Finally made it to 1836 and I am delighted with the results! The service was phenomenal! The bathroom was cute and the food and drinks were great! And don't forget to try the bananas foster! The hostess recommended upstairs for a lively dinner with friends and told us to try the bacon mac and Gouda!! Btw, it did not disappoint! Creamy texture with cheese and delicious bacon pieces on top! We started with apps--goat cheese balls were very rich, but the balsamic glaze was a nice balance. The fried green tomatoes were just alright--they were a little thick for me, but the flavor was good. The bacon chips and dip was a surprising delight!! You should definitely try it!! Our friends who don't care for bacon even loved it! The cosmo was delicious!! My husband enjoyed his old fashioned, and the Sam Houston Sour is authentically made (IYKYK)! Amazing steak cooked black and blue with their compound butter (garlic, anchovy and paprika) - perfect crust and delicious sauce on an excellent steak. I also had the bacon Mac and Gouda (delicious!) but wait!! Room for desert?? Well if it's their own chocolate layer mousse cake, then heck ya. Words cannot amount to how wonderful this establishment is. The food is warm and hot with unique tastes. The iced tea was my favorite but I must celebrate the steaks and the fish. The butter is creamy and delicious with the breads. Denni Jo (Manager) and Savanah were fantastic showing me around the historic structure. Most beloved were the paintings. A sense of Texas pride and history billows over the entire place as you eat but the feeling is one that elicits joy in being part of the State of Texas. I recommend this place with all of my heart. Loving the vibe at 1836. We came for a bachelorette dinner and sat upstairs in a little attic. It's a little darker up there, but we enjoyed it. Had reservations for 6pm on a Saturday. Were seated immediately and the host was welcoming. We found out from our waiter that happy hour ends at 6:30 (it's from 4:30-6:30, Tues-Sat, so they had (I think) $3 off appetizers, in addition to drink specials. We were able to order wine, our appetizers and food. We got the following: Complimentary bread (5/5), bread was soft and warm, soooo yummy! SUNDRIED TOMATO BRUSCHETTA (5/5) FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (5/5), they gave us ranch, and it was perfectly cooked and not too much batter. For dinner, all of us got the 8oz sirloin. I ordered mine medium rare and it came out perfectly. My friend ordered the same and it was more rare, so we sent it back to sear a bit more and that worked out nicely. We each got different sides thinking we could share, but the sides were definitely not shareable (besides the mac/cheese and brussel sprouts), lol. The only complaint I have is how long it took for us to get our steaks. Apps came out in a timely manner, but the steaks took over an hour to get which was frustrating. Came here to celebrate during our anniversary vacation, and my wife and I loved it! Started with the spinach artichoke app, then for entrees she had the NY strip with the lyonnaise potatoes, and I had the sirloin with the bacon Mac and Gouda. Steaks were cooked perfectly to our liking, and the sides were excellent. Gabe did a fantastic job as our server, always made sure our waters were full and that we were well accommodated despite being very busy. We sat upstairs in the corner, it gave a more private feel despite the restaurant being full. I'm going to start out by saying I really liked that it was a historical house and they kept it pretty authentic in terms of structure. It just added to the charm. All the staff was kind. Our waitress was very very nice, however kinda awkward with service. We didn't order any wine so she should've removed the wine glasses to make room for cocktails before they came, but I had to ask her to take them. Normally this wouldn't bother me, but we were a party of four sat at a VERY small table and we ordered two appetizers as well. This left us scrambling to get the table clear to make room for our cocktails, water glasses, and our appetizers. It interrupted the flow of the experience. We started the evening with the lobster cargot and fried goat cheese. The lobster cargot will be a pass for us next time, it was more oily than buttery. The fried goat cheese we will give another try, they just weren't hot enough and needed a bit more honey on the plate. The salad's were all solid, nothing special but good. Entrees were the ribeye, tenderloin filet, and the Wagyu chopped steak. We chose mashed potatoes, green beans, and the bacon mac n gouda as our accompaniments. We all enjoyed the steaks, cooked perfectly the way we asked for and flavorful. Was it the best quality steak we've ever had, no but most definitely would get it again. The mashed potatoes are nothing special to write about, green beans were cooked perfectly delicious, the bacon mac n gouda was pretty decent. Desert was a grilled deconstructed strawberry shortcake and the crème brûlée. Both were solid choices. Overall it was a very lovely dinner, and we will go back when we are in town. Not really a whole lot of fine dining or upscale restaurant choices in Huntsville, so this is your go to place if that's what you're looking for. We made a reservation for 6:45 pm. We were there at 6:30 pm. We were seated, ordered drinks and food. The drinks cans out. The be appetizers took over an hour to get to us. After appetizers we sat there waiting for our main course. It never came and we had zero communication from Gabe who was helping us. Eventually around 8:30 pm and close to 2 hours since we sat down, I asked him an our our food and he told us it would be another 25-35 minutes. Worst experience with a steakhouse in North America. We had to cancel our order and go to Texas Roadhouse 2 miles away. Horrible customer service, horrible communication, entitlement on not taking time to communicate delays. Why 4 stars? Because I'm happy for Huntsville to have a nice date-night spot like this. --- --- --- I graduated from Sam Houston in 2006 and while I don't remember this, my friend told me that this place was called "The Junction" back in those days. I cannot recall ever visiting The Junction, so I can't compare it to that time, but I definitely think the owners here did a nice job at converting this really old house into a decent steakhouse - something Huntsville definitely did not have to my knowledge before. The interior is great - you certainly feel like you're walking in what may have been someone's home in 1836. The old fashioned cash register at the bar upstairs was a nice a touch. As for the food, I would say it's about what you would expect for Huntsville. You certainly aren't getting the quality you'd get at a high end steakhouse off Westheimer. As a matter of fact, I've probably had a better steak at Longhorn previously. But they seem to be earnestly trying and it can't be an easy market in a college town that's dominated by mostly people who have no interest in dropping $100+ on a dinner for two. I ordered the NY Strip and it was fine. It certainly wasn't bad, but it was heavily salted in some parts to the point where I thought it was pretty weird. Probably every steak I've ever eaten has had salt on it, but this was excessive. However, it was cooked pretty perfectly and I was content. The french onion soup was more of the same. I've had a few better than this, but it was above average. The bacon mac and cheese was very tasty, but a bit heavy/rich. Normally, I'd gobble up every bite but I was only able to eat half of it. My wife was happy to finish the leftovers the next day. I'd probably hand out a 3.5 star rating if that were available, but I will round up due to the aforementioned uphill battle when it comes to demographics of the area. I'll be rooting for this place to overcome that and eventually evolve into a staple of Huntsville. read more

It's also the *only* steakhouse in Huntsville, Texas. I could criticize the home of Sam Houston for its lack of trendy $$$$ prime steakhouses -- all lacquered mahogany, white tablecloths, and molecular gastronomy -- but that would be unfair; Huntsville is a college town peppered with taquerias and dives located within walking distance of SHSU. 1836 could settle with being a small-town Texas steakhouse (the type festooned with spurs, longhorn skulls, and other stereotypical Texas bling), but it wants so desperately to compete with its fancy big brothers in neighboring Houston. The overall experience, however, evokes more comparisons to Longhorn or Saltgrass than to Killen's STQ or Mastro's Steakhouse. The striking exterior -- a repurposed 19th-century Italianate Country Villa homestead -- and the stately (forgive the pun) local Texas artwork promise a world-class experience, but a closer inspection reveals a bit of tackiness. My father and I were seated at a wobbly table, which the hostess corrected by stuffing a napkin under the shortest leg, a makeshift fix I would expect from a greasy spoon, not a place where the "chef's cut" of the evening was a $55 bone-in ribeye. An acrid chemical smell from the nearby cleaning supply closet (door left ajar) permeated the entire dining room. The fresh-baked dinner rolls hit all the right notes (yeasty, buttery, a bit of chew), but the corporate, Sysco-branded butter tabs contradicted our server's assurance of "100% locally sourced ingredients." Our college-aged server was polite and enthusiastic but out of his element. He exuded confidence when reading from a script ("Chef Eric garnishes all steaks with a white truffle-infused sea salt!") but stumbled and stuttered when asked basic questions. "Are the shrimp sourced from the Gulf Coast?" "I...I believe so, yes..." "Are the steaks broiled or grilled?" "Um...I believe they are grilled." "What wood does the chef use?" "Uh...I think I'll have to check on that, sir." I blame not the server but the management; train your staff well to anticipate questions from annoying, nitpicky bastards like me.   The much-hyped 24-ounce, bone-in ribeye (the menu's sole prime offering) was a well-marbled slab of beef with plenty of crispy, charred fatty bits along the edges. Much to my consternation, though, the steak was cooked unevenly, with parts (the cap, in particular) veering close to medium-well as opposed to my specified rare. Our server later clarified that Chef Eric McClanahan fires the steaks on a gas grill, which *should have* ensured even heating. On a positive note, I detected none of the overpowering, manufactured aromatic compounds associated with the promised "white truffle oil-infused" sea salt garnish. If you follow my reviews, then you know I consider onion rings a great litmus test for any restaurant. If the chef can execute a perfect ring -- one with a well-seasoned, shatteringly crisp batter that allows the onions to caramelize -- then the rest of the menu will likely succeed. Alas, the fry cook at 1836 Steakhouse failed my test miserably. The "whiskey" rings that accompanied my steak tasted nothing of fermented grains (Hail Satan for that!), but the thick, spongy batter caused the onions to steam inside their floury sarcophagi, resulting in rings with a mushy, doughy mouthfeel. The standout of the evening came not in the form of grilled animal protein but in a ramekin of homemade blue cheese dressing. It was everything a blue cheese dressing should be: creamy, chunky, and well balanced with a splash of sherry vinegar. Its excellence rescued what was otherwise a boring side salad topped with plastic, pre-shredded Grana Padano and three thick, overwhelmingly pungent slices of red onion. Pro tip: request extra dressing and douse it on everything. I should note that I visited 1836 Steakhouse only once, so take my comments with a grain of white truffle-infused sea salt. Most of the reviews on Yelp are positive, so perhaps I fell victim to inflated expectations. If you find yourself in Huntsville, stick with the mom-and-pop diners or drive 77 miles to Houston for a top-tier steakhouse experience. read more

The waiter took drink orders about 30 min in, returned back an hour and a half later for dinner orders. We went to the bar to get our own drinks in the meantime as we could not find him. He did not come to check on us. Again, we waited for the food order, we did not see him for another hour, we did order some appetizers that were dropped off, the Worst service. I cannot tell you how disappointing this was. Then the worst happened, the food was dropped off.. Dry, overcooked, the worst steak I have had at this place. Yes, we did complain when he came back another hour after dropping the food off. I will be contacting my bank to have the charge refunded. We had brunch about six months ago at 1836 Steakhouse and experienced the worst server ever in my long history as a restaurant patron. This young man failed to take care of his most basic duties, such as clearing dirty plates and refilling water glasses. He regularly reached across one person to put plates in front of the person at the next seat, so that his arm was in the first person's face. When our food finally arrived, we ordered a bottle of wine, and he went off to fetch it. Or so we thought, but we entirely finished our meals before he came back with the bottle in hand. We told him it was too late and asked for the check. He brought the check, which had the cost of the bottle of wine included on it. We pointed that out and he went back and came back with a new check, mumbling that it was a mistake. No apology. I have worked in restaurants myself and observed a great many waiters, but this young man's behavior marks a new low in my experience. He is certainly not upholding the level of professionalism I expect from 1836. I also contacted the management and was promised a gift card to compensate us for the dreadful service, but it never arrived. I allowed for plenty of time before posting this review. read more

Absolute must! I just had one of the best filets I've had in a lonnnnnng time. I travel for work every week and often seek out a good steak. It seems I've been on a bad run for months now. Either cooked wrong or over seasoned with nonsense. If you have a good filet, you don't need all the BS!!! 1836 must understand this. It was a perfect cut of meat, cooked to perfection.
