This is the best cart I know of in NYC. It is 8 blocks from my office, and I pass 6 other carts on my way to this one every Wednesday (I'm in the office twice a week). I've tried all those carts exactly once; one and done as they say. I always get the combo (gyro (beef & lamb mix) and chicken) with rice and salad, and it is always superb. He occasionally has a brown rice that is spicy, so always ask if he has it if spice is your thing, and you might get lucky! To continue my summer of halal, this is the third halal spot near work that I've hit up so far. It's better than Rafiqi's and probably ties with Habibi. I got the chicken over rice with extra white sauce and a little hot sauce. It's $6 for a platter - no soda. The chicken is really tender and flavorful and little red seasoned bits of potato (?) and caramelized onions mixed in with the meat helps add flavor. The hot sauce was very spicy and came in a kinda heavy handed squirt even when I asked for a little, so beware if you're not good with spicy. When I first moved to NYC I had an obsession with food carts. So diverse in their offerings (cupcakes, tacos, noodles..) but nothing compared to the wonderous Halal cart. For five bucks, all over the city patrons receive piles of savory rice, lettuce, falafel, and shwarma in under 60 seconds. Now, despite my intense love for this meal my patronage waned and I stopped going to halal carts. Call it snobbery, call it healthfulness but I just stopped craving it. I'd pass by and struggle through moments of "maybe I can have a second lunch" and my feet would keep going on. Today, I returned to the man who started it all. At a colleagues suggestion, we walked the few short blocks over to the "World's Best Falafel" cart and after perusing the short menu of combo items I went with the chicken kabob plate that came with yellow rice (buttery, addictive), savory chopped chicken (drool), lettuce (I'm a carnivore, I fed this to the rabbits), one falafel (good but the last bit was crunchy in a buggy way...ick), and french fries (odd addition but I don't ever dis a fried potato). All in all, I struggled to not pour the entire thing into my mouth in one fell swoop. I think there are two Halal carts that occupy this space. I've been here a few times and I've seen a gray cart in the afternoon and a yellow cart at night. I've tried food from both and both are pretty good. The gray cart is a dollar cheaper. Yellow cart = $6 and grey cart = $5, for chicken and rice. Standard Halal fare with your choice of brown or yellow rice. I chose yellow. Good amount of flavoring and its served pretty fresh. Serving size is medium. Its not a ton of food like Halal guys, but its enough for one sitting. I think the thing that separates this cart from the rest of them, is that this cart serves fries and sometimes a falafel with your platter. I'm not so sure I'm a fan of fries with chicken and rice. My friend had heard about this place pretty often as he works around here. We decided to get some food from here after a night of drinking at a bar nearby. There was no line at the time and the guy working there was really friendly. We ordered the combo over rice and I also bought a can of V8 after showing delight that they even sold it at the cart. We took the platter to go and ate it in the comfort of our apartment. I liked that they gave fries along with the platter, which I've never seen before. The more I eat here, the more I love it and observe that the city's taxi drivers pull over here for the food... Good sign- the food is just spectacular and a dollar cheaper than most of its competitors. This is a top quality Halal stand, and oh my I just cannot keep my mind off of the chicken and rice. Wow. I expected a pretty good lamb and rice and got a damn good lamb over rice. While it is not the 53rd and 6th, it is probably my 2nd best halal cart/truck ive had in the city. I went to the yellow truck. For $5 I got a salad (mostly onion, lettuce), rice, some french fries (unexpectedly a winner), and your lamb over rice. The lamb was fresh and excellently seasoned. Juicy, tender, my mouth had a flavor explosion. The white sauce complimented everything well - I would suggest overdoing it actually. Then you can mix it into your rice (which, i have to admit, was fairly bland) and get a nice flavor combination. The red sauce is also pretty decent, adding some heat to your very flavorful meat. I wish i got more fries. With the squirts of sauce they absorbed the flavor in a way i hadnt thought of and were actually a pretty good pairing with the lamb. But today I tried the 28th and Madison truck (after reading the Yelp reviews) and I was not disappointed! Cheap, fresh, and delicious! I recommend the yellow rice and lots of white sauce. NOT EVEN ONE can compare to whats the food cart at 28th and madison brings to the table. I'm indian and we have re-named this food cart, "PFC" which stands for "punjabi food cart." Even though they dont sell any indian or punjabi food... what they did was sell AMAZING halal foods w/ a punjabi flavor or style... if you like indian food, you'll LOVE this... and if you LOVE indian food... well then god have mercy on your soul.... you may never eat anywhere else ever again. The amount of food that you receive for the amount of money you pay is phenomenal!! I'm sure you've had "chicken and rice" before.. its exactly what it sounds like... chicken... over rice... throw some hot sauce and white sauce on there and you got a delicious meal. The difference at PFC is... not only do you get delicious chicken (or lamb) or rice, topped with white and hot sauce... but you also get french fries, pita, lettuce, tomato, and even a stray fallafel or two... AMAZING. All this for $5... you CANT BEAT THAT. After walking by this food truck for months, I finally got around to trying it. Had a combination chicken/lamb on rice and was generally satisfied, although it didn't differ significantly from most other halal carts/trucks in the city. You have a choice in different types of rice, though it seems that most people default to yellow rice, which is a little fluffier than the basmati rice that you normally encounter. In short, this is a pretty standard halal cart experience in terms of food quality and selection. But for $5 you get a generous portion of food, choice in rice, and the friendliest food truck service you'll probably find in New York. read more

They give you a nice amount for the price. I've gotten the lamb gyro on one visit and the lamb over rice for another. The lamb was fine, with the dish over rice you can choose white, brown, or yellow (fragrant) rice. You have your choice of sauce I say both white and red (hot) and I asked for extra hot because I am a chilihead and it didn't disappoint. They cram a salad with a pickle slice and a few small french fries in with the lamb & rice. You can't beat this for $5/$6. The gyro is 4$ and is great as well. You can easily spend $10-$20 and up on lunch in the Flatiron, so this is cheap eating without resorting to fast food chain places like Taco Bell, Micky D's, or Subway. That being said, it's FATTENING stuff, even if you leave out the rice. So it's protein bars/shakes for me for awhile and this as a Friday treat or something... My pants are too tight!! read more

Since starting my new job in this neighborhood this guy is my go-to lunch. I keep trying to walk further afield, but then I get a whiff of street meat and it's all over. $5 gets you chicken over excellent rice (I like the "spicy" brown rice personally) with a little iceberg salad, a falafel ball, and some gratuitous french fries included. OK, I haven't eaten at every Halal truck in NYC (and would like to meet someone that has) but this is my favorite. Few things can match my disappointment to see them not at a corner late one evening when I had my $5 in my hand for the last 30 minutes. I would like to say that I can tell which truck is better, the yellow one or the white one, but I have had high experiences with both. I think it is more a function of the freshness of the food and, especially, the size of my hunger. The white truck does have the far easier-to-read menu but after one or two visits you know what you want! At $4 for a falafel, or $5 for the salad, it may be the world's best value for food deal. I can hand over a $5 bill and get a Coke and falafel in 90 seconds to eat in Madison Square Park. The salad (as the extra buck tells you) is more food. My meat-eating wife feels equally passionate about the meat choices. It is an embarassingly big part of NYC for me. read more
