Based on a recommendation by this cool hipster chick from the East Village some 6-7 years ago, I checked out Fabulous Fannies and they have been my go to spot for frames ever since. For years I had been a slave to commercial optical stores which never seemed to provide enough character, uniqueness or style unlike what I've experienced at Fabulous Fannies. FF is small but they offer a plethora of styles ranging from vintage to old classics to modern to ultra-chic. My understanding is that about half of the frames on display are designed solely by them. Unique frames can be found here for a fraction of the cost of the commercial spots, in addition to helpful, truthful and in no way overbearing salesmen with great customer service skills. To add, there is also an adjoining store that I would describe as an antique haberdashery for women, where they sell dresses, gowns, hats, accessories and more. I've been coming here for years partly because I'm absentminded and keep losing my glasses. Last year I got amazing metallic half oval oversized frames and a small cute purple pair, an egg shaped shiny sliver pair and a simple silver aviator like one that was FAB. All bloody misplaced. So I found myself having to give a talk at work and needing to see and made my way over to FF. It was quiet and there's a sign on the door that discourages people being on their cell. They pointed me in the general direction of what I described that I wanted and let me browse in peace. It was cool with them that I took out frames and lay them next to each other for comparison and they said that they would put them back so not to worry about making a miss or mixing things up. Everyone gave input and helped me narrow the field down to two. Eventually I picked the winner for today and I do have to say that here is where this place is at a quasi disadvantage against all the other glasses places that abound in NYC. They only have one pair. So I couldn't get two (knowing I'll lose it for sure). But hey! I get to be unique. I highly recommend this place over WP or Lehrer quirky glasses places and must note that there is a gram for everyone even the more staid friends that I have tuned into this joint like it very much. I love this place. It is a cute tiny shop with out being too claustrophobic. Too bad because of one sales person they didn't get 4 stars. There is an older short little caucasian lady that works there who is just a nasty piece of work. The only person that she was willing to help was my male friend, who probably is a little more extravagant and eccentric than your average guy...But to me I might have as well not been in the store...she pretty made me pretty aware that she was not going to help me...oh well I don't need some mean lady helping me with my glasses...I have more style in my my pinky finger than she has in whole body. *Mean Lady-If you only want pick and peck when you help people then maybe you shouldn't be working with the public...like at all. There are all kinds of frames here. I don't consider the 1980 vintage because I lived that era with glasses and it was quite frightening :)...but they have some that go back even further and some more modern looks as well. The gentleman who was working at the front register however was the nicest guy in the world...full of smiles and when I tried on a pair of frames near the register that clearly didn't look as good as the ones I had in my hands...he's like "the ones in your hands are much prettier on you". Just very kind...without the push. I've always hated having to wear glasses. From when I was a little kid. I've found glasses here and there that compliment my face but overall, I just think they're annoying and I look better without them. Also I can not wear contact lenses. Then I found Fannys. Fanny's changed my life. With my first pair of reasonably priced, oversized vintage frames, I found the true Sadie S. - someone who my mother says is willing to submit to "voluntary disfigurement" but to whom hipsters instantly cede a certain measure of vague respect. The selection is great, the prices are low, they let you linger and try as long as you like - and the optician in Chinatown whom they recommend is inexpensive and efficient. FF's doesn't advertise, so they depend on the word-of-mouth produced by drive-by complimenting. When I first entered the store, I was impressed. I was looking for a pair of unusual frames. The vast selection was a bit overwhelming. The price for a set of frames seemed to be black or white. Either they would be marked $65,75 or $125,135. Well, I found a pair of frames that suited my face and I was quite taken by them. They were $125, which, at the time, I thought was quite reasonable. I purchased the frames. When I arrived home with them, I began to examine them more closely; obviously, I should have done this while in the store; I didn't. Upon my inspection, I discovered that my unusual, quirky, "vintage" frames were of such low quality that I was actually embarrassed that I had paid $125. I'm almost certain that I could find such frames for sale in a halloween costume shop or from some counterfeit store in Shanghai. They just feel incredibly cheap. I became angry when I considered the profit margin that Fabulous Fanny's must have made on my frames, which could have easily been purchased for under $10 from a bulk vendor. While this is only speculation, I imagine Fanny's profit margin is criminal. I'm returning them in the morning. read more

I had a lot of fun trying on all the unusual frames in this store on a recent trip to New York. Even though it was very crowded, the salesperson spent time helping me pick out a pair of frames I loved, and then adjusted them to fit my face. So I was pissed when 2 weeks later, back home in San Francisco, I dropped my one-of-a-kind glasses and they broke. A local repair shop said they were un-fixable, so I mailed them back to Fabulous Fanny's with a note, not expecting much. I never write reviews, but this place deserves all of my online love and gratitude, and you (who are considering shopping here, but wanted to read a few reviews first) will be glad you went to Fabulous Fanny's! By far the best optical in the world! Well, the best in my world. They have an amazing and eclectic frame selection. Definitely something for everyone! Fabulous Fanny's offered the largest selection of true vintage frames, in very good condition. They also have their own line of eyeglasses, Spectaculars, which are (as the name implies) absolutely spectacular! The frame selection and diversity is next to NONE! They have wooden, round, octagonal, 1920's, 1960's, cat eye, colorful, black and white, rhinestone (not for me though), anything you can think of! They had a pair of glasses shaped like a bicycle! Like, what?! They also have very trendy, more toned down frames if you're looking for something a little more bread and butter, but still Fabulous. Most importantly, the service was epic! (I keep wanting to say Fabulous, but they already know they're fabulous!) The opticians on staff weren't just trying to sell me something, they wanted to help me look amazing, and I could really feel that. They said "no" to frames that didn't look that great on me, which I was thankful for because it's easy to get carried away in there since they have such an incredible selection. They were very helpful, courteous and tolerant! I must have made them look at over 50 frames on me, but they never acted like they were tired of helping me (even if they were), which was great! Fabulous Fanny's is where I always go to get my sunglasses. Randolf Engineerings Gold Aviators with the gray lenses. They're heavy duty and stylish and fit my face perfectly. I usually have to stop by every year to pick up a new pair as they keep getting stolen (or lost), but it's at such a reasonable price that I keep coming back. Fabulous Fanny also has a fantastic range of unique lens frames and vintage jewelry/accessories. I've stopped by to pick up gifts as well as elements for a theme/costume party. BEST EVER. Yelp- you saved me!!! Thank you fellow Yelpers! This place- funky and fun, such a great selection of incredible eye wear (vintage, new and somewhat vintage as well). Organized in little wooden drawers by type of glasses (round frames, metal frames, etc.) So fun to open every drawer and try on tons of pairs (free reign to do this without annoying salespeople telling you to only take one at a time). Wonderful customer service, I immediately had someone helping me and he assured me which glasses looked best and also realigned them when they were off-kilter a bit. They have so many cool glasses here--geometric pattered frames, vintage clear plastic frames with little specks of glitter (look like lucite kind of). I decided on a pair that was only $95 and fairly new (told me that they were probably from early 2000s), but they look vintage and they are perfect. They have a partnership thing going on with Optical 88 in Chinatown--they encourage customers who need to get lenses filled to go there (1 hour wait, no appointment needed, free exam with lens purchase). For people like me who don't have an Iphone and don't live in NYC, their little business card with a map on the back of where Fabulous Fanny's is in relation to Optical 88 (25 minute walk, super close), is fool proof. Follow the map and fulfill all of your eye glass dreams. Great service, great selection, even better- they give you a case (which I subsequently lost during my night out in BK). The salesperson even noticed I had a red leather purse and gave me a red leather case to match! I love the details. If you need glasses and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, and want something different and fun, come here! You will NOT be dissapointed. All glasses are cheap- the most expensive ones I saw were only $150. That is NOT bad, considering that the eye exam at Optical 88 and lenses is only $80-90 (I believe the range depends on the strength of your prescription). Wonderful place! I bought a pair of frames just under 2 years ago, and they finally broke! Sounds like the start to a bad review...SYKE! I'm actually really glad they broke, because I've been looking for an excuse to justify buying another pair. The service here is impeccable! The counter person found someone to guide me through the selection as per my specification. And to my luck, that girl actually helped me find the best pair for me. I don't mean she stood idly by giving me the death stare, or that she pushed pair past pair past pair at me until I bought one and left. I mean, she listened to my critique and found an improvement on the last ones she'd offered. Once you're ready to purchase, she hands you back to the counter person who gives you the greatest gift of all. The business card to their "friends", dear 'Optical 88'. These guys deserve a review all their own, but I just want to mention, they (optical 88) examine and fit your glasses within an hour for under 100, so frames and overall preparations end up for under $200 (since Fanny's is only a shop and has no in-house ophthamologist) I've worn glasses for the past 15 years so I don't bother with name brands. I know I'll outgrow or break the pair. So fanny's is amazing if you're shopping for stylish frames at a reasonable price. Some people pedal this place as an antique frames vendor or a hipster shop, but they really have something for everyone: metal/plastic, round/horn rimmed, it's all there. Pros: Great selection of vintage frames. Open and close drawers to your heart's content and try on as much as you want. Non-pushy, friendly sales staff. Cons: I purchased multiple frames and after getting home, decided that I just did not like how one of them looked on me (different lighting at home vs. in store really made a difference in this case). They have a 30 days return policy, so 5 days after the purchase, I went to return. My frames cost on the high end and to return, I had to pay a 10% restocking fee on the whole price (including tax!). Now, the sign for the restocking fee is right there in plain view if you look up over the register, so I'm not complaining about that specifically, BUT I think it is poor business practice to charge a restocking fee on a fashion item that is virtually brand new, and include the tax in the restocking price fee!! (Does it really cost that much to wipe the frames down with alcohol?! And why would the fee be different for different frames??) Seems like they are really trying to nickel and dime here. Bottom line, if you think you might want to change your mind about your purchase, keep in mind that when you return your frames, you might lose up to $20 or less/more (depending on the cost of your frames) from your original purchase even if you return right away. So just be prepared to live with that idea once you walk out of the store with your new frames. Personally, I think it would be good business practice to at least put up the "10% restocking fee off total price, including tax" sign in at least one or two other places throughout the store and not just right at the register where you've already made the decision to buy. read more

Fabulous Fanny's really stood out to me in the sense that the staff at FF helps you find the frames that not only flatter your face, but also suite your aesthetics and the vibe you're trying to exude. Academic, artistic, biting wit - Fabulous Fanny's got the glasses for you. I've gotten frames at Moscot, Selima, and Warby Parker in the past, which have all been great experiences, however; Fabulous Fanny's offers a more unconventional selection of frames. There's a greater chance you won't spot someone else with the same frames as you, since most of their frames (save their Kala frames) are unused vintage frames. The staff at FF are incredibly patient, helpful, and are often responsible for customizing and hand dying some of frames themselves. I remember Fabulous Fanny's when they were selling frames in the 23rd street flea market; long-gone Shades Of The Village on Greenwich Avenue used to buy from them because they had such good prices. I've bought several pairs of excellent vintage frames from them--including a pair I still need to get lenses for; since they've been at this location, they've expanded into the storefront next door, where they sell vintage clothing and hats. They'll make minor adjustments to your glasses and have a great machine to heat the temple bars if they get bent out of shape--as often happens--but with really vintage frames will direct you to a "real" optician to do the work, since any work they do is "at your own risk." I came in with a pair of vintage Wayfarers someone on eBay had sold me without mentioning they had an irreparable break--not to mention an unusable left lens that had to be replaced--and FF told me about DecorMyEyes, which although nationwide, is an optical in Brooklyn that operates a repair shop that claims they can fix almost anything. (I didn't personally have a bad experience with DecorMyEyes, but since many people have and it's received national media attention, I've removed the link to it.) FF also directs people to Optical 88 on Mott Street for the best-priced lenses to go in their frames. The staff is extremely nice and helpful; this is a great store with great people. read more

I bought my black French vintage frames here about a year ago and since so many people have asked me where I got them, I figured I should write a review. Fabulous Fanny's is an amazing place. It has a large and unique collection of frames. Furthermore, they are organized in a very clear and well categorized fashion. The place is small and gets fairly crowded, so be prepared to get bumped into while you are looking through the lower drawers and wait for someone to finish a section so you can browse. The staff is super helpful. I had narrowed down my choices to about 5 very different frames and they gave me very honest opinions and brought it down to the one I now own. They can put in rhinestones (color of your choice) into many of the frames! I chose a lovely lavender shade and I love my glasses. The frames with the rhinestones put in ran me about 80 bucks and they said they would put them in again for free should the rhinestones ever fall out. Nice! I had the lenses put in at Optical 88 on Mott St, a place they recommended. My lenses here were about 80 bucks and so for less than 200 I had an awesome pair of glasses. I have had these for over a year and so for those weary about buying vintage frames because they may not last long-these are durable. The frames at Fab Fanny's are in great shape, which is especially surprising because I am a notorious man handler. This is definitely the place to go for vintage frames. read more

This place is unbeatable. After walking in to a LensCrafters for a new pair of frames and walking out trying to contain my hyperventilation at the ridiculous prices, I did what any broke artsy young professional would do: I turned to The Internet. Luckily Yelp turned up Fabulous Fanny's, and I stopped in after work. The shop was small but the number of frames they have in this place is unimaginable. The prices were much more budget-friendly, I got a pair of black Perry Ellis frames (funky but still work-professional) for only $75 and a slew of honest-yet-heartening compliments from the staff. Everyone there is super helpful and great at tie-breaking any difficult decisions! Their referral to Optical 88 was excellent--sadly since my eyes are about as bad as an 85-year-old grandma trying to read the fine print on a medication advertisement, the lenses were a little more expensive but still a great deal compared to most pricey ripoff optical places. If you're looking for unique, fun frames at an affordable price, Fabulous Fanny's should be number one on your list! read more

While I can't necessarily agree with Jess H.'s statement, "Nothing makes a girl feel more fabulous than trying on a sparkling rhinestone glasses, (Jess, don't get me wrong--- i LOVE me some bling, but rhinestone glasses really fight the already sparkling nature of this girls' iris'.)" I can agree with everyone on the fact that their selection is incredible! And by incredible, I mean the fact that you have a drawer labeled "blue glasses," or as fore-mentioned by another yelper, "christian glasses." What does that even mean?! Regardless, it does get a little crampy in there, but the urge to try on every single ridiculous pair of glasses surely outweighs any claustrophobia that may occur. I'm also a HUGE fan that they have a cheap LEGIT referral for getting your scripts in your lenses. This place rocks. Super extensive collection of vintage frames. Truthfully, much more extensive female collection than mens, but well more than I ever could have expected. Very affordable too. They only sell frames here, but they refer you to a place in Chinatown to handle the lense care. It works out amazingly. The service is real too. I hate when people at eyeglass or sunglass stores tell me that everything looks 'Fabulous' on me. Its so fake! I put on a pair of glasses and the assistant assured me that it was all wrong: too big, too narrow, the legs stick out too much, covers up too much of my eyebrows etc. Cheersy for honesty! read more

Its hard to write about this place... its harder to say why they only get three stars. I should start by saying I often get confused for an employee... It can be said with no need for modesty, that I command a sense of self confidence and knowledge (its a false command, but its there). But the lack of attention from employees is inexcusable. When you look for frames, you are shopping blind! I was trying on frames, but all I could see was a tonal blur. Finally, probably due to it being close to closing, they helped me by giving me a magnified mirror... then left me on my own. It gets more complicated to review FF, when I returned with my boyfriend to find him frames and to confirm the style I picked out. The cute blonde boy helped my beau out (probably because he is hot), but again I was mostly left to my own devices. He had a nice experience, so maybe its me! Maybe they think I should be left alone... But even without assistance, the business has some excellent choices without being too expensive. in conclusion, there is a great selection of items at Fanny's that isn't inexpensive, rather affordable. read more

This place is an experience! Fabulous Fanny's is prepared to cater to your every eyewear whim. I've been wearing glasses since the 2nd grade and like my frames to be a statement piece that complements my wardrobe, so I was thrilled to find a place with so many wonderful options. Some super eccentric frames, some super vintage, some with crazy colors and rhinestones-- I was absorbed for literally hours looking through the seemingly endless supply of vintage frames, stored in drawers labeled according to type/frame color, and eventually settled on a pair of teal blue frames with a semi cat eye. I am obsessed with them and wear them all the time. I've never gotten so many compliments on a frame! The staff were friendly, approachable and helpful-- the girl who helped me was super patient while I gave her a super vague overview of what I was looking for, and rejected most of what she picked out. The guy who checked me out also gave me a great referral for a cheap place, Optical 88 in Chinatown to get my lenses made, which meant I scored frames and custom lenses for my super nearsighted eyes for under $200. If scouring through drawers of vintage eyewear for that one perfect pair that isn't too over the top for daily life isn't your thing, I really liked their brand of eyewear, too-- "Spectaculars" I think it was called? The frames came in a variety of intriguing colors (I almost went for a magenta/purple-ish color or the orange ones) and were only $135 a pair. There's also a small vintage clothing shop connected to the part of the store where they sell the glasses, which appeared to stock some interesting and reasonably priced items. It's super packed and you will inevitably bump into people roughly once every 10 seconds in the cramped space, but it's worth it. Definitely check it out if you want cheap, unique frames! read more

I stumbled in late the other night and asked when they closed, (I hate to be the customer that keeps everyone late) and they assured me even though they would normally close in 5 minutes, I had more than enough time to look around. This is the first store I frequented when I moved to the city. I walked in and it was like, kazaam, hello greatest place on earth! The owners, Stan and Ken, are absolute dolls. I'm totally sad I never ran into Josh Hartnett there (sigh, secret crush). The frames are great, and only expect to drop some money if you're looking for vintage designer frames. The rest will run you $100 and under for awesome vintage frames, most with hand designed sparkles! The other half of this store is dedicated to clothing & accessories. There are many drawers filled with gloves, scarves, clutches, etc. and the best part is that they encourage you to try things on. Absolutely the place to go if you need new glasses. There's an absurdly large selection of frames of all varieties and price points, "vintage" and otherwise, sorted by shape and style in drawers that you can rifle through yourself. No need to point to shit behind the counter and struggle to find the "least bad" option that just-passably fits your style like you do at your optometrist's office. If you do want help though, the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Felt more like a warm group of friends in there than a salesman isolating you and pushing upsells. There's also integrity to be found in the fact that most of these are very high-quality frames for fair prices. Got myself a Korea-made pair for about $100 and the construction is solid, unlike most of the cheap garbage from China I've had in the past. No lenses or exams here, but they can refer you to a place in Chinatown that will do it for super cheap. I paid $20 for my lenses since I already had a prescription ready. read more

If it weren't for one very pretentious worker, I would have really loved this place. Upon entry, my girlfriend and I were greeted by a friendly shopgirl and shortly started perusing their great collection of frames. However, after being approached by the douchey fashionisto in question, he smarmily intimated that because of the pair of glasses I was wearing, I wouldn't find any frames that I liked in the store.
