My wife and I went here for lunch yesterday after hearing a mix of reviews--some bad, but mostly good. We started with the pork dumplings, which were excellent. For lunch, I had the shrimp Pad Thai and my wife ordered the Drunken Hangover. Everything was absolutely amazing. This place will definitely be one of our regular go-to spots, especially since my wife works around the corner. We some videos on social media about this place and decided to give it a try. I'm glad that we made a reservation as the place is not very large and it was very busy. The had free parking available. Our server took our drink order and provided us with a menu as soon as we sat down. My drink was strong and it tasted ok. For an appetizer we went with the wings. We asked for spicy but they weren't very spicy. They were seasoned nicely and were crispy. For my main course, I went with shrimp pad thai. It was good pad thai but after seeing my Hanoi Bone in, I would have to come to try that dish. I love the overall decor of this place. This was our second trip to Choppystix. The first one was really great. However, this trip was much different. I ordered the crispy chicken with ginger rice. It came with a sipping bowl of chicken broth and a dipping sauce. The chicken was not even edible. Extremely chewy and dry .... Not even sure what cut of meat it was. Also, the breading was so thick I could hardly even taste the meat. The rice was fine and the broth was good. But overall, the dish was at best 1.0 out of 5.0. We also ordered chicken wings ... way over sauced and over breaded. There was very little meat on the wings as the quality was again far below standard. My wife had the drunken noodles ... this dish was fine ... but nothing special. This review is an anomaly. I went to Choppystix previously and had the Kha Soi ... it was excellent! And I do not take a negative review lightly. I rarely write them because I only go places where I am confident in the food for the most part ... see my other reviews. But the quality of our meal yesterday was far below what we experienced previously. I know Choppystix can provide excellent quality food and service. They just missed the mark yesterday. Our server was very good ... attentive and prompt. But I typically am not a complainer so she did not have an opportunity to address these issues. We came back for lunch this time to try some different dishes and were just as pleased with the food and service as the first time. We were sat in a cozy corner booth table and noticed they hired additional waitstaff, which is great as our server was friendly, prompt, and experienced. We didn't have to ask for water refill as she noticed it was empty and promptly refilled it. I got to order thai iced tea which was served with whipped cream on top, not traditional but a nice surprise. Thai iced tea was nice and strong, just how I like it! We ordered the Crab Zilla bites, which were delicious. They had crab meat,,blueberry,melty goat cheese,Mexican and mozzarella cheese,scallion and carrot stuffing. For entrees, we ordered the Pok Pok noodle, which was ramen noodles with a spicy Korean sauce,bokchoy,chashu pork,Crispy shrimp wonton,pickled onion,scallions,cilantro,peanut, fried egg, and a small sipping soup. It reminded me an Asian fusion take on a Korean noodle dish called, Bibim Guksu. I only wished I asked for additional Gochujang or hot sauce to add more spice to my dish. We also ordered the Hot Chix curry, which was Japanese Curry with Crispy chicken,fried egg,pickled onion and choppy fries served over rice. My boyfriend said it was delicious as evident by his empty plate. We will definitely come again to try more dishes! We tried Choppystix for lunch today and enjoyed the food. As others have mentioned they have a small parking lot which is convenient, but keep in mind they are located more than a mile from the downtown area in the West end of Portsmouth. As this was lunch, we did not have the luxury of time and became concerned when we saw just one person running the entire front of the house. Taking takeout orders from people walking in, waiting tables, running food, busing etc... We waited quite some time before our order was taken. Thankfully the food did come from the kitchen quickly, but overall we spent more time than we expected. The food we tried was all very good, perhaps a bit higher priced than some of the other spots in town, ie: $6.50 for a small Thai Iced Coffee. The Miso Hungry Dumplings were delicious, 4 for $10.00 and served upside down with the crispy fond from the pan. Reminded me of those at Din Tai Fung and perhaps as delicious. The See U Choppy was also quite tasty with crispy chicken. A side order of fried rice was just ok, and rather simple. We checked the menu out online and it was clearly organized into categories of noodles, rice, etc... The menu provided in the restaurant has all the food items grouped together in no particular order. Not as easy to read as what is online. Service was spotty due to the fact that one server is just not enough and the restaurant was not really that busy. There is no checking in on your food, drinks were forgotten, etc... We had to flag our server for the check. Our server was pleasant, but needed help. That said, we did enjoy our lunch overall and will try again, but hope for a better service experience read more

Really solid new spot in Portsmouth in the old Behind the Plate spot. Very modern and cute interior with comfortable seating (booths, chairs and bar seating options.) Service was great: friendly, prompt. I was especially impressed with service given that 10 minutes after opening, they were more than half full. The menu is Pan Asian and has selections that reflect Malasian, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese influences. It was very refreshing to see some options not available in most area restaurants (Roti Canai, Hainan Chicken Rice, Mala wings, Khao Soi, etc). My only feedback is this: offer both chopsticks and silverware (our table and the table next to us had to request chopsticks after the food arrived) and please, pretty please consider more seafood options (it's Portsmouth!) as you expand the menu. Local scallops, lobster, tuna, and mussels would be a great addition to the crab dumplings and shrimp option on the entrees. Korean seafood and kimchi pancakes, shrimp toast, larb salad, and smashed cucumber salad would be some welcome additions to the already diverse menu they've rolled out this summer. read more

Excellent street food. They are still in their soft opening phase and the menu will be updated soon so I won't comment on specific dishes. But everything we had was too quality and unique from other Thai restaurants in the area. Parking can be confusing as they still haven't updated signage. You can park in any of the spots that are for Image Arts. We were served by the owner. She told us about the challenges of opening her first restaurant. They're new so be patient, food comes as it's ready. The decor is stunning! Local artist Spenser Macleod did the original artwork. read more

I stopped by Choppystix for a quick dinner before my pottery class. The hostess was so kind as to seat me in a cozy corner away from the door on a particularly chilly night. Service was friendly and quick. I was pleasantly surprised by a little bowl of soup with my entree. If the broth is any indication of the ramen, it's absolutely delicious. I've been here a couple of times already and everytime I come the food is amazing. It's a great place with an huge variety of food. The pho is the best I've ever had. Pho is one of my favorite things and I've had a lot of different kinds. Hands down the best pho. The broth is so flavorful. Recently I had the Hot Curry Chix and everything was perfect. Chicken was cooked to perfection, rice was delicious and love the fried egg. The menu items are all things I really don't see anywhere else. I plan to keep coming back to try everything. Don't miss the mixed drinks either. So far every one of them were delicious. Staff is so friendly and the owner really cares about the experience as well as the food. Choppystix has opened in the former Behind The Plate space next to Image Arts on Islington Street. The place is cozy which offers a full service dining room with table seating. booth wall back seating and seating up at the bar and there are artful painted murals on the walls. They offer a variety of Asian dishes & appetizers including satay, dumplings, wings, Crabzilla bites, roti canai, crispy bokchoy, pad thai noodles, drunken noodles, noodle soups, fried rice, Hainan chicken ginger rice, lamb shank curry, Hanoi bone-in ribs & brisket, Thal ice coffee & tea, and can & bottled drinks. I stopped by Choppystix for dinner takeout recently. I ordered the Choppystix Chicken Pad Thai ($16 plus tax) and Miso Hungry Dumplings ($9 plus tax), which was all set to go in about 10 minutes. The Pad Thai had soft cooked rice noodles, egg, scallions, bean sprouts, crispy rice noodles, topped with a tender grilled chicken breast (cut in strips), lime wedge. This dish tasted pretty fresh and it was cooked just right. The hot & fresh Dumplings were pan fried together (5) filled with miso marinated crab & pork, glass noodles, cabbage, scallion, mushroom, chives, topped with crushed peanuts and ponzu sauce on the side. Overall, I really enjoyed the choices I ordered here. I will definitely have to try the Hainan chicken ginger rice since there are a very few places I've been to, which actually serve this including at a popular Thai restaurant in Marlborough MA. read more

My friend and I ate an expensive and frankly bad meal there- Boom Boom chicken- A blob of rice and cold fried chicken thigh, sliced on top. It was served with a red homemade sauce and three slices of cucumber as a garnish. That was $17.! I had a blob of Pad Thai with a cloying sauce- again with a scallion top stuck in to deliver some color in an otherwise brown concoction. With this was last nite's chicken cutlet sliced cold on top. White foamy hard noodles on top for some reason. And we had ordered the fried wontons filled with cream cheese and blueberries- and supposedly some crab, none to be detected. A deep fried dessert as an appetizer! Three couples had raved about this place so I was really looking forward to it. Really pleasant surprise. Very hip interior and an even hipper staff. Thy have a perfectly sized menu that highlights a lot of East Asian flavors. The Roti Cani was delicious, but I request one more roti served with the dish to make sure none of that curry goes unwasted. Took the servers excellent suggestion in getting the Khao Soi and it was amazingly filling and refreshing. The Japanese curry is also great and the idea of serving it with fries is an all-star move. I went back for another meal and was very disappointed. The fried bok choy and wings were delicious but the Drunken Hangover with chicken consisted of grilled sliced up bland chicken sitting on top of mushed up tiny pieces of noodle and veg - no noodle was bigger than a square inch in size because it had been completely overcooked and the whole thing turned to mush. My husband had the Chicky Boom-Boom which was just ok - same bland chicken over sticky rice with some sauce poured over. SO disappointing. I couldn't even eat mine but the server (very overly enthusiastic) didn't even notice. Sad that this place has devolved to mediocre at best. read more

Every dish I've tried has been excellent: Drunken Hangover (I got it with beef) - Choppystix' take on Drunken Noodles - the noodles are perfectly cooked and the sauce is rich, sweet, and spicy all at once. Hainan Chicken Ginger Rice - light and fresh with a delicious spicy sauce. A perfect lunch! Satay Stix Tandoori - spicy, perfectly cooked, and served with peanut sauce. Egg Fried Rice - simple and delicious. This location has been tough on restaurants in the past - show Choppystix some love and keep them in business because they absolutely deserve it. read more

Another great new restaurant for Portsmouth. We love Chinese/Asian food. The problem in this area is the Chinese restaurants all serve the same American style. Pu Pu platters, boneless ribs, etc, etc, boring. Until now there's been only one other that serves the real thing. Now there's Choppystix which offers a varied Asian menu with Chinese, Thai and more. They offer some excellent dishes. I wanted to try the Lamb shanks in curry but they were out, Next time I'll get it. We started with dumplings and a hot/sweet sauce. They were tremendous. My wife had the Chop Chop fried rice with shrimp. It was delicious, cooked perfect, all fresh and she raved about it. I had the Hanoi bone in. The broth was delicious and unique. The beef rib was substantial as was all the meat. One of the best Pho dishes I've had. The space was casual and a bit eclectic. But very comfortable. Service was top notch.
