In this time of racial tension: I have a Jewish and/or Hispanic appearance. Here is how the story goes. The old guy at the station is a bit suspicious and awkward when I approached him for smog service. I pulled my car up, he parks it in the smog station. Then an older white gentleman pulls up and tells me that my car is not ready. Pulls it out and pulls his in for a smog check. Then on top of that he does not want to let me use the Yelp $19.75 deal. He then proceeds to talk to me in short, incomplete sentences like "comes to 28 dollars cash" without any context or explanation, and when I ask for one, he just repeats it. Talks to me like I'm a complete moron and he couldn't care less whether I stay or go. In fact he wishes me a good day when I head off in disgust. The racket the state of California has encouraged with regard to smog tests really p*sses me off. If we are required to get them, which I have no problem with because I'm a huge fan of clean air, it should be regulated. Everyone should pay the exact same fee depending on the size and age of the car. When I called various smog test garages about my 2005 Mini Cooper, I got quotes ranging from $35 - $55. Then I found Smog 4 Less off of The Alameda in Berkeley on Yelp. Finally, Yelp is good for something. When I got the quote over the phone I thought, $28 CASH out the door--no way. There has to be a catch. Nope. Jason got me in and out in a matter of minutes. I will be a repeat customer for sure. Please don't be a typical garden variety Yelp a-hole and ruin it for the rest of us--be sure to bring cash money and good manners. Keep this deal going! read more

Only $28, total, so, what's the catch? Bring cash AND mention that you saw website special of $19.75+certificate fee = $28. Hubby showed up and saw that their sign said $58. He couldn't get the $28 special until he verbally said he saw the special on the website. Since it was an SUV, they explained it would also cost an additional $10, but hubby said that this was not mentioned on the website, so they waived it. So proud of hubby. He was in and out in 10 minutes with brand new smog certificate in hand. CASH ONLY! I stopped by here on a Tuesday afternoon after work to get my smog check. The gas station itself was packed, so I resorted to parking next to the building and in front of the water/air hose area. I let the guy know that I was here and he acknowledged me and said I could keep my car parked there and he would get me in 10 minutes. Next thing I know, he's driving somebody else's car into the shop! I asked him why I had to wait for another car when I was here first, and his response? "Oh wow, I totally forgot about you. Sorry. You can wait here another 30 minutes if you'd like." Basically I wasted 40 minutes of my precious time here. I came back the next day as my renewal was coming up in three days and was a bit assertive in making sure my car would be immediately checked. I stood in the shop and dogged the guy this time. He tried telling me he needed to take his lunch break... at 4 pm?? for thirty minutes. I guess my glare is scary, because I got out of there in 20 minutes with my passed smog test. I have two criteria when it comes to choosing a smog check station... 1. $40 or less for everything 2. free re-test Before going to 4 Less Smog Check, I called ahead to see if they fulfilled both requirements, and sure enough, the guy on the phone reassured me it was $40 if I mentioned the online special and a first free re-test if the test was failed. I proceeded to take my friend's car here for his smog check and I thought the service was decent. I had to wait 30 minutes before my car got its turn, but at least the library across the street kept me occupied. For the most part, it was pain-free and when it was my car's turn to get a smog check, I figured why not take it to the same place? The second visit which was only 1 week after the first visit, was with the same guy (I'm guessing he's the only guy that works at that location). He vaguely remembered me, so I assumed I'd get the same treatment as the first visit, except with a shorter wait time since there was only one car ahead of me and he was just finishing up. Unfortunately, that 5 minute wait was the ONLY GOOD thing that happened. He originally charged me $50 for the smog test and tried to play it off by telling me usually it's $59. When my car proceeded to fail the test, he told me the re-test was NOT free, even though I was told on the phone that the first re-test is free. Eventually he honored the web special ($30 for a smog test +$10 for certificate), but he refused to admit that the re-test is free. I'm never returning here especially since one of the reasons I chose to come here was because of the free re-test! I'd rather go to a place that honors their word. ------------------------------Edit-------------------------------- The manager contacted me shortly after reading my review to offer a refund for the re-test fee. Apparently the person I spoke with on the phone was at the Oakland location and the worker at the Berkeley location had no idea about the free re-test deal. Great! I appreciated that no appointment was necessary so I didn't have to stress over traffic to get there at a certain time. I showed up midday on a weekday and had one customer ahead of me. My Groupon was honored via the barcode on my phone and I was on my way in no time. They take credit card but there's a $5 fee so I'll bring cash next year. I guess Monday morning is the rush hour because when I arrived there was already 3 people there. I stood there trying to figure out who was the one working. Eventually someone approached me and asked, in a mildly exasperated voice, what I needed. He said there was 2 people ahead of me (not including the car currently being tested) and the wait would be at least 30 mins. I didn't have anything else to do so I said it was fine and I'd walk down the street and grab coffee. He told me if I left I would lose my place....Really? You don't have any place to sit or waiting area but you're not willing to let people leave during the 30 minute wait? It wasn't "If you aren't back by the time your car is up you lose your spot" it was "If you leave you lose your spot". So I called up a place down the street, no wait AND he let me leave to grab coffee. So if there is no one there, or if you're looking to take a nap in your car I'm sure it'll be a great experience. I brought my 2010 Honda Fit in for a Star Certified Smog. I received a coupon through "ValPac" which offered the smog for $19.75 with an electronic DMV Certificate for an additional $8.25. Total $28.00. The service man refused to honor the coupon and claimed some bogus excuse as to why he's charging me $38.00 for the smog. The coupon and the "Online Special" is a classic BAIT AND SWITCH. To avoid the hassle of going to another station and shopping around, I had him perform the smog. The $38.00 smog was reasonable, and the service was performed quickly, however, their false advertising is sleezy at best, and worse, a misdemeanor. See: Business and Professions code section 17500. I'm reporting them to the Alameda County District Attorney and the Bureau of Automotive Repair. (BAR). read more

As a business owner-operator myself (and consumer of course), I love these types of businesses -- super small, simple, and straightforward. It's obvious value. Just mention "web special" and be ready to pay $40 cash. No big deal. The location is literally a brick shed next to a small self-serve gas station. The area is a safe and quiet residential neighborhood. It's just one room with one employee! I don't know what the guy would do if there were several cars waiting, but at midday midweek, it was no problem. Two cars can easily park next to the shed. I can easily relate to a one-man operation. He was a nice guy, too. Just come back in a hour if too many others are waiting. Bonus for me was the information he provided. I kept asking questions during his work, and he didn't seem to mind. He knew his stuff. In the end, he gave me pretty much the entire rundown of what my results mean and how it compares. Obviously my car passed and data was instantaneously transmitted to the DMV, but I gleaned more info on % Carbon Dioxide, % Oxygen, Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide, etc. Very educational! This here is essentially a village corner business. In our urban society where cars are vital, it's a relief to find one of these shops "nestled in the woods," and charging the best price in all of the east bay for a friendly, quick, and necessary service. Price fine -he asked me what I'd seen online and accepted the price I stated. His info on the extra charge for the 1995 or older car was pleasantly put and matched what I'd seen on the website. The test was done quickly and methodically. As he saw my battery was in a corroded state he told me how I could do some long term home repairs on the terminals and also topped up the water over the battery plates which he hoped would keep it in better shape in the meantime His attitude was "regular guy" and better than the new ownership place I went to last year. This is a one man show: on my visit he worked hard and quickly but was constantly interrupted by customers asking about where to wait (there's no lineup). Cash only. No ammenities (but there's a full City of Berkeley Library with 24/7 Free Wi-Fi across the street). Unlike other places they do list a price on the website, which is good. Coupons exist for better prices, so if you care, look around. Turns out my right front tire was flat (less than 10 psi), but the guy made no note of it, even though it looked hideously flat on the dynamometer.
