I absolutely love Amy at Elements Salon. I was so thrilled to find her. My hair is difficult because it's so thin and has to have the exact right haircut to fall right. It's also hard to get the right color. Amy does a fantastic job at both. My hair looks better than it's looked in years. Plus, she has a wonderful personality, super sweet and personable. This is one of the rare occasions for me to take a minute to give a negative review, but I feel like people should be aware. Tim is not very good at cutting hair. I am a male, and every aspect of my hair cut is horrible. I have thick hair, and he took it as a personal vendetta to try and thin my hair out enough to make me look like a middle aged balding man. He left patches of long hair, and doesn't really know how to use clippers- was unable to give me a simple fade. I very specifically told him to not blend or fade the side with the top, and he did exactly that. I came to see him after another stylist accidentally turned me green because I heard he excelled in color corrections - he was able to fix it up for me (for cheaper than she originally charged!) and I'll never trust my hair with anyone else again. I've seen Tim for cut, color, and extensions for both natural and adventurous styles (before and afters posted!). Unlike the rest of the field, he under promises and over delivers. He's the best stylist I've ever had in terms of consistency, precision, and attention to detail. He's just as particular as I am and won't let let me leave the salon unless everything is perfect and I know how to style it just like him. Sometimes it's time for a change, maybe times it's overdue. I noticed someone in my workout class, that had great hair and asked where she went, even though she lives in the south loop she makes her way to 4 Elements, said she's been going for sometime and loves it. She mentioned that the people their are a good group, and when I asked her about scheduling she told me they have an awesome online booking system. I recently ran into some issues with being able to get in, one was a quick appointment request, certainly no problem there, I understand people aren't always available, and the second was my fault, due to an emergency I had to cancel. That one, I didn't get a response so I had no idea if the text was even received or it was and she was annoyed that I had to cancel. This back story is important to highlight the ease of online booking at 4 Elements, when I had a few minutes I was able to pull up the talent, service/prices, and schedule. So easy to select who, what and when. Stress free, no waiting for a call or text, you can go online 24/7 and set your time, when you have time. I selected Tim based on reviews and being lucky that he was available on short notice, no worries about a special request. My appointment started right on time, I like that they tell you that if you run late your slot will end whenever it was supposed to to avoid starting the next client late. I did see him finish a client right before my appointment time, another refreshing thing. I love the way he works, takes a look at your hair, does ask some questions and wants to know what you want, how you style it and so on. I gave him the details and asked what do you think here, I like to hear what a professional thinks. I did like his suggestions and decided to roll with it. He's very skilled at cut and color, after doing that he'll go over styling with you as he's doing the process. His personality, he's lots of fun, had a good time talking about travel and interesting fun facts, think of trivial pursuit at the salon. I made an appointment online for a no-chip manicure. When I got there, the greeter was pleasant, but that's about it. The manicurist took her time, then walked me in the back and put a towel down with gross hair all over it. There was no conversation or effort to try to make me comfortable. She put polish remover on my nails for over 30 minutes, which still didn't take anything off. She called another woman over to see why it wasn't coming off. I told them that my fingers started burning. They said they've never had complaints before, like that was supposed to make me feel better. Then she said that I should go back to where I got them done before. I had an hour for a lunch break to get a no-chip manicure, and 40 minutes later, I walked out with half the old polish still on, no manicure done. What a waste of parking fees! read more

This review is long overdue. I first met Milena last October when I got a scalp treatment and haircut. I had been dealing with a dry flaky scalp for YEARS and tried so many different products/treatments and nothing ever worked. Milena looked closely at my scalp and determined what was wrong, whipped up a magic potion that has now made me flake free. She recommended a product for me but did not push me to buy it. I did buy it and it has kept my scalp balanced and flake-free. Milena has honestly changed my life (I know this sounds dramatic, but I really was so miserable and embarrassed with how bad my scalp was) and I can't thank her enough. When I walked in I was greeted with a smile and offered a drink. 4. The manicurist was really friendly and took her time at each step. She was very thorough. I was in need for a haircut and couldn't go to the usual stylist I go to so I went to 4 Elements salon, which could acommodate me. I explained to Rebecca I wanted a round bob. She convinced me that for my face shape square bob would work better. I agreed, but told her I still want it to be a bob, and minimal layers (only at the ends). We ended up with short hair, not a bob. Mind me, I went there with hair past shoulder lenght, 15 inches. I ended up with yucky 3 inches layers on top, and the rest of my hair 5-6 inches long Also, she chopped off more on side than another. The haicut doesn't even remotely resemble the one she herself recommended. It wouldn't have been so bad had she kept the lenght longer, as I told her, around jaw line. Mid me, I went there with hair shoulder lenght, so she had plenty to satisfiy her uncontrollable cuttning frenzy and still keep it medium lenght. What is particularily maddening in this whole experience, is that after the job was done she asked me: do you like it? I did not answer; I was speachless processing how can you just chop off a year of hair growth with no respect to what the client wants. What an amazing experience! I've passed by this salon a gazillion times but never thought to get my hair done there. Instead I aimlessly wandered throughout Chicago trying to find a salon that suits me. My haircut was probably 1.5years in the making. I've always dreaded making hair appointments because of you work normal business hours during the week, it's hard to get a hair appointment that fits your schedule, and if you do. They're like 3 weeks wait time. I wish I was a responsible enough adult to make an advance appointment and abide by it, but I'm not. I made my appointment to 4 elements on a Thursday night when I couldn't fall asleep and finally decided I should cut my hair. So I went on their website and at 2am in the morning I made an appointment for Sunday, there were Saturday appointments but I was busy that day. Availability was amazing, use of website was awesome too. Ricky... Amazing. He was very kind and a master at cut and color. He asked a lot of questions to ensure that we had the same vision. Ricky was also honest on what would look good on me and not just cut a style I would regret later. Never have I received so many compliments on my cut from friends and coworkers. I usually leave salons and think it wasn't a good fit, but I throughly enjoyed my time at 4 elements that I would 100% go back. They have a very homey atmosphere that makes you feel welcomed. The Negative Elements: -The planets aligned and I arrived on time, but was left waiting for a full 20 minutes. While I was given some complimentary water, I eventually had to consult the receptionist as to whether I was getting a cut and style or participating in some sort of social experiment. -I'm sure my eyebrows arched after being told I would have to wait "just a few minutes more." The receptionist unhelpfully assured me it was "not [her] fault" and no one apologized. Really? I was that menacing? -A different stylist stepped up to do my hair, but proceeded to leave me under a dryer with ever-expanding curlier and curlier hair while he did the hair of his sister or cousin or someone he knew who showed up shortly after he started work on me. -And, it was 'spensive! The Positive Elements: -Due to location, one of the only hair games in (that part of) town. - Parking is easy. - The haircut itself is pretty great- I looked like a medium glamorous movie star instead of an Irish washerwoman for a couple of days. No doubt, the absence of a labor-intensive blowout was so my stylist could fit in another person, but if it wasn't the case it might not have been a bad call. - I was given the option to come back anytime in the next week to get it fixed if it still wasn't right. This review is not for the actual service provided but for the poor customer service that did not allow me to receive my scheduled appointment. I booked an appointment and when I showed up was told that they couldn't find record of this. Upon further review, they found it (on the correct day/time) but said they did not have capacity and could not see me. They called their manager on the phone and I was told point blank that they were not willing to do anything to meet my scheduled appointment nor provide any incentive to come back. Been going to the same person for almost 10 years, and after she had switched salons for the 4th time I decided I was done and needed to find a spot more convenient for me instead of her. Their ad on Milwaukee Avenue has 25% off for first time customers, so I checked it out and will continue to go back. The salon is well designed, clean, and modern. I went here as part of a $31 promotion and saw Timothy. He was on time, very friendly (as was everyone that was there last night) and really seemed like he wanted to address my problem of "triangle hair" (which always happens to me when it gets too long) rather than just giving me a basic cut and ignoring it like some other stylists I have had in the past. My one gripe with this place are the massive, full length mirrors they make you sit in front of in the chair. I dont know what it is, but mirrors that big bug the heck out of me. Why do I need to be able to see my shoes during a haircut? Well anyway, that has nothing to do with Timothy, who gave me a pretty sweet 'do that has held up for 5 weeks already. Thanks man! Ask for Tim! He is the best! I've went to many high end salons in the chicago area (Michael Anthony, Sean Patricks, Mixed Co, act... the list goes on) and this is the best salon in Chicago. Tim gives a consultation and listens to what you want. He also asks you about your hair care and gives you helpful tips. He will not fry your hair like many other stylists do to clients who want highlights. I had a great experience here and will be making this my regular salon. My search has ended! read more

I've been meaning to post a review for a LONG time but just never got around to it. Well here I am, 10 months later after my bangs finally grew out. I saw Rebecca back in February for the second time and wanted an overall trim but still something a little 'different' this time. I decided I wanted side bangs and expressed to her that my hair has a hard time staying a particular way because it's so straight. She told me that if she put a shorter layer of bangs under my side bang, it might hold... She completely chopped off my bangs. I was TERRIFIED. My face showed it too. I said "Oh..I wasn't expecting you to cut them that short". And she replied with "Well, it's hair, it will grow out." I was in disbelief and tried to hide my anger. I didn't even know how to feel for the rest of the haircut. I think I almost cried. I had one layer of short bangs way above my eyebrows and another layer of bangs that were supposed to be 'side bangs'. I've never seen this 'look' before and couldn't tell if she even meant to do that or not to my hair. I checked out and paid, and the front desk lady didn't even ask about my service and if I liked me haircut. In fact, she was kind of rude. Needless to say, I will not be going back here. read more

Muppets and Haircuts. You wouldn't think they went together, but they certainly do... Tim cut my hair, and talked about Sesame Street and the Muppets the whole time. The man has an incredible memory for all these characters. Snuffleupagus, Grover, Prarie Dawn.... you name it. Despite the fact that I was 100% whether he was actually paying attention when cutting my hair, the cut turned out fantastic, and I am very very pleased with it. I will definitely come back. 4 elements has good deals right now - in the month of October, their haircuts are $31 (part of the Pretty City offer). I also got their introductory rate for a manicure and pedicure -- pedi was $33 and mani was $15. It's not dirt cheap but this salon is pretty nice, so it was a pretty good deal. The pedicure was great, though the massage chairs are so powerful they nearly pushed me out of my seat. The manicure was ay-ok, nothing to rave about, but when I stuffed up one wet nail (totally my fault), the manicurist was very patient about fixing it up. read more

This was the only local option when I first moved to the neighborhood so it was a no brainer to try it out. Other salons are starting to open up in the neighborhood so there may be some competition starting soon, but this is one of the better full service salons I've gone to. They 're open 7 days a week and it's usually very easy to get in for a quick service. I also really enjoy and online scheduling option - i find myself scheduling more services than before. What I really value is that they don't spread your service out across multiple people - shampoo, color, cut, style - it's all done by 1 person. That means the world to me and keeps time in the salon down to under 2 hours for full cut, color and style. Specific Recommendations: Mani/Pedi - Claudia does the best i've had done - especially for my sad short nails. Color/Cut - Dyanna - Down to earth, fast, and has finally found the right color to match my grow out without my hair turing a brassy red 3 weeks before touch up. read more

Tim is amazing. I have thick, curly, frizzy, difficult hair. I came in yesterday to receive a Brazilian Blowout and a haircut (I was 6 months overdue for a trim). I had an idea for what I wanted my hair to look like and I showed Tim some pictures for inspiration. Not only did my hair turn out EXACTLY like the pictures, Tim was a delight for the 3.5 hours I sat in his chair getting everything done. He was so fun to talk with and the best part is that he TAUGHT me the correct way I should be blow drying, flat ironing, and curling my hair. I have been to many, many high end salons and never have I had a stylist actually teach me how to do my hair at home! As the summer months dwindle away, I still need a place for a faux tan. 4 Elements is my go-to for their awesome Body Glow Sunless airbrush body tanning. I've gone here now twice for the spray tan and it is well worth the $50. It's definitely not for the modest but if you want a fail-proof spray tan (ahem, sometimes those booths can be downright scary for what kind of a result you'll get) it's worth it. So, I'm in love with Tim (aka - Edward Scissorhands)...okay, I'm actually in love with his haircuts...he gives good cut. I've been going to him religously for just over a year now and he's so amazing that my best friend from Denver, CO now flies in to get her hair done by him too - crazy huh? I also let him convince me to put caramel highlights in my chestnut brown hair - beautiful - as if he'd do anything else. He gives 20% off to first time clients and if you refer a friend he'll give you 20% off also. Plus, he's totally OCD so he'll make sure your cut looks perfect and you'll love it. I went here while living in Chicago. Diana is great. I had a semi-complicated angular bob and blonde color, and she was great with both. Not fancy shmancy or anything, but very tasteful, clean, etc. It's the perfect amount of ambiance for the price (which is reasonable). I've been coming here since the salon opened; loved it then and love it now. I followed my esthetician here from another salon since Iryna works magic on my bushy eyebrows. They carry one of the best skin care lines (Yonka) I've ever used. I was also able to find a wonderful stylist, Timothy, whom I've been going to for at least 6 years now. He does a great job with my hair cuts and color and always leaves me laughing. This salon is like one of my second homes in the neighborhood and if it wouldn't seem weird, I'd probably go in there to hang out even when I didn't have appointments. I wish there was some way for me to distinguish this review and keep it separate from my other two. Here's the deal and my beef: 4 Elements is run by a pair of sisters. Agnes is responsible for the hair salon, Ewa for the spa and nail salon in back. When preparing to pay for my haircut last week Friday, I asked some questions about the facials. Ewa was near the reception desk, so I spoke with her. I explained exactly what I was looking for. Basically, I did not want massages or multiple masks put on my face. My regular facialist (of more than 2 years) understood this, but she moved out of the States, and so I was looking for a new facialist. When I go for a facial, I want two things: (1) deep cleansing and (2) light chemical peel. Granted, these things are not on the menu of 4 Element's offered facials. But, I assumed when I made the appointment that when Ewa told me they could accommodate my request, that it would be. I arrive for my facial Wednesday afternoon, and meet Iryna. She's lovely and competent. Without talking to me at all, she launches into the facial...and it is the salon's basic elemental facial. This was exactly what I did not ask for. So, I get the massages, I get masks, but I do not get the deep cleansing or the chemical peel I came for. As someone with problem skin and a long history of getting facials, I can tell you that this was not a very good facial for someone who tends to breakout. The Yonka products that the spa uses are supposed to be phenomenal, but even the Yonka products that are meant for normal to oily skin are heavy. My face felt like an oil slick when I walked out. In fact, I had to run home to wash my face before heading back to work. The following morning, I woke up to a face full of new zits. Now, a good facial does not cause you to break out in painful red bumps. I have to give props to 4 Elements on a couple of things though. The treatment rooms are inviting and well-insulated so that noise from the surrounding areas does not penetrate. The ambient music playing in my treatment room provided a relaxing atmosphere. Also, the beds are super comfy. I'll be moving on to find another facialist, but I'll definitely be back to visit the front of the salon for more of Ricky's and Agnes'' hair magic. read more

I am extremely impressed by the stylists and staff at this salon. They are great. I booked an appointment for a manicure with Paulina and Keraste conditioning treatment with a haircut with Timothy. Both were amazing. The manicure was really nice and she took her time and did a fantastic job. I absolutely love Timothy's cut. I have never been so happy with a haircut. He did an amazing job and paid very close attention to the type of hair I have. My hair is naturally wavy and he asked me all different questions to get to know how I like my hair done. I went in for a nice trim and he did a great job at making my hair look fresh, healthy and gave it the style its been lacking. After reading several (ok probably hundreds) of threads on where to go for a great cut I picked 4 Elements today. I was early for my appointment but was pleasantly surprised they were ready for me. My jacket was taken and I was offered something to drink. Sat down for about 30 seconds before Aldo came out and introduced himself. Can I say I heart Aldo!!! And I love my hair! Made the appointment with the intent to chop it all off. Over 9" to be exact! I sat down in the chair and we talked about my hair for a bit. He kept asking are you really sure you want it all gone. I told him not really but what's the point of having long hair if it isn't beautiful. He said well lets take some off and see what we got. He washed my hair w/ a tingly shampoo (forgot to ask what it was) that felt great and then back to the chair to get to work. I told him that I trusted the expert - him. I told him how I'm tired of not having any style to my hair and explained how I normally wore it. He is wonderful to talk to and he kept trimming little by little. I was surprised to see he stopped below my shoulders. He asked if I thought the length was ok . I said it was great and that he could go shorter if he thought it would look better - he said this will be good. (the pictures i brought with were much shorter and i didn't even have to show them - he's very intuitive) He found my natural part (which i was extremely nervous about bcuz i never part my hair in the middle) and began to shape my hair. Long story short (just realized im rambling and really long reviews suck) I love what he did with my hair and I would highly recommend to anyone who asks. Bought a yelp deal to go to an esthetician. Cleanest wax I've ever experienced. They are extremely thorough and they use the best wax available. My esthetician was super knowledgeable about what she was doing and never hesitated to answer any questions. She made me feel pretty comfortable. Also got a manicure. The lady was pretty thorough as well. She took her time to make sure everything was well done. I would go again if I could afford doing this every month!
