Excellent atmosphere. A lot of musical street performers come up and perform which is nice, until your hounded for tips. Food wise, it's very good. I would recommend the roasted lamb with potatoes. My boyfriend and I visited 34 on our last night in Rome - It is right near the Spanish Steps and a great little shopping area. You could tell the restaurant is family owned & staffed. Our waiter did not rush our order, so you did have to wait a little bit, but the courses were evenly spaced out so we had time to digest & enjoy each course. We ordered the house carafe of wine, prosciutto & melon, and burrata & tomatoes to start. All were delicious! For entrees, I ordered the spaghetti with clams and my boyfriend got the pumpkin gnocchi with cream sauce topped with pistachio nuts. Both were absolutely delicious - my clams were cooked perfectly and there were so many - I ate the entire bowl! Also, the serving of gnocchi was huge and very filling. Got charged for bread we didn't want or ear (we should have had it taken away, our fault) . . Filled with tour groups. I don't think there was an Italian in there besides the staff (always a bad sign)..The waiter said he'd have some potatoes with the fish, made it seem like he was doing a favor, uncharged us on that. Wonderful menu and a nice area to sit outside. We started with a Roman fried artichoke that is smaller that expected but still amazingly soft to cut and pair with bread. My oxtail was very tender and came with a good amount of meat. The sauce it came with smothered it in a nice tomato-y sort-of gravy (I'm pretty bad with food terminology) that reminded me of beef stew. I got to try my friends clam spaghetti and really really loved how the pasta was cooked; it was so good! This is coming from someone who's not a pasta person in general. We read the reviews and booked this restaurant based on those and its location near our hotel. We were not impressed at all and actually a little disappointed. We ordered meatballs for one of our appetizers and they were small and oily. The pasta orecchiette was also swimming in oil, although very flavorful. The Carbonara was made with bacon, not pancetta like it should have been for an "authentic" restaurant. Lastly, the waiter suggested we give a tip while we were paying the bill. Very reasonably priced - especially the wine. I had a nice Amarone for 70 euro. The service is excellent - our waiter was very pleasant, didn't hurry us and an all-around nice person. Lobster and oxtail taste fine, but the crab tastes like it was frozen in the fridge for more than one week. Waiter was impatient, rude, and he didn't even get us a bread until we asked for ourselves. When the food was ready, he placed the plates in a messy way which we had to rearrange by ourselves. This place is amazing, my wife and I have eaten here every time we have visited Rome. The service is quick and friendly, they have also been very accommodating to my children as they can be picky eaters at times making them chicken fingers which is not on the menu. If you like tripe this is the place to eat it, there is one other place in Rome I would go out of my way for to eat tripe but this one is at the top of the list. We have had other dishes on the menu, all of them have been excellent. Also the house wine is very good I recommend the half bottle it's a bit cheaper and more then enough for one person. read more

Visited here in lieu of another bookmarked restaurant and had to laugh. The place opened around 12:30 pm but many groups of people had already claimed several tables outside. The restaurant filled up quickly, particularly with tourists who came and ordered lobster tails for days. Going against the grain, I opted for a paparadelle boar ragu, which was delicious but got way too salty towards the end. Perhaps good to cut this with a different side or dessert, otherwise it can be overwhelmingly rich. My partner ordered the orecchiette with lamb ragù and asparagus, a lighter yet meaty option. Near the Spanish steps of Rome this place can definitely be very busy and touristy. We decided to try it out anyways since there are good reviews and we couldn't deny that we're tourists too. We ended up sitting outside which was quiet when we first sat down but quickly turned hectic. Many cars passed through and so many solicitors. For a quieter dinner see if you can sit inside or go elsewhere. The inside for us was full and not an option. The menu is decently large and has many options. I saw squash blossoms on there which is one reason why we stayed to eat. Overall the service was brusque and the food too salty. FIORI DI ZUCCA -squash blossoms Nicely done! Good balance of cheese in the blossom with the crispy and chewy battered outside. I liked that they put anchovies inside too but wish that it was more balanced out. PAPARDELLE BOAR RAGU The parpadelle was cooked just right to al dents and I loved the flavor the of the ragu. Still too salty for my tastes though. It would been better if the pasta was a bit thinner and if the boar wasn't just in small chunks that were he'd to grab with the pasta. TRIPE ROMAN STYLE I really enjoyed the complex flavors in this. Two different types of tripe with a creamy tomato sauce, celery, star anise, and cilantro sprinkled on top. The tripe was cooked well to softness. Food here is decent and the inside was very nice. There are lots of options on the menu. Expect small sized dishes unless you order main meals. I ordered the black ravioli with ricotta and smoked salmon in lemon and pepper sauce. The ravioli was misshapen so you could tell it was handmade. The ricotta was fresh and flavoursome. The lemon and pepper sauce was delicious and salty. The smoked salmon was smoky. Yum. Even the parmesan cheese that you can add to your pasta was fresh and strong tasting. The balsamic vinegar was so strongly vinegary. Almost a wine flavour to it. My friend ordered spaghetti in clams sauce with olive oil and it was quite flavoursome despite being a simple dish. Another friend ordered the gnocchi with prawns and red peppers. I thought the gnocchi was quite bland and tasted like bad airplane food. Another friend ordered the boar ragu and said the boar was quite gamey and tasted like beef. The mains are quite big. My friends ordered the grilled turbot fish to share and the waiter kindly deboned it and split it for us. The turbot fish was soft and melt in the mouth yummy. OMG you can't miss this spot if you are in Rome! The food deserves a 10 for quality, the ingredients are very fresh and they make their own dishes that are only found in that restaurant in Rome. They make their own pasta, and the tiramisu is to die for! What really puts this restaurant over the top is the service, waiters treat you as if you were right at home. I ordered the stranscinati alla gricia tartufati, which was a homemade pasta, flat with a slight bent toward the corners. I was cooked with truffle oil and bacon. The menu was thoughtfully put together with only seasonal foods for peak freshness. They had amazing specials including my favorite which is a regional specialty, wild boar ragu. Others in our party got the truffle cream sauce with "big ears". The house wines were flavorful and well balanced, the white was delicate and cut through the rich sauces and the red stood up to the bold flavors in my wild boar sauce. This restaurant came highly recommended. I went on the last night of my Rome visit. I was sitting at a (small) two top table on the patio with a fellow female guest. We had a reservation. The waiter was good. We ordered apps, entrees, more than a bottle of wine & as we were finishing on meal on the patio we found our table surrounded by three people - a man, his wife & adult daughter. They pressured us to leave so they could have the table, despite us not being done & the table being too small. The man told me he would stand there all night if need be. He then went in to have the staff remove us. When they realized we were still finishing our bottle of wine and told them we weren't done he was seated inside the restaurant where he continued to harass me by waving at me with his middle finger from the main window of the restaurant and making other inappropriate gestures. When my companion and I went to leave after finishing our bottle of wine he came out and yelled "This is Rome" in our faces many times. I would've expected the staff to reprimand this obvious regular for harassing previously seated, women guests but they did not. Although the food was good & waiter nice, they are influenced by rude & obnoxious regulars at the cost of a visitors experience & due respect. There's many places in Rome to eat. I suggest trying a place that respects the visits of all & doesn't enable the obnoxious regular. read more

AL 34 is an decent restaurant if you're near Piazza del Spagna and looking for a bite to eat. The pictures from the website make the restaurant more attractive than it really is in person. It's a great place for family and kids, but if you're looking for a romantic or quiet evening, I would probably go somewhere else. The lasagna was ok, but the lobster pasta was a bit salty. It was 10:00pm and the place was only about half full. The host was standing at the door and we looked at the menu and stated that we would like dessert. He refused us, stating that this is a restaurant and if we wanted dessert we should go for gelato. If I wanted gelato I would have gone to the 30 of them in the area. Hotel San Carlo suggested 34, so we walked around the corner for an authentic Italian dinner. WOW, it was absolutely wonderful. Our host was engaging and efficient. His mother and father started the restaurant in 1968. Mom comes in nearly every day still. Now a nephew is also involved so it's still in the family. Our waiter was patient when we had questions, quick with recommendations when we asked and routinely checked on us to see if we needed anything. The salads were fresh and had several different vegetables; the bread was wonderful. We like oil w some balsamic to dip our bread; he put both bottles on the table - have at it! All the dishes were wonderful traditional Italian meals. Lasagna, pumpkin ravioli with sausage and "ravioli 34" were all fabulous. Our liter carafe of house red wine went perfectly - not a fabulous wine but for 11 euro it was great. One of our group loves moscato so with a bottle of that she was smiling from ear to ear. Our waiter was so focused on service he rushed to our table if I began to pour more wine. It was his job, he said, so I let him do it! For dessert we went with our waiters recommendation - tiramisu. Absolutely wonderful meal! My friend and I stumbled on this place for lunch one day and it ended up being our favorite meal in Rome. We sat outside on a beautiful day in April. I ordered the pumpkin gnocchi topped with pistachios and my friend ordered ravioli stuffed with burrata served in a shrimp scampi sauce. Boy did this meal surprise us! I will say that this was quite possibly the best meal we had the entire time we were in Rome. Additionally, the server also spoke very good english so it was easy to get help and suggestions. Needless to say I was not disappointed and will be back.
