This is a fabulous pet hospital. We came in on a sunday. I was scared. my pet was in distress. They saw us right away. They knew exactly what to do and resolved the situation in the first visit. They are caring and compassionate and intuitive. I couldn't have received better care for our dog. As we were waiting for short wait to see the vet, they even offered us a nice variety of people snacks. It was a delightful experience! read more

With my cat's issue, my regular vet made me feel very judged, however the doctors here did not, and I could tell they just appreciated I was getting the help for my pet. Had to rush my Cock-a-Poo here yesterday and the staff immediately tended to him. It ended up being a bee sting and he had an allergic reaction and is fine (thank heavens) but the staff was on top of It and I felt comfortable knowing he was being looked at immediately! I am giving this place one star only because the veterinarian Dr. Begay was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. The staff I would have slapped if I wasn't such a wreck worried about my cat. This is not my first experience with this vet, my last few encounters with another very sweet cat and another time with my dog was absolutely unpleasant. I decided to give them another try because of their high recommendations. There are bad impressions and then there are 1st pet vet impressions. The staff was totally unwilling to listen or give any consideration to my very angry unfriendly cat. I let them know ahead of time to protect themselves but also show kindness because my kitty only likes me. They proceeded in the few hours we were there to let my cat jump off the table and fall on his face, twice, get so stressed running from them he lost a nail and when I told them they looked at a different toe that was stubbed a few days prior and told me it wasn't their issue it was old blood, totally looking at the wrong toe, then they jabbed him with a needle without holding him down getting the sedative all over him and the floor and loosing the needle in the process. The one blonde tech was so rude she expressed her deep frustration with us and my kitty multiple times while we were in the room. I don't think they also can realize that we can hear them through the door Too when they are talking sh*t about my cat trying to pawn off his x-ray on other techs and expressing deep frustration to be the selected participant. After three sedatives they took him back and a few minutes later another tech came out to let me know that I was the problem and kitty was fine without me and instructed me to leave the room next time. My brother asked "are you sure it wasn't the three sedatives you gave him?" He ignored the comment. After everything the bill was absolutely horrendous but it's an emergency vet so I get it they will bend you over backwards without lube. The super b**chy tech came back in and told me to come back for weekly visits on Tuesdays or Thursday's. I told her I would look around for a regular vet to which she reprimanded me that they were in fact a normal vet and took regular appointments and where I should schedule. I was like noooooooooooo thanks. Never ever again. read more

My puppy was having tremors, throwing up, and lethargic to the point where she couldn't keep her eyes open. The receptionist put us in a room as soon as we got there but no one checked on us for the 3 hours we waited before we just decided to leave and go to a different emergency vet. After an hour and a half of waiting to be seen I went out to the receptionist and asked if I could get a time frame of when we might be seen but she couldn't give me a time frame and kept saying "I think you might be next in line". We gave them another hour and a half but still no one came to check on us. All the while, over that span of 3 hours we could see through the window of the door multiple people being helped out in the room across from us by different vet techs and veterinarians. My puppy's condition obviously wasn't enough of an emergency to the staff at 1st Pet for them to check on her in any way. I wouldn't recommend going to this location if you actually care about your pet. read more

Our pet ate a large amount of grapes, which we knew could be very toxic to dogs. Our initial call to 1st Pet (recommended a long time ago by our vet) confirmed our concern and prompted us to immediately bring our pet in for evaluation and treatment at 9pm. The staff was very welcoming, provided useful information regarding poison control recommendations and possible outcomes, and the vet completely described the course of action they would take. They promised a follow up call in the morning which they fulfilled, and they encouraged us to call whenever we wanted an additional update. Their Mesa location is beautiful, a perfect setting with windows from the treatment rooms, fish tanks and zen music in most rooms. They even collect payment in the room. Their emergency docs are fantastic but my confidence in Dr. Waldo is gone. Not only did he give us a very outdated treatment plan for one of our dogs, he ignored the history of our other dog and wouldn't prescribe the medicine that has worked for her inner ear infections historically. read more

I came here two nights ago for an emergency visit. My puppy became very ill and they did a parvo test on her. With a ten minute exam they let me know she unfortunately did have parvo. With such sad news, they gave me options as to how to go about curing my puppy. I always assumed parvo killed dogs within two to three days. But the staff let me know there were high hopes for her. I chose to take my dog home (with an IV and medication as prescribed by them) which may seem expensive to some, but my dog is no longer bleeding or throwing up violently. The other option was to keep her therr for three nights. She seems to be recovering great! If it weren't for this place I may not have my puppy here today. read more

I will not be going back! An IV was started on my cat so she could be euthanized. Dr Deer gave her the sedative before the "final injection". She didn't seem sleepy at all? Then the Dr pushed the final one. She is still awake. I then question whether the IV is in the vein? "Yes.....I can feel the meds go in. She is just a fighter. I am gonna get another sedative injection." Dr Deer comes back and gives her another sedative and then the cat is walking around? I then told her I have seen dogs put down before, it happens quickly. The IV is not working, can you check for blood return? She says, "Are you In the medical field?" Yes I am. She told me the IV can be in the vein without blood return. Yes this is true but this IV clearly is not working. The cat starts crying again. Then she agreed that a new IV needed to be started. New IV started and within seconds after ANOTHER final injection she acrossed the rainbow bridge. read more

I picked up a stray kitten off the street and brought it in to have an exam and its first shots. I felt ripped off after my visit, having spent $45 for the vet to tell me something I already knew by looking up her symptoms on Google. They offered to do preventative testing, but didn't give her any shots; Suggesting that I set up an appointment in 1-2 weeks to see if she is able to have her shots then. Seems like they're more concerned with milking customers than providing care. Nice computers though. read more

I was extremely disappointed. My cat isn't social and they treated her like she had the plague. You would think that they would have the experience to handle all different types of personalities. This was not the case. I was not clearly informed of the aftercare instructions. The vet assistant bedside manner was very snippy and ran through aftercare very quickly . Our pup had a 3am bloody nose that wouldn't stop. We took her to 1st pet and they were so nice and very quick in helping her. We were expecting a massive bill, and it was only $100 for the visit and the treatment! We thought that was more than reasonable for an emergency visit. Where do I begin? My months old puppy had suddenly became ill. We thought perhaps he may have ingested something. We knew it wasn't parvo because he had his vaccines already. We rushed him to this Emergency center at 3pm. We were placed in a room where a vet tech came in 15mins after, who was very lovely and kind, and attended my baby. At this point my dog was very very sick, he was throwing up and had very bloody diarrhea. Regardless, after the vet tech stepped out, the DVM did not come into the room until 5:30pm. I had to go to the reception to ask how much longer the dog had to wait to be attended, because at this point, he was looking worse and worse and had developed some sort of shivers. The receptionists gave me a look as if I was rudely interrupting her time being spent on her cellphone. Upon walking into the room, I did not feel as though the vet really cared for my dog's well being. She proposed a treatment plan and began discussing the cost of such treatments. I felt as though they cared more for the money than for helping my baby. After doing some x-rays, they did not know what was wrong with him and therefore She insisted the dog had to be hospitalized for at least 24hours in order to run more tests and treat his symptoms which would be a ridiculous amount of money that we could not afford for him to only have a 50/50 chance of surviving (as she had told us). We chose to only have him hospitalized for 12 hours. At around 7pm we left him to be hospitalized, which you have to leave a 75% deposit to have him hospitalized. I got a call around 9:30pm from the DVM saying that 12 hours was not enough to really make a difference to help him and that he had to be hospitalized at least a couple of days, which was about $5,000 in addition to the $2,000 we had already paid before leaving him at the hospital. When we returned to the hospital around 10pm, my poor baby looked so so so much worse than when we had left him. He was so weak, he could not open his eyes and was barely breathing. Because we could not afford to have him hospitalized for as long as the vet insisted, we had to euthanize him. Before leaving I asked to have a copy of the medical record, which stated he may have had gastroenterocolitis, which the vet did not mention to us. Overall, I feel that the wait time along with medical neglect worsened his situation. I am mostly hurt by the feeling that my dog was not treated as part of someone's family. I am now left with a large medical bill to finish paying and no dog. If you care for your pet, I would maybe look for another place to take him to in case of emergencies. read more

I took my dog in after she as attacked by another dog and had one puncture wound on her chest. First of all, the only reason we went there was because it was ten o'clock at night and we ended up being there for three hours for a small wound that required 3 stitches. They told me that my dog's procedure would take about 30 minutes, then came back an hour later and said it would take another 45 minutes. Then when it came time for me to pay, they tried to charge me $200 more than the stated estimate. After they fixed it to the estimated cost they charged me twice. read more

I brought my five year old West Highland terrier into 1st Pet Veterinary Centers in an emergency situation. Out of the blue my dog was not able to walk, he was shaky and I was afraid he was having a seizure or a stroke. My dog was in distress. Dr Sanchez provided a standard protocol treatment and was very nice. After nearly, $1,000 worth of tests, I still don't know what is wrong with my dog and I am following up with my vet. My issue is that her staff could use some retraining. One of the tech's took a liking to my little guy. Towards the end of our three plus hour ordeal, she insisted on picking him up, putting her face next to his and my dog growled several times to let her know he was not happy about what she was doing. A dog who may have had a seizure, was in distress, had been poked and prodded and had things shoved up his behind. We tell five year old children never to put their face in a dog's face, particulary when they are confused and experiencing distress. I expect a animal hospital to be professionals, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY CHARGE WHAT THEY DO. When I received a phone call from the City of Mesa Animal Control regarding the dog bite, I was thrown off guard. I learned it is standard for animal care to report all dog bites (nip) My dog is now quarantined for ten days as it is standard protocol. WOW! So here is a thought, train your employees not to force their face in any dogs face, let alone one having a medical emergency. Teach them to listen to the animal. While they are our fur babies, they are animals. I can't wait to discuss this issue with my normal vet. I hope I never need an emergency and I will be asking them for places that they trust. read more

I brought in a very sick kitty on a Sunday to the clinic on Southern in Mesa, AZ. The staff and vet were very caring and concerned; however...... Even before I got to talk to the vet about the cat's condition (she was in another room being looked over by the vet) there was a gal with a clipboard and pen telling me it would cost between 400 and 800 dollars just to get the cat stabilized so she could be treated. The vet came in while I was trying to digest this and gave me the bad news which ultimately led to having kitty put to sleep. Before this happened, however, there was the lady with the clipboard again wanting payment, $400 (cremation included). Afterwards, I was a wreck. Bad enough losing a fur baby, but this one had been my husband's and I had lost him just a year earlier. So there I was left alone in the little room clutching an empty carrier and crying my eyes out. I didn't know what to do next, so I left. No one bothered to ask how I was doing, if I was OK to drive home, or if I wanted them to call someone. The deed was done and they had their money so they were done with me. read more

Outstanding customer service and veterinary care. We brought our dog in on Labor Day Holiday because of lethargy and pain. We were expecting a limited staff and high prices but the front desk staff signed us in and brought us to a private waiting room and supplied us with refreshments while we waited. A very friendly and comforting nurse did the initial screening and then Dr. Kirk examined our dog while sitting on the floor to avoid the pain he experienced when lifted. She was extremely informative, gave us an initial estimate for the price of care and then lovingly took him for testing. The diagnosis was a narrowing of vertebrae in his back. The final price was less than the original estimate and included all the needed medicine and a careful and complete explanation of what we needed to do to help his recovery. We could not have asked for a better experience for both us and our dog. I highly recommend 1st Pet Veterinary Center in Mesa, Az. read more

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! Everyone was very compassionate from the time we walked in the door. Our EmmaLee was having really bad seizures and also had a bladder blockage, which is why we took her to the emergency vet. We all knew she didn't have much time left unless we did the emergency surgery right then and there. She already had bladder surgery but the stones came back very quickly. Her seizures were getting extreme and we said goodbye to her so many times as she was having them in the later days. In the coming days, we decided to send little our little girl to heaven through her regular vet. But First Pet Animal Hospital worked with our pharmacy for 2 days to get her medication right. They called us the next 2 days in a row to check on us. When they called for the third time to check on us, we told them then she had passed. Two days later, we got the sweetest card in the mail signed by everyone on their staff. Especially considering that this was the first and only time we were there ever, it is clear this a staff that truly cares about animals and their humans! I never thought an emergency vet would be so caring, but this one changed my mind! read more

A few weeks back, of course on a weekend, our cat became ill and we were referred to 1st Pet. Lucy ended up spending all day Saturday there while they did a few procedures to relieve her symptoms (impacted colon); we brought her home early evening with some medications and instructions. On Sunday, as instructed, we returned to 1st Pet as her symptoms were not completely relieved; she spent another entire day there with more procedures which resulted in relief for her. From the receptionist, the vet tech. and the veterinarians, everyone was compassionate and knowledgeable. I must give a special shout-out to Dr Jolene North who, on Sunday, did not give up on working a more conservative route (easier on both Lucy and our pockets) to result in a good outcome. They also sent all information from the weekend to our regular veterinarian so they could follow up. I would highly recommend 1st Pet! read more

About two weeks ago, in the evening, I had taken in my Maltipoo who appeared to be in pain and wasn't acting himself in the preceding days. That little guy is my life and it was tough to see him suffering. I've never been to an emergency vet prior to our visit, so I really had no idea what to expect. I couldn't have asked for a better experience under the circumstances. The lobby and offices are very clean, and the staff is warm, compassionate, and accommodating. We were seen right away after a thorough examination and treatment options were explained. Luckily my pup didn't have anything too serious and made a speedy and full recovery. I had seen some negative reviews on here and just wanted to share my positive experience. Yes, you are required to pay at the time of your visit, after a conversation regarding cost and possible treatment options with the vet. No, it isn't cheap, however it is what you'd expect of a trip to the emergency room, and well worth the piece of mind. read more

Yet again 1st Pet exceeded my expectations. The staff is extremely friendly and get the job done. We have a 9 year-old mini dachshund that went into shock about a year ago. It didn't look like she was going to pull through.. She ended up staying at 1st Pet for about 24 hours until they called to tell us she was ready to come home. During the time she was there we had called a handful of times to check on her status and they were always friendly and understanding of our worry. We went from thinking she wasn't going to make it to her still being with our family today. Then, just this last Friday, we had brought in our German Shepherd puppy in around 3am due to her right eye being swollen completely shut for unknown reasons. They were, again, extremely friendly and great with our puppy. She's still recovering but doing MUCH better due to 1st Pet. Their prices are ridiculously reasonable for being a 24 hour vet. I highly recommend them to everyone! read more

My shih-Tzu, Chowder, was attacked by a pitbull one evening and I took him into 1st Pet. I was extremely distraught and my dog was in so much pain. The receptionist, Summer, immediately took us into a private room. She was so sweet and made us feel at ease. She even brought in a big basket of snacks and drinks for us. Joey was also great when he came in to examine Chowder. He was very professional, gentle and kind. I could tell he really cared and my dog was very comfortable with him. Dr Gassman was also wonderful. She came in and explained the treatment plan very well and answered all of our questions. I knew Chowder was in great hands. Everyone there was so caring, kind, professional and knowledgeable. I also thought their prices were very reasonable and the emergency visit was a lot less than I anticipated. I've never had to take my dog into an emergency vet, but this place exceeded my expectations! The clinic was also very clean, nice and calm. I'm new to AZ and did not have a regular vet, but plan on making 1st pet my regular vet! Can't say enough positive things about this clinic. I would highly recommend. read more

This place is awesome. They took both my dogs in, back to back, with no appointment. My dogs got out of the house and after searching for 4 hours we had to call it a night. Four hours after that my dogs we scratching at my front door. They must have done a lot of running. I took them in because their paw were bleeding. It turns out they wore the pads right off the bottoms of their paws. Dr Heather Sanchez was AWESOME. She was very kind and thorough to check both my dogs over to make sure they did have any injuries (because when we were searching we found a lady that said she saw our dogs together and that she hit one of them) Thank heavens neither one of my dogs were actually hit by a car. Summer, the front receptionist, was also amazing and also kind and caring as well as the rest of the staff. If you ever have an emergency in east Mesa come by and see these folks. Thank You for taking such good care of my dogs!!!! As a side note the charges were not nearly as bad as I thought they were going to be for an emergency visit. read more
