He sorted through the coins and organized them by value, and explained how much they'd sell them for and what he'd buy from us. Example: He'd give us $10 a piece for the coins valued at $12. I made a special trip to this coin shop to get an idea of what they were about and in hopes of spotting a good deal. First impressions are important with regard to location, then of course the inside of a business itself along with customer service. The shop is located in a nice strip center on Slaughter Lane - check. That's when it gets a bit confusing. You see a sign that says "Diversified Insurance" in big letters and "Coin Shop" in small letters underneath. I went inside and walked into, yes, an insurance agency with a bunch of insurance agents. I did a double take and stood there until someone asked me what I needed. I explained that I thought a coin shop was housed here, to which they explained that it was all the way in the back of the business. So, I walked through the tiny hallway, feeling like I was intruding, but eventually saw a tiny nook in the back with a couple of glass counters. There were two nice gentlemen working, one other customer and me, and I felt cramped. Needless to say, I thought I'd keep an open mind and see what they had. The employees were nice enough and pleasant to talk to I must say. However, the small, cramped, nook they were in left a lot to be desired. The shelves inside the counters had some coinage but appeared laid out at random with no real organization between the various types they had for sale. I also saw no clear pricing on anything they sold nor any type of pricing guide posted anywhere. It appears as though to order most things from them you place the order and then come back and obtain it once they find what you're looking for. I did not see stocks on-hand of what people commonly buy such as American Eagles and such. This setup does not seem to be something that the average curious customer off the street would feel comfortable coming in off the street to browse around. As a side note, their prices for selling junk silver appeared quite high compared to other coin shops in Austin by at least $2-$3 per $1 face value. Especially with silver trading so low lately. A serious silver collector will know what I am talking about. Needless to say, they did not have anything I wanted in stock, so I did not walk out with anything, which is unusual for me. I did take a quick trip to Capital Coin and Bullion afterward and found some great stuff there, as they are always stocked. And yes, I compared their junk silver prices and that's how I know South Austin Coin Exchange is not the best deal. So, I give friendliness and knowledge about coins 4 stars but location, setup, stock on-hand, and prices, I give a reluctant 2 stars. I say "reluctant" because I wanted to like this place. I think they would do well to start up their own shop, in their own location, and beef up their inventories. You can't sell what you don't have. I'll keep an open mind though because I believe in buying locally. read more

I called, I came down, and I made a deal quickly and easily. They buy and sell precious metals and didn't tell me, "no, we're not buying gold today." They paid a little over spot prices, too - not as much as I would have hoped, but a fair deal. They pay with a company check, and I took that to their bank to get it converted into a certified check to make sure it was a "good check." It was good indeed. I like an honest, square deal without a lot of drama. Mr. Goldsmith (his real name!) is a good guy. After having dealt with Capital Coin and Austin Rare Coins, I like Brad Goldsmith and his South Austin Coin Exchange. I've sold precious metals here on two occasions. Both times Mr. Goldsmith *quickly* measured up what I brought in, calculated the value, and offered me the current spot price for my items - in cash. He offers you *current* spot price in your favor. Gold was at $1297 an ounce at the time, he gave me a flat $1300. I walked out with my money in about 5 minutes. I was stunned the transaction went that fast - Bradley knows his stuff. My 2nd time I brought in some mint silver coins, assorted types of junk silver, and different types of silver rounds. He looked over the 7 different types of coins I brought in, figured up the price according to the silver content for the junk silver and 1 oz rounds, and gave me . . . the spot price. In 5 minutes. I walked out with cash. Note: his counter can be a little hard to find since he shares office space with an insurance company. He's past the front door and entry room, just ask the secretary for help if you can't find him (which you should). This guy is on the level and fair - he will not cheat you. I inherited some coins a year ago and finally decided to do something with them, so I googled "coin dealers" and South Austin Coin Exchange appeared to be closest to me so I looked at the BBB rating, it was good so I called for an appointment. I then find out they've moved to a Suite in a building on Capital of Texas Hwy (about 15 minutes farther away). I get there and ring the door bell and a guy steps out and says, "wait here in the hallway, we are only seeing one customer at a time". I said okay and waited about 5 minutes until they called me in. So I walk into a room that's about 10'x10' but feels smaller because there are boxes and junk all around the outer walls and a table and chairs in the middle. There's a surveillance camera set up on one of the boxes, but the whole vibe was extremely shady to me. I had a couple of coins that I thought might be of significant value, so I asked him to assess them for me. The first was a 1994 Silver Eagle Bullion coin never circulated, touched by me and a couple of other people and valued from my research from a low of $35 up to $9000 for a MS70. The guy offers me $27! The next was a 1881-O Morgan Silver Dollar that had been certified as genuine MS 64/65 and in a sealed plastic envelope (can only be opened by cutting it) which ranged in value from $195-$3425...he offered $30 for it! At that point I thanked him for his time and walked out. I would not recommend these guys as they seem extremely shady to me. read more

I went by the shop today for the first time and had a truly awful experience. The guy who I spoke with was an older gentlemen and was extremely rude, offensive, and essentially insulting. I brought in 10 uncirculated and clearly high grade Morgan silver dollars, and mentioned the coins and the year along with the varieties I had (which were several) to which he responded with "I don't give a d*mn about 1921 or any worthless error". Which was a shocking first interaction needless to say. He then proceeded to handle my coins carelessly and just grabbed with thumb and index finger grabbing the obverse and reverse of the coins (which any collector already knows you only handle by the rim since it can damage the coins and they can drop in value considerably if fingerprints are etched into the metal) and offered half the price off silver which I declined and took my coins and had to carefully make sure it was cleaned and his wreck less and infuriating unprofessional handling wasn't left on the coin to cause damage. One of the single worst experiences I've had with a coin shop or business owner... Trying to rip me off and ruin some very valuable coins of mine in the process. He should shut his doors before he ruins someone's collection or rips them off for a small fortune which has probably been done already. read more

I recently had a very good experience with Bradley Goldsmith, owner of South Austin Coin Exchange. My now-deceased parents left behind a somewhat large collection of proof sets and mint sets. I submitted my list of sets to SACE and to another reputable local coin dealer. The other dealer advised that they were not buying sets at the standard 70% of Grey Sheet bid prices because the price of raw silver had dropped significantly over the preceding two weeks. This was very surprising, as most coin buyers are interested in the coins, not the metallic content. I checked with Bradley to see if the drop in silver would impact his willingness to buy, and he said no, it would not. I then went to SACE and met with Bradley. The experience was a complete pleasure. We made our deal at 70% Grey Sheet, and he paid on the spot. I left feeling pleased to have done business with a fair dealer and a straight shooter.
