TL:DR - Not a coffee drinker, mostly here to work remote while in town for the day. Lots of outlets, but located around counter seating with just stools with no backing, so can be hard on your body after a few hours. Tea options were a bit weak. Food, the lox bagel and banh mi, were delicious. Not super loud. Great spot to get a little work done or catch up with someone. Not great if you are spending more than a few hours working and need an outlet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keep in mind, this review is primarily from someone who was here to work remotely and doesn't love coffee. That being said, the non coffee selection was a bit weak, limited to just a few but delicious tea bags. They do have plenty of outlets, which were primarily concentrated around the counters with bar stools, which if you plan on studying or working here for a while is a bit killer on the back. Probably done intentionally which is fine, but something to be aware of. The place never got too loud, even as the morning rush and then lunch rush started coming in. I also wanted to find a spot that had good food options so I could "earn my stay" if you will. I got a lox toast for breakfast, which was very generous with the lox, but not overly so. Great whipped cream cheese, A+ there. The Banh mi was also delicious with excellent meat/veggie ratio. I'd personally love a little bit more meat, but even what it had was still good. I do cringe anytime I see banh mi go for double digit prices though. It's such a basic and cheap staple food within the Vietnamese culture, that it's like charging $10+ for pb&j, but let's be honest, that's not super unexpected either now a days. All in all, I do love the food, and coffee looks fine, so if you just were catching up with a friend, it's a great option. If you are looking to kill a few hours and work this is also a great option. But if you're looking to spend a good day knocking out some work, it may not be the best if you need an outlet. read more

As a local who hasn't spent much time downtown in three years, I was excited to give 40Lbs a try. I love trying new places and my colleague selected it. This was gonna be a solid five starts until you look beyond the surface. First off, they have a great menu for all kinds of tastes! If coffee's not your thing they lots of offerings like tea, chai, etc. i was equally impressed with their food options. I selected the smoky pork belly ban mi while my firmed chose the breakfast burrito. All was rocking smoothly until I noticed our order didn't come with napkins. So, I stepped inside looking for them. They were out. NO NAPKINS. WTF! How does that happen. One of the staff let another staff person know and she said she would find some paper towels. Great, but she was busy doing something and seemed peeved about the request. I kinda don't blame her. She probably had to go into a locked restroom...but not my problem. I didn't cause the napkin shortage. While waiting I noticed they only had one tub overflowing with dirty dishes. The wait was too long so I went back to our outside table sans napkins. We enjoyed our meal and when we went inside to bus our table the tub now horribly overflowed. I left our dirty dishes on the counter. ' While the vibe was good, there seemed to be an underlying tension. I hope they can figure it out because they could have a favorable future. read more

The new location on SW 2nd, just a few blocks from their other location, serves up the same delicious Stumptown coffee and chai in a beau setting. The interior space is stunning! Industrial chic with a live wood bar against the window, lots of steel and gray with a "bar" that is all glass, mirrors and lighting. They way they present the drinks is also visually appealing. . In addition to the coffee and tea beverages, there is a small assortment of baked goods and bagels. The bathrooms are clean. Service is friendly. I pass both locations on my daily walk and neither are ever crowded, but they must have a local following since they just opened the 2nd location. The new location near the World Trade Center is where I stop for my latte on a regular basis. Sometimes I think about it my entire walk, motivating me to keep going knowing this is my destination where a warm, delicious beverage awaits! read more

To say that this place is beautifully designed would be an understatement!! Big fan of this coffee shop. I think I got lucky in coming here on a Monday morning through as there were plenty of open seats and therefore I found a good one with an outlet. There did seem to be a smattering of outlets at best though, so you might have trouble if you come here on a busy day. Wifi worked pretty well. I have trouble staying connected to my work VPN from most coffee shops except Starbucks, and I had no trouble here. My Disney+ connection, however, was difficult to maintain. Couldn't catch up on Mandorlian episodes. Coffee is stumptown, which seems to be the go-to roaster for Portland. I think they said they were brewing their Ethiopian coffee, and it was very good. Through about 48 oz. of it so far. Baristas were friendly and quick. Coffee shop itself is bright - not too spacious but plenty of elbow room between tables. Definitely a good work spot if you can grab a table near an outlet. read more

It's important to note that 40 LBS has two locations, and whether a specific location is open or not varies on the day. So check and see beforehand which location is open that day before going, but it is really only a couple blocks between either place. We ordered the latte with pandan syrup, and I was not super impressed. We tried to strike up a conversation with the worker there on the type of espresso beans used, and it seems like it is mostly sourced from other coffee shops. Which is great, but it was a little difficult to ascertain what exactly we were getting. The pandan syrup was also not much of an addition to the drink. It was not really adding much to the drink, instead giving it a slightly more coconutty flavor that I could have done without. I would probably just recommend opting for a regular latte in the future. The location that we went to also sold food, but the banh mi seemed a little expensive, at $9 a sandwich (definitely have gotten ones around $5-$6 in Portland, which are more the price point I look for). We ended up just getting the drink, so I'm not sure how the food holds up. read more

I will say that at ~11 their pastries were pretty bare - they mentioned that they all had went pretty early. A bit disappointing, but I got some good stuff at the Farmer's Market instead. Super friendly staff and great food! This place was conveniently around the corner from our hotel and had a great vibe. We ordered the Lox toast and it was awesome, priced at about $10 which is normal. I ordered a 16 oz iced oatmilk vanilla latte, not too sweet and balanced really well. My boyfriend ordered a 16oz iced oatmilk dirty chai latte (only 1 espresso shot). The chai taste was on the subtle side, probably would order extra chai next time. My boyfriend still liked it but was hoping the chai flavor would be stronger. Still overall really liked this place and would come back! read more

Mocha was nice and chocolately, hot and served in a ceramic mug, but had a sour edge to it - either the decaf espresso had gone off or I just don't like Stumptown espresso, not sure which. Love love love the design of this place! I take inspiration from here for my own home. The mural on the back wall is absolutely gorgeous and everything is made out of metals, giving it a modern, trendy, industrial look. Somehow they manage to give this place a pretty cozy feel too, especially being industrial style. This is in a perfect location in downtown Portland. I pass by it regularly on my walks. This place definitely has the most unique look out of all coffee shops I've been too in Portland, which is a lot. Eye-catching is for sure to word to describe this place. My almond milk latte wasn't as smooth as I was hoping it'd be-it didn't blend with the espresso nicely. There was a distinction between the almond flavor of the milk and the bold flavor of the espresso-I don't believe the barista properly steamed the almond milk to give it that subtle sweetness. Came in here on a weekday morning and immediately loved the environment, customer service and music playing. They had a wide selection of syrups to add to your latte, so I chose the pumpkin spice syrup with oat milk. Perhaps it was a new employee but my latte had no art, instead it had a bubbly surface that resembled more of a cappuccino. The taste of the pumpkin spice syrup and espresso was quite mild as well. I actually had a hard time even tasting the espresso. Overall I give this a 3 due to the lack of quality in the latte. For $6 it did not meet my expectations. However it might depend on the barista and perhaps other syrups pair well with the latte than the pumpkin spice one. The customer service was so friendly, and the environment itself was very clean and beautiful. I would give this place another try. read more

I like that this coffee shop isn't the standard polished/welded metal and reclaimed wood that you see in so many coffee shops. Instead, they've got a bit more of an industrial feel, with light grey brushed plaster walls and exposed metal girders. There's some small tables up front as well as a few bigger tables along the wall and a large high top in the back. The larger tables are framed of what look to be some smaller i-beams, but more of a wrought iron look than the shiny stainless and glass you see everywhere else. It's not completely free of the standard touches - there's some shelving behind the bar that's reclaimed wood, and there's some succulents and terrariums for decoration - but it still has a unique feel compared to so many of the other "third-wave" coffee shops. The nicest touch was the little custom bamboo tray that drinks come out on. It's clearly been thought out well with two concentric circle recesses on one side (the larger ring fits the teapots, while the smaller one fits the pour over containers), and another circle recess on the right for the actual cup. Doesn't change the product, but that little touch on the presentation makes even a simple pot of tea or a pour-over feel fancy. The assam I had was nice, and the bits of salt on the chocolate chip cookie were a nice touch. Definitely a spot I'd stop in again and recommend to others. read more
