Like going to a wedding of a couple you barely know, but assumed a bunch of stuff about them anyway. You get to the reception and discover new, wonderful things about them and the people they love that just make you happy and appreciative. We wanted Mexican. That's a sliding scale as you know. This is authentic Mexican. I'd almost call it premium, but the prices are too reasonable for the quality of the food you get. I've been in search for the best carne asada taco in Eugene as I am having withdrawals from Taco Chelo in Phoenix, AZ. I've been wanting to give this place a try, so I ordered some take out with my mini me. Here is my review strictly on the food... Flauta Bites: 10/10 seriously probably the best flautas I've ever had, the texture of the chicken was grounded or mashed and delectable. The guacamole that came with it was also a 10. I am a guac snob and ofter have "guac offs" with friends and my bowl gets licked clean, ijs, I knows what I am talking about. Mini Crunch (Potato Tacos): 9/10 I am a huge fan of potato tacos and I honestly thank the little sweet baby Jesus whenever I find a place that serves them. I wish it was a little cheesier and maybe some jalepeño would make it an 11. Chips: 8/10 Fresh with a sprinkle of salt, I think a little extra salt and a hint of paprika would set them off! Red Salsa: 4/10 something is missing from the salsa and I can't put my finger on it. Maybe someone needs to put their finger in it to give some flavor because it is bland with a very spicy delayed kick that is a borderline spoiler of enjoyment of your meal alert. Green Salsa: 3/10 also something missing and very bland but tastes better than the red. Asada Taco: 5/10 The meat was quality and it was served with grilled onions rather than traditional fresh onions which gave it more of a fajita flavor (but without the bell peppers and garlic), which was not what I was looking for. Putting the salsa on it made it worse. The tortillas are bomb tho! Olas Taco: 2/10 Probably the worse shrimp taco I ever had to be honest. If the salsa was on point it could have saved it. I wish my mimi me didn't go savage on the guacamole (she's so selfish), cause it would have made this taco a 6/10. I live in San Diego Experienced fan of Mexican cuisine. Was able to dine here Friday night. Skinny margarita was tasty if a bit light. The Barria entree was excellent. Home cooking quality and the chef is skilled with the seasonings. The dish contained the perfect balance of ingredients including jalapeños, which are often over powering but not here. This place looks so unassuming from the outside that I've driven by it countless times without ever stopping in. That was a mistake, as it turns out--the place is great! Everything homemade, full of flavor, homemade corn tortillas and things, with fabulous veggie options. The elote was so good: tangy, creamy, spicy topping on an ear of sweet corn, made with the best corn I've had in a while. I also tried a nopales (cactus) gordita, which soaked up all the flavors of their homemade salsa, plus queso fresco and the irresistibly squidgy texture of the thick corn dough on the bottom. And a side of refrieds which are vegetarian, not made with lard. The beans are salty and creamy and just right. I've given plenty of stars to other Mexican places in Eugene, but this place makes me question whether they all deserve it. So I guess 1960 Cocina gets 6 stars? It has the quality of restaurants in much bigger cities and reminded me of what I've been missing. Food takes a while and they were packed, so either arrive early or plan to hang out and nibble on appetizers. Also, their tortillas/gorditas are probably better eaten in-house than carried home as takeout, since it is inevitable that it will end up a tiny bit soggy at home. We had dinner there in a whim. It was amazing. We loved it. Loved the food. Loved the service. It was our new favorite place! Our daughter had a big birthday so we planned her birthday party there. Made reservations through their website (through google) in advance. Showed up on said day and they said that our party had not been confirmed and they did not have a table for us. Very disappointing, would not recommend. Don't know where to start. The house Sala was very bland and appeared to be something from a supermarket. We tried a variety of tacos, the meat looked like chicken nuggets from McDonald's, and the shrimp was pretty much unrecognizable. The Dos casadeas was one casadeas not dos as stated on the misleading menu, it was petite and uncooked with terrible tasting cheese, we couldn't eat it, nor did we finish the tacos. The server was dressed for a high-school keger, with his hat on backward and flannel overcoat. The decor was a sad attempt to be posh. Last but not least, the price was seriously inflated. So excited to have finally found a Mexican restaurant we love in Eugene! The dining room is small but very classy - so much so that we almost turned around when we saw it, as we had our 3 year old with us. They accommodated us brilliantly though, and we all loved the food and drinks. The guac, pineapple salsa, and chips were like they had just been made - fresh and mild enough for all to enjoy! The classic gordita was perfect for our daughter. The horchata and hibiscus drinks were whimsically presented in glass skull mugs and were super tasty. I found the Enchiladas de Queso to be flavorful but not spicy - as advertised - and the side of avocados and tomatoes was like a refreshing mini salad that complimented the dish. My husband said his Birria brought a good amount of heat and was also excellent. The two servers were doing multiple jobs but managed the room well and we didn't wait overly long for anything. This is a very sweet, family-run business and the waitress and waiter who served us were warm and gracious. The restaurant inside is small, modest and intimate. There is capacity for maybe 5-6 tables. There are a couple of tables outside right in front of the parking area. The food is delicious. We ordered the tacos and I look forward to going back and trying the enchiladas. The salsa is worth the visit: flavourful and spicy. If you order a lot of extras: i.e. chips/salsa, drinks, guacamole, it can add-up, but the tacos themselves were reasonable and good sized. For two soda waters, chips, guacamole and salsa, as well as two taco plates, it came to about $26 a person. They aren't typical Mexican tacos. They add a little exotic flavours (like pineapples, for example), which was surprising but delicious in the end. We like to support small businesses who are passionate about their offerings, as well as kind and welcoming to their customers. 1960 Cocina is a wonderful addition to the Eugene community. read more

I never got a chance to try this place pre-pandemic, so I can only speak to the takeout, but it's so, so good! I've eaten here multiple times, and it's always a hit. This is easily one of my favorite restaurants in Eugene. Everything is delicious and fresh and flavorful. I've mostly only gotten tacos (all types), but I'm sure everything else is great, too. Portions are good, too. They have online ordering now which will be convenient, but when they only had phone ordering it was good and efficient, too. I ordered a meal to go, the Chorizo Con Queso Fundido. After paying by phone, I was told to arrive at 7 PM to pick it up my order. I arrived a little early, but at 7 PM on the dot, I was handed my meal curbside. After arriving home, I opened up the bag, and pulled out the plastic to go container. On the lid, was a handwritten thank you! Inside the container, were two individual tin foil packets. One contained the tortillas, one contained the Chorizo. The tortillas looked hand made, and were nicely separated by sheets of paper. The Chorizo had a non stick sheet of paper underneath it, so the cheese wouldn't stick. Very nice individual touches. I proceeded to make my tacos. There were enough ingredients provided to make four large tacos - easily enough food for two people. Words cannot express how good these tacos were. Easily, by far, the best tacos I've had since arriving in Oregon some 30 years ago. And the Chorizo...oh my, sooooo good! My friends grandmother from the Rio Grande Valley took three days to make her Chorizo. It was to die for. The Chorizo from 1960 Cocina, rivaled her Chorizo. Two slightly different recipes, both mouthwateringly delicious. I didn't use either of the enclosed sauces, as I didn't want to cover up the wonderful Chorizo flavors. However, I did try them, and the were fantastic! The green sauce has a real nice kick. The sauces were so good, I used them the next day on my egg scramble. I'm so glad to have finally found a place that serves this type of authentic food. The ingredients and recipes are top notch, as is the care and love that goes into the making of such great food. Love the fresh made tortillas, I had a carne asada taco and it was full of tender chunks of seasoned steak and the El Tri Gordita which was stuffed with grilled peppers and cheese. I went there to celebrate a couple of days ago, it is okay to make it short. However, the food is relatively expensive and not worth the amount that you pay. It feels slightly better than microwaved Trader Joe's food. There are better places and that cost much less in the area. The food wasn't bad, it was just okay. There are Mexican restaurants and then there's Cocina. Most Mexican restaurants follow the tired formula of cheese enchiladas in a bland green sauce, flautas, tacos with uninteresting seasonings, flavorless rice and beans, margaritas made from a mix etc. and then providing enormous servings to compensate for the boring food. It's a testament to the Mexican cuisine itself that we've patronized these places in spite of that. But now there is a fine alternative right here in Eugene; some of the best we've had anywhere; including Mexico. The homemade sauces are unusual and unusually good. The meats are tender and imbedded with rich, deep flavors from marination and braising. The tortillas are housemade as are the chips. Every dish has unique flavors and textures with every bite a savory treat. The restaurant is small and always seems to have a lot of cars in the small parking lot - so we aren't the only ones enjoying this place. This is our go-to Mexican restaurant now; equivalent to Sabai for Thai food or Marche for Pacific Northwest cuisine in terms of quality of food. Go!! read more

This restaurant is doing its best to serve folks during the covid crisis. They set a table for 6 of us. The hors d'orves were good. Meals were also good. They didn't have much for vegetarians. We have mostly meat-eaters in our family and they devoured their food. I had chili rellenos as one of the only vegetarian options. They were delicious, too. Wow... What a wonderful place! My family is from the Jalisco/Zacatecas region and this was truly what I call authentic mexican food in my mind. I wanted to go to the kitchen to see if my mom or one of my aunts was cooking. It was incredible. Such yummy simple dishes cooked with love. We started off with some of the potato tacos. Again, just like my mom makes them with all the garnishes like cheese, tomato, and salsa. Next I had a carne Asada taco which was really good too especially with the handmade tortillas. I also got a guajillo beef gordita and that's what really won me over. It almost made me tear up because it was totally something my mom could've made or even something you can find in the most rural towns of Mexico where my family is from. Not going to lie, when I saw the inside setup of the restaurant, I thought they'd have fusion Mexican food. It had a bit of an elegant look that I wouldn't have expected of an authentic Mexican restaurant. The menus were printed on one sheet without pictures, but it added to the elegant feel of the place. Music was modern Spanish music and not regional Mexican music. It was enjoyable and at a good volume. The waiters were all extremely friendly as well. Afterwards I told my boyfriend that if I had been looking for good Mexican food, and I had happened to look through the window of this restaurant, I most likely would not have come in. It was such a nice surprise though and I'm SO happy that I came here. And because the first few dishes were so good, we ended up ordering the chorizo frijol tacos. We were definitely NOT disappointed! They had a nice kick to them and just wonderful flavors all around. I wish this place was closer to where I live because I'd be going there very often. I was excited to try this new restaurant after the strangely named predecessor. (I was never sure if it was a restaurant or a networking place) As I walked into the restaurant the room felt a bit cold and boring. Nothing special but I was still excited because I came there to eat. My wife and I chose the taco special because it looked reasonably priced at $9.00 and because tacos are just simply amazing. The good news is that the food was delicious however, the bad news is that we left hungry. No rice or beans accompanied the tacos and there was not chips and salsa delivered to our table. I did see chips and guacamole on the menu for $8 dollars though. Overall the quality was great but it lacked something special. We were headed to Kung Fu Bistro last night, but it was closed!! So disappointed, but we decided to try something new, and headed down the street to 1960 Cocina. What a nice surprise! We had no idea what to expect, and this is different than any Mexican restaurant I've ever tried. The menu is lovely, interesting, elegant. A little limited for a pescatarian like me, but that's ok. We ordered the guacamole, and weren't sure.....it seemed like a tiny dish, but was amazing, flavorful, hot and delicious. That little dish lasted us the whole meal. My husband had the carne asada. He said it was flavorful and good, if more thinly sliced than he was used to. I had the chile rellenos. With trepidation. I can't stand those thickly egged things I've always gotten, when I've ordered them. THIS was something totally different. Just the thinnest coating of egg, and the tender chile filled with melted cheese. It was delicious. And on the side, a hot little jalapeno, similarly prepared and stuffed with refried beans. No slathery, cheesy sauce over it, but a delicate, yummy sauce of oregano and translucent tomato on the side. I thought the dish was lovely, surprising, elegant, prepared with a light hand. 1960 Cocina has a fine dining feel, but is a friendly, lowkey, most welcoming place. It seems to be a family run restaurant, with the woman owner, and two younger people (son and daughter maybe?) who are attentive, kind, available, but never intrusive. We went in, not knowing what to expect, and left satisfied, feeling like we'd had a fine meal, wishing these nice people all success. We will be back. read more
