    Death by Chocolate S'mores Drink
    Lonnie K.

I'm sure their ice cream is creamy and delicious but this review is solely based on the trending Death by Chocolate hot cocoa drink that I've been seeing on TikTok. Looks great, tastes... meh. Bottom line, not worth the hype! I finally caved and tried the Death by Chocolate hot cocoa from Ample Hills at the Upper West Side location. I mean, how could I not? It's all over social media--people raving about how indulgent and amazing it is, with those dramatic chocolate swirls and chunks on top. It definitely looks like a chocolate lover's dream, but unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the hype. First off, let's talk about the taste. You'd think with a name like "Death by Chocolate," it would have layers of rich, decadent flavor, but it really didn't. It was overly sweet, almost cloying, and felt more like I was drinking a melted candy bar than a well-crafted hot cocoa. There wasn't any complexity to the chocolate--just sugar overload. I was hoping for some deep, dark chocolate vibes, but nope. By the time I got halfway through, I was already over it and regretting my decision. Then there's the texture. It's thick. Like, really thick. I know that's part of what makes it "extra," but it's almost too much. You feel like you're drinking a dessert instead of enjoying a cozy, sippable hot cocoa. It's not the comforting, balanced drink you'd hope for on a cold day--it's just heavy and overwhelming. And let's not ignore the high price of $14.15. For what you get, it's steep. The portion size is pretty small, especially considering how filling (and not in a good way) it is. I made myself finish it, otherwise would've to throw it out but don't want to toss out my money like that. For something marketed as a premium hot cocoa experience, I expected way more but it's pretty underwhelming to say the least. The whole thing feels like it was designed more for social media than for real enjoyment. Sure, it's photogenic, and if all you're looking for is a good shot for your feed, it delivers. But as an actual drink? Hard pass. The cone part at the bottom is not crunchy at all. It's rather very chewy and has the texture similar to cardboard. If you like cardboard, then sure go ahead and take a huge bite out of it. There are definitely way better hot cocoa options out there that don't sacrifice flavors and your wallet for looks. I wouldn't go out of my way for this one again. Been told by staff that people actually call the store beforehand to make sure that there're still available RSVPs for this overhyped hot cocoa dessert drink. There're limited quantities and only available during the weekends. I totally get it about reserving a brunch spot with your girlies or reserving your favorite restaurant to dine in with your significant other. But, I'm not sure about reserving for a smallish + pricey + overhyped hot cocoa drink. Staff's service is very friendly, patient and fast though. There're several chairs, benches, and tables inside for the seating area. Definitely a very warm and clean space. No restroom for customers. Can ask staff for water if you're thirsty. Can pay with cash and credit/debit card. Lastly, it's conveniently located near the 1 train.

I've seen a lot of Instagram ads for Ample Hills Creamery, and their Death by Chocolate campaign caught my attention. It launched around Christmas and promoted hot chocolate-based ice creams. However, the ads they used on Instagram were AI-generated, which was a bit off-putting. Still, I decided to check it out in person. The shop itself matches the whimsical, over-the-top aesthetic they advertise. I visited at the end of January for their Valentine's event, which featured heart decorations and themed promotions. The location I went to, on the Upper West Side, was on the pricey side--around $15 for ice cream. Given how much they invest in marketing and themed experiences (including employees dressed in winged Cupid-style costumes), I figured the price was part of the appeal. I first tried a free sample of Love at First Bite. It had a cherry jelly-like swirl mixed into what tasted like strawberry ice cream. It was extremely sweet, with an artificial flavor that stood out. It was fine as a free sample, but it didn't leave a strong impression. Wanting something more, I ordered the Valentine Chill, their featured item at the time. This was the $15 option. When I got it, the ice cream was already melting and somewhat soupy, likely due to the overload of toppings. It was packed with cookie pieces, salted caramel covered in yogurt, and caramelized Twix-like cookie bits. The flavor was intensely sweet, with a syrupy, gooey consistency from the caramel, a slight saltiness from the pretzel bites, and a noticeable crunch. If you've ever had Ben & Jerry's Netflix & Chill ice cream, this had a similar vibe but with a strawberry flavor twist. Would I return? Probably only if they had another campaign like Death by Chocolate. Otherwise, I wouldn't pay this much for ice cream again based on my experience. That said, the customer service was great--staff were attentive--and I did accumulate points for a future visit. This is more of a novelty spot, ideal for a date, a themed outing, or a place to take kids. It's less about the ice cream itself and more about the experience and aesthetics.

Must try: Sweet Cream & Cookies! Why: Loved the Sweet Cream & Cookies as it was deliciously sweet with chunks of Oreos. Def satisfied my sweet tooth! Notes: Nice and clean ice cream parlor with indoor seating. I went around 6:30pm on a Friday and there was no line. I appreciated they had a kid size scoop since I was full from dinner and drinks but wanted something sweet.

Pretty good ice cream spot. The marshmallow ice cream was pretty good but overall it was sweet.

Delicious ice creamv and plenty of options. Got the flight, which is 6 mini scoops. Regular cones are free! My favorites were the sweet cream and cookies and the oatmeal lace but they were all great. $10 in the city is a great price I think.

How can it be that every single hire here is simply "phoning it in"? No smiles. Zero graciousness and the real KICKER is that they haven't a CLUE how to relate to CHILDREN!! See kids, excitedly order at the counter only to be met with blank stairs makes this the most depressing ice cream shop EVER! The eight dollar price tag for a small cone was also not fun. One and done.

Another good experience at Ample Hills! When I arrived I parked on the street a couple blocks away. I walked into the spot and was greeted. We were served the butter peacan ice cream and the Death by Chocolate chilled. Both ice cream treats were really good! We had a good experience all in all!

Vibe: 7/10 - they get extra points because they have seating, but it's nothing special Service: 7.75/10 Value: 7.5/10 - good quantity for the price in NYC! But not the best deal I've ever seen Where this place truly excels is their flavors! There were so many options, I had a hard time choosing. I'll definitely be back! Chocolate milk and cookies: 10/10 Chocolate fudge: 9.5/10 Overall: 8.35/10 (4.18/5)

Cons: smaller scoops of ice cream and poor unfriendly service. The flavors are incredible! I got peppermint and the Moose chocolate one with pretzels and dark chocolate. They went great together. The sugar cone was great too. I wish the portions were a little larger. Service was grumpy. No fun. Come on, it's an ice cream store! The samples I asked for were not even a teaspoon. Not even fun to try, nor was there enough I could try. Good music inside. Plenty of seating.

I came here a couple of days ago and I loved it. The employee was very nice and patient. It was my friend first time and she was really nice. The place inside is very family friendly with different board games. The ice cream was delicious and fresh. I would definitely recommend this place.

So happy to try this neighborhood ice cream shop. The service was friendly. She was chatty and offered samples to help me decide on a flavor. I enjoyed my peppermint chip and cookie au lait. The ice cream was creamy, delicious and loaded with chunks. Just the way I like my one cream!

Even in December cannot stop spoke from enjoying delicious ice cream! Me and some friends were walking by and one of my friends persuaded us to trying out some flavors and some of my friends ended up buying. You're able to try out the flavors before purchasing and they have a various amount of mixed favors that was so delicious. The place is buzzing with music and seating is available as well. Service was attentive as well and helped with our asks. I didn't purchase that day but will be back when an ice cream fix is needed!

There are different types of cold treats: gelatos and more slushie like consistency frozen confections that are served in a cup. My vegan friend appreciated that he could choose from multiple vegan flavors, not just be limited to the one and only offering, which is what most places usually have. Melon flavor was incredible. Tasted like frozen melon was crushed with ice and chopped into an ice/smoothie blend. Super refreshing. Very sweet, though. All flavors are very sweet, so a small portion can be shared and you will feel satisfied. I personally enjoyed their in-house special flavor of gelato: honey cream with crushed almonds, pistachios, and hazelnuts. That was bombastic! Love how nutty the consistency was. I love nuts, so this almost reminded me of a chunky peanut butter situation: just more fine grained and smooth, with gelato being the base. Highly recommend trying this flavor! Focacia was okay. A bit too dry and bland for my liking, but still decent. My favorite item was the pistachio bombolone which is officially now my favorite dessert. This was magnificent! The yeasty dough was so light and airy--perfectly light and balanced. The filling of pistachio cream was very delicate and not sweet at all, which was such a nice surprise. I do not like saccharine dessert. The fresh raspberry jam was a perfect balance to the pistachio cream. I never like jams in my desserts, but this was a perfect complement. Woooow, what a treat! Can't wait to return for it and to try more of their other flavors--hazelnut & chocolate, coconut, white chocolate, tiramisu. You could taste the superb quality of the ingredients. Highly recommend.
