My husband and I had our anniversary dinner here while staying in Edenton. We stepped in and were very impressed with a musician playing a muted trumpet in the entryway. It gave the restaurant a romantic ambiance. We started with the bacon wrapped scallop app, which was cooked to perfection and had a light ginger glaze. Next, my husband had flounder and enjoyed it very much. The waitress offered what he thought was hot sauce, but it turned out it was cocktail sauce. It was a happy accident because he found it to be fresh and a nice compliment to the fish. I had the bistro steak, which is 5 oz of beef medallions. The steak sauce was good. I ordered the steak medium, and I wish I had ordered medium-rare, as I found it to be on the well done side. For dessert, we shared a piece of sour cream poundcake with strawberries. It was to die for! The perfect amount of sweet, and the cake moist. Don't miss this restaurant if you are visiting Edenton, or even if you live here :) read more

This is our second visit - we were shocked at the size of the daily special - jerk chicken entree advertised on their outside board. It was merely an appetizer size of two tiny drumsticks with seven stalks of asparagus and an upcharge for a tiny arugula salad. 19.50 was outrageous - even in this economy. My friend ordered the portobello wrap which came with home made chips and ranch dressing. The chips were very good because she shared. The wrap had spinach and onions which was delicious she said. I ordered the Mexican Bay Breeze salad with shrimp. It was to have Avocado, cucumber, tomatoes, and tortilla chips on top. The casa dressing was fabulous, but there was no avocado. When I asked the server about the missing avocado she replied something like - sorry forgot to mention we don't have avocados today - while walking away. Thus the missing 5th star. If I had known beforehand, I would have ordered the shrimp po' boy because that looked wonderful going by my table to the tables beyond. Otherwise the service was excellent and food great. read more

My brother moved to Edenton from Greensboro for a teaching job and quickly found out you must find your hidden gems, as it is quite the SMALL TOWN! He lives right above the Bistro and knowing my restaurant background, knew it should be our first stop. Very cute and quaint, the chef was impressed and excited that I would ask him to prepare a chefs choice entree. I was presented crab cakes he whipped up, off the menu by the way: very little breading, and ingredients minimal other than lump crab and good flavor (just the way they should be!) I forgot to take a picture amongst the fun I was having talking to locals and the awesome team players behind the bar. Chef came out to say hey which was nice. My husband got the red eye chicken, cooked perfectly and sauce that knocked me off my feet. Spot on! Fresh and generous salads...don't remember much about what my brother had, steak? We even got a free bowl of truffle Fries just because (not to say you should expect it but here is what drumming it up with the locals gets you here I guess!) and they were awesome, thick, not shoe string (I like both)... Last night we came here to celebrate my daughters 2nd birthday. We wanted to go somewhere she would feel special and get sung to. She had gotten the kids spaghetti and her sister the kids grill cheese they seemed to enjoy those. My husband and I ordered a medium rare stake that took forever to come and was medium done. We sent it back and asked for it to go since it took so long. When we sent it back we also asked for a desert for our daughters birthday. They bring the cake and ice cream candle not lit and do not sing..... I was super disappointed. The ice cream was good that come with the brownie cake but the brownie or cake whichever it was had no flavor very blane. Overall I didn't have a great experience and expected more. The restaurant was not full at any means. Living in such a small town with little places to go out to eat you think they'd want to keep you coming back. read more

Cute restaurant on the main strip in Edenton. Warm and pleasant ambiance, menu rating "okay". One of the better restaurant in Edenton (there are very few). Food: Shrimp pasta was a tad oily. Flavor was OK - not particularly great, overall the dish was uninspiring. Spinach salad with fresh strawberries, walnuts and grilled chicken was delicious! Great location in historic downtown. Had the Shrimp and Grits which were good. Would have been better if the shrimp had been grilled. Grit cakes were very tasty. Husband had the pork chops. Stopped in for lunch as we were passing through Edenton. 309 was recommended by a few local clients. So thought we would give it a try & were pleasantly surprised. Waited for Drinks never got them, Bartender was talking the whole time didn't make drinks. Our food was delicious, but the Owner was really RUDE the whole time, wasn't prepared for a busy day.was upset because the restaurant was busy and she couldn't handle the stress. First time ever visiting Edenton and will never go back to 309 Bistro. I thought owner would want there restaurants to be busy and making money but not this Owner she was a Be-Otch. My Advice is to stay away from this restaurant. Edenton would do much better with out this restaurant. The cook did an Amazing job on the food just sad the owner had to ruin it. read more

Another visit to the 309 and we were very pleased. There was live music provided by Wayne James to keep the mood relaxed. I had an adventurous night as I had a veggie I hadn't eaten in 46 years. Just a little background on that; when I was in boot camp, we had brussel sprouts almost every day. They were not good, but because I was so hungry, I ate them anyway. I swore them off forever until last Saturday night. My daughter had some on a side dish with a nice sauce on them and in a moment of madness, I ate one. It was quite good and nothing like the ones I remembered from 46 years ago. This restaurant is a hidden gem in downtown Edenton. I hope some of my Hampton Roads Yelp friends will make the drive down to check it out. You won't be disappointed. read more

Excellent! Had a nice house Cabernet, house salad with house chutney dressing (very good), brussel sprout casserole (good) and one of the specials which was venison with oyster mushroom gravy. This was very tender, peppery & just divine. No room for dessert but lots of delicious sounding offerings. Was by myself on business so look forward to trying an appetizer & dessert when my husband can join me. A little noisy just because old wood building but pleasantly decorated. Lunch here is amazing! Had the taco salad while others in my party enjoyed the grilled tuna sandwhich and seared tuna salad! The staff was very friendly and the owner (family owned) was helping out our waitress. Which is nice to see. The best part though... their homemade pies they take fresh out of the oven for lunch! Chef Kevin (the owner) is very talented! My fiance and I are vegan and he has on more than one occasion whipped us up something special (and delicious) on the fly with whatever ingredients he has on hand on days that they aren't too busy. They also have a vegan pasta with portobello mushrooms and salad as part of their normal menu, and you can turn the portobello mushroom sandwich vegan by omitting the cheese and mayo and adding avocado to makeup for the creaminess. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable about what vegan means -- just be sure to tell them if you are! read more

The place is in a really nice strip of the town and walkable to river front. Restaurant is small but cozy, with nice decoration and really good service. Food is really good and presentation is nice. Loved this restaurant! Situated within an easy walk from our B & B, the 309 was a happy find on our recent visit to Edenton. Wonderful atmosphere, very good food and, happily, a full bar made this one of the few "nicer" eating establishments in town. We did not eat here. Unfortunately we were worried that we wouldn't be nicely enough dressed (even though we weren't dressed like hobos, me in a nice summer dress and my husband in a button down tucked into his bermudas, but we both wore sandals) so we went to the Waterman Grill down the street for dinner. What a mistake. The diners at the 309 were in casual/nice clothing, we would have fit in, no problem. However, after our disaster of a dinner at the Waterman we came in to have a couple strong drinks to try to kill whatever bacteria we might have taken in for dinner. We sat at the bar. There was fantastic live music. An awesome atmosphere, and the bartender, Crystal, was such a pleasure. (There were no alligators if you ever read this Crystal.) The drinks were strong and tasty.
