A while back I wrote a review that I had not eaten lunch here because of the smell of incense and it really took away my appetite. I know I received your response that they were going to look into that. For months I avoided going there and last week stuck my head in there was no smell since it had delightful lunch. The food was great. Today I went to have lunch and again the smell of incense was so strong. We were able to get a table by the open doorto diminish some of the intensity, but I hope the owner works with the staff so that no smell is so apparent. Incense smell is not a good smell for restaurant. read more

Happy New Year, everyone! We enjoyed our New Year's Day dinner at 5 Spiced. It was our first visit, but not our last. The food was great--some of the best Chinese food I've had in a while. Not only was the food terrific, but so were the wait staff. The owner even took the time to come to our table to greet us this evening. If you enjoy Chinese food, 5 Spiced is a winner. There is a full bar, too, and the restaurant is beautifully decorated and the restaurant is very clean. Two thumbs up. read more

I went to Silver Palace regularly throughout the 2000s until I moved out of the east bay. I went back today, and the next generation has really carried on the legacy of the previous. The service is super friendly. The noodles (garlic w/ beef and chicken chow mein) are as good as anywhere in the Bay Area for those types. They take their dumplings seriously and the soup dumplings and pork buns were very strong. Best of all, the pot stickers were exactly the same great quality and texture that they were during my high school days. The redesigned space looks great but still reminds me of Silver Palace, and the wines are reasonably priced. I'm so happy this new incarnation of the restaurant is thriving. read more

Today I ordered Hot and Sour Soup, the best one I have had so far, Beef on Fired, very tasty and tender, Orange Chicken, its yummy, but not outstanding, Emperor's Chow Mein, super duper delicious, Honey Glazed Basil Prawn, and Honey Glazed Basil Prawn. I did not type twice. It was very flavorful, so I had to order another one. I went to this restaurant first time in February, and second time today (in March). I will find time to go in April and definitely I will take my Mom there for the Mother's day! I already knew what will I order for next time :) read more

A new, nice Chinese restaurant in Montclair village! We have eaten at 5 Spiced Kitchen twice and we really enjoyed our dinners both times. The space has be remodeled giving the restaurant a new ambiance that flows for such a big space. The service is attentive & the food comes out fast. On two different occasions we started with shrimp dumplings, pot stickers, wonton soups & Mo Sho chicken. The homemade dumplings are flavorful. We really like the chicken /cilantro & soup dumplings! The Mo Sho has plenty of tender chicken and it's not just filled with cabbage. For our main dishes we enjoyed the ginger sauce eggplant, dry braised string beans, big boss fried rice & chicken with mixed vegetables. Overall the food is delicious, they use fresh ingredients, have unique sauces & it's not greasy. We can't wait to go back & try some new dishes soon. read more

Excellent Chinese restaurant in Montclair!! Great pan fried chow mein. Good soup dumplings. Kids love the green onions pancakes. And the sizzling rice soup was superb. Excellent Chinese food served hot. This is a great place to go for lunch, due to the place not being packed. I'm a noodle fan, and they have the best variety of noodles in the area. If you enjoy potstickers, which I do, they're some of the best I've had. Service is top notch, ambiance is pleasant, and the prices are comparable, if not a little less, than most restaurants in the area. I have been to 5Spiced about 7 times. When they first opened, I enjoyed everything from the menu. Now that they have settled into the village, it's been ok. Best thing off the menu- the fried rice, chicken and green beans, noodle with beef. The wings are not cooked enough. The portions do not align with the cost, but hey it's Montclair village- they have to pay the high rent. It is one of the two best Asian spots in Montclair and stick to the basics - you will not be disappointed. read more

My partner and I just ate dinner here and got a wonderfully delectable large serving of the garlic and mushrooms fried rice that also had other veggies in it.. not greasy at all, perfectly seasoned and delicious with our order of chicken and shrimp Kung Pao that my husband loved and the black bean sauce seafood that I had them add the snow peas. This is now my new go-to Chinese food in the East Bay! I stopped going out to Chinese food since there are so many interesting restaurants but my partner saw that they had a high review so we took a chance.. and it hit the comfort, yummy, and healthy tasting criteria! I researched the Bay Area pretty thoroughly in search of the best Chinese food and I arrived at 5 Spices Kitchen, based on other reviews but also based on their menu, which I thought showed a thorough appreciation for Chinese and other Asian flavors. It is a fusion restaurant, as well as classic Chinese, I thought. We had: BBQ Pork Fried Rice (the best!), Pork Belly Sliders, Hot and Sour Soup, Char San Beef, BBQ Pork & Veggie Chow Mein. All the food came out piping hot, delicious, and good to look at. The service was excellent, the decor beautiful. We will definitely be back again! read more

Montclair Village has been missing a quality Chinese restaurant for years...not anymore. We ordered 4 dishes with fried and steam rice. All were superb. Great addition to the village!!!! Ordered crab Rangoon, pork belly slider, and the garlic + lemongrass butter noodles. Everything was very large portions and delicious. Just finished! Friendly staff and lots of dishes to like here. Green beans, mu shu, veggie shu mai, pork fried rice, longevity noodles, sesame and pineapple sweet & sour chicken. Incredibly disappointing first experience in this new restaurant. The waiter was not very helpful or attentive. I ordered one entrée and a bowl of hot and sour soup. After I was nearly done with my soup, the chef came out of the back with his lunch, looked at me and asked, " is that all you ordered for lunch?" to which I replied, "No, I ordered the Mongolian Lamb entree as well." When the waiter returned, acting confused, thinking that I had only ordered a bowl of soup, I simply said to go ahead and skip it, paid the bill, and walked out.. the soup was "OK" but had a bit too much vinegar in my opinion. read more

The food was fresh and the service on point . They have an eclectic menu that's hard to pin down by region, but the food is all fresh and consistent with great Chinese cuisine . I'm so happy to see a Chinese restaurant back in Montclair after a long absence. The daughter of the owner of the Silver Palace that once was at the location is the owner now, so I know she has her heart in the place. The setting is welcoming, as are the wait staff. Blessedly, it's not hip and happening so you can relax at one of the well separated tables and converse without yelling. Unlike many restaurants, they are happy to accommodate to your dietary needs, be they vegetarian, vegan, gluten free dishes, low sodium, oil free, or no MSG. read more

Overall the food was pretty tasty. We ordered cilantro chicken, sesame chicken, crab Rangoon and garlic noodles w/ minced pork for delivery. The food arrived in about 30 mins. so delivery was quick. Everything was hot as well. The chicken, dumplings and Rangoon were all good - flavorful but not spicy, so if you want to zip things up make sure to have some chili sauce handy. The garlic noodles, which we were most looking forward to were inedible, however. They tasted like soap and the pork was invisible. It was shocking since the rest of the food was good, so perhaps a cooking pan didn't get rinsed completely or something. We'll likely give 5 Spices another try but we won't risk the garlic noodles again as I won't be able to think of anything but that soapy flavor. read more

WOW is all I can say! We came for lunch today after ordering from DoorDash last week. The food is out of this world and the service is welcoming and exceptional. We started with pork chive dumplings and basil chicken sui mai...they are house made and absolutely awesome...great dipping sauces for each. Then we had the pork mushu with pancakes...so perfect! Sometimes the pancakes from other places are more like tortilla, these are exquisite thin pancakes that don't fall apart when filled. Absolutely the best we have ever had! This was my sixth visit to this wonderful Asian restaurant in the Montclair Shopping Center area. I brought my students as it was an opportunity to celebrate the Chinese New Year's. The food was excellent. The service was great. It was like being in someone's home with the owner, checking in several times and taking time to share with my students about traditions of the Chinese new years. I highly recommend if you want excellent food with various takes on traditional Chinese food and yet innovative. Great value for your money. You won't be disappointed. read more
