I visited three hardware stores looking for a piece for my faucet and the second one directed me…read morehere. They were very helpful and found what I needed immediately. Now, from a pricing standpoint, I don't think there are many bargains. When I got home I checked the price of the item I bought. It was $33 at the store and I found it advertised as low as $16 online. The same part on the manufacturer's site is $24. However, if you consider shipping costs and convenience and the fact that I didn't know what I needed, I can justify the higher cost. Plus there is a lot of overhead owning a store in Manhattan and I want to keep places like this in business. So you may pay more, but the service and convenience are worth it, in my opinion.

No prices marked on any merchandise - when you get to the register, prices are sometimes 50%-200% more than what you'd pay at Home Depot. I think they jack up the prices because contractors mostly shop here. When I went in to purchase a 25 ft garden hose (the ones that you can get on Amazon for $17, or Home depot sells them for $20), they wanted $40! The person behind the register just shrugged when I said I can get it for half price online. A Dremel drill kit cost $80 - the same one could be had at Home Depot or Amazon for $56. I wouldn't shop here unless it's absolutely necessary.

The employees are very helpful. I much prefer to visit this small business than the big box stores.

I bought a corded hammer drill here for pickup, and the next morning, less than a day later, it…read morestarted smoking while I was using it normally. When I brought it back and explained what happened, the manager, Yvette, plugged it in, ran it for a few seconds with nothing attached, told me it was "fine" and treated me like I was making it up. A drill motor running with no load won't catch an issue that only appears under load, and a brand new drill that smokes is a serious fire hazard. It was completely negligent of Yvette to tell me to continue using the drill and not accept it as a defective return. This creates both a liability issue for the store and a safety issue for me. I raised these concerns and she was dismissive the whole time. I ended up leaving, calling Ace's customer service line and getting them on a three-way call with the store. The phone rep was great and easy to deal with. Yvette only agreed to take the drill back because I'd ordered it online through Ace for pickup, which meant the rep could force the return. Otherwise I doubt she'd have budged. She gave the rep attitude too. After she hung up, the rep apologized to me for how rude Yvette had been. I went back to the store and the return went through, but even when completing the return, the cashier was openly cold. I asked how her day was going, and she just said "fine," flat and unfriendly, without looking at me. Because of this experience, this location has lost my business. I won't buy from a hardware store that doesn't seem to take seriously the safety of the tools it sells or how it treats customers who flag a problem. I've still got the invoice, the return receipt, and Ace customer support case number if the owner wants to look into it.

I've known the owners of this mom and pop shop (or pop and son) over 30 years. By name…read more I came specifically to buy VOC FREE paint because I get very sick from chemicals and for a long time (plus I've had lung cancer twice and don't need that in my lungs anyway). My landlord picked up the pain and even called Schames to double check it was VOC free because it wasn't labeled as such and they said YES IT IS. Paint goes up on my wall and within a very short time I start getting sick. I question the person painting asking if they are sure it's VOC free because I'm having a reaction and he tells me that yes they called Schames to check and were told it is. I called Schames and question them again because I am having a reaction I only have to paint that is not VOC free and after talking to two people am told that it is not in fact VOC free (which I had obviously figured out getting sick from it) and they confirmed my landlord called to check and was given incorrect information and advised to leave my apartment for an hour. I had to vacate my apartment, and not for just an hour, and was then so sick I couldn't get work done either. It was too late. So sick and this will probably last 2 weeks (or maybe more bc I don't know how long the VOC's hang around and off gas). I asked for a VOC free replacement of the paint and met resistance. One because VOC free isn't optimal for bathrooms and I don't know why else but anything other than apologizing for how sick I am and saying yes of course we will replace it with what you asked for in the first place was the wrong answer. So I just got MAD and was firm about not having to pay to replace the paint with the product I asked for (and my landlord doubled checked was what I asked for). The one (pop) then asks me how I know I'm allergic to VOCs. Now we're questioning ME and if I have a real allergy or sensitivity instead of addressing the issue that I asked for VOC free paint and was misdled about getting VOC free paint (even if unintentionally - and yes, giving them more of the benefit of the doubt they gave me re my allergy). Wonder finally says replace it this one time (like they're doing me a favor correcting their own mistake that made me really sick) then as I try to continue to answer the question of how I know it's the VOCs that make me sick (which I shouldn't have - I shouldn't have to explain myself or my needs because I should have gotten what I asked for no matter why I need it) owner says to me "TELL YOUR COMPLAINTS AT THE BAR, NOT HERE"!!!! How dare you speak to me like that!! Mom and pop shops are constantly complaining about big conglomerates taking their business away. Well this pop and son shop took me away from their business themselves. Absolutely would never buy even a nail here again. Ever. Livid!!
