I came here all anxious because I had green bluish hair and I needed it to go back to brown. I had purple hair and my friend tried to strip it and it turned green.. it was so messed up. Caitlin made sure not to use harsh products in my hair. My hair is so damaged and she was so gentle. I've been to so many bad hair salons that have ruined my hair, and this place made me realize I'm never going anywhere else. They are amazing here. Caitlin has helped me so much. I don't know how the word has not spread further about 1604 Salon. But when I share my praise for the salon, people do seem to recognize, "It's near Fuji Restaurant." Yup. That's the one. So how come you've not tried it yet? I've never been to a salon where the atmosphere was pure zen and yet the staff was so upbeat! The aesthetic here is Newbury St., but the aura here is all down-home Quincy goodness. Maybe they were pulling out all the stops for Spa Week, but I cannot wait to return here during "regular season" for a cut and maybe a waxing to see if I was getting the real deal.... For the spa week special, I got a shampoo, cut, and make-up application for fifty moneys. Priscilla was the petite and sprightly hairdresser who took the time to understand my hair and its mojo, as well as how I wanted to look when I walked out the door. She did a fantastic job and her work was quick but polished. I then got a new face by Hillary. Heaven is surely missing an angel with a make-up brush. I am usually allergic to people coming anywhere close to my eye area, especially with small instruments, but she put me completely at ease, made the make-up lesson as educational as it was accessible, and I think the make-up she chose for me was absolutely slammin'. The waiting area with Keureg teas and coffees as well as a good selection of updated periodicals (e.g. none of the magazine covers were asking whether or not Kate and Jon were going to stay together for the sake of the children) were the icing on the cake for me. My haircut came out looking disastrous. I came here as a last minute decision because the next day I was going on vacation to California. First, I'll name the pros then the many cons. Pros - I called last minute and they squeezed me in - Service was friendly Cons - The hairdresser cut my hair suspiciously too quick - I requested a simple trim ( I have long layers). She gave me short, uneven, BLUNT and choppy layers. My hair was completely uneven and shorter than what I had asked for. It did not blend at all. The layers fell like a flight of stairs - All of my friends noticed how horribly uneven my hair was Lesson learned: stick to the salon you trust no matter how last minute the decision is. I was on vacation with a bad haircut. Due to the bad quality of my haircut, I had to wait a month for it to grow out a bit to get it fixed elsewhere. read more

A co-worker of mine gets her haircut here and I was in need of a trim so I thought I would check it out. As I have been in the process of growing my hair out, I haven't had a regular stylist for quite some time. I dropped by around 1:30 on a Saturday asking if they had any room for a walk-in and was happy to hear they could take me at 2pm. The receptionist as well as another woman in the front (maybe the owner?) were extremely friendly. Good magazine selection in the waiting area and a K-cup machine, which is always a plus. The girl who shampooed my hair did a great job - the scalp massage she gave was probably one of the best ones I have had, as good as one you'd get at a more expensive salon on Newbury. My stylist was Elaine. She was easy to consult with and understood my hair problems and had great suggestions (I have long, extremely fine hair that tangles just by looking at it). The cut she did was fantastic and she gave me some great styling and product tips, but wasn't overly pushy about trying to get me to buy them. She gave me a referral coupon for 15% off my next service if I refer a friend. Overall a good experience - very clean salon (the shampoo girl was sweeping and wiping off counters non-stop) and very friendly, knowledgeable staff. Will definitely be going back. read more

Walking in the door for the first and second time, I felt that I was being snubbed. I had called and made appointments both times. They gave me Effie the first time. I told her I wanted a small trim to keep it clean, that I didn't want too much length taken off. Effie seemed irritated by this. She did a good job, nothing spectacular. But her attitude and unfriendliness wasn't fun. I still decided to see her again since she followed direction. The next time I went in, I told her I was a little bored and wanted to change it up a bit. She remembered me and rudely told me "You can't change it up if you want to keep the length." I didn't say anything about the length. I simple said, I was bored and wanted a change. She could have either a) Let me finish explaining what I wanted or b) If she felt the need to interrupt me, ask me if I was considering taking some length off. But I guess politeness doesn't go very far with her. The salon was clean looking; Nothing to die for, but good. They ask to take your coat when you first arrive and hang it in the back; however it's freezing in the waiting area in the middle of winter since it's next to the window. (You are sitting in the store front) I stopped going here after my second visit and haven't looked back! read more

I was so sick of getting my hair done and spending $200+ on a cut and color only to leave the salon feeling disappointed and my hair looking exactly the same. I made an appointment at 1604 Salon on the advice of a coworker. I called to book my appointment and asked to be booked with a stylist that specialized in color. They booked me with Priscilla and I couldn't have been happier. I've been seeing Priscilla now for almost 3 years and I NEVER leave the salon feeling anything less than beautiful! She gets my highlights right down to the root, which is a major pet peeve of mine when stylists can't. Priscilla also cuts my hair perfectly! I've never left upset because too many inches were cut off or not enough! The hair color line that 1604 uses doesn't fry my hair (I'm a "blonde") and doesn't fade after a few weeks. I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair color before! 1604 also has great products and they seem to be a Little ahead of the game when it comes to new products. Priscilla introduced me to Moroccan Oil and I was instantly hooked! I got quite a few of my friends hooked on it as well! When it came time for me to buy a new straightener Priscilla also took the time to give me suggestions, which I of course listened too and couldn't have found such an amazing straightener without her! The Salon's atmosphere is a little laid back. No one is snobby. They always have great magazines so I get to catch up on my favorite celebrity gossip or the latest fashion trends. All of the stylist seem very nice and friendly and I've never seen anyone walk out of there with a "bad" cut or color job. Linhah (she works at the desk) is super friendly and always seems to remember you when you come into the Salon, which is awesome considering the high amount of traffic they see throughout the day. I find all of the prices to be very reasonable. I never feel like I've paid too much for the services I get and I always leave happy! After years of Newbury Street salons, I was thrilled to find this place. I tried a number of their stylists before settling on Effie. She is an expert in both color and style. I actually have people stop me and ask me who does my hair!!! Effie is a bit reserved at times so that may account for some of the negative personality comments. I have been going to her for 5 years and have never encountered a problem - this means a lot since I far from the easiest person to please! I also highly recommend Hillary, their esthetician. LOVE IT! Very classy and fun experience. Ditch the Allure spa and go here. These are professionals. I went for a Pure Indulgence package and I highly recommend it. Everyone that works there is really nice. The massage with Eddie fixed up my back and did an excellent job with my facial and make up application as well. Everyone was WOWed with my transformation! Excellent haircut, hair washing and coloring. If you feel you need a makeover and don't know what to do, this is the place to go. They know their stuff. I have traveled all over the world and have been to spas everywhere. For a botique spa, these guys have it just right. Probably the best in Quincy. I have been to this salon 4 or 5 times now, and have another appt tonight. Julie fixed my hair after a bad dye job at another salon. The price was great for the amount of work she did. ( I am used to Newbury Street prices). She is kind, listens well, and understood what I wanted my hair to look like. I see Laura for my brows and she is the best. My brows are on the thinner side and she makes them look nice and full. My girlfriend and I came in to get pretty for her birthday and Laura even ran out to the liquor store to grab a bottle of champagne for us. They also let us use the "bridal suite" for the bday appt. The salon is very clean and well-kept. I was so torn to leave my fancy pants Newbury St. salon but now I'm wondering what took me so long. read more

Previous to my wedding day I have always been a happy customer of 1604 Salon for 7 years. I have always seen Danielle and have been extremely happy with what she has done with my hair! So naturally I booked hair and makeup there for my wedding for myself and 8 other people. I was originally quoted one price for hair and makeup for the bridal party when I made this appointment 6 months ago. A few weeks before the wedding I called to confirm the appointments and just happened to ask the prices again. Good thing I did because they had increased significantly. Had I not asked, no one would have informed me of the increase until we all got there on the wedding day. I asked several times if the original prices could be honored that were quoted when we booked the appointments or if since it was a large party could they offer any type of alternative discount. Being in the customer service industry myself I did not see this as an outlandish request, however the poor management at 1604 would not budge on their increased prices. Several of the girls canceled their appointments due to the increased cost and took their business elsewhere. As for the girls that kept their appointments and myself, we all loved the way our hair and makeup came out for the wedding but the way we were treated that day is unacceptable. The makeup artist told one bridesmaid she should look into getting Botox! This is so inappropriate to say to a total stranger, let alone a paying customer. When it came time to pay for the makeup application they were quoted yet another higher price! The owner was there and would not do anything to remediate the situation. The owner was more concerned about getting all of our pictures (without asking our permission) to upload on their website than the way her paying customer were treated. The quality of work that was done was excellent but the lack of customer service and professionalism is the reason I will not be returning to 1604 Salon. read more

I am brand new to the area and rely on yelp for most of my activities around here. I took a chance and made a appointment at this salon and was frustrated because I was told I couldn't get in till 4 then when I asked about Effie they said eleven. I asked about a brow wax, and they said we can't get you in today. I said OK well why don't we set an appt, she says OK how about today at 10:45. Um...... communication problem. I think so. The service at the shop just got worse. I had to sit in the very back because it was so crowded and had some girl wash my hair before Effie even looked at it!!!! So she had no idea what my hair was like before she started cutting. And cut she did. I am trying to grow my hair out and was devastated to see over two inches disappear, I told her repeatedly to JUST TRIM. I won't be going back to Effie, but the brow wax was AWESOME, she was good to talk to and listened to what I said. Any salon where the stylist doesn't look at your hair when it's dry to see the texture and style..... isn't right by me. read more

Nice cut, but I don't like the color and it stresses me out. I hate confrontation and don't want to call but I wanted a balayage with cool blonde shades, that's not what I have...at all. I have a full head of warm/yellow blonde hair. Maybe it's my hair or maybe balayage is a hard tricky technique not many have mastered. But I just wish the she would have mentioned something like.. that is not how it will look, when I showed her a picture of the type of color I wanted. It looked nice when I left the salon (still not what I wanted but I thought "eh, i can live with it" and I wanted to like it) but when I got home and started looking at it (and especially after I washed it) it looks yellow, and the color bled and is blotchy in areas. It wasn't cheap either! Maybe my hair just needs to have foils. I won't be doing balayage again, the painting technique doesn't seem to penetrate my hair fully. read more

I went to Priscilla G. for a haircut. I have curly hair that I wear both straight and curly. I had not gotten my hair cut for four months because I was a) looking for a new stylist and b) am currently growing my hair out to a long length. Priscilla was recommended on a curly hair website. I could not have been more pleased. First, she consulted with me over how I want my hair to look, discussed my preferences and then proceeded with the shampoo and cut. I asked Priscilla to give me a cut that balanced out my face, could wear straight and curly and maximized my length. She did a great job. I felt like she really understood what I was looking for. Plus, her attitude was great. She was professional and sweet. The salon also matched Priscilla's demeanor. I enjoyed myself there and was pleasantly surprised at how great the salon was in the heart of Quincy. I've been to one other hair salon in Quincy and this place beat it in every category. I don't feel good writing this, but then again, I feel that I have to in order to spare someone else the pain that I went through. Literally, pain: I have a chemical burn along the edge of my scalp a result of a botched double process dye attempt, which, by the end of a horrific, five-hour long battle of "fixes" turned in to me having solid black hair and yes, an actually peeling, blistered, raw, red and scabby CHEMICAL BURN. Here are the highlights: I had a very sweet stylist. I liked her. And when I communicated my desires, she said, "OK, let's do this!" And I proceeded to let her do her thing, because she's the stylist and I go to a stylist because I don't know how to dye my hair myself. Stage one, pre-tone? I looked like a black and red caterpillar, with oddly placed strands of light blonde on the underside of my hair. Stage two, post toner? A little better, but really, really blotchy. At this point, I called my boyfriend, because I had that sinking feeling that it was not going to go right at all. Stage three, a secondary toner, and my boyfriend is looking at me like, "What has HAPPENED TO YOU?!" At this point, we had to leave the salon and return because the stylist had another client. Seeing my hair in the light of day was horrific. Upon my return, the stylist (very, sweet, very patient) applied a dark dye to my entire head-- and here's the problem: with each process, the stylist and her assistants were not removing the dye from the edge of my scalp but were SCRUBBING away at it. By the time the final dye went on, I was wincing and even warm water was pretty painful, but I was too shy (and felt too terrible) to speak up further. Finally, I had a uniform hair color. Not what I wanted-- really, really NOT what I wanted, but I paid them what they charged me, $175 (including $35 for a blowdry that I'd specifically said that I didn't want but that the stylist did hastily to "show me the color was uniform"). I just wanted to get out. But the moment I stepped outside, the light of day showed me just HOW dark they had gone: darker than I'd initially come in! I'd spent FIVE HOURS in a salon and over $200 including tip, and I could have cried. (I did, in fact.) I went back in and after speaking with multiple individuals, including 2 salon managers, they charged me only for the root color and refunded my money, which, at the time, I thought reasonable. However, now, a week after the appointment, with blisters, bleeding scabs and obvious trauma to the edge of my scalp, I am making a dermatologist appointment, because this burn isn't healing. And of all the things that could have possibly been my responsibility (perhaps not communicating my desires clearly, although I believe I was VERY clear), a chemical burn to the face is NOT my fault. I have photos, and if I could post them, I would. I felt bad that day, because I'm not a perpetually dissatisfied customer. And I feel bad now, having written this review, because I do not like public criticism. It feels mean to me. But the idea that my face might scar? That if I hadn't spoken up I would have spent over $200 for a bad dye job and a chemical burn? That makes me feel even worse, and if I could spare someone my own experience, it makes me feel a bit better. read more

as someone who has a phobia of salons and haircuts, i always dread getting my hair done. until today i hadn't gotten my hair cut in over a year. I made an appointment at 1604 after reading the Yelp reviews. I have long, super thick hair that was in desperate need of attention. My appointment was with Effie, and she was fabulous. First, she sat me down to see what my hair situation was (a hot mess) and discussed how I wanted it cut. Next, she washed my hair and massaged my scalp (like, legit scalp message - so relaxing!) Finally, she worked some major magic on my hair. I went from Cousin It to amazing - she thinned out my hair with a razor to make it more manageable and added soft, tapered layers. I felt like a million bucks after and will definitely book with Effie again to maintain my new style. read more

I noticed that there aren't many reviews for brazilian waxes on yelp and there's no review on here for Hilary. So I'm writing one now. Hilary is THE best when it comes to brazilian waxes. She's very nice and the atmosphere at this salon is very soothing. She uses the hard wax which is a lot less painful than the regular with the cloth. Also, they give you the disposable underwear here so you're not completely exposed. Hilary makes you feel completely at ease. I've been going to Hilary for brazilian waxes for about 4-5 years now. I live in about half an hour drive away from Quincy but I refuse to go to anywhere else. I did once and it was HORRIBLE (at La Dolce Vita on Boylston Street with Nichole. It was due to this experience that I felt compelled to write a review for Hilary.) Plus, the price is very reasonable. I get mines done for 45 but I think since then the prices have gone up to 50 or 55 because of the economy. I'm not sure because she still charges me 45. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Not 100% sure about Sunday but definitely closed on Mondays. No where else in the Boston area does it better than Hilary. It's best to book appointments when doing Brazilian waxes. Booking a week in advance is best. read more

This is my salon now end of story. And yes, it is in Quincy. It is beautiful inside. The stylists and aestheticians are beautiful. The work they do is beautiful. One: just go get your hair shampooed there. It is like a Jedi wash massage thing. Fantastic. (They don't really do just shampoos I'm just saying:) Two: go get waxed. The brows are natural and the work Hillary does gives you a bright confident look. If you have always been too anxious to get a bikini wax you will leave there knowing you have a place to go for that now, (and wondering why you didn't get a wax sooner!) There is soothing music and a comforting zen ambiance. Again, Hillary is an artist and fast! Three: update your hair style. The stylists here give off a great vibe and have great communication with clients. They are well educated and know what will frame a face and how to work with different hair types. I have curly hair and wanted a more radical asymmetrical style. Michelle created a work of art on my head that I can easily replicate every day in no time! When I had a party to go to she was available to give me the sweetest up-do and a trim at such a reasonable price! I think they really enjoy sculpting a look but if you want a simple trim just tell them and enjoy the chic little soundtrack they always have going on:) while reading a higher end magazine. Great atmosphere. Professional artistic environment. Delicious products! I don't do color yet but I see a lot of natural looking highlights walking out of there and I'm tempted! Along with the other services they provide the cuts and waxing alone are reason enough to become a client. I've been getting my haircut with Michelle for a few years now and every single time I leave so, so happy. The stylists here are very knowledgeable and experienced. I have very short thick hair and it has been every color in the book. Michelle is more than honest when answering my questions and has never steered me wrong. I love how she cuts my hair and I love the spa feeling at 1604- not to mention much more reasonable than the typical 'Newbury Street Salon' which is full of inexperienced newbies just out of beauty school.
