Great Service and beautiful ambience in a wonderfully renovated building. Food is WAY Way WAY overpriced. My chicken fried steak was tough and the size of an IPhone: $24.00. It did, however, come with a side of mashed potatoes!! Gimme a break!

Words cannot amount to how wonderful this establishment is. The food is warm and hot with unique tastes. The iced tea was my favorite but I must celebrate the steaks and the fish. The butter is creamy and delicious with the breads. Denni Jo (Manager) and Savanah were fantastic showing me around the historic structure. Most beloved were the paintings. A sense of Texas pride and history billows over the entire place as you eat but the feeling is one that elicits joy in being part of the State of Texas. I recommend this place with all of my heart. Travel a bit beyond the northern Houston city limits, take the 11th street exit in Huntsville and make a right into the parking lot. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Fantastic experience!!! Went here for dinner for first time with my best friend to splurge on a delicious meal, and LOVED everything about this restaurant!!! Everything we ate was OUTSTANDING, and loved the speciality cocktails!!! Very friendly and professional staff members too!!! Our server, Gibby, was outstanding!!! LOVED the cozy feel of this restaurant and the soft lighting!!! Great place to eat for any occasion! We cut our filet steak with a butter knife....so tender, juicy, and flavorful!! And the bacon gouda mac n cheese...OMG!!! Appetizers were divine....crab cakes and bacon wrapped scallops, yummy!!! Had a scrumptious pan crusted chicken entree on angel pasta that was incredible!!! Most definitely will be returning!!!

Loving the vibe at 1836. We came for a bachelorette dinner and sat upstairs in a little attic. It's a little darker up there, but we enjoyed it. Had reservations for 6pm on a Saturday. Were seated immediately and the host was welcoming. We found out from our waiter that happy hour ends at 6:30 (it's from 4:30-6:30, Tues-Sat, so they had (I think) $3 off appetizers, in addition to drink specials. We were able to order wine, our appetizers and food. We got the following: Complimentary bread (5/5), bread was soft and warm, soooo yummy! SUNDRIED TOMATO BRUSCHETTA (5/5) FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (5/5), they gave us ranch, and it was perfectly cooked and not too much batter. For dinner, all of us got the 8oz sirloin. I ordered mine medium rare and it came out perfectly. My friend ordered the same and it was more rare, so we sent it back to sear a bit more and that worked out nicely. We each got different sides thinking we could share, but the sides were definitely not shareable (besides the mac/cheese and brussel sprouts), lol. The only complaint I have is how long it took for us to get our steaks. Apps came out in a timely manner, but the steaks took over an hour to get which was frustrating. I understand the kitchen might get backed up, but that made the experience less fun.

What a great dinner. The Republic Sirloin happy hour special for $18 was a great deal and delicious too. Sides were good as well. My only suggestion would be to improve the bacon quality for the wedge and the mac & cheese. It tasted pre-cooked like the stuff I buy at Sam's and not fresh. The grilled strawberry shortcake was delicious too. And our waiter and very friendly and attentive too.

Great experience at 1836 last weekend! Jose was our waiter and he was fabulous. Jose recommended we start with the brisket wontons and they were AMAZING! My husband and I split the wedge and ribeye- it was cooked perfectly. Also had a side of asparagus. For desert we had the bananas foster- perfect ending! Thank you 1836, we will be back!

I'm going to start out by saying I really liked that it was a historical house and they kept it pretty authentic in terms of structure. It just added to the charm. All the staff was kind. Our waitress was very very nice, however kinda awkward with service. We didn't order any wine so she should've removed the wine glasses to make room for cocktails before they came, but I had to ask her to take them. Normally this wouldn't bother me, but we were a party of four sat at a VERY small table and we ordered two appetizers as well. This left us scrambling to get the table clear to make room for our cocktails, water glasses, and our appetizers. It interrupted the flow of the experience. We started the evening with the lobster cargot and fried goat cheese. The lobster cargot will be a pass for us next time, it was more oily than buttery. The fried goat cheese we will give another try, they just weren't hot enough and needed a bit more honey on the plate. The salad's were all solid, nothing special but good. Entrees were the ribeye, tenderloin filet, and the Wagyu chopped steak. We chose mashed potatoes, green beans, and the bacon mac n gouda as our accompaniments. We all enjoyed the steaks, cooked perfectly the way we asked for and flavorful. Was it the best quality steak we've ever had, no but most definitely would get it again. The mashed potatoes are nothing special to write about, green beans were cooked perfectly delicious, the bacon mac n gouda was pretty decent. Desert was a grilled deconstructed strawberry shortcake and the crème brûlée. Both were solid choices. Overall it was a very lovely dinner, and we will go back when we are in town. Not really a whole lot of fine dining or upscale restaurant choices in Huntsville, so this is your go to place if that's what you're looking for. Is it trying to be upscale, yes, are they succeeding at it? I think it falls a little short but that's just one person's opinion, give it a try and decide for yourself.

Stopped in on a road trip and absolutely LOVED this place. Faith was our server and they were competent, quick, and very nice. (Super cute makeup too) The steak was one of the best I've had in a restaurant and that risotto..../... WOW. They make a different risotto possibly daily and I would love to try more if I lived in the area. Def worth a stop!

They warm up the table with this amazing cornbread & hot rolls Today I had the fried catfish with fries and coleslaw. It was deliciously light & flaky but so filling I only ate 1 filet. The coleslaw was the best I've ever had! Ever! And I don't normally eat/like hush puppies but I always try and thumbs up; different from what I've tried in years past. My husband had the chicken fried steak with okra & mashed potatoes which I got a 'it was good' response which really means... he ate all of it with no complaints. Lol very rare to get a 'fantastic' or 'delicious' outta him. There are no booths, which is my preferred dining experience but we're not here for the comfort! The table was a little wobbly but I didn't care, I love staring at the pie shelf while dining! Nicely country style decorum. Great food delivered quickly with a smile! prices are inline with the quality/quantity! Thank you! Happy New Year!

My husband ordered a rib-eye cooked medium rare with baked potato and salad. I ordered the fried seafood platter with shrimp, catfish, and stuffed crab. My husband is a steak connoisseur and he said it was the best steak he's had in Huntsville. It was cooked exactly as ordered, perfectly seasoned with just S&P, and had the right amount of grill flavor with just enough "bloody" juice to run his grilled Texas toast through it to sop up all the flavor on the plate. Potato was the run-of-the-mill baked potato. Salad was just iceberg lettuce with tomato and a nice creamy ranch. My platter was all fried seafood with jumbo shrimp coated in a seasoned Louisiana-type batter, fish was clean tasting, crab was of the frozen variety. Fries were a little old but the okra was really nice and crispy. Service was superb. She greeted us when we walked in and made sure we never had a need. Other customers were friendly and even discussed other dishes they prepare that are just as tasty. Will definitely return.

When you're seated, they bring two homemade rolls and butter to enjoy while waiting for your order. You choose your entree and then all sides are the same...(1) loaded mashed potatoes with sour cream, cheese, and bacon bits, (2) green beans with bacon, and (3) house salad with cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and croutons. Hubby ordered his favorite steak, a ribeye cooked medium rare. He said his steak was cooked perfectly, exactly medium rare with nice char marks. He did add a small amount of salt. Loaded potatoes were fresh made and creamy with a few small potato chunks, indicative of fresh potatoes and not instant. Green beans were so tasty with nice big pieces of bacon and perfectly smoky flavor. The salad was served with a creamy HOMEMADE ranch...No Hidden Valley here and they leave the bottle so add as little or as much as you want. I ordered ribs...they come naked to your table with the sauce on the side. Don't let the mediocre presentation of the ribs fool ya! They were so flavorful and fall-off-the-bone tender. I didn't need any utensils at all, as tender as these ribs were. We ordered a slice of strawberry cake and chocolate cake to go. Will update review after trying those two. Service was impeccable and she was very friendly with attention all throughout the meal. Very clean restaurant. There was a back room that we couldn't see how many tables there were, but in the room we sat in, there was an array of seating options for a little less than 30 people. Picture: small, quaint dining experience. I would say the only downside to this experience was a slamming sound we kept hearing every few seconds. Thought at first it was a refrigerator or walk-in door being slammed but not so sure as it happened almost constantly. Facebook page states they have to go orders on Mondays. We will definitely return!

It's housed in an unassuming little house nestled in the woods on the side of the road. When you pull in and park, you almost feel like you are going to a friend's house for dinner instead of going out to a restaurant. My wife and I love a good steak, so we had to check this place out when it started making waves here locally. We ordered the ribeye steak dinner, but they offer some excellent alternatives if you are not in the mood for a steak. The steaks were cooked perfectly, well-seasoned, and slathered in butter. So good you almost want to lick the plate. I had the green beans and they were cooked home-style with bacon. The rolls are perfect and served with lots of real butter. The baked potatoes are cooked so that when you open them up the insides are steamy and flaky. The toppings are real sour cream, bacon, cheese, and whatever your heart desires. The service is wonderful. We were completely at ease as the servers felt more like our cousins than restaurant employees. They really treat you like family and make you feel welcome. They get the message across to you that they want you to come back. They spoiled us. So if you've had a hard week, you deserve a good meal from people who are happy to see you. Check out the good folks at Southwood. You'll be glad you did! P.S. The desserts are great too. The portions are so big we had to take ours home and had bread pudding with our coffee the next morning. Talk about a great way to start a Saturday!
