Ate here for lunch during Market Square Day in June and 5 Thai Bistro was a very welcome respite from the extreme heat outside. Our party of 3 was seated immediately in this clean and attractive restaurant and we decided to share two entrees: Pineapple Fried Rice and Deluxe Pad Thai. Both were delicious and the portion size of the two plates was enough for all three of us to feel satisfied. For dessert we got the mango sticky rice which was also outstanding. I had the best early dinner today at 5 Thai! I'm so glad this place is still exceptional years later. Their take out was booming and because of the rain it was not busy inside so it was nice to sit and chat. We brought the kids and they loved all of the food too! Not surprising through, they have so many delicious options. We went with the drunken noddles, bbq pork, curry puffs, chicken wings and last but not least the crab rangoon. We appeared a few minutes before the restaurant opened, and the staff were very pleasant and even apologized (though completely not necessary) for the wait. The interior is quite spacious with plenty of sunlight, and even when we left it wasn't very busy for a Sunday around lunchtime. I ordered drunken noodles with steamed tofu and left pleased. The server didn't ask me for spice level, but it definitely had a kick to it, which I appreciated. The duck noodle soup sounded like it'd be a great, unique dish - but the duck is probably best left to dry noodle dishes, where it can remain crispy. Overall, I had a great experience at 5 Thai Bistro. The Mama's Dumplings which were $10.45 were just okay. I would have preferred them pan-fried rather than deep-fried. I ordered the Crispy Duck Massaman Curry (gluten-free) with potatoes, carrots, onions, and peanuts. The portion size was excellent and the flavors were tangy and comforting, though I wish the peanut flavor was a bit stronger. I ordered level 4 spice and should have gone with a 5. If you like heat, I recommend at least a level 5. I am very particular about duck since it is easy to dry out, but this was crispy yet still moist, which impressed me. It was a bit pricey at $27.95, but understandable for duck. The waitress was delightful and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. I will definitely return. read more

3rd visit and each time has been really good and consistent. I've tried several Thai places in NH and this one is the best by far. Spring rolls are crispy and the insides are not soggy. Dumplings have great flavor and the sticky sauce they serve them with is the perfect touch. The basil stir-fry was perfect. I like my food Thai hot and this did not disappoint. I enjoyed the food I ate here. It tasted as if it was all freshly cooked. The fried calamari appetizer tasted like it was prepared with fresh calarmari and not frozen. The Pad Thai was as hot as possible from a temp perspective. The restaurant itself was like other Thai restaurants in that it had a lot of dark wood tables, I felt at home as a result. There is a parking lot in the back if you can't find street parking. A brief stop. The food is very good but be prepared because the portions are small and you might leave hungry. I did. Did the server just call be boss? That might be enough for me to chop the tip but I didn't. Please don't ever call me boss or anything other than sir. I find that a little too familiar and you don't even know me. I went here often while working in town. I still meet a group of former coworkers here every year after we go see the gingerbread house display at the historical center, and it never disappoints! Everything we've had here has been excellent, fresh and delicious; the pad Thai is the best I've had (and I get it at every Thai restaurant I've ever gone to). So so cute! Little hidden Thai spot in Portsmouth! We were doing a New England tour and stopped here by happenstance. They were closing for break between lunch and dinner and were kind enough to seat us and serve us quickly. Get the: Thai iced tea, a little sweet but good Crunchy or Crispy Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp never had anything like it and the flavor was outstanding! Pineapple fried rice was a little bland but moist and traditional and went really well with the Crispy Pad Thai Large seating area, a bar with plenty of options and very clean. My drunken noodles with tofu was spicy and flavorful. Hubby's pad Thai with beef was a little lackluster. We weren't asked about spice levels so maybe they just went with mild to be safe. This is the best Thai restaurant that I have visited coast to coast. I will drive well over an hour each way from Maine just to have dinner and order some take out as well to extend the party to the next day! The soups are beyond good. Portion sizes are large, prices are good, and staff are friendly! A great atmosphere in a very fun part of town. Parking is surprisingly easy most of the time. Highly recommend the pak mor, fresh rolls, mamas dumpling, Kora tong thong, noodle soups, spicy fried rice, pad Thai, drunken noodles, and any of the curry. By the way it was 5:00 pm there were lots of tables open . I noticed the AC was blowing too cold in the corner I asked politely to be moved to the next table. I am in Portsmouth, NH, because that was the closest (Marriott) hotel room I could get to Ogunquit, ME and I am here to see my friend starring in the WORLD PREMIER of the musical "Mr. Holland's Opus" at the Ogunquit Playhouse. So I booked two nights for an actual, mini, vacation and then researched by dining options on Yelp. I built a list of 6 dining options for Portsmouth. I arrived Monday night in the pouring rain. Monday can be a tricky night to eat out, but 5 Thai Bistro was open and, when I arrived, PACKED. I got one of only 2 available seats at the bar. As far as I could tell every table was full. DELIGHTFUL vibe. Lots of happy people enjoying their meals. Excellent, friendly, attentive waitstaff. Nice little space. The bar itself is really nice. Big, roomy, beautiful. I drank sake. I only drink cold sake and I want it cold, cold. Because, you know, I'm an American and that's how we do. This sake was not only COLD, but served in a wine ice bucket. So: perfect! All that being said: I ordered 3 different appetizers because I like to try a variety of items. My combined "score" for these appetizers would have to be about a 2.5. Not inedible. But I would not eat them again. Not good. Fresh/Summer Rolls: Well constructed, did not come apart in my hands. Wrapped tightly. Altho! The actual wraps were very thick?? They required quite a bit of chewing. I've never had wraps that thick before (I eat summer rolls pretty frequently). And, in the middle of the rolls was what had to be a quarter of a cucumber. Like a HUGE piece of cucumber. That was not really okay. I've never had a summer roll where the veg wasn't finely diced/chopped. So I'm deducting like a lot of points for technique on this one. Fried Tofu: very unfortunate. Just sticks of completely unseasoned tofu fried almost to desiccation. Do not order these. Chive Cakes: I had HIGH hopes. Chives are DELICIOUS. Again, I think these were over fried?? Sauce was also...not good. The combination was a very bad flavor. Again: Do not order these. I was getting pretty discouraged at this point. But I wanted something DELICIOUS. Or at least, you know, tasty and not super disappointing. So I pushed on and ordered the Deluxe Pad Thai. Deluxe Pad Thai (I got it without chicken - since I don't eat chicken) comes with fried tofu, shrimp, chicken, egg, scallions, bean sprouts, peanuts and A WHOLE LOT OF DELICIOUS. This dish is LOVELY. Also, a bit spicy. You can also get it "crispy" where they apparently fry the noodles?? I would 100% have gotten that version except I have a molar that is about a month past when it should have been extracted, so that wasn't going to work. So maybe don't order any of the appetizers I got?? Because that Pad Thai was pretty fantastic. Hence 4 stars instead of 3. read more

Love us some Thai and this place did not disappoint! They had unique items on the menu from most and we decided to give a couple a try. Beef noodle soup absolutely 10/10. The beef was huge tender chunks of beef rather than sliced chewy beef you typically get. So delicious I would consider it a treat. Next we tried Crispy Pad Thai. It came with an entire plate of crispy noodles. I am not sure what we were expecting, but this wasn't quite it. Glad we gave it a try though. If we ordered it again we would ask for half and half as we liked the crispy noodles, but not for the whole plate, it was a little dry and hard to eat for us. 7/0.
