I love this salon. It is very modern, the service is excellent and the stylists know what they are doing. This is the only place I will get my hair cut in the city. I've gone to both Timothy and Joanna, and now I stick with Joanna, although both are excellent. I have had some issues with getting my hair colored there, which is why I only gave it four stars instead of five. The first time I got color it faded very fast, which was disappointing for how much you pay. And the second time I got color it didn't turn out quite how I had hoped but it still looked good. They also have a great line of products here and have really good sales on them often. Overall, a great place. read more

I thought my hair was hopeless. I'd abused it so much with chlorine, swim caps, pulling it back in ponytails/buns for marathon training, that I literally had a line of breakage around my head. Disgusting. Given that Great Clips is my normal stylist (and knowing that they couldn't fix this mess), I jumped on the Rue La La deal to 4 elements. And I'm so glad I did. Rebecca was an absolute delight and did an amazing job with my poor damaged hair. After studying my strands, and listening to me plead not to cut it all off, she managed to salvage my hair AND keep it past shoulder length. It looks fabulous, and I can't speak highly enough of her and the fantastic job she did. Basia did a great job with my manicure, though I did manage to chip it a day later. But I'm sure that was from swimming, bootcamp class, and softball practice. There's a reason I don't get my nails done. Everyone at the salon was extremely welcoming and friendly, and offered advice afterwards on hair products, etc. (without trying to sell me on anything). Just a little background on myself: I'm extremely picky about my fine, naturally wavy (frizzy) and over processed hair, what goes on it and who touches it (battle wounds after managing an upscale salon and spa for three years). This led me on a month long search to find a talented stylist in the Chicago area. For my first appointment with Agnes, the owner of Four Elements Salon, I only booked a haircut and Kerastase treatment (at this point still flying back home for my color); strategically planned, in order to gain an opinion on my new cut and then on what to do with my color. Status post a perfect haircut, I felt confident enough to book my next color and cut with Agnes. After consulting with me for a good ten minutes, we agreed to avoid bleach and give it a dynamic color very close to my natural with the use of highlights. I also opted for another Kerastase Vita-Ciment treatment because they're now only $20 (other salons $35+)! I was so impressed with the results of her expertise that I called my mom before leaving the salon to see if she needed her hair done during her next visit in town. I would like to say money isn't a factor when it comes to my hair, but an added bonus here (as if any more were necessary) is that her service far exceeds the price and you'll leave with extra money in your pocket, unless of course you're like me and just spend it on more products... read more

When I first moved to Chicago in September 2009, I wanted to find a good salon. Every three months, for my first year here, I would find some sort of Groupon/YouSwoop/other daily deal and try out a new salon (I'd actually check on Yelp before buying). From these, 4 Elements Salon won my little "contest." I went back recently for a haircut, and I was not disappointed with my judgment. I know lots of people on here talk about how great Tim is, and I'm going to add my name to that list. He cut my hair last time, and cut it this time, and each time he's styled my hair better than anyone. I'm able to replicate the style at home better than I've done at other salons. Tim is also a great listener when it comes to my hair. We talked a lot about my hair history, styles, and colors, and when he suggested subtle highlights (which initially freaked me out because of some bad highlighting experiences), I decided to take the risk. They were absolutely perfect and I love the extra brightness! He was also very helpful in teaching me techniques for doing my hair at home. I got my haircut there as part of a beauty package, which I was also pleased with. It came with a pedicure, massage and facial. The facial was fantastic and it was great to get one after the winter thaw. The massage was alright, although I think I'm not really a massage person. No complaints with the pedicure. I've been buying Groupons for salon deals for the past two years in search of a place that I would want to stay at after I used my deal. 4 Elements has become that place! The front desk staff is always helpful and friendly, and the salon is intimate and very clean. Love the fireplace to sit by during the winter-time while waiting for my appointment! I am hooked on Melissa for my hair. I have had several haircuts (she had to fix some bad hair cuts from some of my previous Groupon salon purchases!) and she has done a wonderful job with color also. Super-friendly and easy-going. I have had a facial and waxing with Iryna, both of which were really excellent as well. The salon sends out emails with monthly special offers too, which have allowed me to try out a massage also. I alternate between salons here and a few other places as I'm not always in Chicago, but I have been a client here for sometime now. I usually book an appointment with Ashley (she's amazing btw). This one particular time I did not and I REALLY wanted to get my hair done and naturally my stylist was booked and couldn't take me last minute. I had someone else do my hair and she didn't do a bad job, but it was just too dark for my liking. Through out the entire process I kept stressing that I would like the color to match the lighter pieces of my hair. When the appointment was said and done my hair was too dark... I was assured that after a few washes my hair would be the color I wanted.I was skeptical but paid and left. I got home and just hated the color. To keep my long story short, I called the salon back and they HAPPILY said they would fix my color for me at my earliest convenience . I went in the same day I called, and there were no questions asked, no attitude, and everyone there was so understanding. The customer service was exceptional.. so exceptional that I felt bad having to be the person who does this, but I really did hate the color. To top it off my favorite stylist, was the one who did the color correction. I should have just waited for her to have an opening, which in this case was the day after, and this could have been an avoidable situation. read more

I highly recommend Timothy for color, cut, stylings, etc. He will consult with you each visit to consider what products you use, how you style, what you are willing to do in the future, and more. He will also show you a new styling technique each visit so you can build your styling repertoire and learn how to manipulate your hair in ways that are best for you. After reading so many fabulous reviews about Timothy, I had to go check it out myself! I have never had a set stylist because of location, price or they just didn't listen to what I really wanted! Timothy has got it ALL! After setting up an appointment online SPECIFICALLY with Timothy, I got to the Salon and they said I was with a woman stylist. For my eyebrows (straight guy here), I usually use Iryna. She really is great, quick, and efficient. The other ladies are also competent, but not as good. I fought an internal battle yesterday. I had to decide if I would cheat on my long-standing hair stylist and get the cut and color I so desperately needed, or if I would tough it out until after the new year with my tired tresses and wait for an appointment with my regular girl. Turns out, I have a cheating heart. After a referral from a co-worker, I made an appointment with Tim @ 4 Elements. Since I'd been going to the same stylist for years, I was nervous (change freaks me out), but once I walked into the salon and met Tim, I knew everything was going to be okay. I mean, the guy was wearing a fedora and literally had a holster with scissors, brushes, combs and razors strapped to his hip. The man comes ready for battle. I sat down in Tim's chair and told him my poor hair needed an update. When I told him I was pretty open to suggestion, he offered up what he thought would look best on me: A demi-gloss single process in a deep auburn color, keep my length and add a bunch of layers. Sold. And so he went to work. While snipping and dying, Tim kept me in stiches. He even gave me a full style afterward my cut and color once I told him I was meeting up with friends for drinks that night. He was like, "Girl, I'm going to give you 'free drink hair' tonight!" I stopped in last minute today, needing my roots and color done ASAP. I spend a lot of money on spa and salon services throughout the year. I get extensions done regularly, blow outs, color, etc... I have been very loyal to the person that does my extensions, have not found a good blow out and have been trying to find someone that can get my color right, bouncing between 2 people. I have gone to this salon before for blow outs and trims, but never color. I met Alexis when I walked in and explained my dilemma and what I was looking for. She was able to take me when I walked in, which was a godsend. She took me to her chair and proceeded to ask me more questions to really understand what I was looking for. This was the first time, in a long time, that someone actually gave me a true consultation. As we discussed it more, she was able to understand what I was looking for. Previously, I'm sure I was not articulating it correctly, this is partly my fault and mostly the stylist fault. Part of a stylist job is to consult with you to truly understand what you want. I was reminded of that today and left the salon very happy. I also was pleasantly surprised when I wasn't charged a ridiculous amount, like other places, which added to my positive experience. I could tell that Alexis truly enjoys what she does, she explained the continuous education they do (which was apparent), she walked me through my options and she did an awesome job. Stay away!!! Unless you enjoy your scalp being terrorized, do not go here (specifically to Aldo, the Scalp Terrorist). I've been looking for a new stylist since mine moved to Denver. I've had the same girl do my hair for the last 10 years. It's definitely difficult to find, then trust someone to do your hair (all you women understand, I'm sure). Being a huge fan of Groupon, I was pretty excited when I saw 4 Elements Salon had a $25 for $50, especially because it was so close to where I live. When I first arrived, the receptionist was very welcoming. The establishment was was trendy, as were the employees. I was there to have my roots touched up. I should add that I've been bleaching my hair for the last 7-8 years, so I have a pretty high tolerance for bleach on my scalp. He, Aldo my stylist, began the process and everything was going smoothly (the conversation was a bit rough since I felt like I was the one was who was making the effort to try and keep it going). Once he felt like the bleach had been on long enough he rinsed my head. Apparently he was incorrect in his calculation of the time it took the bleach to process in my hair because I had orange roots (I'm naturally a brunette). I told him I was not happy with the outcome. After fiddling his thumbs and consulting with 3 other stylists, he decided to put another application of bleach on my head...bad idea buddy! I let him do this, though in the back of my mind I knew I should have come back another day, but figured he had 10+ years under his belt and he probably knew better than I. After about 5 minutes of the second application of bleach on my head I told him my head was burning. I will reiterate that I am VERY tolerant to bleach. He asked me if I could stand to keep it on at least 10 minutes longer and I said I would try. Once again, I should have listened to that voice in the back of my head. After about another minute I told him my head was on fire and the bleach needed to come off now. He dilly dallied for about another 2-3 minutes before rinsing my head again. My scalp was literally burning, rinsing my head with cool water wasn't even soothing. The color of my roots went from orange to a golden, brassy yellowish tone...which did NOT match my hair at all. I was pretty upset and feeling like someone poured a gallon of gasoline on my head and threw a match at me. The stylist did give me a deep conditioning treatment (probably to prevent my hair from falling out) and told me to come back a week later and he would fix my roots. I was courteous and nice once he was finished with everything and even tipped him 20%. I left that salon knowing that there was no way in hell I would be returning to let that man touch my hair again. But what I didn't realize was the best was yet to come. Two days later I realized I has scabs all over my scalp!!! Are you kidding me? I paid to have someone literally BURN MY HEAD!!! No way will I be returning to to see Aldo the Scalp Terrorist! read more

I've finally found my go-to salon in the city, and go-to hair dresser. It's out of the way of the hectic downtown areas, yet still close to the city, and street parking is fairly easy to find. Prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is relaxing but clean and well run. Front desk staff is really nice, as are everyone else I encountered. The best part for me was my stylist, Tim. I almost don't want to talk him up even more than that other yelpers have in fear that he may become too busy! I went in for partial highlights. My hair had become pretty saturated with blond and I told Tim that I wanted it to be more natural looking, and a little closer to my natural color. He did just that, getting the foils close to the roots, and making it look very natural. However, after it was complete, I felt like it was a bit too toned down. Tim quickly said that he guarantees his work, and that I could come back for a correction. I went back, and my highlights are perfect. I will be back :) read more

I bought the Groupon to 4 Elements after reading very enthusiastic positive reviews about Tim's hair magic - and finally cashed it in last Friday. My preface for this review is that I absolutely love all things beauty. My biggest splurges are at hair salons, Sephora, MAC, and the sort. And I truly believe (and Tim reiterated this as we chatted about how there is nothing wrong with being high maintenance) that you're hair is your most important accessory - you wear it everyday, everywhere!! I've been to going to the great Studio Tilee in Austin for the past three years, and so I was really nervous about trying something new - kind of that blind date anxiety, so to speak. Thankfully, absolutely nothing to worry about at 4 Elements! Service was impeccable, and Timothy is a true hair artist. These are just some of the reasons for 5 stars: - Tim was ready to go right as I walked in, no wait! - Initial15 minute consult, discussing my hair routine and watching him intently study my hair situation, love the thoughtfulness and time spent to identify what would work best for me - He offered a 'vision' for the color and cut, based on the few specifications that I gave him during the consult, but with his professional and artistic input to really make it special - Great conversation, and he knew that I'm really interested in hair styling, so explained in detail what he was doing and why - Color technique was amazing - two very similar colors used to make my deep auburn hair glow from the inside out - He taught me a new technique!! I finally know how to create those loose, beachy waves you see on celebrities - YES! I had bought the Groupon for this place and finally used it for a full leg wax before 4th of July weekend. Iryna is amazing. She was thorough and fast (I'm 5'11 and have had full legs take FOREVER at other places, and those places still missed a bunch of spots), and about as painless as getting waxed can be. She also gave me some good tips on exfoliating my sensitive skin that are keeping my legs looking good over a week later. I didn't walk out with a little gobs of wax anywhere, and I only looked like a plucked chicken for a couple hours. The regular price ($85) isn't cheap, but I feel it's worth it. Be careful when you pull up their website though- it's one of those ones that starts playing music automatically when it opens. My five stars are for Ricky. He is a hair God. If you want to feel like a celebrity or a million bucks, schedule an appointment with Ricky. Prior to finding Ricky a year ago, I had bounced around from stylist to stylist and never truly found someone who I was pleased with. When I decided to donate my hair last year I researched thoroughly and knew that I would come to 4 elements. Originally, my appointment had been scheduled with Tim but at the last minute I was reassigned to Ricky. I have never been so happy with fate! The first time he cut my hair I let him chop almost 9 inches off. It was a very scary thing for me to do because my hair had fallen near my lower back for nearly 8 years. Ricky was wonderful. He was patient with me as I explained my fear and what I wanted from my new cut. He genuinely listened and for the first time I knew I was in good hands. I walked out of the salon that day feeling like a SUPERSTAR. For weeks I received non-stop compliments on both the color (full highlights) and cut that he gave me. It had been awhile since I was back in and I shamefully admit that I had a brief fling with another stylist since my first visit, which turned out to be a disaster. After letting my poorly done trim grow out a bit I knew I had to return to Ricky. My second visit was just as amazing as the first. He is such a wonderful stylist who TRULY knows what he is doing. I have been going to Maggie for 7-8 years to get my hair cut. She's so good - you can tell that she really cares about her work - she's a super cool lady to boot. It's a little pricey, but I just don't trust the SuperCuts folk with my hair. (I have been told by many stylists that my hair is very difficult!) I've been coming to 4 Elements Salon for about 5 years. When I first moved to Chicago, I tried many different salons. I went to some of the most expensive places you can find. I have difficult hair. I color it every five weeks, get blowouts, and need great products. Ricky KNOWS how to color blondes. I love my color and always love the way he styles and cuts my hair. I am one of the most picky people about my hair and assure you, I could not be happier! The decor is gorgeous and comfortable. I've had facials and pedicures here as well. All top notch! The service is great. I'm always offered tea, water, coffee. They are always running specials and I've even had botox here when they bring in outside professionals for botox. Congrats Ashley, now senior stylist! I've been going to Elements for a few years now, and that's saying a lot. I've tended to hop around, but once Ashley started cutting my hair I stuck around. She is terrific, has a wonderful attitude, and is super efficient. I have very fine hair that is not forgiving at all, and she always makes sure it looks the way I want it before I leave (it always does). Plus, no hard sell on the products (I'm a low maintenance gal). The salon itself has a welcoming atmosphere, for both men and women They serve wine in the evenings, and they have a fireplace in the waiting area, although I've never waited for more than five minutes. Today was my first time here and I loved it. I called in the morning and they squeezed me in right away, adjusted my mani/ pedi to "express" so that my appointment would not interfere with the next appointment. This was not a problem for me, I actually thought it was a very considerate of them for the clients. My mani/ pedi was with Sarah and she was really great. I enjoyed every minute chatting with her and she did a great job. The entrance to the salon is where people can get their hair done and then you go through a glass door to the serene spot where im guessing all the other spa services are performed. It was really relaxing, as opposed to places that are all connected and you end up leaving with a headache from all the noise. I will definitely be going back for more services! read more

Gia is my go-to hair girl for cut, color & style! Listen, I would say I am particular when it comes to my hair (some people would call me narcotic). I live for a natural color that looks like it just grew out of your head that way. Its hard to find a colorist who understands exactly the look you are going for, and even harder to find one with the patience to work with you to achieve it. Well, Gia is that girl! She always works with me to get the natural look I'm after- even when I get picky about the most minute detail. She never lets me leave the chair until I am 100% satisfied! I first saw Gia for color correction a few years ago. I went to another salon (big mistake) and my hair was SO Brassy. Gia was able to fix my hair in one sitting- leaving my fine hair healthy and strong to boot. I have long fine wavy hair with a lot of texture and the haircuts I receive from Gia are BY FAR the BEST I've gotten in my life. She understands my texture to always gives me an effortless lazy girl beach hair look. I've also had Gia style my hair for special events- she takes her time to understand the look you are going for, and how to achieve that look with your specific hair texture. I had driven by this place several times so I decided to go on Yelp and check it out. I saw nothing but great reviews. I needed a haircut so why not try it?! It was a great decision and I am now among the many Yelpers raving about 4 Elements. My appointment was with Tim. He's great! He actually explained everything he was doing and why he was doing. I was getting my hair colored and a much needed hair cut. He explained the different types of color options and what each means for my hair. We decided on what was best for me and future hair plans I had. He also showed me how to blow-dry my hair and how to curl it. Neither of which I'd ever officially been shown. It's now much easier to style my hair and takes no time at all. My color turned out great and the cut is awesome. I definitely have a new hair home with 4 Elements. It's not outrageously priced like some of the other salons in the city. I beleive you get more than you pay for. It's small and you get personal attention. I felt like I mattered and so did my hair.
