Okay, I get it. I totally see why people love to hate 4100 to its very core, but even after many drunken nights, embarassing past drunken night recollections, semi-awkward hangings out with old friends and perhaps a parking ticket or two, I can't help but to love this place. I LOVE IT! My first few visits to 4100, I went with my friend who's a true blue Sunset Junction resident and Burner (as in, Burning Man devotee). I couldn't think of a more appropriate place for us to hang out for a drink or few. Yes, it looks like a harem in there. Yes, there are hipsters aplenty (If you haven't noticed, you're in Silverlake for Jimminy Krispies' sake!) But even at its most crowded, I've never been able to find a spot in the bar or a booth for my party. Cause really...the place seems to be great in creating dark, mysterious corners in which you can hide and chill with your peeps. They've got your standard cool beers on tap, which those are is for you to decide (there's at least Stella) as I haven't had a Cold One in the last few times I've been there. The main reason being they have a pretty impressive scotch whisky shelf. I find plenty of enjoyment witnessing the uninitiated whisky drinker buy a round and have "what she's having" and then scowl as they take a sip of something that "smells of decomposing tire." Yes, that is Laphroaig, and I like it. Jealous? No? More for me. Also take note: They have a parking lot. That's free. In the Junction. Who cares if it's small? It's big enough for a 4-unit apartment complex, this is prime real estate. It may be best for those with lukewarm feelings to come early at opening to get free parking and beat the crowd. Maybe you'll find me there at the far part of the bar closest to the whisky. How do you feel about Geni bottles? 4100 feels like a Geni bottle (I would know, I've been in plenty). Curtains, candles, dark lighting, red and pink undertones, Captain Tony Nelson. Well, a lot of shadowy dudes that could possibly be Captain Tony Nelson. It's super dark, pretty laid-back, and not too loud. The music is pretty eclectic. I never see anyone at the jukebox, so unless it's playing randomly, I'm not sure how to account for the Runaways, Biggie, and Elvis playing one right after the other. I'm no hipsterologist, but the word is this place is hipster. In the words of a dear friend, "It's so hipster it makes my hips hurt." Can't say I've ever really had a bad time here. That may also be because I only hit this happenin spot during the week nights as I tend to get a severe allergic reaction to anymore than one white belt wearin' hipster in my 5 foot radius. The drinks are drinks and it is true that if you befriend the bartender you will be taken care of. I suggest the stephy tip method for best results: First drink =$3 tip Second drink=smile when you realize it worked and the drink is either free or cheaper, then tip $2 By the third or fourth drink, you will be hooked up, but just remember to keep tipping at least $2 per free drink. I am an Angeleno, which means 1) I don't have legs to walk and 2) I don't tolerate cold weather. If I have to drive around for over a half hour to find decent parking on a Saturday night, then so be it. Sometimes, I wish I had a pumpkin carriage like that Cindy chick. This is probably a good bar if you are trying to get laid: drinks are cheap, [most] people don't smell, the jukebox has good tunes, and it's dark enough to find a prince underneath that beastly front (and chest hair). The room is a big circle, so if you catch sight of the last heart you broke/tried to eat, you can easily avoid him/her by moving along to the other side of the bar. Indian tapestries hang low from the ceilings, making me half expect Aladdin to suddenly pop out of the laughing Buddha's butt to "show you the world...shining, shimmering, splendid!" I went with couple friends who came visit from Sacrmento just to chill for the night, the "bald" bartender turns freaking rud when we tried to order the 3rd rund and told us "YOU GUYS DIDNT TIP ENOUGH. I AM DONE WITH YOUR BULLSHIT" (FYI we tip $1for $5beer and $2for $7mix) wtf was that!? the last time i checked with my math that's more the 20%tip. how much is he asking for?? Came here on a Saturday night to celebrate my 25th birthday. I contacted Elizabeth the bar manager ahead of time to see if I could reserve a both or two for about 20 people. She responded back promptly and was able to accommodate my party. We arrive at the bar and it wasn't terribly crowded which I liked. The atmosphere was very relaxed and chill. The music from the jukebox was slightly loud but not too bothersome. I find Elizabeth and she leads me to a huge section that she had reserved for my party. She asked me if it was my birthday to which I said yes and she offered to take care of me and just to find her when I was ready. Needless to say, I never made it to the bar because everybody kept buying me drinks. The drinks (according to my friends) were very reasonable. This place has become our local go to bar. No cover here. Brooklyn, the bartender we have the joy of getting 90% of our visits is super sweet... Knows our drinks of choice, remembers our conversations from last visits, and really treats us like a friend rather than just a $tip. Decor and ambiance are comfortable. Good jukebox. This place is less pretentious than other bars around - I'm not putting them down, we love going there also, but we're just not always in the mood for the scene. 4100 is the closest thing to a local dive bar in our walking perimeter. Additionally, they've got some great, consistent street vendors. Rich is doing great BBQ on Fridays and Saturdays (the guy's just about as nice as it comes, makes his own sauce, which is awesome), and the tamale guy during the week. The bar allows you to bring the food in, so support some local food smiths and buy it up. Overall, for a good time, check out 4100. read more

So, not only is this place WALKING DISTANCE from my house (thannnk you silverlake), but every time i've gone, i've stumbled home absolutely obliterated. The first time I went, the bartender Brandon bought me 3 Guinness and 2 shots of Maker's Mark to welcome me to the neighborhood. I'm pretty sure I paid for one drink. The NEXT time, my roommate and I walked down, and Brandon was there again. He remembered me, came out from behind the bar and gave me a hug and proceeded to buy me annnother two shots of whisky. I was really not excited about coming here. I thought, 'oh great, another whatever bar with the same ol' music and same ol' decor.' It was, but it managed to redeem itself in the end. My whiskey sour tasted like watery whiskey, but once I got over that it was a poorly mixed drink, I realized that it was a seriously strong one. Still, at $9 it better have been. We managed to snag a couple of stools at the bar right by the speakers but it wasn't too loud to talk and despite being full at 11pm on a Saturday night, wasn't cramped or meat market-y so yay for that. It got the job done-2 drinks later I was good to go drunk, my mood was a happy one and my hangover has now been quelled with some coffee and oatmeal, so while it's very unlikely I will choose to come back, if do happen to I end up here I'll know I'm still in for a fine night. read more

Pretty solid bar with a nice look to it. Pillows, draped fabric, jewels, it's like drinking in a giant genii bottle. With NONE OF THE RISKS associated with actually drinking in a genii bottle. Trust me, fella, Geniis do not take kindly to that kind of shit. They get you in there and then try to trick you so you take their place... or something. I DID NOT stick around to get the details, I ran out of there so fast... Uh, yeah, sorry.... Not too pricey, decent bartenders and just dark enough around the edges. I had just emerged from the inexplicably urine-soaked, secret women's restroom after indulging myself with a healthy key-full of cocaine. The room is dark and somewhat musty, adorned with tapestries hanging from the ceiling that give you the feeling that you're in the middle of a Middle Eastern bazaar at the height of Eid al-Fitr. But you're not. You're in Silver Lake, surrounded by yuppie hipsters with jeans that cost more than your car, and the only thing keeping you sane is the smell of freshly cooked bacon wrapped hot dogs. Confidence brimming from the exquisite sweetness of the cheap whiskey and over-cut cocaine mixture, I approached the bar. The one good thing about any hipster-haunt is that there is no shortage of beautiful women, whose sole fashion discretion seems to be "I like this, but I want more holes." This, you can agree with. I saddle up to the bar and flag down the stunningly gorgeous bartender, who looks like a more approachable Anne Hathaway with sultry lips that you can just imagine watching as they slowly descend your torso, stopping with every inch to give you a spine-tingling peck. But she's not having it; no, not tonight. Tonight is not for the bartender. Tonight, it is for Maximilien. I look right and cast my glance on your run-of-the-mill Silver Lake-ian transplant. She grew up in Minnesota (of course) and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting (huge surprise) but is working at Color Me Mine to pay the bills (that actually is a shock, and I hate clay). I'm bored, instantly. The cocaine buzz is falling flat and I need another drink. I order my scotch on the rocks and look left, whereupon I cast my gaze a beautiful, mid-30s African queen. She is as stunning as her hair is frizzed, and she is alone. Her name is Mikaela and she's having a rough night, what with the break up and all. She tells me about her kid. I tell her I want to be inside her. There's a glimmer in her eye that tells me that isn't far from happening. We leave, that moment, barely getting into a taxi before my manhood is out, flapping in the wind, gently being caressed by her smooth, tiny hands. I look back for a brief moment, partly to remember where I need to have the taxi take me after I sneak out of this stranger's house in the middle of the night, and partly to whisper a sweet and earnest "thank you" to the 4100. read more

The 4100 is part of a Silver Lake triumverate that includes Cha Cha Lounge and Good Luck Bar, where plush, cushy booths, dark and eclectic design and good music are the norms. On my last visit to 4100, I was a bit taken back by the overwhelming bleach smell as I entered. This smell always makes me think immediately of how appallingly "like a bar" a place must smell each morning before the cleaning crews arrive. While 4100 is incredibly cozy and a great place to bring a date or hang with a group of friends, it definitely has a subliminal aura of a room that probably doesn't look so snazzy when the lights are on full. But that doesn't take away from it's charm, in fact, it may even make it more endearing. The jukebox is great-- always a plus, but unfortunately, last time I was there the music was just a tad bit too low. Also, parking can be a bitch if you're not lucky enough to score one of the 8 or so spots in 4100's triangular lot. read more

When you pull up to this place you might find yourself questioning "why the hell did I drive to this small and beat up-old bar?" The parking lot can't fit many cars so then you have to figure out where else to park. You start to think "aww man I hope the pictures weren't lying". You walk up to the bar and see two red velvety curtains closing off the view to the inside. Thinking you might walk out as soon as you walk in based off of just the outside view of this place, the vibe, and the fact that you had to park somewhere else. But alas, you open the red curtains and seem to walk into a different world. You enter into drapery hanging from the ceiling, mirrors on the wall, two large windows out looking the city (not quite the view but I like the idea), chandeliers hanging all around, and the bar placed right in the center. So let me get to the experience. We started off with $7 shots of fireball, fuck with that. My friend and I ordered some drinks, the usual stuff, but he wanted something special for his girlfriend. We asked the bartender what whiskey drink he recommended and he says a whiskey sour. I'm like nah, that's not different because I have those all the time, but he says not the way we make em' here. My friend agrees to try one, and bada bing bada boom the night was good. His girlfriend enjoyed it, my girlfriend liked it too, and they both aren't into whiskey. The rest of the night we put some down ass songs on the jukebox, bought another round of shots and just chilled. On our way out we stopped by the hot link guy, I believe his name is Rich, he let us sample some of his chicken and immediately we got convinced to get a BBQ hot link on a hot dog bun. The guy was cool and just made us feel like friends. Pretty much, this place cracks and that's why we're heading back next weekend for my girlfriends bday. It is a hipster joint, but to tell you the truth I didn't see any that night and I didn't feel out of place like some people usually report in their reviews about these types of places. Easily one of my favorite watering holes in Silver Lake. This place gets crowded late night, especially on the weekends. If you're on a date show up early to grab a booth in the back. You will find mostly jovial groups of hipsters and young professionals at this neighborhood watering hole. The red silk canopies and the dim lights create a dark yet sexy vibe while the long central bar provides an armrest for the packed crowd. Boisterous groups of people also huddle around tables or lounge on the leather sofas to indulge in libations and conversation. The jukebox plays everything from hip-hop to indie rock. Usually standing room only after 11pm. Great for dates and small groups. read more

This place is my sexy little cave. Low ceilings, low lighting, heavy velveteen curtains and tiny glow lanterns with back to back bars...what's not to love? They have Blue Moon on draft for $5 and they give you fresh orange slices to go with your beer which is the way it is supposed to be with this beer. Of course the jukebox is a-ma-zing. I am in love with LA just for the amount of great music on their jukeboxes. They played one of my all time favorite songs, The Velvet Underground's "Oh Sweet Nothin" which is a less common song and which made me so incredibly happy. The location is between Silver Lake and Los Feliz so a very hip area. Parking as usual is limited but hey, they do have a small parking lot. Lots of cute guys. I was in here many months ago and had a wonderful time. I loved the crowd, the atmosphere, and the vibe! If I lived in this neighborhood I'd totally stop in here all the time for a pint. This place seriously looks like it's going to be a Chatch bar, from the outside. Inside, however, it's gorgeous. The bar itself is beautiful (and goes 360 degrees in the center of the club), with seating around it and on the edges. Kind of an East Asian ecclectic decor which isn't as cheesy as it sounds. However: way too loud (especially for what they were playing), drinks aren't particularly strong or cheap, getting drinks takes a long time, and once, I was completely ignored by the bartender for 20 minutes, while trying to get a drink. So much so that the door guy, passing by, noticed and tried to flag the bartender down for me. Which, you know, that was nice. But at that point, I was annoyed. So, drink experience level: two stars. Easily one of my favorite bars in Los Angeles. It's right next to the Jiffy Lube, and it's usually not to hard to find parking nearby. Come on a weeknight and you'll probably get a spot in the lot. The decor is a little over the top and sometime conflicting (check out the lights above the bar). But do I care? No! I'm there for a drink. And wow, do they ever pour a good. Let me first say I always get cocktails here. But the few beers they have on tap are all winners. I stick to basic here. Scotch and ginger, bourbon coke, gin n tonic. Try it, and watch them when they make it. All killer, no filler here. You'll think they forgot to leave room for your fizzy mixer, but that's just how they do it here. A splash of coke is enough. Stay vigilant looking for a place to sit. It'll pay off. Despite the crowd, it's a big enough place to find a spot, if only a part of a couch. And once you've got it, park yourself for a night of well-priced, strong drinks and a really great juke box. They have a DJ sometimes,too. Just for kicks, try going really early or on a weeknight. 4100 Bar is an isolated dive bar, so if you're looking for a night to remember, this isn't it. But if you're just trying to meet up with friends, chill and drrankkk, then here we go! I visited for a friend's birthday. We arrived around 10:30pm on a Saturday night. The bar is not really located within walking distance to much of anything else, so once we finally found a parking spot about a block away, we could only hope for the best. There was no line and the man who checked my ID was friendly. After walking through two sets of drapes, I found myself in a dark, loud, crowded room - quite a small room at that. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this place was really a laid-back bar, with a bunch of laid-back people who just want to drink and hang out. I didn't necessarily feel like I fit in, but this didn't seem like the type of crowd that cared enough to judge. I can always appreciate that. When you walk in, the first thing you see is the bar. This is because the bar basically takes up most of the place - okay, I guess dancing is a no. It is located in the center of the small room. The counter is an oval shape that runs around the entire bar. The crowd gathers along the perimeter of the room, where there is only standing room for those who didn't get here earlier enough to grab one of the couches. The seats are comfortable - that is if you can grab one - highly unlikely if you get there late. The Drinks are decently priced. I don't remember how much I paid for my drink, but I do remember not making a fuss over it - and being the frugal individual that I am, that's a good sign. Overall, good dive bar. Walk into the room, note the darkness, or maybe its just dim not dark, note the hanging curtains, of the indian theme, the tables around the outside, the low couches... THEN let the unending attempt to walk around begin. While the large round bar is cool is some respects, it also really really stupid. Despite having a solid 100 feet of bar to possibly belly up to, when its crowded, you can never, AND I MEAN NEVER stop the incessant pushing, and sliding past people just to find a seat. With limited space between bar and seats around the outside, you are doomed to stand in the way of someone. Which is REALLY annoying. I could probably fill a book with all the good things I have to say about 4100. But I wont bore you with all the great things, just the main ones! I have lived in Los Angeles for 4 years and have been to many many bars, and this by far is my favorite. I just started going there in Feb 09, and wish I had knew about it sooner. Its in a great location just off of Sunset/Santa Monica in Sunset Junction neighborhood. Yes this is a pretty typical 'hipster' area, but believe me 4100 doesnt have that 'arrogant, i only listen to indie rock, im really a trust fund brat' vibe. The door guys are all fun and easy to talk with, and the bartenders are just the same. Ralph, Diana and Brandon are the best. Once they get to know you and see that you arent a douchebag, they are really fun to be around and definitely a good looking bunch! Drinks are fair priced and definitely made strong. There is a great jukebox playing artists like Phoenix to Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra to Weezer, Def Leppard to Biggie, and many many more great artists/songs. There isnt a cover to get in and the place is huge. The bar is circular and set in the middle of the place. So you can order a drink basically wherever you are. The decor is pretty cool, lots of booths and lounge seats with eastern indian/morrocan type fabrics hanging from the ceilings and walls. It also has a HUGE Buddah in the back of the bar. Sit at the bar in the back of the place to get the best view of everyone coming in. The crowd is pretty diverse, hipsters, bikers, celebrities- John Mayer, Kirsten Dunst, and Kiefer Sutherland like to hang out here. But you will probable never know it because this place is dimly lit and no one fusses over stars here. And I mean DIMLY LIT. This place is dark. Lots of little candles though. Week nights are best to go, its not to crowded and it feels more like the bar from cheers. All the regulars are their and its a great place to just chill. Weekends on the other hand get packed quickly, so be sure to get there early. Parking is Free, with a lot next door and pleny of street parking. But on weekends you may have to park a block or two away, but its no big deal. All in all this is a great bar, and one to check out for sure. read more

As a person who doesn't frequent too many "dive bars", I don't know how much you should actually take this review to heart. Came here after dinner to get a drink. The parking lot is REALLY small and trying to find street parking can be pretty difficult, but we happened to snag a spot in the parking lot after driving around for a few minutes. The decor is pretty cool. Although it was pretty hard to see because it is insanely dark in there! They had a Moroccan type theme to the place and pretty much everything is red. The bartender was super nice. He was attentive and gave us time to make up our minds. I wasn't too excited about the fact that they don't have a drink list... I tend to be indecisive and usually a drink list helps. It also gives me the opportunity to be brave and try something new... Yet I stuck with a traditional Grey Goose and soda. The drink was good, but how excited can you get about a vodka/soda? The bathroom, SO SMALL! It's pretty much a 5x5 cell. Oh and the ladies room door had a broken lock. So you can imagine the anxiety I felt trying to get my business done without someone opening the door and exposing me! The music is really loud, but it didn't really bother me. There is a jukebox (which is cool) but it leaves you open to having to listen to some drunk dude's Guns n Roses play list (which is not cool). We left after our first drink. We were the only patrons in the bar for a few hours and Travis kept that charm and the booze comin'! He humored 4 loud girls that don't get out much and made us laugh, bombed our selfies and made a good drank! The crowd was great too. The slowly took over our very private feeling bar after a while. Sexy. Sure, sometimes it is packed and it does smell a little like pee and urinal cakes on one side of the bar, but it is dark, sultry and kind of looks like a genie bottle or a Moroccan den of lust. The music selection is great, and that in itself goes a long way with me - some of the jukeboxes in LA are seriously doing a disservice to the awesomeness of jukebox culture, but this one has amazing music and most of the time people make some awesome choices. For a bar on a Friday night, I appreciate that it wasn't over-packed. Luckily we found a place to sit when we got there. Got a Jack and Coke and it was pretty good (not watered down). The ambiance was good. Nice decoration hanging from the ceiling. Met new people. The parking lot was small. Luckily, we were able to street-park a block away after we saw someone leaving (though we had to go around the block a few times to finally find parking). I know it's a bar, and super hip and and "LA" but it's still a service industry. Be nice to your customers. Also, their bookkeeping needs to leave the stone age, and join us here in the 21st century. I was planning to meet two of my boy friends from Orange "somewhere in Hollywood" on a Tuesday night. They called me saying they were going to go into Akbar, and is it a gay bar? "YES! It is! You'll probably want to find a different bar..." So they stumbled upon 4100. "Missy, is 4100 a gay bar? I think we're gonna go there." I did a "Find" command on 4100's Yelp page and no mention of "gay" or "lesbian" so I assumed it was not. The boys got there and described it as a "bicurious bar"--all the boys were paired off with other boys! When I arrived I noticed the same thing, but since it was a Tuesday I figured oh well, I'll just play it cool. Parking was super easy. There's plenty on the street. Inside is...Moroccan themed? would that be the correct descriptor? It was totally unexpected. The bartender was super cute...Rockabilly pompadour. I wanted to just eat him up. The crowd was relaxed and sophisticated. Overall good vibe. read more

I think it's pretty much known for its Buddha statue in the back. That was the first thing I remembered. I saw that statue on Entourage and now can happily say that I'm somewhat hip. I like the lounge area in the back if you can get a seat. Never paid attention to the jukebox which I will sure to next time. I usually go on weekends. It gets somewhat loud so you gotta shout to talk and getting a drink sometimes does take awhile. I like the casual atmosphere of the place. read more

I've been drunk at this bar more than any other bar in L.A. Staff is cool and polite, the bartender girls are hot --- which always adds to the whole eve xperience --- and this bar probably has the coolest juke box ever. Oh damn, was I there last night ... ? read more

This place is such a mixed bag. You've got the middle-eastern bomb shelter aesthetic going on which is pretty cool. They have a good selection of scotch, and some nice beers on tap (Stone). Jukebox has a decent mix of classic rock and indie hits, although it could really use some Tom Waits. But there is such a preponderance of douchiness, not only from the clientele but sometimes from the bartenders, who often seem to merely tolerate your presence unless you're a personal friend or complete fox, that drinking here is often more effort than it's worth. The bouncers are friendlier here than the bartenders, go figure. I really want to like this place, as it's around the corner from me. On the weekdays it's got more locals; I've had a few good conversations there, and a nice bit of makeout with a wispy dream in the dark recesses. And just like that girl, the pleasures of this place seem fleeting. Strikes and gutters. read more
