This is my second time at this emergency vet with one of my furr babies. Once again everyone was extremely attentive, and the level of service for my boy is second to none. It is never a good day when you have to visit an emergency vet, but the staff and doctors have done an amazing job making it comfortable, relaxing and most importantly not stressful on the animals. When you first walk into 1st pet the waiting area is clean, front office seem friendly, you have a since of hope. Only for it to quickly go down hill. We rescued a stray kitten who looked malnourished, her eye was swollen shut with pus and missing patches of fur with lesions on her skin. (Scary right?) we dropped her off with a vet tech and she advised us that they would contact us when she was ready to be picked up. We picked her up and another vet tech advised they suspected the lesions to be ringworm and they would call us back with the results in 3-4 days. We called on the 4th day to check on the results as we had not heard anything yet and were anxious to find out. The person on the phone said they would have a vet tech call us back. When the tech called us she said those results actually take 14 days and there was no reason to be calling. On day 16 we called again only to be told to basically "not call again" and that they weren't back yet. This whole experience with 1st pet has been extremely disheartening and made me feel unheard as a pet owner. We did not meet with a veterinarian once and spent loads of money $ to just be tossed aside. I do realize they deal with a lot of emergency/trauma patients, and those take priority. But if you are going to accept patients that are looking for a non emergent thing such as a ringworm test, you should at least give them the courtesy of meeting the provider face to face. We are all busy and I understand that the front office/techs are doing their best, but please be kinder and more thorough with your approach. - Sincerely your fellow pet owner. read more

Wow! We had a better experience this time even though my dog was badly sick and had to be put down. Dr. Butler was really great and Lily from the staff was even better. First, Dr Butler took her time with us explaining what was going to happen to our dog and gave us the option to put the dog down. My dog was 15 years old and not much life left in him. So we had to put him down. They took us in to this wonderful room with carpet and I was able to hold my dog until he was put down. Lily stayed with us until I was ready to give him up. She took him out of the room and let us do what we needed to do to go home. We will use them in the future if needed. read more

This Vet is absolutely horrible!!! Do not bring your pet here. Brought my pet in at midnight for a bite wound and was told the wait would be 5 hours.. 8 hours later he was still not seen. By this time my actually Vet was opened, so I went to pick him up. Of course this horrible Vet would not refund me my $140 exam fee because they did a pre examine so that counts. When asked what the pre examine consisted of they said they looked at the wound and determined he was safe to wait...8 hours.. and also took his weight. There are better vets available. This place is horrible please done give them any business. read more

Took my cat in for a minor issue. They misquoted the office visit fee - it ended up being $100 more than originally quoted. They wanted to run every test on my cat before they even had an idea of the problem - totaling over $1,000. Since they ripped me off on everything, I had to eliminate most of their services/costs. If I could give this place ZERO stars, I would! We took our 9 year old pup to their Mesa location on Southern and Higley to be euthanized after he had been sick for quite a while. We called first and spoke to someone on the phone about what was going on. Upon arrival, we gave all our information at the desk and again explained what was happening with our dog. We were taken back to a quiet room where a tech came in after about 15 min. I was already upset because it is not easy to decide when the time is right to euthanize a furry family member. After going over everthing with her for a third time, she left the room to talk to the doctor. When she returned, she told us the doctor was not comfortable putting our dog to sleep. She implied we just wanted to get rid of our dog! If that was the case, I could have dropped him off at the pound or taken him out to the desert. Why would I spend over $450 to do this?! Pet parents know their pets! Sadly, they made me second guess myself...and because of that, my pup suffered longer than neccessary. Our vet found that there was something systemic going on - even more than we realized. Thank goodness there are veterinarians and techs out there that actually know what they are doing! Not only do they care about the animals that come into their offices, but the owners that love and care for them. Don't take your pets to 1st Pet Veterinary Centers. I woke up in panic to see my little wiener dog covered in blood. It looked like it was coming from his ear but I didn't know if he had got attacked and didn't want to waste time. I drove up to 1st pet as it was the closest. Called the line and within 5 minutes someone was at my car to bring him inside to observe. Thankfully he just had a tiny cut on his ear that made it look way worse then it was. She advised that there rely isn't anything they could do because it was so small, And what I can do at home to help him out. All while calming my crazy dog mom nerves. I was honestly surprised I wasn't charged, I was expecting a 400 bill just for them looking at him. However it's clear that they don't operate just for compensation, which is so beautiful. I want to add the tech cleaned the blood off my dogs neck and face, it meant a lot to me. I will 100% recommend them to everyone based of this tiny experience. read more

We had to take our puppy here during the night when his health turned for thr worst in one evening. Our puppy unfortunately did not have a heartbeat when my husband arrived here however the staff asked my husband if they wanted to to CPR at a cost of $1100.00 for 15 min. Ethically why would you even attempt CPR on an animal if they do not have a heartbeat. I feel like they took advantage of my husband and made him feel like he had to pay this no matter what becuase he was in the lobby in front of other customers. They still have not reimbursed the $199 fee for cremation when they did not even do this for our dog. Our dogs remains were picked up by another vet... Hopefully they will take responsibility when my husband attempts to call tomorrow read more

Came in with our dog Jet who, over the last 12 hours, had one of his eyes become inflamed and visibly swell to the point where he couldnt keep it open. Nevermind the discharge that was crusted over it. As someone who works in the emergency setting of healthcare, I understand occular trauma is typically considered an emergency. Well in this emergency, we were brought to a room in the back of the building and waited for near 3 hours with not one employee checking in for any part of an assessment other than being seen walking in the door. Mind you during the three hours we waited we listened to the staff informing the doctor of various scheduled appointments and multiple other walk-in patients for triage. Well during that time frame I was able to dawn a set of gloves, get some gauze, clean the discharge from our dog's eye, obtain a weight, look up and call report to another walk-in clinic that charges 100 instead of this place's 150 and walk out the door without the staff even saying any form a goodbye. The doctors here may be fantastic however I did not get a chance to find out due to the poor staff/service. Update, the nice walk-in clinic we went to in Gilbert had us registered, assessed, treated, and prescribed all within an hour. read more

Took my cat here because he has urinary issues and it can be fatal if he is blocked and there is really not a way of me knowing. They told me he isn't blocked and then had me pay for an x ray and ultrasound. The vet convinced me that it was important. Looking back I should've known they just wanted my money. If he isn't blocked then why the need for x ray and ultrasound?? If it's to check for underlying urinary issues I can just do that with my primary vet. That wasn't even why I was furious with this place. I was told I can wait at home and they will give me a call in 1 hour. 2 hours have passed and I decided to check up on my kitty. When I called they said "oh yeah he's ready come on down". I got there and the vet basically said he forgot and thanked me for reminding him. Lol what??? So I get my sweet boy back and he is covered in his own urine in his kennel. He is absolutely traumatized from the "care" of this place, makes me wonder what could've happened back there to him. He's been more skittish since this visit, even towards us and he is the most outgoing sweetheart ever! It saddens me that they scared him like this. Horrible care. Not to mention all the dogs barking which I understand, but they did nothing to comfort him and put him at ease. We found a stray dog and took it in to check for a microchip, they stuck us in a room for almost an hour until we came out and reminded them we were waiting, they scanned, found a chip, came back a couple minutes later and said the 24 hour watch company for the microchip was closed and they couldn't take the dog. We told them we would not be able to take him home and we're just kind of brushed off. After about 20 minutes of calling different shelters to find someone to take him I called to check the hours on the microchip company and they weren't closed! After we got connected to the owners I went to complain at the front desk about them giving us the wrong information and was COMPLETELY brushed off by an employee and was told they would "take it under advisement". 1st Pet is incredible in all ways. It is a clean, easy to access location. Every single person on staff is kind, accommodating and understanding. I came in with a very sick dog and a very cranky baby and the front desk ladies went above and beyond bringing him healthy snacks, juice, water, and even put his favorite show on tv. As for my dog, she was treated with care and tested for everything and we are leaving with a happy, healthy dog. I am so thankful for 1st pet today and would not hesitate to come back or recommend to a friend. Thank you! read more

Avoid this nightmare place at all costs. Drive an extra hour if you have to but do not come here you will be so disappointment they don't care about you and they definitely don't care about your animal!! Arrived at 6:30 PM on a Monday and wasn't seen by the veterinarian until almost 10 PM! Kept being told we "were next"! No sincere apology/concern or compassion from anyone. Treated like I was annoying them. Then I was told to schedule a follow up appointment in "3 to 5 days" to have his drains removed which I did at 5 PM five days later on Friday.. I made arrangements to leave work early, drove home to get my dog, drove all the way back to the vet and when I arrived I was told they actually scheduled My appointment for the following Monday (seven days later) they could "try to squeeze me in but it would be a long wait"!!! WTH?? No way!! I guess the girl asked the vet to try & take care of him & she refused. Then the office manager Vanessa With a big smirk on face just pretty much told me I was wrong, I didn't have an appointment and she was NOT going to put me ahead of people who have an appointment! I had an appointment! No matter how many times I tried to explain to her I made a 5 o'clock appointment I made arrangements to leave work early the front office person made a mistake 100% and I was treated like absolute shit, disrespected and nobody there gave a crap about my poor dog with the drains in his back. It truly was the worst and most frustrating customer service handling I have ever experienced in 25 years of customer service. Find another vet another emergency room at all cost avoid this one!!! I am a new transplant to Arizona. My elderly cat was having problems with constipation and I called my former vet back in Illinois, and she told me that that I should immediately take my nearly 17-year-old feline to an emergency vet. I drove quite a ways to get here because their phone message said to just come, and they looked at my cat and because her vitals were stable they just gave me another list of potential emergency vets to take her to. I've waited over 6 months after my beloved German shepherd passed at the care of this facility to write this review. I wanted to make sure it was fair and honest and not based on the grief of losing my best friend. I had never been here before and immediately walking in they took my dog from me. I sat in the waiting room and that's when I met DR DEER. She had explained to me that my dog had a ruptured spleen that could be cancerous and my dog needed surgery IMMEDIATELY. I asked if she was sure and if I could get a second opinion (as this was not my usual vet) and she told me another vet would just tell me the same thing and by then it could be too late. I went ahead with the surgery and left him in overnight care. The series of events that happened after this day is why not getting a second opinion was the worst decision I ever made. I was called the next morning by DR DEER and she let me know my dog had taken a turn for the worst and that she had been preforming unsuccessful CPR for over 10 minutes and asked if I wanted her to continue at which I was responded well yeah? I was so taken back by what happened. I was hysterical, was she telling me my dog had passed? I asked if I could come in and she responded as if I had just thrown a wrench in her whole day and said rudely "well how long would it take you to get here" was that really an important piece of information after you called to let someone know there dog just passed. I got to the office and they had rolled my dog into the room and that was it. He was gone and I had no explanation why. Literally she could not and did not tell me anything about how he had passed. She simply did not know. And then I never saw her again. She left me with my dead dog and I never saw her again. I paid over $6000 dollars for an unsuccessful surgery and no answers to what had even gone wrong. This vet office broke me, I lost the most Important thing in my life and it was so casual to them. I am not saying this vet office is incapable of caring for your animals but I will tell you DR DEER is. read more

Terrible experience here. My 3 month old puppy was breathing heavy, swollen face, not moving, constant panting so we brought him in. The vet advised it was serious and that my puppy had fluids in his lungs which made it hard for him to breath. We only spoke with the vet once over the 8 hours my puppy was there. We had so many questions and they didn't tell us anything until we paid. $700 just for them to tell us he had fluid in his lungs and that he needs to be on the ventilator over night. No treatment plan, how it could have happened, what's going to happen. it cost 2k upfront for him to stay overnight and we could not afford it. We asked what we can do to help him at home since we can't afford for him to stay overnight. Vet said "nothing" and said we are basically putting our pets life at risk.... I was in tears. called another vet (luckily he had the same breed as mine and was willing to walk me through everything) I sent him over the x-rays and medical records from 1st Pet and he advised that keeping him on the ventilator would have worsened him as he needed to self cure. The ventilator would have only made him weaker. He also advised that there is antibiotics that would help but mostly just a lot of rest. will never go here again and will definitely advise others not to come here. read more

The staff at 1st Pet are absolutely amazing! about 2 years ago our little poodle; Rocky, was mauled by our neighbors dog and tore up his throat. We took him to here and they fixed him up real good. Last week our schnoodle; Scruffy; had passed away from an existing heart condition. As he was passing we rushed him to 1st Pet, but by the time we had got there he had already passed. I would rate minus stars if I could. We took my poor kitty in because she wasn't doing well. They kept her for 2 days, charging us a fortune in the process. Told us she had complete kidney failure. We took her home to be with her for a day and were told we could come back to have her put to sleep. Twice we confirmed with the staff that 1 of us could be present. They told us this despite knowing my husband had had the Covid virus. He is completely recovered per the CDC guidelines, yet they would not let him or I in to be with our beloved pet. I couldn't let her die with strangers, which left no option but to bring her home and have her suffer until she died here. Completely without compassion for our kitty or us. They should be ashamed to call themselves doctors. read more

When I picked up my dog he smelled terrible, they gave me no explanation of service or direction for home care. Within 24 hours my dog's staples tore. They also left a huge gaping whole without suture or staple. All his wounds were vestering, pussy and oozing. I ended up taking my dog to Bark Ave on Mckellips in Mesa to clean up the shitty work 1st Pet did. 1st Pet sucks! Bark Ave actually cleaned and flushed Jett's wounds and found dirt, debris, skin and string still in his wounds. 1st Pet sent my dog home with no hope of recovery and set him up for painful infections. Is this their way of getting more visits out of families? Along with some helpful input from our doctor at Bark Ave, we will be filing a complaint against this location, staff, and doctors with the state board. I've also request that they reimburse me. This place is supposed to be an emergency vet but will let you and your pet sit for hours before doing anything and we were the only people there! If this was a life or death issue they probably would have let the pet die and said there wasn't anything they could do from how long they make you wait! They sit you down for an hour plus just for you to walk out and ask what's taking so long to find out they just stuck my dog in a cage and said we haven't looked at her yet And this was a serious enough issue where she need someone there with her They proceeded to tel me it would be $200+ to just look at her and then drop more prices on me to tel me what was wrong But i was sitting there long enough to find out what was wrong with her through and online vet so i told them to give me back my dog before they started putting a bill together,(which seems like that's all they care about) Then the vet came out with my dog with a choke string leash and said she saw some stuff she was worried about, which was a flat out lie considering she hasn't even looked at her yet, they just wanted to tell me lies so i didn't take her home without being charged and i had to ask them to go and get my leash that i brought For them to take 10min to get. We took her to our vet They told us what was going on and told us that the vet here was lying about seeing something they she was worried about because other than the initial issue she was perfectly healthy. Waited 5 hours and then was told it would be another few hours. When I first went in I was told it would be about an hour. Then I was told it would be 3 to 4 hours. After 3 hours I called and was told my dog was next. After another hour I was told it would be another 1 to 3 hours because they were busy. I was in the parking lot the entire time. The only person I saw go in that last hour was the pizza delivery person. I guess a sick dog locked in crate doesn't take priority over pizza. What a horrible place. read more

***DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE!!!!!*** I read some of the comments before posting and they all reflect the same message. The doctors will leave your babies in a crate for hours until finally checking on them. You will easily spend $700-$2000 for one day because of all the "tests" ... and also, you will not receive empathy, nor the quality customer service you deserve. My dog has never been so ill until going to 1st pet. He had an eye issue, which evolved into a horrible cough a few weeks later. I went to the Chandler location but then I was sent to Mesa because they supposedly had space. After an overnight stay at the Mesa location (which mind you was only supposed to be 2-3hr wait) they advised a valley fever test. Of course I would pay for anything to just get answers and solutions. Days later I had to plead and beg for a call back from the hospital so I could try to make sense of his illness. They finally told me he tested positive. I forced them to prescribe the anti fungal medication so I could quickly get him on it which seemed like pulling teeth. I never did get an actual call from the doctor by the way. It was the receptionist who called me to pick up the meds. No information at all on his diagnosis. Thank God I can educate myself on valley fever via online. This place is a joke! They spend more money on the interior design and aesthetics (like getting fresh flowers delivered to themselves every Monday) believe me the receptionist told me about the flower delivery. They care about these small simple things instead of investing in the animal's lives. We as pet owners deserve to have quality care of our babies... we shouldn't have to beg for 1st Pet staff to do their jobs! They're taking advantage of fragile moments and robbing our community blind while putting our pet's lives at stake. I repeat, DO NOT GO to 1st Pet!!! You will regret it!! Your pet is worth so much more and you can find it elsewhere in the valley at a better hospital that wants the best for your pet and will truly put them 1st unlike this fraudulent chain!!!! read more

I'm very grateful for the vets here and all they have done for my dog, but feel like sometimes they can be completely judgmental and misinformed. My dog jumped out of my moving car while I was driving probably between 15-30 mph on Val vista. Window was down, he's never jumped out before and then all of a sudden he sees a man walking his golden retriever and decided he wanted to go hang with that dog and jumped out of my moving car. Because of that, he had a gash on his back and some minor cuts on his upper left shoulder. I was finally able to find a safe spot to pull over and grab him from running in and out of traffic. I didn't notice the gash on his back until we got him home about 30 minutes later. I then took him straight in knowing the gash was pretty deep. The had to hold him over night, put him under sedation and place sutures in the back gash. When Dr. Butler called to go over the at home treatment he will need for the next few weeks she asked if We had another dog in the home. I said yes and advised I would do my best to make sure she doesn't lick his wounds to make sure they heal properly. She then proceeded to inform me that his cuts and even the large gash on his back looked like a dog bite....... umm ya, you're probably right Dr. Butler.. nothing to do with him jumping out of my moving car... didn't really make me feel very good. I cannot recommend this vet office enough! They are so gentle and kind with my elderly dog. She is 16 years old and has a big attitude and sensitive joints. She is also only 6lbs so she is pretty fragile with her bad back and arthritis. They were super informative and gave me different options with different price points for her care plan so that I could do what she needed but also keep things affordable. The reception desk is super friendly and pleasant to deal with. The vet techs that come in to check her vitals are super gentle with her and very friendly. Doctor Lindgren is amazing and I can tell she really has my dogs best interest in mind. Also when I had to bring my cat in for an overnight emergency stay they let me come in and visit her on my lunch break (pre-covid not sure if that has changed due to the virus restrictions). When I got my other cat spayed somewhere else she kept slipping out of her cone because she is small. They let me bring her in so they could assist me with putting her cone back on free of charge. It was very comforting as I was so nervous to hurt or stress her out. They gave me a tip on how to keep her in the cone and also put it on her myself. Its a small thing that really made a difference for me, Im definitely a nervous pet mom. They really care about taking care of your pet instead of just trying to rake in dollars. Had to come here for a last second appointment since our regular vet could not get her in. Our dog was old and not doing well and we knew going in it might be time to make that difficult decision. The vet was honest and compassionate about our dogs condition and prognosis and it was an easy, all be it incredibly painful, decision to make. It had been a long time since I had to euthanize a beloved pet and the way these guys handled it with us being a 1st visit walk-in was top notch. We had a separate room with carpet and couches and chairs where we could get some alone time with Rio before and after and with a separate exit so the people in the lobby wouldn't see the emotional mess we were as we left. Our entire family was present, my 12 and 13 year old, as well as my wife and it was a very peaceful ending to our dogs life. They gave us as much time as we needed to grieve with her and boxed her up for us and brought her to our car so we could make the next stop at the crematorium (another positive experience). This one hurt. Rio was the same age as our oldest daughter and we had so many experiences as a family with her. The kids grew up with her, but it was time and 1st Vet was there for us. 1st Pet Veterinary Centers - Saying goodbye... - Veterinarians Near Me - Mesa, Arizona

I know this place gets a lot of heat for being over-priced and long wait times. I was with 1st pet for a year and 1/2 as our family vet. So here is my experience: My English bulldog had epilepsy (he was 2 and 1/2 when he started). He recently passed due to clusters that could not be broken (no one's fault at all, he was sadly a rare case). I have taken him many times to their ER over the last year when these seizures started, and they always took him back right away. I can honestly say this is a very loving group of vets and techs. They did everything they could for him and showed much compassion. Whenever he was in their care, I received many phone calls throughout the day on his status. The day I left them to take him to our family vet to get euthanized, the vet carried my 65lb EB to my car herself and told him "I love you Winston. I love you." This is NOT an uncaring staff, by any means. That being said....medication refills were a nightmare. By the time my pet was close to out of his prescription and I called in a refill, it was a painfully slow process to get his meds approved and filled. Half the time they wanted him to come back in for more blood work and more tests, but they never told called to tell me. So I'd find out a few days later, when I called because his script hasn't been filled, that's why they hadn't filled it. I legitimately heard a staff member tell someone (while I was there waiting on my own script to be filled) to deny someone else's prescription because they needed to come in but no mention of calling the owner. I wish I would've said something then, so they understood how important it was to call an owner so they knew why the script wasn't filled. If your pet has regular prescriptions, do not fill them here if you can help it. I wish 1st Pet would tell owners that you can fill elsewhere. I doubt they're make money off of prescriptions. So I'm telling whomever is reading this, use GoodRX and get your script filled at a human pharmacy. My boy's meds went from $300/month to $80/month. Or, if you live close to Red Mountain Compound Pharmacy on Brown Rd, their prices are competitive to GoodRX but they don't take GoodRX. However, it isn't necessary there. I can agree with other reviewers that they're overpriced. I'm so glad I found our original family vet who left the practice for a short time and started a new one which I was pleased to find was only a block away from 1st Pet. I highly recommend Higley Groves Animal Hospital, they're only a block up the road. Higley Groves also refers patients to 1st Pet in the case of emergencies, so there's a good connection between the two. Overall, I've only had good ER experiences with this vet. As a family vet, I feel they're overpriced. They can also work on their communication when it comes to prescriptions. I wish I could give them 5 stars but the prices and the lack of communication just added more stress to the situation of handling his seizures. read more

Visited this location as an emergency visit when my dog became very ill. This facility is amazing. Clean. State of the art equipment and beautiful building. The vet we saw was also wonderful, thorough and thoughtful. Would have given 5 stars but I was slightly annoyed at the front desk person who didn't seem to know what she was doing, as well as at the vet tech who couldn't pronounce a commonly prescribed med (even though I repeated it several times- it is not a weird named drug so it was just annoying). Very expensive but you do get what you pay for. I did find out that they can be used for routine visits as well as long as you make an appointment during regular workweek hours. I would give this place a negative star but I can't so here it so here it is.. I feel like clinics like this is OVER PRICED AND A SCAM. We brought our dog to this Over price Scam hole because of a bloody tooth that was knocked loose playing with a bigger dog. They made us wait 6hrs and charge us $200 to tell us the tooth was loose and needs to see a vet and they DO NOT HAVE X-ray capabilities in the facility. $200 for your expert opinion about a lose tooth THANKS what gave it away one of the tooth not in line with the others and protruding out.. at least give some pain meds to ease the discomfort... next victim and suckers please read more
