We debated on where to eat in Tyler and chose the 1836. The decor is really interesting and unique. The bathrooms are worth a look see. Functional use of space and seems to work well, but it is different. The food was excellent! I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly - tender and moist. The grits were awesome with so much flavor! The service was good but I did feel she needed to study up on the menu more and be more confident in her responses. I got through burger (go figure lol) without pimento cheese (eww) and it was ok, I can't remember it. My husband got through Chile Colorado. He said it was really good. The atmosphere was nice, loved the decorations. Our realtor got BBQ shrimp, but looked nothing like BBQ shrimp lol, I forgot what her husband got. Must admit I was a little skeptical because I love Villa Montez so much, however, 1836 definitely measures up! Our table had the Chile Verde braised pork, the cast iron enchiladas and the chicken rolls. We loved everything. If it's your first time get the enchiladas. Life changing. I travel for work and spent some time in Tyler the past few weeks...my visits to town included 2 fantastic dinners at 1836 Texas Kitchen. Each visit I tried something new and the highlights included: perfectly cheesy crawfish queso, delicious fried green tomatoes, spicy chicken tortilla soup, grilled salmon with amazing grits, and whiskey bundt cake. Service was great, and they have a diverse beer selection. This place is a gem hidden in a newer shopping center. Give it a try...I'm sure, like me, you'll come back. read more

We were scheduled to have a wedding rehearsal dinner at another restaurant and were notified at 10 am that morning that they could not serve us that night. We called 1836 Texas Kitchen and they stepped up and accommodated our party of 24 and were able to seat us down stairs as a group as we had several in our party with mobility issues . The four entree choices they offered were well received by the group and the dessert choices were a big hit. Everyone commented on the service staff being very attentive and everyone enjoyed their meal. The next time we are in Tyler we definitely will return. read more

This was my first time here, and came based on recommendations. I'll chalk this evening up to a bad night, but I'm not sure I'll return. The building itself was clean, but definitely didn't match the name of the restaurant. It had this metal industrial feel to it, and definitely not a Texas. It did, however, have a framed 1824 flag as you walked into the restrooms. We were quickly greeted and asked for an 8 top. The hostess went to move tables together, but I noticed an upstairs with a larger table. Before the tables were moved I asked if we could be put upstairs. We were told no because they didn't have enough servers to work upstairs. Mind you, this was a Saturday night around 6:45. That being said, the hostess was nice about it. We sat at the table for quite a while before we were greeted. At least 2 other servers walked by us and never said a word. Our server could have been tied up, and I understand that, but his co-workers should have helped him. The server was nice, but service was slow. Part of the problem was that the bar was slow to move drinks. The restaurant was not that busy, so I'm not sure why drinks were taking so long. I started with the gin fizz, and it was pretty good. Honestly, it was the best thing I had there. The appetizers were good. We had the fried green tomatoes, and the rest of the table had chips and green chili queso, chicken rolls, and nachos. All were good. The problem was that different servers delivered them, and had to ask the table who had what. That was annoying. It was a while before we were able to order our food. This would have been ok had drinks not taken so long to be delivered. But, we finally did, and I ordered the bbq shrimp. Fast forward to the food being delivered, and the servers delivering didn't know where the food went. Once again we got the "who had this?" questions as they tried to drop off 8 plates. At this point I let the server know that it was very frustrating for them not to know where the food goes. For this kind of money we spent, they need to know who had what. I did make sure to tell the young lady who delivered it that I wasn't irritated at her, but at the situation. On to the food. Maybe I have another definition of bbq, or I completely misread the menu, but this came out nothing like I expected. Another guest ordered the same thing and had the same opinion. The shrimp were ok, but definitely was not bbq shrimp. They were served in a bowl in a liquid that didn't have much flavor to it. The rice and beans that were in the plate were served at room temp. At some point my date got up and went to the bar to order a drink and said something to the server about the food coming out cold. He came over and asked to replace it. At this point I didn't want to wait any longer and politely said not to worry about it. The shrimp were hot, though. My date had the catch of the day, which salmon and crab sauce. That was pretty good, and wish I had ordered that instead. The lady across from me ordered the pork nachos with no greens. It came out loaded with greens. She just picked through the plate and removed them. The server noticed it several minutes later, but he wasn't the one who delivered the food. Another guest at our table ordered the cast-iron enchiladas. They looked pretty amazing, but they were so hot she couldn't eat them. I know it sounds ironic that I just mentioned that my food was too cold, but she said it was inedible due to the heat. It wasn't until the rest of us were finished before she could eat it. She just scooped it out on the plate and let it cool off that way. We wanted to get more drinks, but didn't want to wait too long for them. So we decided to head to another restaurant to enjoy the rest of the night. One final observation was the restroom. It was co-ed, if you will, and definitely not a place I would let my daughter go to by herself. I'm a grown man, and it was a bit uncomfortable for me. I don't know what was going on with operations tonight, but this place was not on their A-game. I hope that they get their act together and stay successful, but for the amount of money we spent, I expect a certain level of quality and service. For those reasons I doubt I'll return. read more

I tried out 1836 during their "soft" opening about 10 days after they opened the doors. The menu is unique and many items grabbed my attention to want to try out. The boss lady ordered a chicken quesadilla. It was pretty much a tortilla with cream of chicken soup slapped in the middle. Not good. I ordered the ham/bean sammich. It was just "OK." The menu descriptions had my hopes up for more. The bar has ample seating for at least 15 patrons, and the glass overhead doors to the patio are a really nice touch. Zero TV's at the bar. I tried out their version of a rita rocks. Bad idea as it was horrible drink. I'll come back and give this place another try. I like Villa and know the owners will hopefully work out the bugs. read more

We had. Large group (more than were expected) and had a private room. One waiter served the entire group (named Sacramento). He did an excellent job considering the number in our group (18). The food was very good and served in a timely manner. My main concern was that there was absolutely no sound absorbing material in the room and it became almost impossible to have a conversation with those around us. Me and one of my friends serve at a restaurant so we know what to do and such. Anyway she did a very good job she understood us clearly and knew when to check up and such 10/10. The food was also very delicious and filling and exceeded my expectations by a lot 10/10 I don't know if they put reviews in the kitchen like they do at my work but you did a very good job everyone. The crawfish gumbo was amazing but order the bowl not the cup. Cup was not enough. They do have areas for receptions but reserve early and have someone verify your area the day of. I'm super surprised- happily surprised, to find this new restaurant in Tyler. Ambiance is very hip and modern. Service was great and the wait staff clearly love their jobs. Food was fabulous. We started with the green chili queso- which was perfect. I had the shrimp and grits (delicious) and my husband had the Wahoo which was the fish for the night. His was so tender and flakey with the perfect sauce covering it. I stole several bites. Overall a great experience. I'm anxious to return to try more of the menu! read more

Found this restaurant on Yelp since we are new to the area. We were so pleased, it was so clean and the staff were so friendly. The food was so good, I had skillet enchiladas with green chiles, it was great! The black beans and rice was very tasty. My husband had the chicken fried with mashed potatoes and greens. AMAZING from the hostess that greeted us at the door (no wait time and was seated immediately) to our nightcap from the bar. Maricela was our server and along with being quite attentive to our table was just as personable and pleasant as could be. We thoroughly enjoyed the scrumptious appetizer of fried green tomatoes that came to the table with little wait time. My fiancé ordered the Cast Iron Enchiladas and went on and on about how good they were and NEVER offered a taste! I had the Country Fried Steak. I threw caution to the wind and ordered the steak covered in the green chili "gravy". WHOA! Loved it! But...what was the most delightful was the seasoned collard greens. The portions were for us the perfect size being just the right amount to make us full and content. After the meal our nightcaps consisted of the 1836 Mule and the Old Fashioned Whiskey. Perfection! I have not been to 1836 in a while, I decided to go try it out again, I went on a Monday evening. I sat at the bar, I'm impressed at the promptness of the bartender and the Courtesy I was treated with on that evening! Completely changed my mind from the last time I was there. So I decided to go in for dinner once again, this time on a Thursday. I guess I chose the worse night to visit again. The kid behind the bar is clueless of what it takes to be in this industry. He was not attentive at all, several instances he would disappear, I looked into kitchen, there he was eating and having a jovial time with the servers and here I am needing a refill on my drink. To make matters worse, he is still chewing, as he walks into the bar fixing his hair and not washing his hands and THEN comes and asks me if I wanted something more to drink. I said. No thank you I will take my check. Disgusted. Annoyed. Disappointed. Thursdays is a no go for me. I will only come back on Monday evenings if I decide to visit again. read more
