Today I randomly visited 404 restaurant and bar. It is nestled away in a small shopping center with plenty of parking. They have a lot of daily drink specials and a a fun food menu with a lot of cute names. I made a reservation , but we didn't need it. We sat at a high top in the bar and was served by Bianca. She was very attentive and did a great job reviewing the menu. They have brunch with bottomless mimosas for $28, but we order a Prosecco bottle instead and split that. The restaurant had a DJ who was spinning current R&B and hip hop. The music was loud so it did make it difficult to have a conversation without yelling. But we were okay with that. Our food was delicious from start to finish. The catfish was crispy and well seasoned and the grits were very creamy. It was served with a remoulade sauce, but I got that on the side. The fruity pebble waffle was filled with the cereal. The chicken was well seasoned with a henny sauce. They also have chicken wings that are available even though they are not on the menu. This place seems like it will be great for Taco Tuesdays and during football season. So we came on Saturday just before 8pm. First thing I noticed that excited me was a private parking lot (and free)! On the inside was a nice bar area that was about full so we requested a table for 3. Before 8pm and all the booths were taken and only 3 tables were occupied so I think we came at the perfect time. We ordered 3 I'm a Dog cocktails, 1 Panty Droppa, 2 orders of Dime Piece (Honey Hot w/ Lemon Pepper fried hard & Honey Hot All Flats and don't fry mine hard please ). Short story: save your money if you're looking for a nice restaurant with good food. This has become another ATL turned a restaurant into a club casualty . RIP to the restaurant it used to be. I've ordered delivery from here a few months ago and recently went on a Friday night to grab a bite and drink. Ambiance: It was about 7:30pm Friday. It looked like it was about to turn into a club. Typical Atlanta "we turned another restaurant into a club" situation where the servers are dressed half naked like it's the club. Food: I couldn't eat it and it was misrepresented on the menu. When I've eaten here in the past I've ordered fish and chips and the lobster roll. The menu looked totally different and I noticed new items that weren't on there before. --This time I ordered 1/2 oysters. I was too scared to get them raw because of how the place had changed so I just got steamed. They came out with no oyster vinegar sauce, horseradish or cocktail sauce. I asked for all this and the servers looked like they didn't know what I was talking about so I just asked for hot sauce. --ordered the fish and chips and asked the server if the fish was cod. She said yes. The food comes out and I could tell immediately it was not cod. I took a bite and almost gagged. I think it was tilapia and it was gross. I told the server and she took it back and asked if I wanted something else. --replaced the fish and chips with a lobster roll and things just got worse. I'm not sure what kind of seafood or meat was in the roll but it definitely was not lobster. 1) I've had the lobster roll from here in march and it was nothing like what they served me during this visit. 2) I know what lobster LOOKS and TASTES like and this was not lobster! It was little round balls of something that tasted like fish mixed with shrimp. I took a few bites and was disgusted. I'm thinking maybe it was imitation lobster. The dish was $44 I gave my fries to another customer at the bar. --I ordered a red wine that tasted old and they served it in a champagne glass. nuff said. --servers: the fact that they were mostly dressed half naked was my first clue that serving food was not this place's priority anymore. My server was ok. She was putting in effort and making the best out of what looked like a bad career decision. She was new and honestly tried. She's the reason for the extra star. There was a guy with long loc twists and not much hair on top that was just checked out and ignoring customers. He really seemed to be causing my server more stress than helping her. He was on his phone most of the time. The bill: they charged a 20% gratuity without telling me so I ended up paying $75 for one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. I'm a very generous tipper and usually tip 25% but in this case I felt robbed and like I was cheated. We would rate the platter wings "okay" or 3/5, the bang bang shrimp "good" or 4/5 and the spinach and artichoke dip "could've been better" or 2/5.
