Went here cause I wanted a creamy soft serve. Paid $5.5 for the smallest cup (1/2 full) I tried out the cookies and cream flavor and it looked nothing like it. Was a dirty brown color that was not appealing . I also put some brownies and cheesecake bites as toppings. The flavor and sweetness was alright. And the toppings were okay too. So my takeaway is that if you are looking for a gourmet ice cream experience this is not for you. Soft serve can be luxurious too but this is more icy and "creamy enough" to qualify. In years past, I frequented this location of 16 Handles. During the past couple years, less so. It's probably been nearly half a year since I have been there last, but I went tonight for a nice froyo. 16 Handles has the type of frozen yogurt that I like: reasonably natural tasting flavors, cold and dense -- not light and fluffy -- texture. It also has a good variety of flavors as well as fresh, good quality toppings. My standard go-to is half "birthday cake" and half "cookies and cream" yogurts, and usually I don't add toppings -- only occasionally do I add cookie dough pieces. Tonight, I had birthday cake, graham cracker, cheesecake, and Nutella. Yes, it was a decent amount of frozen yogurt, which I ate onsite. 16 Handles still has my kind of yogurt! But, given my time away, I noticed that the space needs to be better maintained and updated. I am not saying that the place is dirty or unsanitary; if it were, I would not go. It just seems to be showing its age. In addition, the quality control of the froyo has apparently diminished: at least two of the flavors I had were not smooth; rather, they were inconsistent, with some small, dense chunks of froyo. I still enjoyed the froyo, and I certainly would return for more. The staff was friendly, helpful, and professional during tonight's visit. Often, you need to ask someone behind the counter for a taste, and the staff member will come to give you samples. I needed to do that tonight as well. Afterward, that staff member stayed near the machines to help customers coming into the store. (Years ago, the machines were always staffed with someone who would readily give you a sample and tend to the machines.) BOTTOM LINE: Good froyo with a variety of flavors and fresh toppings available. Some aspects have deteriorated over the years, including some quality and service, but this 16 Handles is still worth visiting to satisfy that froyo craving. Strawberry to go with chocolate. And kiwi to go with vanilla. They let you do samples, but the guy has to get it for you. Glad he wears gloves. 16Handles has the best FroYo in the NYC(!) and this store on Amsterdam is by far the very best of all the locations because of the staff who are professional, welcoming, and attentive. The manager is particular is amazing - always "on it" whether training staff or mopping the floors - he sets the example for his staff and they seem to respect and also like him. BUT I am not giving five stars because every time I go there the store is HOT. It is stuffy and hot and really uncomfortable. It even melts the FroYo! Fix the air and you'll get rave ratings. But this location doesn't let you get your own. An employee gets them for you. Some other locations just give you the little cups, and you can dispense your own samples. Visited 16 Handels for the two new dairy free (GF, V) cashew based Pumpkin Spice and Hazelnut Chocolate Truffle soft serve. Let's just say those were fabulous, really, really great! The reason for 1 Star would have to be because the "manager" neglected to inform me that the vegan cookie dough contained gluten-- even though I asked 2 times and specified my allergies in store. I later called this location to clarify as I wanted to know the full list of ingredients which the manager would not help me with in store. Over the phone I was informed this cookie dough contained gluten. Furthermore, the icon showing the item contained gluten is very similar to the icon showing gluten free items (this is not helpful). The manager was extremely rude on the phone, hung up on me after asking to speak to her higher up, and cost me an evening of the doctors to address my allergic reaction to the gluten. Hey, there's a 16 handles on the UWS. Awesome. I love this place! We actually used to schlep down to the village to get some every once in a while when we lived on the east side. Love the gimmick and the flavor choices. Plus they have a full nutritional disclosure (not just calories) right there on the unit. It's pretty pricey if you load up on all the toppings, but still, it's probably one of the tastiest frozen yogurt places around...even better than oft mentioned Pinkberry and Red Mango. I am so disappointed in how down hill this store has gone in the past 6 months. It is dirty, they are usually out of half of the flavors and the staff is HORRIBLE and RUDE. They stack the chairs by 9:00 so that people can't sit inside - even though the store closes at 11. People had tried to unstack the chairs and instead of the staff saying, please don't do that, they just yelled at the people trying to sit and said "they're stacked for a reason" multiple times. When they scanned my rewards and it wasn't working, instead of trying again, she rudely started to explain that I will still earn rewards. I tried to explain that I had rewards I wanted to use. She didn't listen and instead spoke to me like I was an idiot. I asked her not to speak to me like I was dumb and asked her not to be rude to me and other customers just for wanting to buy some frozen yogurt.
