My rating that I am giving this place is dropping from 4 stars to 1 star. 15 minutes of waiting for someone to even acknowledge that we were ready for our glasses of water. We left and handed the menu back. Went to Applebee's instead and were seated for 5 seconds and the water arrived. The food was good when I last ate here but don't feel like waiting for an hour to eat. I also remember waiting 15 minutes or so for the bill the previous time. My wife and I stumbled upon the 50's Grill and thought it might be a nice change of pace. We were quickly greeted and seated but that was about the best the service got. We ordered our sodas and dinners right away when prompted. Once our drinks and soup arrived that was the last time we saw our server for a while. Both our drinks were near or were empty upon our foods arrival. Our server quickly set our food down and promptly left. So quickly I couldn't even get a refill request in. Upon looking over my order it was not correct to say the least. The server finally returned and for the most part wanted me to keep the item vs. getting what I ordered. Luckily another server and manager were near that could handle the issue. My wife was nearly done with her meal when my correct burger arrived back at the table. Again the server did not refill our sodas. Finally upon my finishing my burger was I able to get the servers attention to get our sodas refilled. After a bit of a delay she arrived and promptly spilled the full glass of coke all over my wife. To say it made a mess of the table and everything my wife was wearing is an understatement. Our server seemed perplexed and didn't know what to do. Finally a manager arrived with a mop and towels but proceeded to start cleaning up the floor and chairs near the spill. After some awkward moments passed I finally just asked for the check so we could leave. At no time did the manager or staff attempt to compensate for the disastrous evening. I personally will not be returning to this restaurant and would not recommend it to anyone else either. read more

Good ambience, evoking what TV says were the 50s. Service was good but not excellent. I ordered my first pie but the lady came back saying they didn't have it. Then I ordered my second choice, which the lady went to ask if they had it, but they did not. At this point I asked for the list of pies they *did* have. Only one was decent, so I went with it (though it wasn't on the top of my list). The pie came and I swear it was about 60% crust and the rest was a scant filling. My malt was overly sweet, but oh well. I would've given it a 2/5 stars but the ambience saved it a little. I'd be up for coming back to try their food. read more

This spot has the best homemade food. I'm a whole food nut and they can tell me, and I can pronounce, the ingredients of everything I select. My kids love the burgers and malts. The split pea soup is the best in the universe. Yup, the universe. Service is quick and friendly. I'm getting off my phone now since I feel like I'm having dinner at home--and phone's aren't allowed at my family's dinner table. :-). I went to eat lunch and ordered a hot turkey sandwich. thewaitress was plesent and brought my order ,. the French loaf was cold, not fresh and the butter didn't melt , the entrée was light on turkey ,it didn't even cover the bread it was on,,to make matters worse it was luke warm at best, butter didn't melt on vegatables,,the waitress took it back and the manager brought it out saying,,your hot turkey sandwich and a walked away,,it was just microwaved , it was the same plate with the corner I tried missing,,sad theat its advertised as fresh,,if I wanted a banquet tv dinner, I could of gone to the store and got it for $3.00.. the bill for this microwaved turkey sandwich was 16.00 with a iced tea... the prices have gone way up and the food quality is not nearly as good,,,,sad that its always been a great place to eat,,I wont be going back read more

We had heard good things about the 50's Grill, so we were looking forward to trying it. Unfortunately, after our first visit, we will probably not come back. The atmosphere was great. From the waitresses in poodle skirts, to the period look and feel of the place, it was definitely very cool. Most of the wait staff appeared to be teenagers, which is fine, but the level of service was a bit lacking. We needed to remind our server to bring our silverware and napkins, and had to again remind her to refill our waters and sodas part way through our meal. Nothing drastic, but could have been better. The worst part of our visit was the ridiculous amount of time it took to get our food. We arrived at about 5:45 on a Saturday night, were seated immediately, but didn't get our food until well after 6:30, almost 6:45. I could maybe understand this if they were swamped with customers and having a hard time keeping up, but the place was probably only 1/3 full. The waitress did at one point apologize for the wait, and mentioned that it's hard to keep up when there are large parties to serve...but I saw no large parties, and the place felt fairly empty. While the wait was bad enough, it didn't help that when our food arrived, it was just so-so. Not terrible, but not what we were expecting. I had ordered a bacon cheeseburger, and my wife had the patty melt. Both of our burgers were cooked well-done, when we had both requested medium. The fries were OK, not great - kinda soggy and not very crispy at all. The one bright spot was the home baked bun, which was very good. All told, we were really hoping to love the place, but between the wait, mediocre service, and the sub-par food quality, we see no reason to return. Also, the prices are somewhat on the high side for what you get, but I suppose you are paying for the atmosphere (certainly not for service or the food). read more

The carrot cake was moist and delicious, very rich, so we shared. He had the California burger, l had patty melt. Mine was OK, not the best I've ever had. He enjoyed his burger. You pay a premium for feeling like you turned the clock back to the 1950s. The booths and bathrooms look like they were built in the 1950s. The staff is refreshingly friendly and helpful. Ticket time for our meal was reasonable, the portion size on their signature dish (Shepherd's Pie) left me wanting more, but the dab of it that I did get for around $10 was delicious. It's a fun novelty place to take friends from out of town, but have time to take it in and wait for your food, it's not a 30 minutes or less endeavor. Also not an every weekend place to eat, a little of this place goes a long way. read more

I've been coming to 50's grill for the last 26 years. My parents would meet for lunch while my mom was on maternity leave here. Minus from when I couldn't eat solid foods... I get the same thing every time. Their chicken pot pie is hands down the best you will ever have. I also am not sure why their basic dinner salad is so good, but it's refreshing and they need to bottle and sell their ranch dressing. You cannot go wrong with any of their malts or shakes, and definitely save room for german chocolate cake after dinner! The atmosphere is so cute and you can tell they cook everything from scratch. This place will always hold a special place in my heart as I went here many times with my grandparents. Have always enjoyed their comfort food like meatloaf, hot turkey sandwich, pot pies, etc. Went here with my family for the first time in quite awhile. Food hasn't changed at all....Still good and the kids loved it. Was a little disappointed to see that prices have gone up so much. Most items were $11-$15, which seems quite high for here. We'll be back but might be more apt to bring my family here more often if it was a little more reasonably priced. read more

In reading some of the other reviews, I'm completely surprised to see people complain about the food here. My husband and I live pretty close to 50's Grill and we order take-out from there on an embarrassingly regular basis. We pretty much stick with the same items...my hubby has the cheeseburger and fries and I have the walleye dinner and we both end our meal with hot fudge malts. However, we have also had the bison burger, the turkey sandwich and chicken sandwiches. We have NEVER had a problem with the food...in fact, its fantastic! The bread is homemade, the fries are delcious, the walleye is crisp and never greasy and the malts are well....just ridiculously good. I don't know if they use homemade ice cream, but it sure tastes like it. On occasion, our order has been mixed up...but in all fairness, I am one of those "When Harry Met Sally" people with the substiutions and specific requests, so I think its inevitable that sometimes mistakes happen. We have only ever called about it once and the manager was super apologetic and even sent us a free certificate for a burger and fries. We weren't looking for anything free and tried to decline the certificate, but he insisted. We've ordered their food when we've had friends over (including kids) and everyone raves about how tasty everything is. They must be doing something right considering how much money we spend at that place!! The only way they could improve anything is if they would add old-fashioned Graham Cracker Cream Pie to their menu!! :) read more

My husband and I met a friend here for lunch after church. It had been a while since I'd been here. My husband thinks that anywhere near Brookdale is totally the hood. Anyway the interior section we sat in seemed to be nicely remodeled. As always they have a huge selection for malt/shake flavors, and my hubbie and I split a Coffee Mocha one that was totally thick and yummy! The charming waitress's wear poodle skirts and peter-pan collared shirts. I love it! The food is as good as I remember it. The bread is freshly baked daily. Including the buns for sandwiches and burgers. My husband said his Bison burger was great. I had a Sante Fe Chicken sandwich that had this fantastic Guacamole on it that had a really good flavor. They don't give large portions of fries, but the price is right! Plus the Chicken-Pot Pie there is Excellent! And they have lots of other excellent desserts. The problem is I'm usually stuffed by the time dessert comes around. Its kind of fun going back in time a little! read more

After playing Mafia II all afternoon, my boyfriend and I were in the mood for a "real-life" 50's era experience for dinner, so we decided to find a 50's diner we could celebrate our anniversary at. We are fond of places like Johnny Rockets, Mickey's in St. Paul, and Ed Debevic's in Chicago, so we know what to look for. I give it 4 stars for the food and the atmosphere, because both were good, but could be improved upon. The service was great even though they were quite busy while we were there during the Sunday evening rush. I ordered the chicken club sandwich with fries, and my boyfriend ordered the chicken pot pie, which is apparently their #1 selling menu item. We chose to split both meals, as well as a bowl of their chicken & wild rice soup (made from scratch daily) and a cookies & cream malt for dessert. I noticed other reviewers complained about the fries, so I proceeded with caution, but was pleasantly surprised. They were nothing compared to the fries at Town Hall Brewery (my favorite in Minneapolis), but they were pretty good for crinkle fries--even better than the ones at Uncle Franky's. The soup is a broth-based chicen wild rice, which was unexpected, but great tasting. They provided us with fresh baked bread which was perfect to soak up the extra broth. The chicken club was nicely toasted, and it had a generous amount of chicken and bacon, so it seems we got our money's worth at $7.95. The pot pie had a perfectly cooked flaky crust (top only), but the filling lacked a little flavor--I've had worse for sure, but if you want a top-notch pot pie, I would visit Brit's Pub instead. The malt was pretty good--it's not like you can screw up cookie's and cream. I will say that the amount was very generous, and well worth $2.25 per person. The decor could've been a little more authentic, although it was nice to see the staff in poodle skirts and an old TV w/ a circular screen in the entry area (that waiting area was my favorite part). 50's grill what is more I can say when I want for a comfort food. Somehow going there give me a good feeling and surprisingly when I see their menu prices actually not cheap either but I am very satisfy so when I see my bill it is worth of money. We went there earlier, I have been hungry for a burger. And ended up try their chicken pot pie. Yum...thick sauce, full chunk of chicken cubes, thin flaky crust and the first spoon felt like back in the old time when grandma's still cooking. My husband got swiss mushroom burger and fries, which I think decent. For drinking I tried arnold palmer, it wasn't cocktail or something fancy it was a lemonade mixed with iced tea..genius, 2 of my fav drinks :) right amount of tart, sweet and thickness. We actually planned to order their malt but we already full perhaps next time, I love their malt though...speaking about their decor, it was ok, unique but we went there for the food not the decor. The 50's Grill is great! I use to go here a lot when I was growing up and always go there when I get a chance to come visit home. Their malts no one can beat. My favorite is the good ole stand by chocolate. I'm not sure what they do to their malts to make them as fabulous as they do, but I love them! The caramel one is pretty good too! As far as food goes I'm always a sucker and order their huge 3 cheese, cheese burger.....it is so good! Their soups are all delicious. I have never tasted a bad soup there! The chocolate cake is also really good too....if you are looking for a good Christmas gift to get they package and sell their homemade soups in gift packs and it is a great gift for those hard to buy for. We use to always do this for a friend of our family and she loved it! The chicken wild rice is my favorite there! read more

Extremely disappointed by this restaurant. When I ordered a bacon cheese burger, the waitress dropped off my order and it was a regular burger. When I told her my order was wrong, instead of taking my plate she brought me a plate of cold bacon... When I went to pay, I noticed they charged me for a regular cheese burger and a 1.50 extra for bacon so my order was more money than a regular bacon cheese burger. The cost compared to the quaility is underwhelming. I noticed a very expensive corvette parked all alone kiddy corner to the resturant and usually go with my gut instinct and drive away, because i've learned when you see 60k+ vehicles at small resturants it's usually the owners and that's where your $$ is going, but I wanted to give the place a chance (also there are very few sit down resturants in that area of Brooklyn Center that offer beer). The place was busy, but we waited over 10 minutes to get our water/order taken. At that time the waitress plainly stated "ready to order". I noticed all the wait staff seemed to be down and out, no smiles, it was very obvious that they were going through the motions. I ordered the 50's grill burger with the dinner salad, and my girlfriend ordered the walleye dinner with dinner salad. We both ordered one Summit beer each (bottle beer only, no draft). The salads were truly pathetic. Half dead iceberg lettuce out of a bag with two tomatos and soggy red onion. The walleye dinner came with slighly under cooked white bread. The walleye dinner ($14) had mutiple sizeable bones. I'm positive in came in a box, frozen, pre-breaded, and "prepared" by deep frying. The "grill burger" ($9) was made with a "home made bun" that couldn't bear the load of the patty, totmato, lettuce, and red onion. It grew soggy and pieced apart. The total dinner (walleye, burger, 2 summits) came to $40 with tip. We were in the resturant for 45 minutes and when we came out the Corvette with the license plate "gocrazy" was still parked in that kiddy corner spot, look for when if you go, you can see where the unnecessary upcharge went. I left feeling (and I really hate to say this) that I had gone to the Applebees down the street. read more

I might be a bigger fan of this place due to it's location, but I love coming here. I mostly get the burgers and the pies, and both are great. They are pretty expensive, so be ready for that, but you do get what you pay for here. I've also had all the different comfort food type options, such as pot pie, meatloaf, turkey and gravy, and so on, and they're all good. It's exactly what you'd want from a little, cozy restaurant. On top of that, the theming is unique, and the servers' poodle skirts are a nice touch. All in all, this is a place close to home that's a safe bet for hearty Midwestern dinners and great desserts! read more

We used to really like this place and their food is generally decent. But our servers have not been great lately. Last week we went with our family, which includes an eight months old baby who sat in a high chair next to me. I had ordered the soup and salad and when they brought out the soup, they placed it right between me and my baby who immediately reached for it. I couldn't get the soup away quickly enough before he put his little fingers right into the hot soup. The server barely muttered an "oh, sorry" while I calmed my screaming son down and applied ice from my drink to his fingers. Fortunately, the soup wasn't that hot to begin with and he didn't really burn his fingers, but it sure scared him. While we walked up to the register to pay, my husband talked to the manager about the incident and told him to address the issue with the server, so she won't place hot food in front of babies anymore. His reaction was very casual and he didn't seem very concerned at all. I think we will take a break from visiting for a while. read more

I was very excited about the advertised famous chicken pot pie. At the price I expected better. Although not bad but, by far not the best I have had. It was served in a standard bowl with a very thin crust (only on the top). A creamy base that was lacking in seasoning and overall flavor. With that said the addition of the pearl onions was a very nice touch. Service was amazing but for the entree you would be better off at that price picking one up from Costco... now theirs is AMAZING! read more

The 50's grill is like a blast back in time. Upon entering the restaurant, it's clear that everything is themed for the 1950's. The waitresses are dressed accordingly, and the layout is very eccentric. The buns are homemade and the malts are to die for; but the main appeal to the restaurant--that's been in business over 25 years now--is the genuine atmosphere, then of course the food that's served by young attractive girls dressed in clothes that make one wonder what life was like back in 1950. The food is priced reasonably for what I received. A good way to imagine the food is to think of what grandma might cook for the family on a Saturday night. You can choose from a variety of home-cooked foods such as meatloaf, pot pie, and of course, cookies and pies. There are over two dozen different flavors to choose from to satisfy anyone's acquired taste for sweets (I got the good old fashioned chocolate flavor.) They are served with a big metal cup and a glass that's already full. After eating a hamburger this can be the perfect ending to an already fulfilling meal. Like any popular restaurant, 50's grill has a weekly dinner special on their menu. Other than on Sundays, everyday holds a certain meal for a cheaper price. The disgraceful aspect of eating at 50's grill (which is why they get a four and not a five) is the location, directly in Brooklyn Center--a suburb with a local economy that's collapsing. read more

I've been to this place once before when my cousin took me and just remembered the great fries with ranch dressing and awesome malts. The second time around I still have the same reactions. Fun 50s atmosphere with good-ole American food, I couldn't ask for more when I'm in the mood for comfort. The last time I went here, I had the chocolate-banana malt which was soooo good. This time they were out of bananas so I tried the chocolate-strawberry malt which was still very good. I decided to go with the smaller cheeseburger option since I was going to have fries and a malt, but didn't realize until I was served that it didn't come with any of the usual works like lettuce, tomato or onion. Pickles where the only addition to the actual cheeseburger bread and meat itself. But, I wasn't as full as my compadre so I guess I really did get what I wanted:) read more

Been coming here for 22 years. Their baked goods esp.the bread is very good. Food is consistent. You'd think after all this time tho that they would figure out how to not run out of chicken on bbq nite! Prices have gone up while portion sizes have diminished some. Still the best place for a chocolate phosphate and their house creamy garlic salad dressing can't be beat. read more
