I haven't had any food here, so I feel like I can't judge the full experience. What I CAN judge, however, is how packed it gets here on a Friday night. Man, it's just wall to wall people, some of whom looked a little worse for the wear before midnight when I rolled up in here a month or so ago. Luckily, I'm an expert at negotiations and scored a table for 8 people in about five minutes, so at least we didn't have to stand! Service was spotty while we were there; it took about 25 minutes to get a pitcher of beer after it was ordered. I do like that they have decent beers in pitchers; I hate when places give you the option of Bud or Bud Light - I'd rather set myself on fire, thanks. Come hungry for the 21st BURGER! It is delicious and huge. My medium burger was cooked perfectly. But how can you go wrong when you add smoked bacon, swiss cheese, and finely cut onion rings on top? I recommend the yummy sweet potato fries, but my cousin got a HEAPING portion of broccoli on the side. This place does not skimp on food. A couple of the other tables around us ordered monstrous portions of nachos. Looked good and I'll definitely be back to try those. Best burger I've had, maybe ever, but definitely in Boston. Every piece from the bun to the burger was so good. I not really a bun person and thought this one was divine and the burger was so juicy and cooked to perfection. All of it melt-in-your-mouth good. Small* cozy atmosphere adds to the enjoyable experience. I've also come for late night drinks on the bar side and found the smaller size made it a little congested. To take advantage of the spring-is-on-the-way weather, we took a long walk downtown this weekend and landed at 21st Amendment, a bar that I've known about for years, but just never quite got to. It's on Beacon Hill, but more convenient to get to than you'd think. We grabbed 2 stools in the bar area, and were surprised to have a waitress come over to us. She was very attentive, which was unexpected because it was so crowded (that it was crowded was in itself a surprise, since it was 7PM on a Sunday). We just had two beers, but considering how much of a tourist attraction this is, I was pleased to find out they were just $5 each. I'd like to go back and try the food sometime. The atmosphere was really pleasant - It has a totally unpretentious vibe. This seems like the kind of place where it's all about the crowd - I can imagine it being a great place to watch some big important game, where everyone would be high fiving and chatting with one another. read more

Ha Pretty good name for a divey type bar that you may have found during prohibition. Beer is cheap at 3 dollars for some of the tallboys, and a beer of the month. Food is very good with large portions. I had the tuscan chicken sandwich, good mix of ingredients with tons of great steak fries. One of my buddies had the pulled pork girlled cheese that looked good. Waitresses and owners were friendly and attentive even on a busy day. The only reason that this place doesnt get 5 stars is its a little too small and dark for my tastes, but hey to each his own I guess. read more

Great bar.. Dark wood and minimal lighting. According to the bartender - who was a doll - this was a prohibition bar back in the day. After a long day on the Freedom Trail, we stopped in here for a drink.. Ended up having several drinks and chatted up the bartender for a few hours. Cozy, comfortable environment--nice neighborhood bar. Solid beer selection and the fries are good. It gets super painfully crowded on the weekends (people just standing around talking, there's no dancing or anything), but it's good for after-work drinks, especially in the winter. It takes forever to flag down the bartenders on Fridays/Saturdays. There's standing room by the bar (with some high-top tables), then a separate dining area with tables (that seem to be hard to snag!). read more

Even after 2.5 years of working on Beacon Hill and going there for almost every business lunch and after-work drink, I'm still not sick of it. Good attentive bartenders, good blend of local Boston charm to keep it real and prissy rich clients to keep the standards high, and all the classic pub food is golden: Buffalo wings, burgers and great seasoned fries are high up on my list, and not an unreasonable price on the menu in my opinion. Good prices on brews too, though you have to jostle for space during the after-work crowd and shout to be heard. Also great for spotting government movers and shakers, if you're the sort of person who's prone to recognize Deval Patrick's wife or the State Senate President. read more

My wife and I were visiting Boston from New York, and we stopped here for a relaxing lunch in the middle of a hot day. The environment is a wonderful New England style tavern. The food was very, very good, and the beer selection was great as well. The service was also outstanding, and we had one of the most friendly waitresses I've ever had the pleasure of being served by, yet she was not overwhelming at all. Love this place! Half price appetizers between 3 and 6 (I think--definitely ends at 6)! Came here for the first time and had the mini-burgers. For $5 we got four decently sized mini-burgers and an enormous mound of onion rings. Burgers were incredibly tasty. Onion rings are hand battered and fried to order. The single order was pretty filling. We each had one of their $3 beers. I don't think we have ever paid so little for good food and beer. The vibe: a reliable neighborhood pub with friendly service. The atmosphere at 21st Amendment is on point. Aside from the updated chairs and tables, everything feels authentic and original. I ordered the tuna melt on rye, holding the cheese (I know, I know. I am allergic to dairy). First off, the rye was fabulous. Rye either punches you with flavor or could pass as white bread, and this loaf brought the punches. Their standard tuna melt comes with tomato and bacon- not shabby. Then there were the generous and salty fries. Potatoy fries are my favorite and these were hearty as they get. A+ My boyfriend ordered the sliders and was "very happy with his order". I don't eat red meat so I did. It try the sliders but I did sample the onion rings that came with his meal and they were top notch. The batter had a nice little kick to it to crank up the flavor, and the o ions were slightly undercooked in a good way. They did not slide through the coating at all and had that al dente crunch. I lived in Boston this last summer for an internship and spent quite a bit of time at 21st Amendment. I had a great time every time I was there-- it's a great neighborhood bar with great food. The service is good and people are among the friendliest I met in Boston. I was in Boston alone, and ate at 21st Amendment by myself all the time. The bartenders are all really nice, and didn't make me feel awkward for dining alone. This led me to return 8-10 times over the 2 months I was in town. As for the food- the 21st Burger is to die for! I really enjoyed the onion rings. I also recommend the sweet potato fries. They are delicious. There are great beers on tap too! Bottom Line: mediocre service, great atmosphere, average prices (owned by the same folks who own the Paramount on Charles St) The atmosphere is rustic -- this place feels like a trip back in time to an old New England pub. That part is great! This part is not: I had a beer here and cut my lip on a chipped glass -- I drank it anyway and told the barmaid about it -- she did not throw the glass away however...so be careful and inspect your glass! Prior to 21st Amendment, I've had no experience/expectations when it comes to Irish pubs. What I've learned from a Friday, 9 p.m. jaunt to 21st: - Everyone's drunk and belligerent, but it's entertaining. Everyone's also screaming, but the words are likely indistinguishable and Irish step dancing may occur. - The inattentive, flaky service is unpleasantly unsurprising if you're not buying copious amounts of alcohol. Imagineer that. - The menu offers a pleasantly surprising goat cheese salad with vinaigrette, candied nuts and dried berries in addition to the expected, traditional fare. - The dimly lit, dive-y atmosphere, in contrast with the hum of boozy festivity, downplays the noisy chaos without morphing the whole scene into a dark, cave-like setting. - Watch out for the suspiciously delicious sweet potato fries. Come in to feed one addiction, leave with another. You've been warned. read more

I'm pretty impressed with 21st Amendment. We arrived here late, just before the kitchen closed, with a group of 14, were immediately seated, and soon thereafter had drinks in our hands, drinks in our livers, and food on the table. That is, except for me. Somewhat-understandably, my burger got lost in the sea of orders, and my increasingly-empty stomach was beginning to not get along as well as one might hope with an increasing amount of beer. Somewhat miffed, I flagged the waitress down, but it was hard to stay angry when I saw the horrified expression cross her face. The aforementioned beer probably helped too. Kitchen re-opened, burger shortly arrived, and taken off the bill. A service touchdown. Service was really where the 21st amendment shined. Both of the waitresses we had were exceedingly friendly the whole night (if, maybe, a little handsy. As attractive women with a group of single guys, they knew how to squeeze out tips). We never had to wait for the next round, and they were good about breaking out the check along the complicated lines we drew through it. The food itself was fine, not the best I've ever had, but perhaps better than average. That could be my It's-10-o'clock-and-I-haven't-eaten stomach talking, but the burger definitely satisfied. Most of my cohort raved about the sweet potato fries, but yams aren't really my thing, so I passed them up. The regular fries were pretty solid, though. Not too floppy, and not too starchy. Drinks were good, although some were a bit silly. The "Speakeasy" cocktail turned out to be a plain gin and tonic, not really the showing I expect from a bar that names itself after the repeal of prohibition. Pitchers, though, were definitely appreciated. There aren't enough places in Boston that cater to communal drinking, and it's rare I'm not up for a pitcher between friends. It's too bad I live on the other side of the river, or I'd definitely be here much more frequently. As is, it was a perfect place to end up after a movie across the Common. read more

Wandered in on a Sunday with some out of town friends just in time to start trivia. Thumbs up to the guy that runs it because this was HARD. Our team, Crab Rash, came in about 17th. If this bar didn't have some wacky sandwiches, I wouldn't necessarily be all that excited about it. It's not that there's anything wrong with the 21st Amendment - there isn't - I just didn't find anything about it particularly distinct, WITH the exception of the grilled cheese and bacon sandwich. That was pretty damn heavenly. Aside from that, it's a pretty standard pub food location with a slightly more upscale atmosphere. It's not particularly large, and like most bars that cater to the younger-ish audience, when they turn on the music, they turn it on too loud to hear a damn thing. I went with a date here once, and we pretty much couldn't have any conversation because of the standard top-40, hip-hop/RnB selection blasting through my face. It did give me ample opportunity, though, to rock aforementioned grilled cheese and bacon, and ogle my date. The decor of the place is pretty cool - lots of paneled wood, old building, etc., and the beer selection is solid and I had no complaints with the service. Probably the most distinct thing about the place, though, is that you can get liver-destroyingly drunk and still manage to stagger across the street and vomit on the state house. If you like making political statements with your drunken debauchery, that alone is worth the trip. read more

My friend and I decided to have an impromptu pub crawl on a freaking Tuesday afternoon...I know, we sound like drunks but seriously, it was completely random and not part of our normal repertoire. ANYWAYS, on our staggering mission to check out new places neither of us had ever visited before, I found 21st amendment, Walked into a complete sausage fest (score!). I remember thinking "jesus is this where all the men in Boston have been hiding out after work??" But as I sipped on my absolut ruby and soda, I become accustomed to the continuous inflow of men walking through the door every 5 minutes. In fact, it became almost comical that besides the 2 lovely bartenders, myself and my friend, and the 4 other women in the entire place, every other body inside was a male! But let me say, that everyone I talked to was extremely polite and very nice. No greaseballs to be seen. Good drinks, nice scenery, I hear the food is good too. I'll DEF be back soooooon! read more

This was the meeting place for a Drink and Hunt event, and my group got there early so we could eat a bit before the event and the drinking started. :-) The bartender was great- friendly, helpful, right on top of our orders, and that didn't stop as the bar filled up and got crazy busy (it was nearly empty when we arrived). My friends were thrilled with the beer selections, and I thoroughly enjoyed my blueberry lemonade. Most of us ordered the southwestern turkey club, which was soooooooo good (def going to go back for that!). And a pleasant suprise was the fries- I usually don't care for fries, so I aske what the other sides were... Pretty standard- sweet potato fries, cole slaw, veggies, onion rings- and then she said: "parmesian and truffle fries". Um, yes please! SO GOOD! As I said, I rarely eat or like fries, and these were amazing!!! The building itself was great- very historical, and reminded you of what taverns in the revolutionary times might have resembled. I can't put my finger on it, but for some reason I love this place. It's a small dark bar nestled in the shadow of the State House....after work it's crowded and the bartenders themselves aren't that great- at least in my experience they're pretty slow to take orders and aren't the friendliest. However, once you do get that drink and begin to take in the conovs around you, the 21st transforms. It draws such an interesting mix of people- the suited up politicians, the slighty disheveled would be politicians, the old men from Charlestown (and I do mean ANCIENT- as in their family came over on the mayflower and they could have actually been with them) all gunning for a spot at the bar. You can also find the ladies looking to be the next Mrs Romney, a pretty entertaining show to watch. Wow! An unexpected surprise in the Commons! Went here with a TON of people, and they accommodated us. We took up a LOT of the dining room, totally consumed one waitress' time for 3 1/2 hours on a Celtics playoff night - and the service was impeccable -and prompt. Went here on a date the other day and I would have to say it is one of my favorite spots Downtown. Food was absolutely delicious (I got a pesto sandwich I believe) and the beers were appropriately priced. I would have to say that this place is probably better in the summer because they windows that they keep open which adds to the vibe there. I was unaware that they had drink specials at the bar (didn't want to show my thrifty roots to a girl who I had never talked to sober) so I just went for a Sam Adams summer as a dependable favorite. Would definitely come here again for a date and would recommend it to anyone out there as it is convenient to get to and very solid. read more

21st Amendment gets five stars for a few reasons. 1. They show that just because a place is old (and that building is OLD) it can still be clean. 2. Whale's Tail on draft. That's an epic WIN. 3. The burgers were fantastic, especially by 21st burger topped with caramelized onions, apple smoked bacon and onion rings. Even the sauteed green beans (didn't feel like fries) were on the money. I can't believe it took me 41 years to visit the 21st Amendment. I think it has now become our go-to spot for dinner after events at the Athenaum. read more

I have been coming here for about 6 years now, as I work down the street. I used to just go with coworkers for after drink beers and nachos, but lately I have gone several times for lunch. (There are not a ton of healthier options on the menu. I pregnant now and can guilt-free have a burger for lunch!) I have always liked this place, but I needed to say that the burger and fries here are amazing. The burger is juicy, has a nice sesame bun, good tomato, onion slice, and lettuce, and comes with a refreshing pickle. The fries are perfect. Nice and hot, crunchy on the outside, very soft and fluffy in the inside, bigger steak-fry type fries, and are seasoned with salt nicely. I have also enjoyed their quesadillas. Back when I was drinking, I enjoyed the beer. Very cozy, pub atmosphere. I enjoy the fake, but warm fireplace. read more

Classic pub feel atop Beacon Hill. Went in with fairly high expectations for great cocktails given the significance of the name above the doors, and we were met with not only exceptional drinks, but delicious food and friendly service. We took the bartenders recommendations for other spots in the North End based on our terrific experience here.
