This place has so much potential. They clearly have someone who knows how to make authentic pastries and their coffee is a real step up. That said, the lovely croissants (and the bread as far as I can tell) are always burned. Not dark brown but actually burned. With black areas. The flavor of the croissants is gorgeously buttery but only if you first knock off the burned parts. Otherwise it's like sucking on a flaky, buttery charcoal briquet. The second major strike against them is the volume at which they play their music. On the occasions I've been in, I've seen people at the tables, apparently socializing, but I don't know how. I can barely understand the very friendly staff or make myself heard to order. I can't imagine staying there to enjoy coffee with friends when I wouldn't be able to hear them. read more

I have visited the this local bakery several times and have only been able to purchase bread 1/5 of those times because this place is a bakery and yet sometimes makes great delicious bread. I am so glad to see this bakery in the neighborhood where it is. Definitely enhances the urban experience of eastern Lawrence. I want to talk about the bread. I love that they use locally grown wheat (it's Kansas, duh! How long did it take us to figure out how to use what is growing in our back yards?) and mill a lot of it themselves. The bread is flavorful and has that extra yum. But. The bread is not properly baked. We have gotten bread 3-4 different times since the bakery opened. Every time, it has been underdone in the middle. You go to slice the loaf, and the whole thing collapses; it doesn't stand up to the knife. And sure enough, it is just a tad gooey inside. If you're going to take the time to love the ingredients so much, you need to prepare it correctly. It is very frustrating! The raisin/walnut doesn't have this problem, because the raisins and walnuts hold up the interior structure. I can't leave this review without pointing out something: a loaf of bread at 1900 Bakery costs $8! I have never in my life paid so much for bread. We would eat a loaf a week with a meal, but at that price, we are once-a-month (at best) potential customers. I hope that over time, they will find a way to make costs more efficient. I don't know how that is sustainable over time -- particularly with Wheatfields (who also uses local heirloom flour, btw) at literally half the price per loaf. It's a cool little joint, but please give us this day, our daily bread baked properly and at a more reasonable price. read more

Update: went back to 1900 Barker in search of bread again, and this time hit the jackpot. Got the Everyday Loaf and it was the best bread I've ever had in the US, hands down. Maybe a tad moist inside but the crust was perfect, as was the flavor, as was everything else about it. Tried samples of the spelt bread and a raisin (I think, can't remember) bread. What I do remember was that the raisin-or-other was also fantastic: great texture, great crust, not too sweet. The spelt was spelt, have never been a fan, but it seemed well-made and kudos for experimenting with ancient grains, guys. I didn't check out the coffee accoutrements this time so can't comment on that but the bread is a winner. Get on over there for some bread, people, and in the early to mid-afternoon before they run out. read more

Watch out Starbucks! This little gem is a newly opened bakery and coffee shop located in east Lawrence. The breads and pastries are the best I've tasted outside of France! Honestly! According to co-owners Taylor and Reagan Petrehn, they source their as much of their fruits, vegetables and grains locally as possible. Their delicious breads are even half-milled in-house! The espressos and cappuccinos are better than Starbucks and are true works of art! I stumbled upon this place by chance while in town for a wedding. I will be back whenever I'm anywhere near the area in the future. You must try this place! read more

This coffee shop was alright, definitely not the best in Lawrence. I got the iced vanilla latte and it was okay, but afterwards I felt pretty nauseous. My daughter went in to buy me a matcha green tea when I was sick. The person making the drink did not make close to enough tea and asked what he should do. It was an iced drink and he was told to just add more ice. Unfortunately I live in the neighborhood and was looking forward to having a nice bakery café I could walk to, but considering my daughter went in to get me a drink while I was sick and that was what they chose to do I ended up with a cup of ice! This is the type of place you hope to find on vacation. We stopped by early one morning to pick up some of their bread. I left with two loaves of the smoked cheese bread and the oat porridge bread. I was really hoping for the roasted garlic, but it wasn't available. The bread is worth the trip and be sure to pick up an extra loaf or two to take home. I regret not getting a breakfast pastry as they all looked wonderful. I have so much love for 1900 Barker. The shop might seem small, but they are doing some mighty big things inside. From the breads to the coffee to the Wednesday pizza specials, 1900 Barker does everything right in my book. The bakery is small, so best to keep your party to less than three or grab something to go. There is an outdoor area that offers addition space when the weather in nice. Visiting Kansas from Alaska and drove down to check out the college town that KU calls home. Reviews led me to check out 1900 Barker and it did not disappoint. Latte with latte art was perfectly creamy and the savory tart with green tomatoes and peppered ham was phenomenal. No joke, I'm going to dream about it when I'm forced to return to the frozen tundra of Alaska. This place almost makes me want to move back to Lawrence. Everything they make is of the highest quality. I could eat the quiche every day and the morning buns are just the right amount of sweet with the flakiest of layers. They also know how to make amazing coffee. The americano is to die for. Stopped in here to pick up coffees and breakfast for the fam while we were here for the USATF Jr Olympics....pastries were fresh and unique...Lemon Curd Croissant and a Blueberry Creme Danish, awesome. All that was missing from the lattes was the cold mountain air to sit and enjoy them in. The Americano could have been a touch hotter but still good. I've only tried the pastries. The pain au chocolat gets a B -- OK, but nothing special. The double baked almond croissant could be a lot better, but its often overcooked and tough as leather -- you need a knife to slice it. The lemon filled croissant is delicious -- though they're often out of it. The staff is a mixed bag -- the guy is very friendly and helpful, the woman is rather grumpy. Oh, and this morning there was a big crowd of yahoos waiting outside -- no social distancing, no masks. So if you go there, be careful! read more

Probably the best croissants in Lawrence and way up there for the KC market too. Breads are fantastic too. Its a great, out of the way place to have a peaceful breakfast. Be prepared though to bring some bucks...its not cheap. If it were more affordable I would give it five stars. That said, I will go back...just not every week or weekend.
