My sister, dad, and I were in Newport for the day shortly before summers end. We had been walking around for hours and grew quite an appetite for lunch and possibly/definitely a libation. We were by the harbor when 22B caught our attention. It looked very busy and we knew chances were going to be not great for sitting outside but we asked the host anyway. He let us know it would be over a half hour wait to sit outside, but we could go in right away if we decided upon indoor seating which is what we chose to do. We were ecstatic to be able to grab a seat here. I loved everything about it, right away. The staff was professional, the environment was fun, we got seated at a corner table with a beautiful view, and the menu was decorated with so many options that it was hard to choose. Of course, because we are family members each of us ordered something within one of the other's top three choices. I ordered the quinoa salad and added salmon, my father opted for the special that day which was a salmon wrap with beer battered onion rings that he added, my sister went for the turkey avocado sandwich and a side salad. We all enjoyed our meals immensely and we picked off of each other's. I can say that each meal was exceptional. We also ordered some cocktails. I had the pineapple infused vodka martini, my sister order the Paloma (light on the grapefruit, of course) and my father ordered a Chardonnay because he's classy AF. Our drinks were beyond! So delicious and A+ for presentation, all the way around. My sisters turkey and avocado sandwich had the most delicious sprouted grain bread and everything tasted so fresh, my dad's beer battered onion rings were to die for and I definitely recommend ordering those. My quinoa salad was delicious and they were definitely not skimpy on the amount of salmon that they so generously decorated my plate with. Altogether our bill was about $100 which wasn't too shabby for how delicious our meals were. Our server was great, the service from the entire staff was excellent and professional. There were bathrooms upstairs and only one stall downstairs. We waited in line for a little bit downstairs before somebody kindly told us that there were more options on the top floor. Newport Restaurant group has done it again. We went to 22 Bowens last Saturday. It was the first real nice day of the year and so Newport only made sense. We waited for our table at the bar, where I had a delicious grapefruit/vodka cocktail and the hubby had the house whiskey. For dinner, we split the greens salad, 45 day aged rib eye with the cognac sauce and mashed potatoes. The green salad was very good and had lots of dressing. The steak was amazing; Very tender and juicy. The sauce was a nice addition. The mashed potatoes were ok. The ambience was pretty much what you would get at the Waterman Grille and the Boathouse. The most important things are excellent - service, taste of the food and atmosphere. My family came for brunch on a Saturday morning and it was lovely. The only frustrating part of the experience was that the food took a considerable amount of time to arrive at our table from the kitchen and when it did the sauces for the Eggs Benedict omelet and the Steak Bowl were not included which required an even longer wait. This place was everything I had hoped for. Right on the wharf and with a really cool marina vibe. We had an 8pm seating and ended up on the wharf with floor to ceiling windows to see the wharf and the ships. Our waiter was informative and entertaining. He really made the evening special and explained the courses so we'd appreciate what they were. I had the scallops. I'm really re-thinking seafood on the west coast now. This is a great steakhouse in Newport. It reminds me of a local version of The Capital Grille -even down to the pineapple martini. Everything you order is a la carte - from appetizers to entrees to sides. So it can be a bit pricey - the food warrants it though. The calamari is excellent - the fry it nice and crispy, toss it with some hot peppers, and serve with lemon. It's super yummy. The steak is always prepared to my specifications - medium rare, Pittsburgh style. It's juicy, tender, and flavorful. I usually order asparagus and mashed potatoes with it. The truffle mac & cheese is one of my favorites from any restaurant! The only reason I have to deduct a star is they are a bit ageist. When I go with my parents (both when I was in High School and when I visit now - 10 years later), we would be given a great table. When I go with a friend, dressed up to celebrate (even now), I get crammed in next to the wait station, without fail. It makes no difference if you have a reservation or walk in. In short, excellent food...but if you're a younger crowd and want to celebrate a special occasion - go to another restaurant to be treated equally. read more

We managed to get a table for 7 at 9pm on opentable a few hours earlier. Prior to coming in, I read about the restaurant pretty extensively and made sure I knew what most people recommended. My friend wanted me to note that they had chocolate covered mints at the door. Those were great. We were seated immediately upon arrival and the waitress introduced herself right away. Again, Newport pace, not so great for New Yorkers. She took a while to ask for our drink ordered and similarly took her time to bring them again. It was fine, though, because the drinks were fantastic and made up for it. We got a bottle of champagne, several rounds of the 22 Dole, and glasses of wine. Everything was great. Again, it felt like forever until they finally took down our food orders. We got the calamari (best one we've had all weekend) and the shrimp artichoke fritters (thank you, fellow yelpers, for the recommendation. It really is a must!!) to start. For the sides, we then got some mac & cheese, some asparagus, baked potatoes and brussel sprouts. Again, everything was great. For the entree, I got the prime rib bucatini carbonara. Went very well with the champagne. It was a little too sauce-y for my liking, but it was tasty nonetheless. My boyfriend got the steak and lobster tips. He loooved it, and so did my other friends who got the same. A few of then also got the NY strip and seemed to have loved that, as well. This was a great decision overall. Came for lunch and we ordered the bag of donuts (lobster and shrimp fritters), lobster roll, the salmon BLT, a painkiller cocktail and a coffee. All were fantastic, especially the fritters. The portions are not huge but the food is delicious with a great attention to detail and we did not leave hungry. And that coffee I mentioned is locally roasted and prepared at the table in French press. Never would have expected seafood restaurant coffee to be so good. We were married in Newport, RI 17 years ago and took our 13 and 15 yr olds back to see it this summer. Only on and out for the day so wanted someplace special and a bit romantic for the big meal. 22 Bowen was perfect. The seafood sampler starter was fresh and sweet, tuna was perfectly cooked, kids loved the burgers by the lobster roll was the show stopper. We were here in time for restaurant week and got a ton of great food for a great price. We had their clam chowder which was really good and the carbonara which was delicious! Most disappointing experience in Newport. It took almost an hour for our main courses to arrive after we finished our starters. Strike 1. Halibut was ordered as medium rare but was delivered dry and hard. Strike 2. Waiter immediately knew what was wrong when we called him over, and offered to get us a new one. But, he charged us for the second halibut! Strike 3. The breadroll of the Steak & Cheese sandwich was extremely hard and impossible to eat. Strike 4. Manager came and apologized for all the mishaps and we didn't have to pay for the fish. Manager's handling was only positive of the evening. Avoid. Went there at 755pm for an 8pm reservation. They took our name, told us to step to the side and then seated the white couple after us at the best seat outside (we had an outside reservation as well). Then seated us upstairs in a covered outdoor area in the corner with no view. It was the busiest section where the waitress was clearly overworked and managing a bridal dinner of 15 people in a private room (in addition to the 6 full tables outside). 25 minutes went by and she never asked us if we wanted a drink. Went downstairs to switch to a less busy table. Once we sat down, the white waiter asked IF a hostess actually seated us here (implying we just sat down without checking in with anyone - who would do that?). The best dish I had in Newport. Veal so tender and flavor, polenta underneath so creamy, with some veggies to balance flavors. What a perfect plate! Scallops - Brother said they were tasty. Took the opportunity during restaurant week to visit 22 Bowen - very easily made the reservation 2 weeks early on open table and got prime seating with a great view of the wharf. I ordered the crab spinach and artichoke fritters - these were amazing. Then continue with the swordfish BLT and pumpkin pie. Everything was to die for! My fiance ordered the steak tip sandwich - he wasn't able to eat the bread because it was oddly very stiff but the steak was delicious and tender. He started with the clam chowder - this was ok. We ordered cavatelli for a shared app and two different style filets for our entrees and every single bite was perfectly cooked, seasoned and just delicious. The food here is great, unfortunately the steak my wife ordered didn't work out. First it came out too salty, our server insisted to have one remade. The second one came out way too rare, it seemed like they rushed it. Had them remake the same one a third time and it was the same. Our server and the manager were very apologetic and did everything they could to resolve things. Steak issue aside the rest of the dinner was great, portions were massive and I couldn't finish my entree nor my side. We had one night to enjoy Newport so we searched for a great steakhouse with good reviews and 22 Bowen's seemed like a great choice. It's on the pier with amazing ambience. We sat next to the water with sail boats close enough that we could touch them. It's a beautiful setting, 5 easy stars. The prices are definitely high but we were excited to have an amazing meal. For the most part the quality did not disappoint. Two of us ordered the New York strip and two of us ordered the filet. The strips came out great as did the special order Mac and cheese and the augratin potato's. The filets were ordered medium well, (I know, it's sinful, but that's how they like it. Granted, it's hard to get a 3" thick fillet to a perfect medium well so we were understanding when they came out over done. They took their time getting the replacements out, which is also understandable. Sadly those were both barely medium rare. The true reason for the low stars is the response, or lack thereof, from management. When it was discovered that the steaks were not great they had them redone. Then it was obvious they were still not cooked right. Two people had finished their steaks before the other two came back out and then the steaks still weren't right. A full 1/3rd of one was left on the plate in the end because it was too rare. And yet no offer of compensation or even an apology. We spent nearly $300 for 4 people and this was not an excellent experience. The setting is perfect, the ambience is on point, but I would not go back because for the money we felt they severely let us down. read more

It came out without the tapenade, and the waiter took it back only to come back with the fish topped with ice-cold tapenade. Temperature difference ruined the fish. Green goddess salad was wilty and gross. Wine list is solid, though they'd run out of some bottles. The margarita is $32, served up (rather than on the rocks). My husband and I dined at 22 Bowen as guests of Castle Hill Inn for our anniversary. We let the hostess know we had a voucher for dinner that was a part of a package we got from the Inn and she seated us. I do not think she relayed this information to our server. The restaurant was moderately busy, but not slammed. There were several tables open with a relaxed atmosphere. Our server could not have cared less that we were there. Not sure if it was because we did not look like the typical guest, or if it was just his MO. We ordered calamari and oysters for appetizers and lemon for my water. Neither the lemon, nor the calamari arrived until well after the bread was brought out, which was a bit of a wait. The oysters never arrived. Oh, and we had to remind our waiter of our drink order. We ordered a steak, Cesar salad, loaded baked potato and asparagus. I guess I should have known that this restaurant was family style, but it was never explained to us, so I didn't. The salad arrived warm. A warm Cesar salad with a warm, pungent anchovy. Guh. I couldn't make myself eat it. The baked potato was the size of a football and loaded with a dollop of sour cream and I cheese- but, for its size was in now way "loaded". Perhaps if our waiter returned to check on us I could have asked for additional topping, but alas, we were on our own save a water from another table occasionally making jokes with us. My husband reported the steak was fine, but not great. Let me note my husband is VERY easy to please. The experience was such a bummer we decided to just get out of there and asked the friendly waiter whom had been joking with us if he wouldn't mind asker our waiter for the check, and could he remind him to take off the oysters since we never got them. Our waiter arrived nonplussed and asked if we wanted dessert. We replied no, we were full and just wanted to get the check. We then handed him the Inn and holy smokes did he change his tune. All of a sudden he cared very much about our experience and needs, and brought over a "complimentary" dessert, which he had said we didn't want. We asked him again for the check and he told us it was all set. (The voucher covered $150, but we knew we exceeded it). We explained we wanted to leave a tip, and he again gushed that we were all set. We we left he followed us out letting us know he hopes we will return. A lot too little, too late. We had read good reviews and had friend who said they really enjoyed it. Unfortunately this was opposite of our experience and we were SO disappointed. This was a special event and we were treated as if we were an imposition until they knew we were Inn guests (the Inn is an affiliate). On top of it the food served to us was.... meh. I'd say, if you're looking for incredible food and service, try the Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn instead. read more

We had dinner for my wife's birthday, party of four. I made the reservation through open table, and asked for a table upstairs on the glass with the water views. I made a separate trip to Bowens early in the afternoon when they opened for the dinner service at 500pm. I met the manager David and the new host Costa, asked them to make sure we were seated at the table we requested, and tipped them accordingly. They smiled and said no problem. When we checked in we were taken upstairs but not to the window table we had wanted but to one on the peripheral of the venue. We asked the waiter if we could move to the closer table and were told no, this table was reserved for another party. I said, I think its for our group and was told it was not. The waiter sat us and immediately asked about entrees! I had to ask to get drinks, and appetizers. we ordered scallops and calamari to start. When we did get our appetizers the order was not correct and had to go back. They gave us the scallops and we waited fifteen minutes for the calamari. We were then informed of the specials and were told it was a plate of four shrimp, only one special. When they brought the calamari, ten minutes after we finished the scallops, dirty plates still on our table, we asked again about specials and were told, "Oh yes there is a Del Monica Steak as well!'. Our entree orders were not taken until fifteen minutes after we finished the calamari, the dirty plates sat uncollected. As we waited one of our guest, unbeknownst to me, went to speak with the manager and told David of our concern over the lack of service, holding the table and being told we do not hold tables on a busy night at 700PM, yet clearly they held a table for another party after our arrival. (Our reservation was at 645 and we were there at 630) The manager said we do not hold tables and was neither accepting of the error or apologetic! Yet he was happy to accept my tips. If the policy is to not hold tables, don't take my money! After the entrees were served we were asked about dessert and were told it was on the house, at this point my wife was bit disgusted with the whole event and just wanted to leave. The food, when served, was very good, quality and quantity and presentation. The service needs to be improved, communication enhanced and training of policy to hold tables clarified. We understand during this time the lack of unqualified staff, all restaurants struggle for qualified staff. The manager needs to be a leader and show by example how to handle issues, especially for a very special event. This one took no responsibility and said they did nothing wrong. We won't be back, too many other choices, with better attention to important and meaningful events! I have to update this review! David just called and profusely apologized for the misstep with our table seating, reservations and food service. He has gone above and beyond. I had a reservation for tonight and still ended up having to wait 45 minutes for them sit us. They forgot both a drink and dish; we had to remind them we ordered a drink and it took another 20 minutes for them to bring it out, the dish they had to cook all together so I ate a steak without my side. For a 500 dollar bill for 4 dishes, the least we could have expected was solid service, waiting aside. I figured because of how badly it went they would offer to comp some of the bill and afterwards when they hadn't, I was too embarrassed to even ask. I don't write reviews but felt I had to in this case. I'd give them zero stars if possible. For a "steakhouse" with premium prices, you might as well hit the local pub to get better service. read more
