My girlfriend and I took a trip to Boston from New York in February and stumbled upon this place in our hunt for a pre-dinner drink. Well, that pre-dinner drink turned into a few drinks and dinner itself. Great, great, great food!!! Boston is the last place I wood think to get pulled pork but their pulled pork sliders were FANTASTIC!!! Their thin crust pizzas were perfect as well! Cut to last night...we took another trip out to Boston to visit family and had to revisit! We were extremely disheartened to hear that the pulled pork sliders were no longer on the menu but the waitress asked the cooks and those delightful SOBs pulled out that pulled pork and made them just for us! This bar is located near the Freedom Trial by the State House which is perfect for anyone who needs a quick pick me up after seeing some of the amazing sights along the trail. Beers are priced average for being in a bustling downtown area, which is to be expected. The food looked great. One sign of a great place to eat is when an employee eats the food from there. Staff was perfection. They were nice, friendly, and even provided tourists like us some great tips about the city. The beer was cold and fresh. Atmosphere was clean, perhaps even a bit upscale divey with a touch of historical. The other patrons were young professionals who like to relax after work. I would definitely add this stop to my next Freedom Trial journey. read more

You have to appreciate a bar that knows what it is. The 21st is there to server you food and booze, and you are there to eat and get drunk. That's about it. That simple premise (along with it's location near the statehouse and Suffolk) is why there is a good mix of people in there. The following story was my 1st encounter with the 21st. After a full day of moving to Beacon Hill, my girlfriend and I needed food and drink. We stumbled in there around 3pm on a Saturday. At the bar, there were a hand full of people avoiding the summer heat. In the back there were a gaggle of girls ordering a dozen shots every 20 minutes or so. (Ready.....) After about the 5th round of a dozen little guys of liquid courage, two girls emerged from the back room. (Set..........) They found two guys sitting at the end of the bar and walked over to them. One girl announces to the bar that it was the other girl's 21st birthday and she has a scavenger hunt. One of the "items" on the list was "do a body shot off of a random guy." (Go!!!!!!!!) After some encouragement from the bar tender (yes the bar tender was encouraging this), one of the guys took off his shirt and laid down on the bar. Instantly, the once quite bar was swarmed by the party of girls snapping pictures. After the shot was done, the girls screamed out to the guy "What's your name so we can tag you on Facebook?" The guy responded "F*$k you!. My girl friend is not going to see those pictures." Classic. We now go there almost once a week. read more

Met up with a couple of friends here at the 21st Amendment while I was in town for Christmas/New Years. The entire time I was here, I couldn't stop thinking about Nucky Thompson from Boardwalk Empire, which is one of my new obsessions. The atmosphere in the 21st Amendment is interesting - everything looks very old including the building (it probably is). It has a pretty neat post & beam construction. There was a solid, albeit not enormous drink menu. They have a handful of good beers on tap. We were pre-gaming for the New England Aquarium, so I ordered up something a little stronger, an egg nog & bourbon drank, which was the tasty. Highly recommended. Overall, the drinks seemed very reasonably priced. The food menu was lengthy. I opted for the Portobella sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries, which is how I measure the quality of a restaurant, were very good. My sandwich was also tasty. Great little bar in Beacon Hill - definitely swing by for a reasonably priced lunch. read more

Best damn mashed potatoes ever!!! They need no gravy to be as amazing as they are. I love love LOVE this place. The bar tender Andrew is a total sweetheart, not to mention he has a great sense of humor and makes for great conversation (yeah I know that's how it's supposed to be, but he's pretty awesome). I always go here to watch football games. Get yourself beers and some sweet potato fries with chipotle aioli, and you're set! Nice crowd, comfy atmosphere, mashed potatoes, Andrew, chipotle aioli. I came here with a few friends for dinner at 10pm on a saturday night and the place was completely packed. There aren't much seating space so if you come here with dinner in mind you will probably have to wait a long time and the noise level is not very conversation friendly, also mind that the kitchen closes at 11pm. We were finally able to get a seat after about 20-25mins and ordered the nachos and buffalo chicken fingers. The nachos was massive and good to share for 3-4 people. The chicken tenders was also fresh and tender. One complaint I have with this place was their limited draught beer selection though the cocktails were pretty good. read more

First things first. Holler at those sweet potato fries!!!!!!! I swear I ate the equivalent of 3 sweet potatoes last night. That is how many gorgeous fries were strewn across my plate. I got a simple cheeseburger which was pretty good- no complaints. My friend got the buffalo chicken wrap which she enjoyed. Menu is pretty small, but the options are pretty good. They had a list of a few wines and a few beers, nothing crazy. Prices were reasonable. There's a bar area and a small dining area- lights are dim which creates a really cozy setting. It's all about the ambiance. They had music playing which at some points was really loud and at others it was just enough. I just imagine this being a perfect place to hang out on a cold, snowy winter night. Both waitresses were extremely pleasant from start to finish. They came just enough where we weren't searching for them nor were we trying to fend them off. I think I have found myself a lovely hangout spot. read more

My boyfriend lives not two minutes away, so when we didn't have any other dinner plans last night, we decided to stop in. We sat at a table, although the people at the bar looked like they were having lots of fun. The waitress was fairly attentive, although not the best I've had. The food on the other hand was definitely above average. I had the 21st burger, and it was ridiculously huge. I had to start off by eating some of the onion rings off of it before I could even think about fitting it into my mouth... My boyfriend's Caprese Chicken sandwich looked only so-so, but his sweet potato fries were incredible. The major downside I would say would have to be the price of the drinks: $5 for a beer isn't bad, but the $9 cocktail was a bit overpriced in my opinion. That being said I would definitely go back especially for the trivia/family feud type game they have on Monday nights. read more

Why five stars? ATMOSPHERE. This is a very cozy and warm place to grab drinks with coworkers at the end of the day. It's not a very big place, but I think that adds to its charm. It's dark and woodsy, which is just my kind of place. The music is usually quality. It can be too loud sometimes though. One time it got turned up so loud when they finally turned it down most of the customers joined in a round of applause (me included haha). But that stuff happens. I'm not going to dock a whole star off of a a fantastic place like this. I've gone with a group of six coworkers and sat comfortably in a booth. And I've gone on a date here and stood in the bar area the whole time because it was so crowded. Both were great experiences though! I recommend this place all the time! read more

21st Amendment has become my default before-or-after-the-movies bar when heading over to the Boston Common Loews to indulge in the latest mind-numbing blockbuster schlock. (Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love every second of it - Michael Bay is a brilliant man. But I digress.) It's a great place for large groups - the front section by the bar gets pretty packed, but I've always found tables to sit at in the back section even on weekend nights. It's the usual set of Boston beer taps with some fairly uninteresting cocktails on the menu, but bumping 21st Amendment up from 3-star mediocrity to 4-star recommendation is the scrumptious and affordable bar food. Especially recommended are the nachos with buffalo chicken. $10 gets you an enormous platter of nachos complete with meat, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. One of those and a couple rounds of Harpoon IPA make me pretty happy. The burgers are big, greasy, and well made, as are the paninis -- you're not going to find anything too adventurous here, but on Beacon Hill it's nice just to find a place where you can grab a couple drinks and some simple quality food and walk away just $20 poorer. read more

An all-around solid place. We came here for burgers after reading good reviews on Yelp, and felt we were steered well. (Cheers, Yelpers!) The burger comes piled with onion rings (among other tasty usuals), and with a large side of [sweet potato] fries. The staff was great, the ambiance great. We even got an extra plate and set of beer glasses from the beer dinner going on at the same time. Why not a 5? It simply wasn't a blow-away once-in-a-lifetime meal (the way, say, Helmand is). Buttermilk chicken sandwich with ranch was hearty and wonderful. I'm on a chicken kick right now and it hit the spot. Hardly had enough room for the pickle spear and sweet potato fries - but those were good, too! Got in before the dinner rush/happy hour on a Monday. Imagine it packs in folks for a game. We came here visiting Boston and didn't know where to eat lunch, and Yelp directed us here. Thanks to other Yelpers, we knew to get the Nachos and then we also did an order of sweet potato fries and sliders. Everything was phenomenal. The nachos were made with REAL CHEESE. It was epic. It wasn't that melty gross crap. The sliders had the full taste of a burger despite being pint size. The sweet potato fries, where do I begin? Great! The best part was that the movie "What's Your Number?" was filmed here. I LOVE that movie, so it was awesome to be a part of cinema history by eating here. read more

I think this place is amazing maybe it's because I've working across the street for over 3 years now or maybe it's because I've a ton of good memories (sometimes lack of) about this place. The entire place is sort of small, a dinning area and a standing room bar area. I wouldn't recommend this place for a sports game only due to the lack of T.V.s . However, if you're meeting up with friends and looking for a casual place to drink and talk this place is it. No dancing though :(, but you can dance if you want to people will just look at you weird. The food is pretty good and the portions are on point, even if you just get the fries they're great. The service is always friendly, a couple of times our orders have gotten mixed up but I blame the high volume of customers and not the staff. 21st is life, 21st is love. read more

Best burger I've had, maybe ever, but definitely in Boston. Every piece from the bun to the burger was so good. I not really a bun person and thought this one was divine and the burger was so juicy and cooked to perfection. All of it melt-in-your-mouth good. Small* cozy atmosphere adds to the enjoyable experience. I've also come for late night drinks on the bar side and found the smaller size made it a little congested. Sooo this used to be my bar of choice downtown. I love it. It's small, dark, cramped, possibly the only place in Beacon Hill you won't have cell reception -- and for some reason, all of those things add up to an amazing atmosphere. For happy hour, I like getting the pulled pork sliders -- they make me wish they had a pulled pork entree! delicious, and only $5 For my main course I usually get a burger or the turkey club -- love them both, but sometimes they come a bit greasier than you want. (what makes a turkey club greasy?? Bread slathered in butter and then toasted...it works...) I almost forgot the three most magical words at this place: Sweet Potato Fries! They're unreal. Get them, eat them, make sweet love to them. Other than for food, this place is great for after work drinks. Can't say much for the beer selection because I'm a creature of habbit, but I don't have any complaints! Love this place. read more

There are two types of pub renovations that have happened in some of my more favorite places - 1. alterations like at Crossroads that essentially tear out the soul of the place I knew and loved ,and replace it with something entirely different and sterile. 2. alterations like at 21st, where they just make things a little nicer, a little different, but still are an older version of what they have always been to me and yes, it's all based on me and my experiences, can't you tell :) but really, this place is essentially the same place I first got pulled to 7 years ago on one of our first dates. and while I hardly make it down here anymore, I definitely do get a nice little feeling of comfort as soon as I walk in here. and truth be told, I was never all that much of a regular here - but it says something about a place that you feel like you were, even with less-than-routine visits. read more

21st Amendment is a great establishment fashioned as the historic pub it is. Two reasons I go here: 1. The 4 mini sliders cheeseburgers are out of this world. At $9.50 they come with American cheese, caramelized onions, pickles, Russian dressing, and a stack of crispy onion rings. 2. The atmosphere at 21st Amendment is on point. Aside from the updated chairs and tables, everything feels authentic and original. I ordered the tuna melt on rye, holding the cheese (I know, I know. I am allergic to dairy). First off, the rye was fabulous. Rye either punches you with flavor or could pass as white bread, and this loaf brought the punches. Their standard tuna melt comes with tomato and bacon- not shabby. Then there were the generous and salty fries. Potatoy fries are my favorite and these were hearty as they get. A+ My boyfriend ordered the sliders and was "very happy with his order". I don't eat red meat so I did. It try the sliders but I did sample the onion rings that came with his meal and they were top notch. The batter had a nice little kick to it to crank up the flavor, and the o ions were slightly undercooked in a good way. They did not slide through the coating at all and had that al dente crunch. I'm surprised this place doesn't get better reviews! I've only been there once, for sunday night trivia, which we WON. That might be skewing my review a bit, but hey, it was a five-star experience. Besides the trivia that our team was apparently so good at, they serve a good burger (apparently John Kerry's favorite! does that mean anything to anyone in Mass. anymore?) and the BEST sweet potato fries. They are just super fried and piled on the plate and don't taste the least bit healthy. Its a positive thing. Probably even better than the burger, the best buffalo chicken sandwich i've ever had. I haven't had many of those, its true. What is it with Boston and these buffalo chicken sandwiches that are so elusive in NYC? Over here, they're as much of a bar staple as Miller Lite. Many brownie points for 21st Amendment's location on the very charming Beacon Hill. The signboard lettered in gold outside gleams invitingly on looking long enough at it. (A reminder of its very historic next-door-neighbor with its 200-year old carefully preserved gold-coated dome?) This unassuming little bar is a great place to catch up with friends or colleagues for the after-work hours. Offerings include staple American fare that pair well with liquor...things like pizza, sandwiches, greasy treats, quesadillas etc. There's a modest selection of drinks to choose from. I usually don't go in for very fruity flavors, but they had a lot of fruit cocktails on their menu, so why not, I figured. Our meal which began with a strawberry stoli and a blueberry lemonade was fleshed out by a grilled cheese with tomatoes (side of sweet potato fries) and a tuna melt with a side of regular fries. My customized strawberry stoli was sweet, slightly weak in a good way and fruity. So-so. I found the blueberry lemonade that I sampled to be decent too - not much of a contrast to my stoli. The sweet potato fries that arrived with my grilled cheese were really good, fresh, hot and crisp and chockful of flavor. The s/w itself was pretty good - a little heavy on the butter though. My friend's review of the tuna melt comprised of the phrase "it was nothing special". Overall, the food was satisfactory, not much to complain about. IMHO, what stood out were the ambience and the interiors. The place is so casual and chilled out, as reflected in the heavy noise of conversation and casual dressing styles of the patrons. Also, what really caught my eye when I entered is the small size of the place and its heavy dark-chocolate wood interiors. It wasn't too hard to find a table there in spite of all of them being occupied during the hour and a half we spent there. Also, the waitstaff were busy bees but friendly enough to take care of the patrons. Also, this is one of the few places that, although is at street level, is protected enough from the main streets and crowds, so you don't have passersby peering in while you chew on your food feeling like a museum artefact. Seriously underwhelming experience. My husband and I sat at our table for over 30 minutes without ever being greeted by waitstaff or offered menus, water or drinks. Drinks were good but slow to arrive. The food was good but overpriced once we were finally able to order. (after being there over an hour) our waitress never introduced herself or checked in on our table unless she was flagged down, which was difficult because of the tiny space and crowded atmosphere. We were never offered water or other drinks at all. I'm not sure why this place is so highly rated but I know we won't be back. read more

I've always liked this place for the quick dinner or drink that I've grabbed before class. It's a standout in that it's on the Hill and has retained it's decent prices and sometimes loud atmosphere. The food is pretty good. I'd take the food here over Beantown anyday. Suffolk students: Be careful thinking you can have just "one more" and make your 7:30 class just fine. Primarily I should give some love to George, the trivia emcee, who is generally awesome. Get here before 7:30 if you want a place to sit, or at the very least a place to write. As has been mentioned, it gets packed. The nachos and fries are great. The chicken quesedilla was pretty yummy, too. The onion rings are a little crumbly. Unfortunately the waitstaff is a little slow, so if you're ordering food and beer at a high-top table or in the back, try to do everything at once so you're not waiting an hour for the beer and then another hour for the food. I was attending the 21st Amendment as several members of the League were in town. I walk in after getting ID'd, and almost immediately some donkey and his girly ask if I have any coke. Not somewhere that I would ever consider spending an entire night, given how small it is and the fact that I don't think the normal crowd could sustain my interest. But I've gotta say, when it comes to bar food, theirs is probably some of the best I've had in Boston, and very reasonably priced. Simply put, the sliders at the 21st are the best I've ever had. The buns are soft not stale, the burgers are cooked to perfection, and the combination of the sauteed onions, cheese, and russian dressing literally melts in your mouth. The side of onion strings that they come with are also fantastic. And while nothing can rival the sheer amazingness of the sliders, I've also found their quesadillas and nachos to be very good. I'm not sure that any experience can quite match four hours of shitfaced karaoke at the Hong Kong, the drunken stumble up the road to Beacon Hill, and then finally the reward of sliders at the 21st. This is by far my favorite amendment. Whenever I eat or drink here, I feel like I am back in some hidden pub buried in the heart of London. It's dark and cozy with low ceilings and a fire on cold nights. The bar side is often very crowded and noisy, especially right after work when people stop in for some grub and grog before heading home. Being a small space, that might be an intimidating welcome for some people. The more intimate area for eating is a bit quieter but it still radiates a fun, pubby atmosphere. We love the nachos which are so huge they can feed three or four people easily. (They will substitute guacamole for meat if you are a vegetarian.) These nachos are covered with lots of spicy peppers, cheese and sour cream and arrive looking like Mount Vesuvius about to erupt. Family loves the sliders, the fries and the sandwiches. Service has always been prompt and efficient. It won't set you back a week's pay check. It will fill you up and make you all warm and cozy inside. When I need a bit of comfort, this doorway always lures me in. read more
