I have only been there once and I went there based on suggestions from friends, not the reviews on here. Atmosphere is real nice. Waitstaff is very nice and efficient. I first ordered a gin martini. I noticed another review said they only had wine and beer. Wrong. The martini was good although a bit too dirty when I asked for slightly dirty. For food I ordered the orange vermouth scallops with greek style fried potatoes and a caesar salad. The salad was good and I could tell the dressing was made there. My entree was very good. I love scallops and these did not disappoint at all. Cooked just right and marinated perfectly. The bed of rice it was on was very good as well. The greek style potatoes were great. They were cooked so much they kind of melted in your mouth. This is the best food I have in Waco so far. With so many places disappointing me a lot, it's nice to come to a place that I enjoy and am excited to try new dishes at. read more

What used to be a delicious restaurant where one could enjoy a consistently fresh and flavorful meal, is now a place that serves freshly THAWED (then steamed) sides. Their cheese plate is a sad joke. First, context - I've lived in Waco for three years while attending graduate school at Baylor. I LOVE food and have lived in many major cities, including cities in Europe for a year and half after college. So, this is a relative review of a nicer restaurant in Waco. The top non-chain "nicer" places in Waco are the following in order of niceness: 1. 135-Prime (undisputable champ) $$$$ 2. 1424 $$$ 3. Diamond Backs $$$$ ...yep, that's basically it. 135 Prime is the best in terms of food quality and service, but it is expensive. Diamond Backs is expensive and its food quality and service is ... meh (though the lobster bisque and the bar are really good). 1424 is the place to go when you don't want to drop $$$$, but want a decent variety of good food and drink options. 1424 has a pretty good Mediterranean menu with variety and reasonable large wine list. Also, 1424's prices are substantially lower than the other two restaurants on the list--but a full meal and appetizer for two plus wine can easily cost $100. I think my favorite thing on the menu happens to be an appetizer. It used to be "off menu" but has recently been added--it's known as the "flaming cheese," which is a big slab of cured sheep's cheese, doused in alcohol, and lit on fire right in front of you by your server. But, I like cheese, so I may be biased. The ambiance is nice, but it can get loud on busy nights because you are sat at tables that are pretty close together. It has a patio that seems nice, especially on a summer night, but I can't attest since I have never sat out there. In sum, 1424 is definitely worth a try or two. read more

My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary because we wanted to treat ourselves and have a bottle of wine and good food. We walked into the restaurant as soon as they opened. We were greeted by who I assume was the owner, and we were told that we could sit anywhere. As soon as we were seated, the server introduced himself and told us about the specials of the day. We told him that it was anniversary and we just wanted to enjoy each other's company with a bottle of wine and an appetizer before ordering our main entree. He understood and brought our wine ($42) and cheese and fruits plate ($15). I asked about the kind of cheese served in the appetizer and he didn't know, and didn't try to find out for us. He came back a few times to check on us to see if we were ready to order our entree. After about 45 mins of sipping on wine and finishing the fruit and unknown cheese, we ordered the off the menu special, 8 oz. filet cooked medium rare, topped with a mushroom wine sauce which included two sides (lemon carrot rice and sugar snap peas) ($36) and the roasted lamb shank with two sides (Greek potatoes and sauté corn) ($18). The food came out in about 15 mins and looked delicious. Husband cut into the steak and it was closer to medium well. My lamb shank was a little dry, but it was very well seasoned. When the server came to check on us, I told him my husband's steak was over cooked, then the server told the owner, who immediately came over to the table to ask if they could remake him another plate. My husband kindly turned down the offer and the owner told us that dessert was on the house. (Very sweet) We ordered the white chocolate bread pudding. It was one of the best bread puddings I have ever had. Overall, the service was great, but the food was just ok. We were looking for a unique restaurant to eat at while on a work trip to Waco. While our server was very attentive, the restaurant was lacking in the flavor department. It also had a very unique smell. I ordered the salmon with asparagus and carrots. It came with a Caesar salad, which wasn't too bad. My fish was just okay, but my veggies were completely bland. The asparagus and carrots had no flavor - it tasted like they had just been steamed with no seasonings. The only saving grace behind this dinner was the French silk mousse cake (I don't remember if that's it's official name), but it was phenomenal. My husband and I moved to Waco from San Francisco and have had the hardest time eating out. San Francisco had entirely ruined us and, after being in Waco for almost a year, we still only need one hand to count the restaurants in the city that we truly enjoy. Thankfully, after tonight, we can add 1424 to that hand! Some things must have changed since some of these reviews written in the past because we had an excellent experience! I started with the garden salad with creamy Greek dressing. The dressing was fantastic! It tasted homemade and had a nice kick to it. I had the shrimp scampi for dinner, which was wonderful with the fresh, melted parmesan and flavorful, perfectly-cooked shrimp. It was a large portion, so I took half of it home - so, really, I got two meals out of a delicious $20 meal! The only thing I would change is the bread served with the meal. It was bland and dry; however, if the complementary bread is the only complaint, I'd say this restaurant is doing quite well for itself. I honestly don't think the prices are too bad - maybe it's the San Francisco residue in me. I'd much rather pay $25 a plate for a delicious, memorable meal, than eat at another local restaurant in Waco for a $10 meal where they pretty much just empty a can onto a plate and serve it. So here, too, the Yelp crowd is a bit harsh on one of Waco's finer and more expensive establishments. I suppose bistro characterizes the nicer than everyday fare, which includes your standard steak, chicken, and pork offerings with a variety of vegetables. The diversity of the menu reflects Cajun, English, and Greek influences. It's family-owned and operated on a small scale, which keeps the feel from being too pretentious for Waco, though this is somewhat mitigated by their slightly higher than average price point. I try to not go to 1424 if i can help it, but the parents wanted us to go there. Went on a date with my Aunt. Not impressed. Some highlights: a classical guitarist personally serenading me in Italian. The service was good, and the decor what perfect-- the touches were beautiful. The food was good but I could get a similar style from Olive Garden. Atmosphere was welcoming and intimate and met some people sitting around us. My biggest concern was the coffee. It was horrible. We ordered two, they came back so watery and so bland. Like tea. Ordered another round-- new pot. It was exactly the same. But hotter. So they gave us cappuccinos. Worse. So rule of thumb. No coffee. My wife had this on her list of local places to try. We arrived on time and found out that they lost our reservation. Fortunately the woman at the front desk had a cancellation and decided to seat us. Waitress was very nice and had a lot of personality (good personality and an interesting collection of pens). Their actions made what was a 3 star experience a 4 star experience. Food was good but it is noisy inside- all hard surfaces. After hearing wonderful things about this place, I was looking forward to going here for my anniversary. The saganaki was the best thing I tasted that we ordered. Who doesn't love the taste of crisped cheese?! The escargot was just ok. It tasted more like an Indian dish to me (I like Indian) just not what I was expecting. The Chilean sea bass I ordered was underwhelming. The skin was cooked crispy but it was placed skin side down on the plate so it became soggy and inedible. My boyfriend called to make a reservation for us two at 8:30pm on 1/26. Upon on arrival, we were told we could only sit in the front instead of the dim lit back area because they need to mop later. I find that absurd because if that's a closing duty that should be done after you are closed to ensure customers are not all placed in the small room where we can hear each others conversations as well as customers should be gone. With that being said, we then waited 6 minuted for our waitress to approach us which is far too long in the restaurant industry. Stephanie was our waitress which was mediocrely attentive until the end. She asked if we need anything right after we had gotten our food and we said no, then she said are you sure? Then proceeded to walk back to the bar and in plain sight of all the customers along with many of the other employees sat down at the bar conversing with other employees. I tried to get her attention about 10 minutes later for about 5 minutes then had enough and walked over to her. I asked for our check and we left. Even though our experience was horrible, I will say I ordered the Salmon with broccoli and april's potato medley which was amazing!! My boyfriend ordered Fettuccini Alfredo and it was not good at all. Overall, for the price point this is not worth it! read more

Beautiful restaurant, lovely ambiance. We came here to celebrate our daughter's arrival at Baylor and we wanted to make a big deal out of meeting her new roommate. We had a fabulous time. The food was amazing- we had the fried cheese and even tried the fried octopus for appetizers. We loved the house dressing on the salads and the main course was out of this world- I would recommend anything on their menu. The only, single drawback was that we kept feeling like we were being forgotten although we were smack in the middle of the room. We had kids with us- and they were hungry. The girls wanted to continue their unpacking- but that was delayed due to our waiting on dinner. The bar kept forgetting my husband's drink- he had to remind them a couple times. But quality food and beautiful presentation does take time- so that's what I'll chalk it up to. Our server himself was a great guy... I wish I got his name. He made us feel comfortable and talked to the girls about their choices of majors and let them know they made good choices and gave sound advice about the area. Over all it was a lovely evening. We have now been to 1424 three times, and each time the experience was less good than before. Our first time, we loved it. The second two times were less than. A little pricey, but the food was so good we will definitely return. $76 for two with one margarita and food. To start the mixed salad with ranch was delicious, but hubby's Caesar salad was the best we had ever eaten. The bread is to die for. I had orange roughy. It was delicious. One critique I would give is it is served over a bed of white rice with no seasoning. Didn't like that. Hubby had the seafood piccata. Outstanding and lots of fish. Two filets. Two scallops. My wife and I are from the Austin area and we celebrated our 20th anniversary and had a great time at this restaurant! We had the pork tenderloin and chicken piccata as our entrees and they were great! Also had the flaming cheese appetizer and both the vanilla and chocolate creme brûlée for desert....they were all spectacular. The owner and Chef came to say hi and asked how everything was and we met some great people in this charming and warm bistro! Went there on a Wednesday evening around 5:30 so I was one of two people only in there. I was seated and had a great waitress who was very knowledgable about all the wines and menu. I ordered the flaming cheese for an appetizer...it was DELICIOUS!! For my main entree I ordered one of their specialties...1424 Wellington. The meal consisted of three beef tenderloins staggered on what seamed like fresh and light croissants. Served with a rice pallet. The meat was very tender and the croissants and sauce made it even Better! Overall the meal was delicious and would definitely go back!
