We arrived at this location about 7 PM. Very quiet excellent and friendly bartender. Very well kept our area with wooden paneling and a cozy feeling. It seems to be an extremely popular location. By the time we were leaving about 9:30 PM it was starting to get very packed. Popular with a college crowd certainly. Not sure if they have food or not we came there after eating already so didn't even inquire. Definitely a place to attend. It also looks like they have another location across the street on the second floor. That place also was jampacked. I would explore if you have an opportunity. read more

Graduated Umass recently and used to love this bar until I frequently saw the bouncers physically abusing customers. Watched one bouncer shove a guy out on the street and push him to the ground, guy was not being aggressive whatsoever. Owner also owns Stackers, which is light years better and never seen staff abuse anyone there. Mcmurphy's is just disappointing now read more

Who doesn't love going to McMurphs on a wednesday for some classic Guitar Dudes??? Unfortunately I will not be giving McMurphy's anymore of my business and I hope my friends do the same. My boyfriend ordered a bud light last night and asked for some free popcorn, as it was sitting right there. The bartender literally only had to open the beer, no physical or mental work at all. The beer was $4.50 or something like that and when he didn't tip *gasp, a college student not tipping for a Bud Light?!!?!?!?*, the bartender goes "so you aren't going to tip? you can leave then" and then he was escorted out of the bar and told not to come back. Are you serious???? How about just taking away the popcorn? There was absolutely no need to kick him out. Apparently the bartender said that he called her a p****, even though the people near them at the bar said that didn't happen. Its Stacker's world, you're just living in it. read more

If you want to go to a traditional college bar without the fear of accidentally having sex with a 16 year old (I'm looking at you Monkey bar) McMurphs is where its at. It is the ultimate "what you see is what you get" bar. Its going to be packed tightly on most nights, and its going to be loud and skew young. The moan and dove it is not. However, if this is what you are looking for, the drinks are cheap and strong and the tap list could be worse (Theres a few good beers on tap, not all Bud lights like the Pub). Great bartenders who really take an interest in getting to know you. Ownership is fantastic, really are about their customers and providing an exceptional experience. Yes, this bar does get crowded. It's a college bar. One of the few in the town. Yes, the bar does have a younger crowd. Drinks are made well, music selection determined by the jukebox/crowd. read more

I am a 22 years old from New Hampshire and they refuse to let me in because there blackbox is out of date and will not let anyone in from New Hampshire with the new out of state ID. This is a great place to go if you're a big fan of being a sardine. Do you like being a sardine? If you do, then you're in luck. If not, you will sweat a lot while waiting for a beer. That being said, there isn't much in terms of actual room: it's a UMass bar. It will fill up with UMass students, and then you will be unable to move. For the purpose it serves, it's not as asshatty as Monkey Bar, but it's got nothing on less insane places like ABC or Seven-Os. read more

Graduated from UMass in '04 and was always here on Wed. night for Guitar Dudes. It really hasn't changed much except for a fancier ID checker...now I know why I go to classier, less crowded bars. Yes, the drinks are good and cheap and the music is bumpin' but that's about the only good things I have to say about this place. If you are over the age of 25, do not go here; it's a college bar through and through. My main complaint goes out to the douche bartender (short fellow who thinks he has big lats even though he's just fat) who threw our group out a mere 4 minutes after selling us more drinks (mind you the lights were still down/music still on/no mention of last call whatsoever). Whenever I went there as an undergrad, the lights came on at 12:45am and they announced last call; apparently that's not the case when most students are home for the summer. So after buying 3 drinks at 12:56am, having 2 sips of it, the lights came on, music off and the bouncers were telling everyone to get out. Really McMurphs? Get real. Glad I paid with my Amex because the charge is already under dispute and I won't be paying it. Needless to say, I'll never be back. read more

GO FOR: loud music, packed to the brim with people, GRAPEFUL DEADS (best drink intown), guitar dudes on wednesdays, otherwise steer clear of this place. you wont hear your friends talk, you will probably get drinks spilt on you and struggle for drinks or even make your way through the door. if you have a large group and go early enough to grab a table this is your best bet. Good if you're in college, bad if you're not, because you stick out like a sore thumb - or if you're tall. All that aside, it definitely is a fun place to pick up a pitcher with a group on the cheap. Also, surprisingly, there are a lot of women at this bar on some nights. Like, try Wednesday, guys. I went there with a friend after cocktails nearby and felt a little taken aback by all the coeds. Certainly not an issue, but it only makes getting a drink that much harder. Yeah, speaking of which, it's tough to get a drink when the bar is packed unless you throw tip-money at them (and I wouldn't recommend that). Keep on waving and locking eyes until you see an opening. There are plenty of other ways to get a drink in Amherst. This should be your third option. read more

McMurphy's is a college bar that's always packed to the brim. I would recommend showing up around 9 if you want any chance at getting a stool in here. The drinks are cheap (pitcher of Grateful Dead or Long Island Iced Tea for $15) and the bartenders are quick. It's a great place to go get smashed! read more

Bartenders and staff are nice enough, but the place leaves a lot to be desired. I get it, it's a college bar. But I'm a college student and personally, I don't see the appeal. Cramped and not particularly cheap for a college bar. If I want to get cheap and dirty, I'll go to the spoke. read more

This was the absolute worst bar experience I have ever had, thanks to the rudest human being of all time serving drinks. She charged us for three rounds of double drinks when we only had two (single drinks actually, which apparently they don't serve at this fine establishment), and insisted that we were wrong when we questioned the bill. She suggested that we take it up with the manager and then told us we'd have to wait for 30-40 minutes for said manager to arrive. She accused us of drinking an entire bottle of vodka when the bottle was more than half empty to begin with, and told us over and over again that we were wrong. I don't think I've ever been treated quite so poorly and certainly never in the service industry, where I have worked myself for 20+ years. So disappointing for a bar where my family and I were trying to enjoy a couple of drinks during the baseball game, I definitely won't be back. read more

The bartender overcharged us and when we disputed it she actually held the bottle of alcohol up and tried show us the amount of alcohol we drank. She was rude, and wouldn't listen to reason. What kind of scam do they have going there where they charge you for drinks you didn't have and then are rude when you try to reason with them. Don't go here, it is a scam. read more

It's a nice a place, but watch out for the bartenders trying to swipe your debit card. Ordered a beer and watched as the bartender took my card, pocketed it, then asked for cash. Bartender handed me the beer, then walked away. Stood there for 10 minutes until he finally saw me and took the card out of his pocket and handed it to me. Unbelievable. read more

This place is a umass historical site. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Exactly as it was on my dads day (aside from a name change). The atmosphere is laid back and the bar is intimate and casual. Visit as often as I can, and always let the old college crew when I'm there. Bar atmosphere is A+. the pours are generous and the prices are low. Great visit. Won't go back here anytime soon. Ordered some drinks. Had two rounds with a group of six. In the end our bill was well over 100 dollars. This seemed odd. We inquired about the price and were told we had been poured and charged for doubles. None of us has asked for doubles. Then we saw that we had been charged for 3 rounds of drinks when half of our group only had 1 drink, and the others had 2. We tried to explain to the bartender. The bartender became very rude and demanding, accusatory, and absolutely unwilling to mediate the problem or even listen to our issue. She went to get her bouncer, so we finally sucked it up and paid the ridiculous bill. We were told that double pours were standard at this establishment, yet this was not advertised nor spoken to us in any way. A good way to swindle out of towners but not a good way to make tips nor build a trustworthy image. Very disappointing trip to this establishment. Would not recommend. read more

The bar is packed and smelly, and one of the bar tenders in unbelievably inconsiderate and rude. A friend of mine was having a medicle issue while we were there and kept yelling at us to leave while I was trying to deal with it and make sure she was alright. He was pissed because he thought she was going to throw up when she wasnt drunk at all and was passing out from low blood sugar. I am a student at UMASS and usually love this bar, but one of the bouncers is completely rude, unfair, extremely unprofessional and has made me and a bunch of my friends not even want to go here anymore. Last night a few of my friends and my boyfriend waited in line for a good 15 minutes and when we finally got up to the door he didn't let my boyfriend in because he didn't have a back up picture ID, but a bunch of other cards with his name on it. There was a girl in front of us out of state as well in which he let her in no problem without a back up picture. My boyfriend and I didn't just leave right away because of the unfair treatment and because we waited in line for a bit in rainy weather. The bouncer, I believe his name is Cody, shoved my boyfriend about 3 times very aggressively, when we were just sticking up for ourselves. This guy is a scum bag and everyone I told this story to has agreed and has known him for that. McMurphy's should consider letting this guy go cause they already lost some business over him. read more
