It helps explain why friends rarely come here or leave early, and why the overall atmosphere can feel unwelcoming rather than relaxed or inclusive. I come to 4bs often and usually have a positive experience. Unfortunately, there is one bartender in particular, that I've never had good interactions with. Purely based on his TERRIBLE attitude. I never learned his name but the bartender with glasses and white streaks in his facial hair, should be fired. He is extremely unwelcoming, rude, makes shitty drinks, and the cherry on top he assaults women while he's on clock. He threw a FULL BEER in my face... no matter how drunk a patron is, you should NEVER resort to assault. If you're going to be a bartender and you can't control yourself from assaulting people on shift then maybe you should find a different job that you don't hate. Completely unprofessional behavior, and I'm very disappointed that the management doesn't care that their employee clearly can't control his aggression towards women. I know this place as 4B's. I was always curious about it and finally visited on a Saturday night for karaoke. It's a great dive arcade bar with pool tables and lots of games. Service was great, karaoke was fun and people here were so friendly! Some of the games I thought could have been cheaper ($1 for pinball is kind of steep). It sounds like they're now owned by the same folks who own Icebox so definitely give it a shot! read more

Free pool all day on Mondays and Thursdays. Large lot outside for parking. 5 pool tables with an assortment of arcade games. STOKED they have skeeball and you can track multiple player scores. Cheap drinks and surprisingly good bar food! LOVE that the fries are seasoned with Johnnys seasoning. There's an electric jukebox that you can pick your own music. Major fan of whoever was playing country all night. This place has a lot of character, so don't judge the book by its cover. One hell of a hidden gem! read more

We found a cool bar in the neighborhood we were staying at on our trip to Seattle this past summer. Justin, Bryan and I decided to walk around and check out few places, since it was the 4th of July many places had been closed but this place was open and so we had some fun.. Pool tables, TVs, Pinball and other games just what we needed to wind down from our busy day. The boys tried several of the local brews, seems they have been trying every new one they could find made in Pacific Northwest. Myself I do like beer but had already tried 3 from different places we went too so kinda wanted my old faithful (bourbon), how lucky was I to see they had Makers :) We spent several hours playing Pinball and Pool talking and meeting locals from the area, had a really nice time.. I recommend anyone check them out very friendly staff and a great place to just chill. read more

read: I've come to this bar now twice in the last 6 months and both times when I cashed out my tab I left my standard 25% tip and when I seen my credit card statement via text the bartender or owner changed the tip amount and charged my card almost double. The first time it happen I was charged $20 more and thought this might be a mistake and decided to let it go. Went there again this last weekend and they stole from me again. The person at the counter this time was a white guy in his mid 30 to late 30's had a scruff beard look. Friday lad but it's all a show. This is a glorious (and pretty gross) dive bar. If you look under the pool tables you will see that no one has ever vacuumed underneath them. It's spacious enough that you don't feel packed in, even when it gets busy. Lots of pool tables, pinball machines, big buck hunter and beautiful old brick on the interior. Is the food good? Meh. But if you're looking for a dive bar from the days of yore, this is a great spot. I personally love crummy dive bars and as the tech boom has taken over Seattle, they are fewer and further between. To me, this place is a hidden gem (with parking, to boot). Definitely a better place to go with a group who wants to shoot some pool than a date. read more

Something bad is going on with this place. I have been stopping in every few months for an amazing burger and strong drink for a few years now. Always great service and food. Now, something has gone horribly wrong. A couple months ago I stopped in and placed my usual order. I was given a crazy strong drink and told the cook was running late but would be here any moment. So I sat down with my drink. 30mins later I told the bartender he had to water down my drink because I had no food. He said he didn't know what was going on and that the cook is never late like this. I waited because I had a buzz on. Another 20mins and I had my burger. Today I stopped in again at 1PM. Walked past the normal bartender in the parking lot as he was chatting with friends. The woman behind the bar gave me serious attitude from the moment I approached. I ordered a drink and asked for a lunch menu. She replied fumbling "the kitchen doesn't open until 3PM." I stopped her from pouring my drink and said "I can't drink if I can't eat." She threw the ice back into the bin, turned her back and walked away. Is it legal to serve hard liquor and no food? Recently celebrated a girlfriend's birthday here and had a great time. Reasonably priced pitchers of beer and a surprisingly delicious veggie burger. (I had low expectations and was very hungry, but it was quite tasty...) If you accept this for what it is... a dive bar with tons of bar games... this is a great option. If you're looking for classy craft cocktails and an upscale environment, try another spot. I'm really not sure what the Four B's actually stand for but it could be any number of things: Bar, Beer, Basketball, Buckhunter, Billiards, Burgers, BBQ, Booze... And, since I'm all about the dog-friendly lets add another... BABIES (of the furry variety). Yes, Four B's in Fremont/Ballard (is that Frellard or Ballmont?) is DOG-Friendly. I verified this with the bartender and have photographic evidence, but have not yet brought my own pups to the Four B's. It's on my TO-DO list. I would give 5 stars, except the method for ordering drinks (form a big long line that crowds the main hang-out area, rather than standing around the bar per usual) just doesn't make any sense. They could stand to have a few new balls thrown in there and the score reset though. They have big buck and skeeball too which are also classics. I walked in and was immediately aware of being the only female in the entire bar. I quickly scanned throngs and throngs of men for a another female..somewhere...AH! One by the video poker machine. I was afraid it was like, men's night and I missed the memo. I also saw another one playing pool, so phew. 3 women, 40-50 men. Still weirded out. Did they all come on a big bus together? Is this a stop on the world's biggest Bachelor Night? They all dressed similar and drank pitchers of beer, all 50 of them. Damn right I counted them all. I sipped my drink and observed the anthropological wonderment. I wish this review had more important and helpful information for you all. Here's the deal. The bar advertised a 3 dollar special for Fat Tire today. The only reason that I purchased Fat Tire was because of said special. When my girlfriend closed out her tab, she was charged 4.75 per beer. They did not honor their 3 dollar special, because they said it was no longer valid, regardless of their advertising! All we wanted for them to do was honor the special price. Is that so difficult? Isn't it their fault? Apparently not. I promptly got the managers information and personally erased the falsely advertised special from the chalkboard. If you want to drink here, ask about the specials before you order. Apparently this place is called "The 4 B's". I was not hip enough to know that until last night. My friend and I ended up here after a debate over what to do with our night. It was within walking distance of his house therefore it won out above all else. Ballard Grill & Ale House is a bar for blue collar folks. It has a slight wannabe sports bar feel but mainly its a place to get cheap beer after a day spent working at the Locks. There are plenty of pool tables, darts, a modern jukebox, Golden Tee, Addams Family pinball machine (my personal favorite), and a safari shoot out game. On a Sunday night it was empty, just the way I like my bars. No wait for any of the games or for a drink. Food is served here but I have yet to try it. I have no doubt the menu is filled with greasy deep fried foods. The way it should be at a bar like this. Ballard Grill & Ale House is a simple bar for simple folks. No need to impress anybody here. I would have given Four B's Four Stars for the entrainment value alone of watching the bouncer do a couple sets of push ups in the parking lot to GET PUMPED before his shift. Went out here with a bunch of friends for my boyfriend's birthday celebration and we had a BLAST. Everything was top notch from the friendly service (our waitress was great!) to the super strong drinks. The pear cider was fantastic and the food was above average for bar food. Portions were gigantic! We played lots of billiards, tons of songs on the jukebox, and had an all-around great time. We were pretty wild and rambunctious, but they put up with our craziness, which was much appreciated. This place is dubbed the "4 Bs," but I've still yet to figure out what it stands for. The 4Bs (no I don't know why it's called this) is a classic dive bar. Not in the sense that it's a great place to get in a fight, just that it's a more mellow basic bar. The decor is a little faded and dirty, the uniforms are apparently t-shirts and jeans and the prices are cheap. You've got your basic hoops game, electronic darts and a surprising number of pool tables. There's also the extra joy of pull tabs behind the bar. Beer is cheap although I probably wouldn't try any sort of spirits other than a shot. I decided to stick with Rolling Rock while my companion went with a martini. There were some odd floaters in the martini and it was sort of pungent. Reminded me of the times when we'd have drinks at a bar back in Cleveland that came in dirty glasses and smelled faintly of gasoline. In the gentrified city that Seattle has become- this place is one of the true old dive bars. No frills or fanciness here- the booze is cheap and the pours are strong, the service can be a tad surly, the regulars are an older group, and the bathrooms have the level of filth you'd expect in a place like this- complete with communal pissing trough in the men's room! They offer a burger and fries (which I've heard is quite good) for only $6. Their draft beer selection is surprisingly large. I recently visited and they had some Oktoberfest beers leftover (it was November). They were being offered at a "kill the keg special" of $2 per pint. Outstanding! They do have a couple of Golden Tee machines, Big Buck Hunter, Skee Ball, and a handful of pool tables. I LOVE IT. I hope this place never changes and that it retains its old world charm. There aren't many true dive bars like the 4Bs left around town- which I think is a damn shame. read more

The first time I came here, we had a blast playing pool and drinking good beer. The people are friendly and cool, music is excellent, beer is always delicious...my kind of bar. The food always looked good and we'd heard positive reviews, so on our second visit, our friend (a local) suggested we head back to the 4 B's for a brew and a bite. Sounded good to us...I was anxious to try the food. It was tough to pick something from the alluring menu, but I suggested that my husband and I split the nachos, which were delicious! My cider and the guys' beers were extra crisp and tasty, too. It wasn't until later that night that we realized we had food poisoning. Our friend didn't have any nachos and he was fine, but my husband and I were vomiting all night. I really didn't want to blame the nachos, but this was the first time we'd eaten together that day, so it seemed the likely culprit. I'll go back to this place because it's a great pub, but I won't eat the nachos again, no matter how yummy they were. :( read more

I used to go here with my friend Joel after a hard day touring the thrift shops of the Aurora Ave corridor, play 70's glam rock on the juke, and get my ass kicked at pool. We had something different from the menu every time and it always hit the spot. That was over a year ago, when they had the divey laminated cafeteria menus in fine print, about 30 different burger combinations, and some great fish-n-chips. Last week I got a culture shock. Tri-fold Denny's style menus. No peanut butter & pickle burger. Electronic jukebox? I has a sad. On the upside: the bacon & blue cheese burger was still great, the onion rings still gave me heart burn (as all good rings should), and the same 2 dudes with dirty hair and trucker hats with real grease on them were still at the bar. Glad to see not everything has been so-called "improved". I hope they're not trying to draw the uppity-er patronage over to our beloved dark side. Because seriously, if I wanted to hang out with people who enjoy paying $6 for a pint and eating hummus instead of nachos, then I'd just walk across the street to Hale's. Or shoot myself. Visit Tazz next door, serving up classy cajun cocktails at Le Bon Ton Roule, and last I saw, Fred could be spotted in the kitchen at Zadya Buddy's on Sundays and Mondays at least. Not sure what happened to the rest of the gang but I'm pretty sure I'll never be back here without them. It absolutely pains me to write this update as once upon a time (see my previous review), this place was practically my home away from home. Smells like pee, bathrooms are so unclean, I don't really want to try any food here. I've been to this place many, many times over the past 20 years. I have seen owners, bartenders and "management" come and go. The recurring theme is, great strong drinks & ample parking. Hint: Strong drinks do not always equate to well balanced good drinks. It does however equate to commonly over served customers. Ample parking is fantastic, so you can leave your car when you are over served, to find that it was broken into overnight. Lol Having said all that.... I love this dive bar, bloody pool tables and all it's a great filthy place to hang on a Sunday afternoon when you are avoiding the hosh, posh church going Sunday crowd and daylight! I've been eating at this place for decades since it was "Duffy's Tavern". Today they started a "new menu" and much to my horror the simple bacon cheeseburger is complete crap now. Mine was served with a huge wad of slimy, stringy uncooked bacon that almost gagged me. At least the guy told me that it was bacon but it had no resemblance at all to what I've come to know as bacon. I would give this place negative stars without question. I was disrespected by staff and when I needed their protection from an unruly customer that was harassing me they were no help. They just brushes it off. The man that was harassing me said I stole his pool table.This pool table had been set up for a new patron and I paid the bartender for the ball. How this disrespectful customer ended up taking the table and insulting me is beyond me. I was here last night, maybe my fifth time and had a great time with friends. The food is always good!! I had the burger dip (my first burger dip ever), and it was really really good. The drinks are always strong, the type where it's your first one and you can barely get it down. Not to mention, the bartenders are cool enough to act like they actually like you. Ah the 4 B's. I was first introduced to this place back in August as the starting point for a buddy's birthday and we ended up closing the place out that night. I've since been back 5 or 6 times since and I've gotta say that I really enjoy this place for what it is. This bar is definitely not for everyone, but if you have a set of friends that love a quality dive atmosphere with some great games and beers then this place is definitely worth checking out. I've also done a date here (definitely NOT a first date spot) and it made for a really fun no-pressure night out for both of us. The games really make this place come together: a skee-ball, 5-6 pool tables, 2 well calibrated buck hunter machines, 2 modern golden tee machines, a late era pinball machine, and the best pop-a-shot i've seen in a bar. Pool is free on Monday & Thursday nights. The bar also has weekly pool tournaments with 5$ buy ins which I have yet to check out, but it sounded pretty fun. The staff is very nice and is generally quick to getting you a refill on your drinks. I rarely see a line up at the bar as the waitress that is usually there does an awesome job keeping everyone happy. The food is decent enough for the environment. I've gotten a club sandwich here which was a great base for a night of drinking, pool, and skee-ball. I've also split the nachos and people have said that the burgers were decent as well. I wouldn't go here to eat, but if you get hungry or you're running late the food does the trick and isn't gross. Worth checking out if you're looking for a fun night out without having to squeeze through crowds of people. I've yet to come here on the weekend, but this is an A+ weeknight spot. read more

Such a sketch location, so creepy, so secretive, but their $5 burger makes it 4 stars! Yummm! So my friend and I come here to try their burger as he was craving for some. We yelped and googled it and still didn't see the name anywhere until we looked on the side and there it was, oddly on the building. We walk in, and literally, it feels like we've walked into a weird pool hall, dive bar dungeon. There's pool tables straight ahead, thick smells of old cigarettes/ash trays, and pin ball tables/games surrounding the walls. Seriously, it was such an awkward feel. Nobody is here to greet us, we are uncertain if it's a bar or not because it didn't say it was. There's people playing pool and at the bar ordering food. How odd, hmm.... We akwardly walk towards the bar. It's small. Like seriously 2 bartenders/our servers, with a cook on the far left side back. We see a sign for a $5 burger deal so I get that. We take a peak at the menu too just to check things out. Lots of things like soup, burgers, sandwiches, apps. My friend orders a bacon burger, which is about $7 and comes with fries. Let me just say that it was so awkward ordering. My friend asks the bartender/server several questions about the food, and she awkwardly answers. It's loud, he can't hear her, so she just stares at him. He can't hear her, so he stares at her. It's so weird. She's not very welcoming, or social. But we finally order that and ask about drink specials. She makes him some sweet but strong drink. I wish the cups were bigger for the price of drinks. Literally it was like $7-$8 for a 3 inch glass. I mean, it was nice of her to give him the glass and she topped it off, I just thought it would be worth more if they gave bigger glasses. I ordered a tasty and yummy hard cider with fireball. So dayum tasty!!! I can't believe it was like $11 for the drink, but I suppose it was worth it since I loved it and drank every drop of it. I love hard cider, and it's the only type of "beer" I drink. We get our food about 15 minutes after, or less, and it is so tasty. I must say the burgers are so juicy, thick, and tasty. I loved how flavorful it was, and how it wasn't bland or small. The patty tasted homemade and mixed with sausage. It was bomb. It also came with a basket of fries which is plentiful enough! Then the bartender gives us a bucket of sauces which I thought was so cute! Overall, I thought the service was awkward, but pretty good at the end. Drinks are a bit pricey to me. I would rate the food a definite 4/5 stars but the awkward ordering and entrance gave it a 3 stars. Plus, the cigarette smell and dungeon feel also knocked a few stars.
