My coworkers LOVE 4 Rivers for their birthday lunches. I've probably ordered from here 4x in the past year. It's always a hit and the prices are fantastic for the amount of food you get. I normally get a mix of the large and small happy herds and then the family platters. I opt to do this for our office of 15+ because then there's more variety than the catering platters. Brisket, sausage, pulled pork, beans, and mac n cheese with the 4 Rivers main bbq sauce are the most liked items typically. Had a bit of a mix-up last time I was there with one of the workers thinking I had add-on coleslaw but they cleared it up and then helped me bring the $260 order to my car. I've been to many 4 Rivers in my life, and since they're a chain, a small chain, but a growing chain nonetheless, you expect a certain amount of standardization in their food, not only visit-to-visit, but also location-to-location. Well, around the pandemic time, quality and standard went down around 4 Rivers, I think we can all agree on that, but in recent years, it seems like they've had a resurgence of quality, and this trip was absolute aces for me. The kids say that, right? Anyway, I came here one evening for dinner. Quaint little counter service place with most of their food on display, people filing down, picking what they want. Pretty large dining room, lots of community tables, with them expecting you to sit down with strangers and strike up a conversation. Service is always top notch. Very friendly folks, people always coming by offering to get you more napkins or a refill on your drink, even the management! Another thing they've been doing lately is having seasonal specials on their menu. That's relatively new, and I actually got one of those items this time, it was some sort of Nashville hot fried chicken tender sandwich. So delicious. Perfectly fried, crispy tender, covered in just enough sauce, on a very toasted roll, sitting only on a bed of green. It was just perfect. I had a side of fried okra, too, and it was nice. Crispy, not oily, not slimy. What else can you ask for? We also split a three meat platter with a couple of sides. Pulled pork, good. It's not saucy, though, so expect to sauce it yourself. Brisket, also good. Not too fatty, just right. What I came here for specifically was to try their Vegan Burnt Ends. Beyond Meat did it again. I swear, if you blind tasted this, you may not guess that they're supposed to be burnt ends, but you would definitely guess that it was meat of some sort. Even if they didn't scream burnt ends, they screamed delicious. I'm excited by the evolution of this technology, letting vegetarians and vegans be able to enjoy in BBQ cuisine without feeling too left out. As for the sides we got to share, the Mac & Cheese was good. Not very toothsome, but very cheesy. Just make sure to sprinkle on some black pepper. But the star of the sides at 4 Rivers has to be their Bread Pudding (Fresh brioche bread baked in a creamy custard and crushed pineapple, cinnamon, and raisins, and topped with homemade doughnut glaze). The baked beans were Luke warm and a little sweet for me. The green beans were luke warm and not as good as I remembered them in the past. Maybe it was the temperature. It might have been the container it was in, but I was hoping for hot, crunchy, fried okra and we forgot to ask for ranch dressing and used our own, but I was a tiny bit disappointed it wasn't as crunchy as I expected. More like moist but still good. The desserts we got were different than what I expected. I couldn't eat all my sliced blueberry white cake with whipped icing and cinnamon. We got there at 6 on a Saturday and the seating was busy, but there was no line. The servers were quick, friendly, great communicators and efficient. Sage and Richard manned the dining room and brought out the Cuban, which took an additional step to prepare. I had the Six-Shooter, my kids had the pork sandwich with sweet potatoes, a Cuban with fries, and my hubs had the Coop chicken tenders and Mac & cheese. Sage and Richard were kind, which made us feel for the first time in a while like we were cared for when eating at a restaurant. They both came at conveniently spaced times to ask how our food was or if we needed anything. They clearly communicated their names, so we could call out in a friendly way if we needed help. It felt personable and like we were joining their family for dinner. A pleasant experience for my family! The tvs were on sports and the music was just right volume for talking to one another, but not quite hearing everyone else's conversation. The drink area was clean and well stocked. I love that 4Rivers puts out other condiments and to go lids or boxes and bags to make leaving easy. The Sweet Shoppe had a lot of the standard fair: chocolate cake, red velvet cake, brownies, caramel Hello Dolly, and Bayou bars. I'd love for 4 Rivers to bring back the regular Hello Dolly, though.
