Looks like I'm not the first one to have this experience. I had 4 fillings done here. 24 months later, I go in for a cleaning and they tell me all 4 fillings have to be redone. Initially they told me they would cover the cost of the work and when I showed up the day of they refused. This practice seems to be more interested in making money than quality of their work. This is a super disappointing review to write, but I'm having dental work redone that was done there 21 months ago. That alone is annoying enough, but having to fight for my dental records - especially in this situation - is not okay. Unethical business, I walked out paying an extra $840 out of pocket. I needed to have two onlay procedures done, my co-pay was $200 for each onlay, so $400 total. I had the first one done in Nov 2019, and paid the first $200. I came back to have the second one done in Jan 2020 (just yesterday). After the second onlay procedure completion, the receptionist proceeded to tell me that I owed them $1,040, which is an extra $840 more than the expected and agreed $200 for the second onlay. The extra $840 came about for the following reason: 1) $250 for a cosmetic lab material upgrade that the dentist decided to do WITHOUT informing me of the extra cost; 2) the insurance only covered part of the treatment for both onlay procedures, so I needed to pay the remaining amount. The first was just outrageous. The second, they could have and should have informed me when I checked in and was waiting for the second procedure. They already knew that the insurance only covered part of the first one! Really don't know what all the ZocDoc reviews were about but clearly I would not have picked this place had I done my Yelp reviews in the first place. A very frustrating and disappointing experience. Went to this place for the first time because they had great reviews. After my cleaning, I was told I needed a cleaning and removal of plaque, had 3 cavities, needed a crown restoration, and Visa-Line which came out to $6,695. They tried to get me to do everything right away which was very strange. I work in sales so I know they were trying to work the urgency game. I was very sketched out and thought it was ridiculous so I requested X-rays to email to my other dentist who I was with since a child. My old dentist told me from the Xrays I only had one cavity.....No wonder why the receptionist Megan was so pushy with me to do everything so fast. What a shame! I don't know anyone who likes the dentist. And to be honest, I don't like the dentist either. But 286 Madison is the exception and makes an otherwise unpleasant experience pleasant. The staff and doctors (both) are professional and kind. They're very helpful and work well with your insurance so there aren't many surprises when the bill comes. This is the first dentist I would recommend for anyone who wants to be treated well and honestly. read more

Dr. Kaufman was really friendly, seemed very competent, and had great bedside manner. He made me feel very comfortable during a consultation for some receding gums--confident enough to schedule an appointment for a gum graft right away (the new kind that uses synthetic material rather than taking skin from elsewhere in your mouth). However, one of the receptionists is an asshole. I woke up on the morning of my scheduled procedure feeling nauseous and ill, and called to cancel. I knew that cancelling last minute often incurs some type of charge at dentists, and so I was prepared to pay a fee. But rather than just ask me to pay a fee, she straight up said that because it was so late notice, "I can't cancel this appointment. You need to come in." She continued to pressure me to "take a pill or something" or "get over it", really trying to make it sound like I was under some sort of obligation to get the procedure done that day. I was kind of flabbergasted. She even tried to get the dentist to write me a prescription for my nausea so I could pick it up, take it, and make my way over to the dentist. I told her that even if I agreed to doing that, there would be no way I'd make my appointment in time. Plus I'm pretty sure that'd be malpractice. I literally had to tell her "you can't make me come to this appointment, you know". I was then transferred to a more reasonable receptionist who told me I could just pay a cancellation fee of $75. I know some doctors offices will waive the cancellation fee for first time patients, so I wasn't exactly thrilled, but I considered $75 to not be the worst thing in the world because I was cancelling a fairly expensive procedure day of, and I also just wanted to be done with it. The whole interaction now has me questioning whether I want to go forward with the procedure at this office, and I'm definitely questioning the estimate she gave me. I'll have to make a call to my insurance. If i knew the name of the woman I talked to I'd note it here, but I don't. read more

While the dentist and hygienist seem nice and knowledgeable, this office's staff is horrendous. After my first appointment with them, they said I need a deep cleaning which costs abut $200 and which was not gonna be covered by my insurance, according to one of the receptionists. The same receptionist "encouraged" me very eagerly that I should book the next appointment for the deep cleaning right at that moment despite the fact that I said I was not sure when I can make it. She conveniently did not inform me of the cancellation fee policy that I need to reschedule 48 hours in advance to avoid being charged $75. They also sent messages asking me to confirm the appointment and throughout those messages there was no mentioning of the fee whatsoever, until it's already passed the 48 hour mark. It seems like a scam to get money no matter whether they receive business from customers or not. When I complained about this, she said I completed a form online before my first appointment and when she sent the form back to me via email I saw there was a very tiny line about the cancellation fee policy buried within a form filled with other information about matters completely unrelated to this. Customers should not have to dig deep into forms filled with information of miniature size fonts in order to know of how much they will be charged for a cancellation. They also should be informed of this policy when they make additional appointments. And whatever forms they signed that contain information about their payment or potential responsibility to pay, they need to be given that form to keep. And communications via text and phone should be clear that customers know of the potential charges they need to pay. read more

Best experience at a dentist office yet. I gave up my "prominent" dentist (who if I ever saw again I'd probably punch him in his face) to go to this office based on Yelp reviews. All the receptionists are fantastic, upbeat ladies with smiles and personality, Dr. Kaufman was positive, honest yet soft-spoken about what needed to be done as I had developed periodontal gum disease. He did an awesome job with the deep cleaning. And as for Dr. Kimon, he did a fantastic job shaving down some teeth and giving me a veneer on a front tooth I had broken; made them look symmetrical and color matches perfectly :) As for pricing - I'll be honest, I paid cash, they cut me a couple discounts and did the work very well, in timely fashion; they run their office smoothly and quickly getting to clients and getting the work done "Properly". As for my prior "award winning" prior dentist, he would have given me the scientific evolution speech, showed me a bunch of song and dance imagery and light show about what needs to be done then charge me double what Madison Dental charged. I don't write reviews; I think majority of dentists are rip-offs who love to overcharge you, so for me to write this should tell you - I had a great experience here with everyone, the fair pricing and the quality of work. Very happy I took a leap of faith and went to this dentistry practice. Plus, the receptionists are cool and actually have personalities.. makes you feel comfortable from the get go. Very bad experience with the hygienist and the administration of the office. I liked my dentist a lot, so this is unfortunate. Hygienist was very rough, missed whole sections on certain rounds, and did not leave my teeth feeling any cleaner (I've been to many hygienists and have never had an experience like this). The administration was miserable -- I had called my insurance in advance to find out which procedures would be covered and how much I should pay. I was overcharged, which took weeks to refund after playing a ton a phone tag with insurance and the dental office (the billing person seems incredibly slow -- the business needs teach other people how to do this task). Had to launch an investigation by my insurance in addition to being overcharged because I was charged for a procedure I shouldn't have been charged for at all, which took a very long time and a lot of chasing on my part. They must be overcharging patients right and left. read more

The one star rating is for admin only. Dr Kimon is wonderful and I would highly recommend him for his professionalism, above and beyond care and excellent bedside manner. If only their admin staff could match his professionalism. For months I have been in contact with their office regarding an incorrect charge on our family account. I've spoken to three different front desk employees who continued to reassure me they were handling the matter, but would then drop the ball and never follow up. I have spent far too much time reaching out to follow up and inquire about the continued bills that I was assured "would be taken care of". When I called again today after months of receiving bills I spoke to Nataya who was belittling and unkind. After politely informing her of this frustrating situation she kept repeating their billing protocols to me. I understand their billing protocols. I work as a practice manager and have plenty of experience with billing. I do not deserve to be spoken to in such a condescending manner. The fact that the admin staff is so wildly incapable of handling an incorrect charge is baffling to me. They have lost 2 patients today. If a manager reads this I would hope you'd provide more trainings for your staff so that they are more capable, both in billing and in customer service. read more

Had bone graft done with Dr Kaufman in 2015. Great dentist and equipments, procedure was well done.

I was quite anxious and fearful about having 3 wisdom teeth extracted but Dr. Schmuly assured me I would be ok and not to worry. Well he was correct! I couldn't believe the procedure was as quick and painless as it was and no need to fill the prescription for pain meds. I had the procedure done at 5p and later on in the evening I took 2 ibubrophin and that's it. I have had friends and coworkers that have had painful experiences with extractions so I was a bit nervous going in but my procedure was a breeze! I don't know what Dr. Schmuly does that their dentists don't do but they need to check him out at 286 Madison Dental! read more

Good dentists, inflexible service hours, has very strict appointments times, when called to inform of being late for appt was told that I need to inform of 24 hours in advance which was not a day of business operations. Also they charge fees if you cancel same day. Dr is very intrusive asks personal questions beyond necessary. Makes you feel pressured to make decisions on the spot about dental procedures before you can process medical necessity. Only make an appt here if you can afford taking lots of time off from your job to adhere to strict appointment schedule and have unlimited funds to pay absorbent fees. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Shmuley since I was 12 years old (and I'm now 30).There is a no better dentist out there. The hygienist Nishu is delicate with her cleanings and willing to answer any questions. Dr. Shmuley shows a genuine interest in my well-being, and makes an otherwise unpleasant experience great. There is no dentist as friendly or professional as he is. Cindy, the coordinator, is willing to work with your family to ensure that you can afford your dental needs and get the work you need done. She helps you navigate the insurance process as well as helping you fund your dental plan. When I had my cavities filled a few years ago, the process was painless and due to their technology and methods, you can't even tell that I have had any fillings! I'm so happy to have found 286 Madison Dental! I first found the practice as I needed some periodontal work done with Dr. Kaufman. Dr. Kaufman was very experienced, knowledgeable and warm. I was also very lucky in that he referred me to Dr. Kimon for dentistry within the practice. Unfortunately I needed a lot of work done (replacing old cavities, crowns, etc) and Dr. Kimon did all he could to make the process the least stress possible. Not only is he incredibly talented and innovative, he also truly cares about his patients and takes the time to explain things thoroughly. He is very detailed and is always willing to go that extra mile. For example, I was experiencing some tooth sensitivity a couple of months ago and Dr. Kimon even took the time to follow up and make sure I was doing okay. Not only is he calm, patient and caring, I'm always confident and trust that I've received the best care possible upon leaving his office! In addition, I started my own business a couple of years ago which as anyone who starts a biz can attest to, it can be really stressful securing good dental insurance. Given I'm self-employed, the team really worked with me to ensure that I received the best dental care at fair rates which I'm also very appreciative of. Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Shmuley are great at what they do. Dr. Shmuley filled in a cavity for me and it went very smoothly. It was my first experience in the office and Shmuley was welcoming, genuine and professional. He was quick, but unhurried. Dr. Kaufman removed my wisdom teeth (top 2, I had no bottom). Getting your wisdom teeth out is typically quite the ordeal, as I've seen with friends and family members. The use of anesthesia incapacitates the patient and leaves them groggy and inept afterwards. Dr. Kaufman opted not to use the anesthesia on me and removed my teeth while I was awake. The area had been numbed thoroughly so I didnt feel any pain. In 30 mins I was out of the office and since the front desk was so accomodating in scheduling my appointment at the end of my work day I only missed an hour of work. I was back in work the next morning, on time, feeling fine. 286 Madison Dental is the best! read more

They asked if I was a first time patient, and once they found out I was, everyone from the doctors to the dental assistants to the front desk staff pushed to get unnecessary treatments ASAP (deep cleaning, cavities, etc.) that was estimated to be thousands of dollars. They used fear mongering and stated if I do not get these done, I will develop severe gum disease and will risk having my teeth fall out. I got a second opinion and none of what they pushed for was true. I know people in dental business consulting and the exact types of treatments they pushed for are ones that are expensive enough to improve profits but not damaging to the teeth if conducted. I'm not a lawyer but maybe someone else can opine if this practice counts as insurance fraud? read more

First visit with my son on weekend! Bonus! Both given ipads instead of paperwork to fill out. Friendly receptionists that explain payments and so forth very well. Hygienist was friendly and took her time and also examined and explained any issues she saw. Dentist Kauffman then took over and explained what was urgently needed ( i knew this before) . I was pleased i wasn't told a cock and bull story that my mouth was in dire need of repair to fill the dentists pockets. Dr. Kaufman is quite simply one of the most professional individuals I've ever interacted with. I visited him this week for a through cleaning after he explained to me that there was some infection I was dealing with. He explained to me the causes, the concerns, and the proper care required to rectify the situation; he left no part out. I had a weird reaction to the numbing shots and briefly became ill as a result, but he remained calm, collected, and took immediate action to help me relax and stabilize. I was ready to go home after, but he explained to me exactly what happened and reassured me that everything was just fine. I hadn't had dental insurance for years & when I got it, I only just used it to repair a problem that would randomly occur . I give 286 Madison Dental 2 stars because they do do a good job. That said they are super expensive. They are high pressure to get procedures done. I am still paying off the one gum surgery I did have there. They want me to get the same surgery on another tooth that isn't nearly as bad. They also want me to come every three months for a cleaning. When the cleanings are $170 I can't come that frequently. I have never had x-rays at 286 Madison because I was told they cost $325. I don't have dental insurance. It is economically prohibitive. I will not be returning. read more

I heard about Dr. Alexander Kimon through a friend who recommended him highly. She had told me he is very humble and polite and that he takes the time to explain each step of the process/procedure as he performs it. From the minute I set foot in the office, his office staff was super friendly and helpful, the office was very clean and well-maintained. And after just a few short minutes with Dr. Kimon, I realize that my friend was absolutely right. He was extremely nice and really did take the time to not only explain everything that he was doing, but also to make sure that I was comfortable during the entire visit. One thing I would like to note: most dentists look to make money off of you, that's obvious--it's business... But I was extremely impressed that he wasn't looking to make money on an unnecessary procedure. When I told Dr. Kimon about a previous dentist's suggestion to perform a certain procedure, he suggested against it instead of trying to perform the procedure just to make money. BE AWARE OF OVER CHARGE and DISHONEST ESTIMATE I first contacted this practice when I needed an implant. The estimate I got from this office was jaw dropping -- almost $10,000 for one implant (including all possible procedures). I have implants already which were done with all the possible procedures in their quote. I also shopped around with a few estimates (including all possible procedures) from different dental offices in the city- neither these quotes nor actual fee paid for the implants I have were even close to 50% of their price tag. This office seemed very eager to get my business and followed up a few times to tell me they were willing to match the price from other dentists. I eventually chose this office considering they matched the price and their location is the closet to work as implants require more than one visit. Wondering why they think they can quote customer a rip-off price to start with. After the implant is completed, I was suggested to get a night guard based on some symptoms. At that time, their staff checked my insurance and told me I was responsible for 20% of the fee and my insurance covers 80%. I paid the 20% and got the night guard and thought I was done. Months later a bill arrived stating I still owe over $300 on this night guard. Surprised by this, I contacted the office and was told that my insurance does not cover night guard. This is contradictory to what I was told at the time of getting the night guard. I questioned why I was given false information. The answer was, of course, not their responsibility -- I was actually ready for that kind of answer, but still amazed by how many reasons the staff came up with to clear themselves one by one -- 1. office -- when we checked your insurance, your insurance does not list the exceptions for conditions when night guard is not covered. me -- I called insurance and was told dental office should see full information about any coverage. In fact, I also contacted my general dentist on this after receiving my bill (but did not tell her about the bill). My general dentist told me a few minutes after checking my insurance that it was not covered at all. And her price tag is almost 50% of what I am being charged by 286 Madison Dental. So one dental office gets different insurance coverage info from your office? If I knew back then the high price, I would've not got it at this office. 2. office -- we print out a written copy of the insurance coverage info at the time you wanted to get the night guard. The fine prints on it should state that the quote is an estimate only. me -- No, I was not given any piece of paper at that time. How do you explain an estimate is 80% higher than it should be? 3. Office - we only provide estimate as a complimentary service. Me - so a complimentary service can be of no quality and include false information that is ok to be passed to the customer? The lady I spoke to is called Lea (not sure about spelling and believe she is the billing manager). She was very rude on the phone and cut me off on every sentence. When I questioned why the fee charged by 286 Madison Dental is more than the allowed amount by insurance. Her answer was the insurance is wrong and told me she would contact my insurance and then conference me to confirm the charge. Two weeks passed and I heard nothing. I actually just want to pay the correct amount and get it done, so I went there to resolve it as well as have a few questions about night guard answered. When Lea came to speak to me, she told me that she called insurance and left messages, but no reply from insurance. I asked why she didn't follow up. Of still course she stated she did. Really? If so, you didn't even care to follow up with me and let me know the status? I was quite upset by all the denials and lies, so I told her I would just pay the over charged amount and done with the office. Even worse, everyone at the front desk (3 women) started to attack me when I was making the payment, stating I was rude and Lea is very sweet who would never be rude to me. Were any of you even hear our phone conversation? One woman would not stop until a customer came in (there was no other customers at waiting area when I was attacked). Then this woman told me to shut up. Now they care about their image... I told her I am gone FOR GOOD. The night guard costs over $400! If you don't know what coverage is provided by insurance, you should decline to provide any estimate to your customers. If you did make a mistake informing the customer incorrect information, at least make an attempt to admit. A sincere apology worth everything to keep a customer and possibility of bringing future clients. If your fee does not match what's allowed by insurance, don't lie to the customer - make an effort to clear it. You are in service industry - words of mouth is the best way to increase your revenue and keep your reputation. Do you really need a customer to teach you this? read more
