Passing though Chattanooga and researched a good burger place, this location was highly rated. My summary is far from well ranked. The location is across the street of the incline railroad. While the nighttime crowd did not feel like tourists, the inside restaurant feel was stark, cool and uninviting. The outside dining would have been nice, but too long a wait. The server was pleasant and offered many recommendations. The food, however, was marginally acceptable. The burger did have a good flavor, would not hit a top burger list (though listed as such) in any other town visited. The shrimp and grits may have from a can. Lots of cornstarch binder in a light, tasteless gravy. Shrimp were well prepared, precooked I imagine, but tails left on. Why leave tails on in a messy gravy for diners to wrestle with? The cold slaw was also tasteless. Don't need to repeat a visit. read more

We are in town with friends for a three day vacation. We are at 1885 tonight and the food was absolutely amazing. We began with the pimento cheese dip and okra. It was amazing. The dip was so good and the okra was cooked just right. My friend and I has the shrimp and etoufee and it was the best I have ever had. Our husbands has hamburgers and loves them. The best part of our evening was our server Brianna. She made our whole night. She gave us great recommendations. She was always checking on us and her personality was fantastic. She spoke so highly of the owners and the other restaurants they have. We just loved her. Amazing meal and amazing service read more

A desired patio location most days of the year! 1885 is a fantastic spot to go for drinks, brunch, lunch or.. anytime! They do all meals well and it's always busy. I recommend the hummus and pita (best pita ever), the 1885 burger (surprisingly fresh pickles) and their garlic parm fries! The other menu items are southern and seem to have some Cajun influences. The drinks are creative and decently priced. Overall, all menu items seem to be a few dollars more than similar restaurants in town, but again, they're always busy so it's not a deterrent for most guests. We were passing through and someone recommended this place. I had the 1885 burger and my sister had the steak frites. I was cheating on my diet, but this was honestly one of the best burgers I've ever eaten! Messy, but absolutely delicious and worth me not losing weight this week! I subbed the rosemary fries and they were also delicious and worth the up charge. Unfortunately, my sister didn't really like her steak. It was undercooked, so she asked them to cook it a little longer, which they did, with a smile. She said they must have marinated it in some kind of red wine sauce and that's all she could taste. Anyway, she had serious food envy, and I was a happy camper! I wish this place was closer to me, but if I'm ever in Chattanooga again, I'll be getting the burger. Our dinner was delicious & our server was very polite and promt. We decided to do call-ahead seating about 30 minutes before we arrived, which was a wise choice since it was a busy Saturday evening. There was a long waiting list, so we did still have to wait another 15 minutes once we got there, but didn't mind. We dined on the patio, which was shaded by beautiful trees. It was very comfortable & pleasant. We ordered the Hushpuppies with Honey butter for our app, which we all enjoyed. My husband and I ordered different steak dishes, and our son got the kids cheeseburger. All were seasoned well & grilled to perfection. To drink I enjoyed the Blueberry Mojito, which was very tasty. And the Blackberry Sangria, which was a little too sweet for my liking. But overall a great experience, and would definitely recommend. read more

This was the best meal I had during my short trip to Chattanooga. The service is very warm and friendly. The biscuits and gravy were amazing! I only had a bite but I did regret not getting my own. This place deserves a sixth star! If you want wonderful food, a unique experience and you admire innovation, 1885 is a must-eat-at destination. Definitely at the top of my favorite restaurants list and I have eaten at great places all over. The staff was extremely busy but made sure they were attentive, friendly and professional. The bbq chicken with Carolina Gold bbq sauce was literally finger-licking good; I'm not dark meat fan but it was charred perfectly and I think you could put the sauce on a shoe and it would be delicious. The macncheese was great--usually I am not impressed with restaurant macncheese, but 1885's was sharp, baked perfectly and delicious. The greens were also some of the best I've eaten and I am extremely tough on collards. They were cooked perfectly with a bit of tang and a great meaty broth. I wish this restaurant was in Memphis so I could enjoy it at my leisure; however, I will definitely return and I vow to enthusiastically spread the word on this fantastic restaurant. read more

Great southern food. Nice but casual. Brought the dog and the kids and sat outside. Great burger, Cuban sandwich, fried okra. Kids menu. Chuck says Mac n cheese was not his favorite. It looks nothing like the kraft Mac n cheese dad cooks when mom is out at "book" club. Proximity to Rock City entrance does mean a little tourist traffic if you eat outside. Biker blasting soft jazz from his Harley as he cruises by and revs his throttle does not pair well with pimento cheese. And soft jazz really? Now the dog's barking and the grumpy old man at the next table is staring at us like we ruined his whole day. "Godd#mit Martha, you cant eat anywhere in peace these days". Good service. Great food. Ooh, ooh, ooh! Now I know there is some great fine(er) dining in Chattanooga, beyond Alleia. No, Hennan's doesn't count because, well, y'all who consider it a fine steak house haven't been to a real one. Anyhoo, three numbers: 1885, 1976, 2015. The restaurant name, the year my co-diner and I were born, and the time we enjoyed a lovely repast. Three good numbers. Somehow relevant here. He wanted good food; I'd bookmarked the place so I jumped at his suggestion - and I recommend any of you who've not been should go as well. Highlights: Interesting (in a good) way semi-upscale décor. Somehow, the craft paper over the tables doesn't seem kitschy. Nice feel over all. Our server, Abby, was great - attentive, friendly, and dealing with us as diners just after 9p when they close at 10p (bar open til 11p) when I imagine she was ready to close already - enough! Never got that vibe which says a lot to folks like us who work in restaurants, too. The food was great. The scallop app was absolutely delicious - two scallops so, really, each of us could have gotten our own - delicious orange liquor. Love, and would definitely get again. My friend got the etouffe, which he'd had before, and enjoyed - note that this dish has a good bit of kick so keep that in mind if you have a milder palate. I got the steak frites, something I love to order when it's on a menu, and it was a great choice - very generous, perfectly (at med rare, just under) cooked skirt steak. The fries rock- thin, crispy, just enough rosemary. Yeah, I let him have a few. This is a great place to go for a date, a good place for a group (and Abby was nice and observant enough to let us know a party of 12 was about to order, and asked if we could decide so ours would be ahead of theirs - the kind of thing that can make a HUGE difference in how long it takes your food to arrive) and a perfect place to take parents or other visiting relatives. We had a bit of a wait. We were seated outside and by this time it was pretty chilly. My youngest was cold. Our waitress Sierra moved us inside. The dinner was ssved! Empanadas we're fine. After a rainy and foggy day that blocked the scenic view at the top of the incline railway, we returned looking for something to cheer us up, I did some research and figured that 1885 would be the best choice. Words do no justice to how right I was!! This restaurant was perfect! We were a group of 11 people and we all ordered something different. For starters I had the homemade hummus and something as simple as that was done extremely well and tasted great! We ordered beer and I was very pleased with the selection. I had the Hazy IPA and was very happy/surprised they had it on tap! My entree was the roasted chicken and it was perfectly done, cooked to perfection and very juicy. The rosemary fries were so great as well as the mashed potatoes! My wife had the trout and enjoyed every bite, others I. Our group ordered the pork chop and loved it as well! I also was able to try the wings and they were outstanding!! We were seriously contemplating returning in the evening to get more wings and beer!! The kids food was excellent as well and the Mac and cheese was a hit!! Lastly the ambiance and decor made a great impression and welcoming feel! I loved everything about this place! Although I'm a Chattanooga local, I had never been to this St. Elmo gem. I've heard good things--not great--and was pleasantly surprised. Although crowded at around 8 on a Saturday night, we were seated after a 20 minute wait. The first thing we ordered was the wing appetizer; they were award winners, and sure tasted like it. The sauce was sweet with a hint of spice. The main course I ordered was the grilled chicken sandwich. Although tasty, it was a bit bland. The meal itself was warm and satisfying, though. The grilled corn side was also lacking in flavor. The flavor of the shrimp and crawfish meal was incredible, though. Warm, savory, and satisfying. Although I'm not a huge seafood person, everything tasted great. The Mac and cheese side was incredible as well; it was old-fashioned and creamier than most. The atmosphere in this restaurant was upbeat and fun, and the dress ranged from casual to nice-casual. Service was friendly as well. The only thing I would change about this experience was it ended up being a bit expensive, but besides that, it was a wonderful dinner. read more

This place makes me want to live in Chattanooga. Everything we had was delicious & we were stuffed by the time we left. Maybe living there would actually be a terrible idea... We started with the empanadas & fried green tomatoes. Both were flavorful & well prepared. At our servers recommendation I had the fried chicken (which I never have) and swapped the mashed potatoes for the roasted corn. This was my first time having creole gravy because I am not a gravy person at all. I had it on the side & ended up dumping all of it in my chicken, it was delicious & not at all what I had expected. So flavorful & not at all earthy or spicy. We also shared an order of hush puppies & loved them! The sauce that came with them was tasty but, I alternated with that & some cocktail sauce that came with my husband's meal. My husband had the fried shrimp and really enjoyed it. I was so busy enjoying mine that apparently I made no mental notes about his. It did look delicious! Our server was excellent 90% of the time. Near the end of our visit he disappeared for a while and we had to wait quite a bit for our check. At that point service on the patio appeared to be quite busy so, he probably had his hands full. read more

Are you looking for a nice warm place on a cold night to have a good drink and great food? Would you like bartenders that are fast, Efficient, friendly, and have a great sense of humor? We wandered in here looking for food after visiting the Mad Knight brewery. Despite it being a busy Friday night, we were seated immediately at the bar, which was our preference. Within 60 seconds a friendly bartender was pouring this water and offering us menus. What service! We had the fritters or hush puppies, whatever they were called, and they were absolutely delightful. Serve hot, soft and pretty on the inside and crunchy on the outside with a delicious sauce. We also had the spinach salad and enjoyed the sweet tea vinaigrette. We requested chicken on the spinach salad and they gave us a very large portion of chicken breast. Awesome! My absolute favorite dish was the crab cake appetizer. It had more real crab then many seafood restaurants serve in their "crabcakes." The tartar sauce was not pungent, but instead a little sweet and creamy. I would go back any day of the week to have their pocketbook friendly, hot and tasty food. The bartenders kept everything clean and came back repeatedly to ensure we have everything we need. OMGOSH!! This restaurant is a must stop! Our party of 8 all tried different meals and appetizers and every single thing was over the top delicious. My personal favorites was the gumbo, the chicken fried steak and the fried grits. The wings and BBQ chicken were also big hits. Our server Bergen (sorry if I misspelled) was on top of everything. We never had to ask for a soda/sweet tea refill, and she brought us a mashed potato sample prior to ordering because we are a picky bunch. 10/10 would recommend!! read more

We had lunch at 1885 grill and I can say the place is fully packed. You have to make sure you make around 30-60 mins wait time during weekends. Which means this is a legit food place. They have inside and outside sitting. The downside of this is the long wait for the food to be served. The wait though is worth it. The food is great and they have a ton of waiters and waitresses to service you. They are strict with the masking policy for COVID-19 so make sure you get those masks on. I recommened the seared scallops for appetizer, and they offer a good variety of entree's. read more
