My family enjoys their beef Wellington and I have had several of their seafood entrees as well, all of which were delicious! At lunch time I usually order a Cesar salad and add salmon, which I have them bring on the side with some of their homemade tazziki sauce....it is heavenly. Decent wine list too, and not too pricey for a nice dinner experience. The waitstaff is young and friendly (mostly college students) and the food comes out pretty fast. read more

My husband and I were looking for a nicer place for dinner, and had heard good reviews of 1424 once upon a time. Unfortunately those reviews were a thing of the past. We ordered the fruit and cheese appetizer and received squishy grapes, some orange slices and some cubed white cheese and a green/blue colored cheese. When we asked about the grapes, the waiter quickly retorted that the grapes were "special." The tortilla soup was really salty and the cesear salad had zero flavor. We cancelled our main dish after seeing the grapes, so I can't comment on the fish, but honestly, I'm glad we got out when we did. We really wanted to like it, but we left disappointed that another Waco establishment has taken a turn for the worse. read more

On way home to Austin, we stopped here for a final nice meal before the last leg. The inside decor is very nice with a lot of be red brick work - ambience is nice. I ordered a small ribeye steak - at $22.95. The steak was very thin and cooked at medium versus what was ordered, medium rare. It was stringy and very tough - hard to cut and hard to chew. Our salads were a bowl of nice lettuce and two tomatoe slices. My wife's chicken piccata was also overdone and tough. The food did NOT live up to the setting. We would not return. read more

We always eat here when we come to Waco, but we ate here last night and it was TRAGIC. The salad was bad, couldn't make fettuccine alfredo, gave someone the wrong food and failed to compensate for the meal. While the staff managed to be rude. The food was good, but not 25 dollars a plate good. The service was slow and informal. The guy talked like he should have been waiting tables at the Texas Roadhouse. I ordered the 1424 Wellington. It was good, but not worth 23 dollars. My date ordered a 20 dollar plate of shrimp fettuccine Alfredo. The bread pudding was good, but the bread pudding at carinos is better. Lower prices and hire some Baylor students that know how to speak properly. I don't think I'll be going back. I can cook this stuff home just as well. read more

This unique bistro had a cozy and up beat atmosphere with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. On the night of our visit the kitchen was burdened y their first large party since the opening of their additional wing and although we hardly noticed the delay in services, at least 3 different employees apologized individually to us for the it. We had escargot as an appetizer (or first escargot experience), and split a stuffed trout dish for dinner which was a bit too much food for the even the both us to polish off together. Every thing as well seasoned and prepared. We especially LOVED the tortilla soup. It was so good that we regretted having tried such a soup in a city were would only be visiting for a weekend. No other tortilla soup will ever compare. We so enjoyed this restaurant that we debated re-visiting it on our second and final night in Waco. Great atmosphere, nice staff, 10/10 food! read more

Save your money and time and go to III Forks in Addison! Unfulfilling, bland, and overpriced are words that can begin to describe our experience on 11/04/11. I love Waco and my wife and I frequent many different local restaurants. After last night, our money would have been better spent at the Texas Roadhouse! Notwithstanding the poor quality of the food, service was just as dismally poor of an experience. Our server, whose name I had to read on the receipt because she wouldn't be bothered to introduce herself at this fine dining establishment, was late to our table and with each infrequent stop she made at our table she couldn't getaway fast enough! Watching her one would think that Miss Alicia, "Not Server of the month", was being timed on how quickly she could dump food on our table and flee! Like I said, III Forks, even Diamond Backs is worth it. If you're not in the mood to spend a pretty penny and want an enjoyable dining experience and great food, DON'T go to 1424 Washington, however, Texas RoadHouse never disappoints! read more

Great service really paid attention to timing courses arriving. Apps came and as the plate cleaned salads showed..etc...etc. food was great beef wellington was amazing. Chicken piccatta could have had more sauce but was not bad at all. Pricing per plate seems pretty much spot on and for being an upscale type of restaurant atmosphere is great. Well we went back to 1424 to see our new favorite server in Waco. We were waited on by "Leah". When we asked where "David" was? She answered in an most unkind manner. She said he just didn't belong there and she was glad he was gone. We will not be returning to 1424 as his loyalty to the owners is what we found most impressive and that's what made the food so great. She was not fun and didn't seem interested in anything but a tip. Good luck to your restaurant if this is the direction you've chosen to go in with your service. this was my second time at 1424. i was really hoping that the last time was just an off night for the cook, but it wasn't. this evening, we had the shrimp appetizer which was tasty. it had a bit of spice right at the end that was really good. for dinner, I had the Ahi special. I asked for it rare, and it was, but the cook was unable to get a sear on the meat. it came out slightly grey and slightly cold and not entirely pleasant. the fish was thin and full of connective tissue. it was clear that they had gone for a cheaper cut of fish. my wife had the angel hair pasta with a seafood-tomato sauce. i was eager to try hers to see if the pasta was as over cooked as it looked. it was. the pasta was perfectly cooked if one had no teeth or needed to be fed through a tube. the one shrimp i tasted from the sauce was, on the other hand, over cooked and tough. we had the mousse cake for dessert. it had a good flavor, but the cake was dry and it had the consistency of a frozen then thawed to order cake ala Sara Lee. the only fine dinning aspect of the food was the price. it seems like the cook is just phoning it in. I would be embarrassed to take anyone here. its sad that this is what passes for fine dinning in waco. the waitstaff was friendly and efficient. read more

We hosted my sister's surprise 70th birthday party here for about 40 people. I was worried about living in Dallas and planning a party in Waco but the staff at 1424 Bistro made it so easy. My whole family was very disapointed with the food. We felt like we received a Golden Coral quality of food for an expensive Bistro price. The mushroom appetizer was rubbery and drenched in greasy cheese. The lettuce on the salads were more white than green. The three of us had scallops, pork tenderloin, and a ribeye. The preparation and taste of the food was so poor that none of us could finish our dish. We all agreed to never return. read more

My husband and I went here for our anniversary dinner, not much selection in Waco when it comes to fine dining... This was our first time at the restaurant. Was pretty crowded on a Saturday night but we were able to get a table with no reservation. Huge wine selection and a cool bar, outdoor patio would be nice but we went in November. Service was pretty good, could have been faster. The bread we had to start with looked like some pre-sliced stuff that bought at HEB, not good, and they served butter packets! Expected a bit more from a high scale restaurant. My husband ordered the lobster special, it came with rice and asparagus, he enjoyed the lobster and said the sides were okay. I had the Beef Wellington with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes. I thought it was decent. The meat was tender and had good flavor, not enough sauce, the potatoes and veges were bland. I might recommend this place for a drink at the bar or on the patio but the food is not worth the money in my opinion. read more

I was with a wedding party that arrived for our rehearsal dinner only to have them tell us our reservation had been cancelled. They said someone called and cancelled it (lie). At this point, you would assume that the restaurant would bend over backwards to try and correct their screw up, but no, our group of 25 was give two servers, one clearly not happy about having to work at work (the horror). It took entirely too long to get our beverages and then our orders were constantly being messed up despite the servers obviously writing everything down. If it weren't for the company, this would have been an abysmal dinner. 1424 should really be ashamed of their lack of professional and customer service. The food was mediocre, service was inadequate, and the fact the restaurant cancelled the reservation made it clear that I will never be back there & I will recommend others to avoid this place. read more

Huge disappointment. I know Greek/Mediterranean food and this is not it. Beef Wellington, Étouffée, seafood in curry sauce? I'm sorry, but this is not Mediterranean. It seems you can only get the traditional Greek food at lunch, so if you want a Greek salad, gyro, hummus and pita, go for lunch. We were able to order off the dinner menu and got a nice Greek salad and delicious homemade pita bread. We also order dolmades, a little disappointing. While the Tzatziki it came with was delicious, the stuffing for the dolmades tasted more like taco filling then the traditional stuffing. The lamb shank and salmon were ok, salmon was a little dry. Broccoli was good, the potatoes were ok, but not like the Greek potatoes I'm used to with lots of fresh lemon, garlic and olive oil. The Alfredo was not good so we sent it back. The waiter claimed the recipe for the Alfredo was more European then what we are used to....still trying to figure out what the heck that means. I would like to try it for lunch someday, but for now I will stick to making my own Greek/Mediterranean style food. read more

If I could give a half a star I would. I have eaten here before and my meal was decent. Last week I was will several people and 3 out of 5 of our meals were horrible. The house salad was great with the house Greek dressing. That was the best thing we ate Three of us ordered the Wednesday special which was chicken piccata. The only thing on the plate with any flavor were the capers which, by the way, were the only thing that had anything to do with piccata. There was no sauce whatsoever. When I asked about this missing ingredient the server said the chicken is sautéed in a lemon butter. No it wasn't. It was bone dry and hard as a rock as if it had been in a warming drawer all day. The broccoli was steamed well but again no seasoning. Blah. I told our waiter we were all disappointed. But he made no attempt to correct or offer us anything else. The restaurant was virtually empty. Very sad as Waco has so few fine dining establishments. I hate to see another independent restaurant go under but I can't see this place being open in 6 mos. the service is great but the food sucks. I've had better tasting chicken at KFC. I have never sent a meal back, I'm embarrassed for people who complain, I tip very well even for average service. Tonight, after many times dining at this restaurant, I decided I would never go back. One of the people at our table of 10 sent her meal back without touching more than one bite. I ordered Ahi Tuna *RARE* that was white in the middle. My husband ordered Ahi Tuna *RARE* that was light pink in the middle. We both ate our meals even though they were horribly prepared - and because I never send anything back. I ordered Pork Tenderloin for my little ones. When it came out it looked like small chops but we had waited for a long time so I just gave them their food. When we got our ticket we were charged for lamb chops. I brought it to the waitresses attention and asked her to adjust the price from lamb chops, $36 to the pork tenderloins I had ordered. We waited a lot longer. The manager came out and said since the kids ate their meal they would not adjust the ticket. We eat out all over the country two weeks out of every month at lovely restaurants. I watch people complain about ridiculous things and get their meals for free. I would NEVER EVER ASK FOR OR ACCEPT A FREE MEAL. But this... I have never been treated so rudely by a manager or anyone. I will not go back to this establishment and encourage everyone who eats here to watch your platse carefully and if it's not right - send it back. I'm not sure what is different about this place that I have frequented over the years but I assure you it is not the same lovely place it once was. read more

Overall, a disappointment. We had an 8pm reservation, we showed up at 7:45, and was told it would be just a few minutes. Every 15 minutes I checked with the hostess who said "just a few more minutes". We were a party of 5 who got seated at 9:15 at a table configured for 20 (4 tables end to end). The waiter had to walk all the way around the table to serve on the other side. I felt like we were sitting at a cafeteria table. The waiter plopped down a huge plate of cold sliced bread with packaged butter spilling onto the table. With having to ask for silverware and napkins, off to a very rocky start. We got the bread mess cleared and ordered an appetizer and wine, which were both present nicely. We ordered the Welington, salmon, and the scampi. We were very pleased with the meals. I particularly like the unique manner in which the Wellington was prepared. Before paying the bill, I spoke with the owner about the hostess and seating, and he was very apologetic, took our wine off the bill, and gave us a free bottle of wine even though I insisted that I didn't want anything done. The hostess came back with my credit card and bill and said congratulations, you got free stuff in the most surly manner possible. I left the free wine on the table and signed my bill and added $40 cash to cover all of my original bill and tipped my waiter 20% ($36). This could be a great restaurant with better trained staff. read more
