    Lamb with rice
    Tyler L.

Unlike the little street carts you find all over Manhattan, this one is actually a food truck that is parked on the corner of 28th Street and Madison Avenue all day. As a result, it is much better quality. The lamb is actually cut from a spit like in restaurants and tastes fresher and is juicy - not dry and old like carts that store their meat in coolers. The rice and veggies are also more freshly prepared. And, the chicken or lamb with rice is still only $5. Also, as a bonus, the guy here usually gives you french fries and a falafel ball when you get a platter. This is easily the best halal food in this neighborhood.

In the evenings this truck can be found on 6th ave near the Fairway Market . I stopped in and got a combo platter with rice ($6) . It was delicious and was on the heavier side . By that I mean , they don't skimp on the meats. I got chucks of tasty chicken and lamb. I will say this is one of the better food trucks in the area .

#I got the combo over salad (no rice) because I didn't want the carbs. But it did come with a lot of fries. Fortunately, the fries were really good. So I ate #carbs. The #chicken is a little bland, but the #lamb is good.

There are several Halal stands in the area, all pretty similar but this spot stands out to me as my go to. The chicken and lamb always well seasoned and not overly greasy. You get a hefty portion of rice, veggies, and usually get fries and a falafel thrown in. The veggies are fresh, and have a nice marinade on them. Overall find the quality of food a cut above the rest in this area.

    Chicken over rice $8

Been grabbing lunch here since returning to the office. They raised their prices to $8 for a chicken over rice, but it's still the best value around. Quick and generous portions.

While the untrained eye might see all of the endless Halal Stands in New York City as being indifferent from one another, know that the particular stand on 28th and Madison is a good one, with good quality eats at reasonable prices. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? When it comes to a food stand, there's not much more you can ask for besides expedited service and a friendly face, and you get both of those things at this location. My buddy lives not far away and is a local of sorts, and the two of us are always met with a friendly face and a question as to whether or not we want the usual. From there, food is out the window in under five. What more could you want? Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? We're not talking McDonald's cheap here, but know that the Halal Stand is above that level of quality anyway. For $7 I got a sizable portion of mixed chicken and lamb with rice, and while that's only a few dollars away from say a Chipotle Burrito, it was also 0230 in the morning. These prices are fair. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Good. Very good, actually. The meats are fresh and of high quality, with good flavor across the board. The rice is cooked to perfection and flavorful in it's own right, and the sauces bring everything together in a way that reminded me of late night kebabs, which is very much a good thing. My one gripe would be that the veggies were a little bit on the weak side with just boring ole lettuce and some other chopped veg, but that's a small issue in the grand scheme of things. Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? I love simplistic affordability, and that's exactly what this halal stand is. I'd gladly come daily. Star Granted.

A coworker introduced me to this halal stand one day for lunch and needless to say I've been pretty much hooked ever since. You can debate the merits of cart food or even notice the variations that come with each trip here: will I get fries this time, will they include a falafel, am I getting lettuce with no tomato/olive/pickle/jalapeno/pepper medley, are they gonna be heavy handed with the white sauce or hot sauce? Regardless, this is one of the better if not best halal carts around NYC, drunk or sober. For a $5 lunch, I can't argue too much with the quantity or quality of the food and you'd be hard pressed to find better bang for your buck around this area. It's not a well oiled production line like 53rd and 6th, but it's worth any 3-5 person wait (5-10 min) and there's even a retaining wall to sit on if you want to bask in your experience. If you're a cart food enthusiast or just looking to sample, it's worth a taste and I highly recommend the lamb.

This is the kind of food that tastes "just O.K" when you're sober, but can have a heavenly taste after a few drinks. There are a few bars nearby, which might explain the places' success. The gyros, in my humble opinion, have the best taste out of any order there. And it is great that you can get full with like $6dollars. So all in all great value. Try them after visiting any bar that's in the neighborhood.

My friend had heard about this place pretty often as he works around here. We decided to get some food from here after a night of drinking at a bar nearby. There was no line at the time and the guy working there was really friendly. We ordered the combo over rice and I also bought a can of V8 after showing delight that they even sold it at the cart. We took the platter to go and ate it in the comfort of our apartment. I liked that they gave fries along with the platter, which I've never seen before. They were pretty good and a nice pleasant unexpected surprise. The chicken and lamb was good, but I really liked the rice here for some reason. I'd definitely recommend this cart if you're in the area.

BUT, imho Adel's doesn't really taste as good as the original Halal Guys in terms of flavor and fragrance. The chicken from Adel's is in bigger chunks and some argue is more tender, but the flavor is definitely not close. Also, it's important that it comes with lettuce, tomatoes and a little onion to balance everything out. Finally, You must get both the spicy red and white sauce together to make it all come together! The Ugly: The smell is addictive, so if you walk by, it's hard to resist, even if you've just eaten a nice meal somewhere else. We couldn't resist. Gotta hit the gym hard for the next few days!

And that line is no joke. You will wait. Plan accordingly. Here's my dilemma: every single time I eat here, my stomach lets me know about it later. Without fail. I've tried adjusting the hot sauce, going easy on portions... doesn't matter. Something about this food and my digestive system just don't agree. At this point I have to accept that it's probably not for me. So why do I keep coming back? Because at 2 AM after a late night, when everything else is closed and you're starving in Times Square, that platter of chicken and rice over white sauce smells like salvation. They're the only game in town at that hour, and honestly, in the moment, it hits. It's the next morning I regret it. If your stomach handles it better than mine, you'll probably love it. The food is tasty and the portions are huge for the price. I just wish I could enjoy it without paying for it twice.

Half the spots nearby had already shut down or had lines I wasn't about to stand in, and this truck was right there, lit up and moving fast. Got the two-meat combo over rice. The guys inside don't waste time. I had my plate in a few minutes even with a couple people ahead of me. Chicken and beef both came out hot, and the rice underneath was fresh and fluffy. Ask for the extra spicy red if you want to suffer a little. Portions are big for the price. I walked away full and happy. Fries are the one thing I'd skip (they go soft quick), but with the meat and sauces all over the plate I didn't care. If you're out late and everything else is closed, this is the move. They open at 7:30 and stay open well into the night, which is exactly when you want them. I'll be back the next time I'm wandering around starving after midnight.

I feel like this place is good, but the white sauce is what makes it. Would I wait another 50 minutes in line, again? Heck to the no - but 1 time? Yes, just to say I tried it. I came in line around 9:45pm and waited approx. 50 minutes before being served. the line just grows and grows.... it is crazy busy! I don't get the line concept here. Because while I was in a long line, when I get to the front, there's another line to the left of the truck... and people seem to be getting their food faster, and the line is like 2x shorter. So that's kind of confusing. Ambience in line and ordering = chaotic. The line is quick in terms of when it is your turn, KNOW what you want. Because you have like 5 seconds to order and that's it. I ordered the special (the spicy rice, lamb and chicken combo, extra white sauce, 3 squirts of hot sauce, and a topped with fries). $13 in total. I would like to say, advice to folks to know what you want before you come. I did not look at menu options beforehand and I did fairly little research so I honestly did not know what to order, just looked at some google reviews and pictures. That is going to help you, in case you do not want the typical lamb and chicken combo. To the food - 1st - they don't care how much hot sauce you want. they're making these bowls in the masses and are just giving you a single squirt so they can make 20 bowls all at the same time. I was hoping for more spice in what I ordered, but it was very slightly spicy. I'm not sure if they let you serve yourself to more, but I'd definitely want more of the hot sauce. 2nd - I didn't taste any spice in the spicy rice. I'm not sure if, again, due to the fast production that it all just taste like regular rice? but didn't see what the hype was there. 3rd - I genuinely think the white sauce is what brings it all together. The chicken was OK to me. I didn't think it was anything special, and would give it a 3 out of 5. texture was OK, flavor was OK... the lamb definitely stole the show. The lamb was absolutely flavorful and full of delicious spices. This reminded me of what I've had in Dubai. Very rich in flavor and just the perfect amount of spices. Overall, I think if you wait for your food to cool down like 20 minutes, you'll get to taste the flavors more. Everything hot together, for me, just didn't allow me to really absorb all the food. But the rice was your average rice. Pita was deliciously soft and pillowy which complemented the white sauce. Chicken was ok. had an OK texture; nothing life changing. lamb was fantastic, and fries were just fries (nothing memorable). For a NYC experience, a 1-time, 50 minute wait is acceptable. And, for $13, that's pretty cheap for the amount of food you get. I would eat it again if the line was 5 minutes. Otherwise, I'm positive you will find similar food/better food elsewhere.
