I had a very fine experience at this attractive and quaint little shop . Both kirk and Melba were very attentive and forthcoming with their very good judgment and advice .There is a certain polite pride in kirks style .I appreciate a person who says what he thinks and knows his business well . I found so many attractive choices to make that we put away about 5 frames for me and ordered 3 more at Kirk's suggestion ( which took some days ) just so I could pick the best one for me . When I left because there was no more to see that afternoon I had crossed the street and about a block away I felt a slight tug at the end of my bicycle , and it was Melba . As I didn't have lenses put in here (I purchased the frames only), I'm holding out on the last star. It is a small store, but surprisingly packed with frames (and quite a selection of boutique frame makers like Francis Klein and Anne et Valentine). I have been here about four times over the course of 6 months and have asked to try on almost every pair in the store (okay, I lie, maybe about half) and have never been pressured into buying anything. I've even accidentally delayed the store from closing and the manager (owner?) just kept bringing down glasses for me to try. And, uh, by the way, the store closes at 6pm. Whoops. Those in the search for a bargain may want to look elsewhere, but for art on your face seeking types, this is a good place to visit. read more

I called to schedule an appointment for my elderly employer to replace a pair of broken glasses and update his prescription. The following was our conversation: Me: "Hi, I'm calling to schedule an appointment for my employer - for tomorrow if available." He: (annoyed) "For what?" Me: (confused) "An appointment - can you hear me clearly?" He: (short) "Yes I can hear you. For whom? For what? People don't make appointments here, they just walk in." I've bought a few pair of glasses with them over the past several years. Their customer service is outstanding. They have a great selection. But if you just want utilitarian frames for a particular reason they don't try to steer you to the most expensive ones and are happy to pull out the box of the mass-made ones that are often quite nice, and make a great pair of glasses with a prescription lens. If your glasses get broken, bent etc, Kurt is always happy to give them a tweak or repair, usually quickly and on the house. Not that I'm looking for free stuff, but if you are a customer they really take care of you. They also do great custom work in tinting to what you want. Great fitting. Very friendly. A real find. I'm from out of town, and had been suffering with new glasses that were digging into my nose and felt like they were cutting through one ear. OUCH!! I tried getting them adjusted at a big chain optician. It was worse. As I was walking down Lexington, I happened on Henry Miller Opticians and stopped in. Amazing. He took the time to really ... REALLY work with my glasses, repeatedly working with the glasses and then trying them on me. If I lived here, I'd be a loyal brand advocate and customer. read more

Kirk was recommended by my new optician (Eric Zweifach, also terrific). This doc stated there is no one better, and he was absolutely spot on. Melba, with her graciousness and quiet dignity, will move you through the process. Kirk will present you with extraordinary results. He has access to a mind-boggling array of lens shapes as well as a state-of-the-art no-weight Swiss frame company should you so choose. In my case, I brought in my old Silhouettes, which he was able to retrofit with differently-shaped lenses. The standard of excellence is high. Kirk is one in a million. I have very conflicting feelings about this shop. On my first visit a few weeks ago I wasn't quite finding what I wanted on my own, so I ended being helped by a gentleman who brought out an excellent pair by Lindberg that wasn't on display. I was taken aback a bit when he kept saying "it's very expensive" - a subtle way of implying I couldn't afford them. They actually turned out to be not egregiously expensive, and he gave me the make and model so I could remember them. Today I came back to try them on again and found a much nicer lady working. She found the pair in the back, answered all my questions, and couldn't have been nicer to me and my friend. I decided I wanted to buy them but wanted to shop around to see how their price checked out. She completely understood. I called back later this afternoon to figure out the color of the glasses since I found out that the price of the frames is different based on their color. The gentleman that had originally helped me weeks ago answered the phone, and I gave him my name and asked if he could let me know the model and color. He responded, "I'll give you the color, though I don't think you're coming back here" in one of the most snooty tones I have ever heard. Boom. Turns out that their price was the best I had found BY FAR, though I will not be giving them my business. Price isn't everything. read more

In a world where Warby Parker is trendy and handily taking over the eyeglass business, I am still going to come back for my next pair of glasses at Henry Miller Opticians. Kirk Gerchberg is the optician. He is old school, a class act, and his parents owned the shop before him. The shop itself has been around since 1906. I recommend this shop 100 10000% because their service, product quality, and expertise are amazing. I got a broken leg on my own frames replaced FOR FREE (Kirk offered, then insisted on the free aspect when I asked to pay). Kirk not only carefully found TWO PAIRS of legs that could fit my type of frames, but he then worked to fit the one I really liked to my glasses for so long that I felt guilty! And he told me to come BACK if they break because he would replace them again. Who does that nowadays? Not many people... in fact I had asked about 8 or 9 shops all over Manhattan and Queens before this. (Full disclosure, the opticians at Costco in LIC also offered to repair it for free but I just haven't been able to make it out there before this). Kirk saved me a few hundred dollars and gave me such amazing service and humanity. The lady who helped manage the shop as well was a joy to speak to while I waited. She very kindly explained how to pick the best frames given my high prescription, and when I asked about pricing, explained to me that the frames in the shop go from $21 - $1000's. I urge you to give this wonderful, classic, and only in New York shop a try. They're not hurting for business either. In the half an hr or so I was in the shop, four different long time patrons came in. They do not take traditional insurance, but will fill out any reimbursement forms you have and can write a letter for reimbursement purposes. I read the other reviews because based on my experience I expect many people to sing their praises (and they do), and it seems the few low reviews were based on an experience with perhaps a less pleasant shop manager than the lady I met (who other people praised rightly), but I don't think it's fair to give such a bad review based on that one experience, although I do agree that his behavior was a big turnoff. In this business, 80% is service! read more

A creepy place with crappy attitude. I went in and bought a pair of frames. It took them two go arounds (neither successful) to fulfill the prescription. Kirk claimed that his not being able to fulfill the prescription correctly was my fault and gave me two nonsensical lectures. He is also unattractively critical of his competitors. Probably the rudest staff I have ever encountered. You are basically ignored for a quite some time while you are there until you forcefully ask their assistance. I ended up purchasing a pair of glasses there. However, when I asked for some prescription information later on, they refused to give it to me and gave no reasoning. I had a wonderful experience because Kirk and Melba were very pleasant ! Kirk was able to fix my broken sunglasses.I had dropped my prescription polarized sunglasses when I was opening my door and they got crushed .Kirk was able to brilliantly piece together the 4 or 5 shattered pieces I presented him with .Initially I went there because the sunglass frame which was about 8- 10 years old was no longer available but the company was very helpful and found two in a warehouse.I had to go to a retailer that carried their frames to order them which is how I came to Henry Miller opticians- a delightful store filled with interesting frames.Kirk wanted to see if they could be repaired and he did a spectacular job. My frame was no longer available from LA EYEWORKS in the color I had and it was great to get them repaired so beautifully because mine are a more flattering color .I am definitely going back for my next pair of prescription glasses and there was no charge for this remarkable service. read more

Anyone taking the time to read ALL the reviews here on Yelp will find a disturbing pattern. Mostly high 5-star ratings, and yet ALSO also a significant percentage of 1-star ratings. About 20%. How can that be? My experience might be helpful. Like many reviewers, I too was very positive about Kirk Gerchberg and the service he provided. My review would have echoed many of the other 5-star reviews in terms of his expertise and help in solving my problem. So much so that I sent my daughter to him, and recommended him to others. However, recently I had a terribly disturbing experience. I was in the neighborhood and checked in with him about something I needed done. No problem. He said it would only take a few minutes. Two weeks later, I called to ask if it was a good time to come in. He said, yes...although he sounded distracted and busy. I arrived exactly on the agreed on time. His assistant told him I was there. He yelled back from his workspace..."tell him to come back in the morning." I tried to explain that he'd told me it would only take a couple of minutes. He came out and as the saying goes...went ballistic. It was a completely other side of Mr. Gerchberg. Yelling, making all kinds of accusations against me. I tried to be calm, tried to remind him what he had said, but he was having none of it. I quietly picked up my glass cases and left. I asked his assistant, "What happened to him?" She said, "He's very good at what he does." Well, I thought, not good enough if he has the potential to go off like that. BTW, also a warning: during the whole episode Mr. Gerchberg was not wearing a face mask. Having someone yell at you in an enclosed space without a face mask is simply dangerous and thoughtless. I was wearing a mask, but in a situation like that, one person wearing a mask isn't good enough, either. So...you might get great service. Or, you might find yourself in a position you never want to be in. Beware. read more

What a nice shop. I stopped in asking to have my glasses adjusted - glasses I had bought from another, unrelated store - and Kirk and Melba agreed to fix them free of charge. Kirk spent about ten minutes adjusting them to my face. Now they fit like new. While I was waiting I perused the selection-- Melba showed me a number of beautiful pieces. These guys are pretty close to the state of the art in eyewear! They have a great selection of hip, sophisticated frames and their provider for progressive lenses beats Zeiss by a long shot. The woman who worked with me was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, answering every question in detail. Fantastic service and, given the high level of quality of the products they offer, reasonably priced. But don't go here expecting Lenscrafters or even Cohen's Optical. I love glasses, collect frames and this is my favorite eyeglass store. The style of frames here runs from conservative to downright funky. Kirk the owner and Melba his lovely sales person know when to leave you alone when you are making a choice, or give you their input.
