Overall our experience was great. The clam chowder was awesome. The ahi tuna crunch was wonderful and the Thai chicken pasta was good. All of those items I would definitely order again. The pasta seemed to take longer to come out than I would have guessed but no big deal. The watermelon smash drink though. I was not a fan at all. I'd been wanting to visit 1855 Saloon and Grill for months after passing by it and finding a Sunday chicken pot pie special listed on the online menu. As someone who makes a great pot pie at home, I was excited to try a version here. Unfortunately, the pot pie was a letdown. It looked nice upon presentation but lacked substance. The filling was airy rather than creamy, and there was very little chicken or vegetables -- certainly not what I'd expect from a comfort dish like this. Creamy, savory, warming - all missing. Let me start with one positive note....service was fabulous. Our waitperson was friendly and attentive. But everything else was subpar. I'm guessing new ownership making bad choices. This is probably our fifth time dining here so we can see the differences. Wine prices up with smaller pour. Our "artisan" bread was sliced commercially made rolls. We had an event to go to in Cottage Grove and drive past 1855 so much, we decided we needed to try it! You would NEVER guess how gorgeous it is inside, just by looking at the building. You follow the boardwalk to get seated by the hostess. They have the cutesy butcher paper table topper, and a simple and sweet menu. The price point is very average for a nicer establishment, but if you were expecting bar pricing, you may have a little sticker shock. But there are cheaper options as well. My husband lives for Buffalo chicken wraps. He said the sauces seemed a little off, but it could've just been that they were made in house and not what he's used to. My pesto flatbread was DELICIOUS. I even asked for an extra side of pesto aioli. Instead of a side, I opted for a side salad. It was so-so but they really played it up with shaved Parmesan. They did have some pretty brood cheese curds too! Lots of great options, it was hard to make a choice. I'm sure we will be back, since we are always passing by. read more

We met our brothers and sister-in-laws for dinner on Thursday. Loved sitting in the screened-in porch. Drinks and dinner and lots of time to catch up on family news. Everyone had different meals and everyone loved the food. The scallops were fabulous. The chicken parmesan was so big, my husband couldn't finish it. The food was pretty good, but not great. It was glorified bar food being served at upscale prices. If the prices had been a little more fair, I probably would have given this place four stars instead of three. When the bill came out, for three people, it was over $100. Two fish fries, an order of slightly dry pasta, and cheese curds and two beers--it was $100. $120 with a decent tip. I don't know of any fish fry in the area that's worth $100. I'd go back to this joint, but not with any sort of haste. Likely, given better options out there, I may never return. read more

We had a pretty good experience our first time visiting. The service was great throughout the whole meal. We ordered calamari as an appetizer. It was a little above average! Then we ordered the 1855 steak to split. It was very good! The broccoli could've been steamed a little bit more but other than that the meal was satisfying and fulfilling. We also ordered chocolate cake to go and it was boxed so nicely with extra fresh fruit and whipped cream. The taste was phenomenal! Will definitely be back to try more. I wouldn't recommend getting the barque sauce unless you like dark lagers, was quite a surprise when I dipped a fry in it. Dinner with the family on the spacious, screened-in patio this week left a little to be desired. If you are looking for an after work spot for appetizers and beer, it's great! The cheese curds were very good and they have a decent but by no means expansive beer list with something for everyone. Very friendly server though she took her mask down to talk to the table. Dinner was disappointing. My build-your-own wood fired pizza felt like little more than a higher quality frozen pizza. The $4 fresh Buffalo mozzarella topping was nowhere to be found and the arugula had a wilted appearance and had either sat on the warm pizza for too long or had just seen better days. I noticed that my dad's mahi mahi tacos had one piece of perfectly shaped rectangular fish in each but he thought they were pretty good as far as flavor goes. My in-laws both felt their walleye wasn't cooked very well and lacked tenderness. I'd probably go again and try something different if in the area, but it wouldn't make my list of places I'd assume I'll get a good meal at. read more

I was impressed with the sweet potato fries, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The Avocado on the BLT was fresh and just ripe. I was told the black bean burger tasted great too! I appreciate 1855 sources out local beef for their burgers. Give 1855 a try and I think you'll be pleased. Right now, they will take a debit card over the phone or exact cash at pick up. When I mistakenly thought Toby's was open on Sundays...they're not, we looked for a different restaurant. I was craving steak, salad, and wine. My guy was craving food. The second we walked in, the new bartender Dustin was so warm and welcoming. We love sitting at the bar and we knew it would be a good experience as soon as we sat down. We ordered a lot of food as it was 2:30 PM and we hadn't eaten yet. We got the Brussel sprouts to start, brie and pear pizza, and the 1855 steak with cream sauce, and a side salad with what tasted like made in-house blue cheese dressing. The sprouts were out of this world, wood burning cooked pizza was perfection, and the steak was a perfect medium rare. Although the kitchen forgot the cream sauce, they quickly remedied it and it came out in minutes and was delicious. The place is huge with big windows and a candle (all lit) on each table. We were pretty impressed with the ambiance. They have an outdoor area as well we will try next time. read more

I used to come here quite frequently with my in-laws as they live nearby and was always very satisfied with the food. My primary delight in the food/menu here is that goat cheese seems to be a common ingredient across the menu, and goat cheese is my first true love! I get the garden/veggie pizza very frequently and aside from being a bit heavy on the mozzarella cheese, it's amazing. They have a good variety of beers on tap and I can always find a dark beer to my liking (often a challenge in summer months!). Staff was always nice and helpful as well. I recently came back here with a group, and the food was still pretty good. We did have a large group, but we had called ahead to give them a heads up - service was still slow and a bit discombobulated especially considering they weren't that busy. It was a gorgeous summer night and their patio looks out over the Glacial Drumlin - it's great! However, during dinner business hours, staff told us that the patio was closed and we were kicked out of it because they were moving furniture in preparation for a carpeting job inside. That was a bit disappointing and seems like it could have been better timed so that they didn't close down the patio for dinner on Thursday. Oh well. I ordered the black bean burger which was great. The patty is definitely not made in-house and seemed like an average veggie patty you could get from the grocery store frozen section. It had black beans in it, but I'm not entirely sure that was the main ingredient. Still, although generic, it isn't bad. What really made the burger was the guacamole and goat cheese combo that was on top of the burger. What a genius combination! It made the burger absolutely fantastic. I almost always order fries with my veggie burgers after a long bike ride, but the restaurant recommended the garlic green beans as a side with the black bean burger. I tried it, and thought they were pretty good! I would order them again. The green beans themselves were cooked well but a bit soft. Still, the ingredients and preparation around them really livened them up (kinda like my burger). Definitely a fan of the way 1855 has put the menu together and even on dishes that might seem average in terms of prep/cooking, the added elements of each dish really increase the quality. Another nice thing about 1855 is that it is wheelchair accessible - just park in the back parking lot near the trail. There is not a ton of other options in the immediate area, and 1855 is definitely among the top. I would recommend checking it out! Live music isn't really my thing as I don't like to yell to people sitting next to me, but there is often live music if that's your thing. read more

We've lived in CG for about 18 years and have been going to 1855 since it opened. It's gone through various management over the years and has definitely had its ups and downs. Right now is the biggest down we have experienced. I ordered something that I've had a number of times before and it has totally changed. Their buns were awful, the chicken was dry, the fries were mushy and over salted. Onion straws were disgustingly greasy. Server was absolutely terrible-never filled my water, didn't ask if we needed a box, didn't respond to anything we said. Long time customers that will probably never return unless we hear things have drastically changed. Highly recommend to save your money and stomach and head elsewhere. read more

Tried this place based on a recommendation from friend. I wasn't sure what to expect since the reviews from other Yelper's was limited and not favorable. The place was busy and packed with customers...so it has to be good. There was a musician playing live music, which added a nice touch. The facility is designed and made to feel like an old rustic building turned into a restaurant. You do get that feel in 1855. Adult drinks are mixed well !! I ordered the "1855 Steak w/cheese and garlic fries" and wife ordered "Filet mignon w/mash potatoes". Both meals came with salad. Both meals were cooked to order and tender. Prices were a little on the high side "for me", but you get what you pay for....outstanding service and an excellent meal. We didn't really know what to expect upon waking into 1855 Saloon and Grill. The name doesn't really fit the restaurant; instead of a bar feel, 1855 definitely has more of a classy restaurant feel, which we thought was a good thing. We sat at the bar because no seating was available on this Friday night due to the fish fry being served. As soon as we bellied up, the bar tender asked for our drink order. They have a local draft list, wines and cocktails, all decently priced. We shared a cheese curd appetizer and both had the fish fry special, which was Panko crusted bluegill with red potatoes and either a salad or soup ($15). The cheese curds were cheesy, but the menu says the curds are lightly breaded, which is false. The breading was overly fried. Sort of a trend, I guess because the panko crust on the bluegill was a little too hard and thick for my liking, but I'm not a huge breaded fish fan. The potatoes were delicious and the salad was a nice mix of greens and fresh vegetables. This is a nice option when in Cottage Grove, but I won't necessarily go out of my way to eat here again. read more
