Absolutely loved this gem of a breakfast place while I was in Minneapolis for a work trip! I stopped by twice and both times got the tostadas - once with carnitas (my fav) and once with the chicken tinga. They also had a delicious iced banana bread latte on their special menu...the banana bread cold fold was so, so good. The second time I stopped in, I was with a coworker and they tried the avocado coffee...which was interested. It was similar to a smoothie consistency, but was definitely not my cup of tea. Busy little eatery located in downtown Minneapolis! Expect to wait 10 or more minutes, but we felt it was worth it. We went twice in the long weekend that we were visiting Minneapolis, both times we were pleased with the friendly servers, and the quality of food. They also have a bakery and coffee bar if you want to grab that and go, their cinnamon rolls and bars are pretty amazing! We had an apple cinnamon roll once and the next day tried the lemon raspberry bar which was extremely sweet, but everyone thought it was really good. Breakfast can be the usual eggs and bacon, but they have a lot of delicious omelettes, breakfast, burritos, chili, chilies, and a nice lunch, menu of sandwiches, burgers, salad, salads, etc. They also have a full bar if you're looking for weekend, mimosas or a little hair of the dog. One thing to note... the booths have hooks on the outside of them which appear to be a safety hazard. I'm saying this because one of the staff's shirt caught on a hook and they dumped a glass of ice water on me... not their fault... but what if that was hot coffee or hot food or something somebody was allergic to? The situation could have gone south fast. As the staff were cleaning up the mess they mentioned how they had told management about the unsafe hooks, and the person mopping up the floor also caught themselves in a hook... I visited Hen House during an early December trip to Minneapolis. I was able to navigate there through the skyway from my hotel. As a solo diner, they put me up at the bar stools near the check-in. The place was decorated for the holidays. They have mugs with sassy sayings and a whole merch section for Hen House aficionados. I had read that this is a popular spot due to its all-day breakfast, particularly the breakfast cocktails, cinnamon rolls, and Southern-style fare. I ordered a cinnamon roll - the only one available was the berry which wouldn't normally be my first choice. It is huge! Super sweet. I also saw that folks recommended the crab eggs benedict. I followed this recommendation and wish I hadn't - it's not what I'd normally get so I don't have a good reference for how good it was or wasn't. To me it was fine but I kind of wish I'd gotten something else, especially for $23. Overall this place has personality and makes good diner style breakfast food. We were visiting Minneapolis to attend a concert and wanted to find a nearby breakfast spot. Hen House was a five minute walk from our hotel, so we gave it a try. The restaurant is quite large and super cute. We were greeted and seated right away. The walls have fun little things written in chalk and it is very bright and cheery inside. We received the menu and waited a bit before our order was taken. We did not need to wait long for our food to arrive. My daughter and I ordered the same thing with slight variations--Two Eggs, Potatoes, and Toast. I chose the Hen Potatoes which were amazing! Tender on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside--not greasy at all. My daughter had the hash browns, which were just as good--not greasy, but perfectly crisp and flavorful. The seven grain toast and jam were great and our scrambled eggs were cooked just how we like. My daughter also ordered a fruit cup, which was filled with a bigger variety of fruit than she expected and she loved it. I ordered a side of bacon and it was delicious. While the food wowed us, our service was just okay. She was polite enough, but did not check on us until we were well into our meal. Thankfully, we didn't need anything. Our check and my payment were dealt with promptly, which we appreciated. We also ordered a caramel roll to go and were very glad we did. Super tasty and not overly sweet. My initial thoughts when I stepped in were that I was stepping back in time. When I worked downtown a decade or two ago, Peter's was the place for breakfast and often lunch. THough Peter's is missed, Hen House has really made the space their own in a wonderful way. I was very pleased with a number of vegan choices on their menu. I don't typically like coffee, but my family is from Vietnam where avocados are used as a dessert food. Keep in mind it's very different to what people are used to here. Luckily I ate fast and another server stopped by. I got the cinnamon whip French toast with a side of bacon. The French toast was fantastic and I loved the whip cream. I got 3 pieces of bacon as my side of bacon and they were good, your standard bacon. The kicker was when I got the bill and it was $7 for a side of bacon while my French toast was $15. That is absurd for a side of bacon so keep that in mind as they don't have sides and their prices listed on the menu. Overall, service can be hit or miss here but the food is good! Price fair to a little high but good quality ingredients. My only complaint is that this establishment, like so many others, serves cocoanut milk or almond milk-- both which are not sustainable options-- and oat milk (oily and sweet). Why not soy? Definitely a big space for a restaurant in the middle of the city, but they always seem to have a long line outside their door--even in the winter!
