Very standard diner on the Edina/St Louis Park border. The burger was tasty and the French fries taste fresh and like real potatoes (as opposed to frozen). The negative is that the menu is very limited, so basic burgers and basic salads. However, the prices are very reasonable and the space is bright and clean. I had to stop in on National Burger Day! There are only a few old school diners left in the Twin Cities, and this one is such a find! I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and fries + milkshakes to split. I loved the burger and traditional milkshake. I knocked a star off my review because the fries were soggy, but also brown? I was hoping for a crispier fry! First time here. Make sure you know or take a picture of your license plate number. They need it to confirm your parking if you park in the parking lot. Came at 2pm. Wasn't busy, only 2 other tables were occupied. Service was a little slow considering wasn't busy. But staff was eating their lunch it seemed at this time. Staff dressed in white nurse outfits. Food was definitely worth the wait though. Got large oreo malt. Which filled up the cup twice. Careful when you pour, it can come out really fast. Mushroom and Swiss was decent. Meat was a little dry, and didnt have much flavor, but a little salt and mayo helped. Fries were definitely amazing. I normally don't like fries but these were pretty well cooked. NOPE! My best friend is from Edina and loved this spot when he was younger. So, as you can imagine, on our yearly MN trip, when we heard it re opened he was excited to see. However, it was a disappointment. Malts/shakes were flavorless, the burgers were so rare we could barely finish, and they somehow messed up the fries. Please tell me why this is so overpriced. 'Bout time for an update. The Grill was down for such a prolonged time that many (myself included) assumed it had gone out of business or was closed for good. But like the Phoenix it rose from the figurative ashes to reopen and once again serve hearty (not necessarily healthy, but most certainly filling) food. It looks much the same as it was before the shutdown. Frankly the exterior and interior are largely (if not entirely) unchanged. Ate here with a long time friend and former neighbor. He went with a really good Patty Melt and I had a great single patty cheese burger with smoked cheddar and grilled onions. He and I split a basket of 1/2 order of fries which came heaped in a huge pile. FYI: When I came here back in the day I often was with a group of ~10 and we would order 3 full orders of fries for the table and combined with a burger proved very satisfying indeed. To drink I would frequently get a malt (served with the chilled mixer with a lot of your order still inside and just waiting for the room in your glass) but instead I went with the "Green River" which consisted of club soda with a few shots of lime syrup. It was honestly OK but I don't think I'll order it again. If you think that instead of fries you'll get a Caesar Salad instead, I think it's flavorful but not exactly low in calories. To sum up, the only changes I noted, the prices went up and the age of the wait staff went down. Service is prompt, professional and friendly. Can get pretty noisy depending especially on where you are seated. Again, depending upon day and/or time you might see a line of people waiting for a table or booth to open up. If you're by yourself or possibly one other person, I don't think that I've ever seen all of the stools at the counter occupied. Definitely a throwback to an earlier age (I think the Convention Grill opened in the late 1930s). Still a place to get a reliable burger and some excellent (and generously portioned) hand cut fries. Definitely family friendly and counts as a neighborhood institution. All-in-all I found it pretty darn solid. read more

The place is cute with a 50's diner feel. There are booths and tables. The booths are not padded so not a comfortable place to sit for longer than a hour and a half. We ordered the regular sized French fries for $9.95, we split them between four people and it was plenty, if you like salty fries you will have to add your own salt. I got the cheeseburger with lettuce, pickle and tomato. The lettuce was crunchy and fresh which I appreciated. The burger was a good size and delicious. We had attentive service and nice experience. Cobb salad is GIGANTIC here! Definitely enough to eat and take home for another meal. Their fries are also generous in portions for price. I've never had an issue with service here and they've got a dedicated parking lot. Great old school diner at has a very classic menu! This pretty low frills, but perfect for a casual bite and perfect for kids! Found out that kids eat free on Monday and tuesday, so can't wait to go back for that. Their servers were all very young, but they did a decent job. We were surprised to find out that they don't stock malt vinegar and we all ordered a full basket of fries which was quite large. I would be a really easy offering to add to the menu. Also, custom dipping sauces like garlic aioli or cheesy sauce to go with the fries would be great! read more

This was just how I remember it!!! Convention grill use to be my favorite place to go when I was a kid so I had to try it out again when it reopened! It feels exactly the same just looks a little cleaned up, maybe new paint? Looks great!!! We all got burgers and shared a regular fry. Hot tip, the regular fries were way too many for 4 people, could have sized down. As I'm gluten free I was excited they had gluten free buns and made my shake without malted milk!! Seriously I was so excited I could have all my faves still. The food prices are amazing but the quality is even better. You can't beat fresh cut fries! I made a custom shake, had to have their famous hot fudge and banana! Wow was it very banana forward but amazing! Make sure you make room for any of their ice cream treats. Cute diner setting. Tried their new bkfst. Delicious! I had Avocado Toast with scrambled eggs and side of greens. Greens were fresh and perfectly dressed. It's a rare thing when a restaurant you love returns from the dead, but that's what happened at Convention Grill. Although it opened in 1934, it closed a few years ago, seemingly forever. However, they are now open at the same location and with what looks to be, the same menu (but with higher prices). Food: Between us, my wife and I had a cheeseburger ($12.90), a hamburger ($11.95) a half order of fries ($7.95), and a chocolate-coffee shake ($9.95). The hamburgers, although not overly large, have a great steak-like taste. The ratio of fat to lean was perfect, as was whatever cuts of beef they use. This is a top-notch burger! There are extra charges for cheese, tomato and lettuce, or any other ingredient. The hamburgers come with sliced pickles and a good-tasting bun. The portion of fries is enormous. We split the half-order and still had half of the huge basket left over. I recommend getting the "side order" fries for $5.95 (enough for two people). I'm sure the "regular size" would feed a little league team. The fries are skinny, skin-on fries that I suspect are fried twice. They have a great potato taste, are served fresh and hot, and are equal to the hamburgers in terms of quality. The shake was tasty, but a bit melty or overly liquid in my opinion. I don't think they are as good as the ones I have at Fifty's Grill, but they are still worth getting. The "large" fills two glasses, so it can be split. Honestly, I struggled with the rating, as to whether to give it four or five stars. For food, service, and ambiance, it deserves five stars. However, I do struggle with the price. For one hamburger, one cheeseburger, French Fries, and a shared milk shake, should this meal be $51.75, including tip and tax? That's a lot of money for lunch, considering what we ordered. I would love to know their prices before the pandemic and see what is the percent increase. Ultimately, I picked five stars because: 1. The quality of the food (and service) is excellent. 2. I would like to see this long-time fan-favorite restaurant do well. 3. The did not include any required junk-fees on the check. I do think it will be interesting as to how "price-elastic" customers are willing to be for eating basics such as hamburgers at a lunch place diner. read more

We popped over to Convention Grill for lunch while working at a coffee shop nearby. My friends had heard that they had a really good burger, so we decided to check them out. The place is really cute, with an old diner feel (including the servers wearing classic uniforms). I ordered the Grilled Cheese Club, which was a triple decker, 3 cheese grilled cheese. It was honestly a lot; I don't know if I would get it again, but it scratched an itch for sure. We also shared a full order of fries, which was massive! They were super crispy & delicious. So, I saw reviews that this place had gone downhill since it reopened. But my parents were in town and they specifically requested Convention Grill. So we went. It was great! Same as it ever was. I still love it. I had a patty melt (which I think had more sauteed onions than they used to put on- huzzah- and my parents each had a cheeseburger, which they really liked. We got an order of fries to share-- they were just like they used to be. And the malts are still wonderful. Service was great. We went at 1 PM on as Saturday and the place was pretty packed, just like it used to be. Go and enjoy, is my advice. read more

We were so excited for the grand re-opening of Convention Grill - it's a neighborhood anchor, and the vibes are so cool! Three stars for a few things. 1. The good: our server, Hazel, was amazing. The fries are out of this world! And though it's been renovated, they kept much of the original decor (including all the mirrors!), and they still grill the food right at the counter. Very cool. 2. The bad: it is LOUD. SO loud. My dad whipped out his decibel app and it read 88 dB - like a rock concert, or standing next to a motorcycle, or a blender. Nearly impossible to have a conversation (and the place wasn't even full!). Our toddler was so overstimulated my husband took her home halfway through the meal. The menu is limited -- if you're not looking for burgers, soup, or salad, your only option is a grilled chicken sandwich. The ice cream in our sundae had freezer burn - not ideal. The prices are a bit high for diner food - our family of 6 ate dinner & 3 of us had desert for $155 including tip. Overall, I'm not sure we'll be back. Snuffy's is just up the road and it's a much more pleasant experience with less tables/more insulation for sound/a more expansive menu! read more

stopped at the "grill" today friday 3.28.25 around 6 pm thinking there would be a line out the door waiting, but no line and plenty of tables were open,ordered 2 bacon cheeseburgers a side of fries and 1 full malt/shake, the bill was over 50$ with tip, fries and malt were great -- seems thay have changed buns which were a bit stiff, chewy and dry with little flavor. The bun was also a fair bit bigger than the burger patty. The burger itself was over cooked, dry and mostly tasteless -- back in the day this place was fantastic-wish it would have been better--still go it's fun to se familys with small kids screaming and having fun. read more

Nice to see the Grill open again as so many of us hope they prosper! We were greeted nicely by the hostess who seated us promptly. Just as efficiently our server...all 6'4" of him, welcomed us, took our drink orders and returned quickly. I ordered the Meatloaf sandwich (see photo) and a Chocolate Malt. Both arrived quickly. While the sandwich was O.K. (served on wheat bread), I'm hopeful next time an "open sandwich with gravy" will be an option. You'll find the staff to be eager and friendly and the restaurant to be very clean. I was so excited to take my family for lunch to celebrate my Mom's birthday. My son has airborne anaphylactic allergies to shellfish and fish, Anaphylactic to nuts,tree nuts and allergic to cows milk protein. Needless to say we rarely go out. I spoke to manager and confirmed no shellfish or fish. He just wanted hamburger and fries we bring our own bun. She said if we are busy it would be hard . I stated it would be too hard for you to clean the grill and use clean utensils. Well she said we can't shut the grill down and we only have one turner for burgers. Should be a 0 star review. Horrible! Terrible! Nothing good to say here. The food itself was disgusting. Absolutely nasty. We asked for a kids burger for my little cousin and it was raw. RAW. Yes raw. Warning to anyone to cut your burgers in half because clearly chefs won't be checking for you. THIS WAS FOR A CHILD. My cousin didn't know and ate some of it and kept saying how nasty it was, when I looked over I wanted to puke. We ordered it cooked fully. Had to say that this place is overhyped. It's nothing better than a basic restaurant with some "history" when presented my food the cheese want melted, the burger was also raw, and despite all that the shakes, fries, and other food just was not worth it. Enter and behold a throwback to the '50's. This is a damn good Americana style burger, fries and malt place that has been an institution since 1934. In fact, I'm guessing not much inside has changed from since inception including the counter grill and the asbestos style floor tiles so popular in days gone by. I've been coming here for 25 years and fully expect to see Norman Rockwell painting something at the counter every time I walk in! There are several things on he menu that are not burger and fries relations such as chili, salads and the like but you can't possibly come here and not order a smashed griddle style burger and a heaping order of Russet, skin on fries. Unless you walk out with chest pain, you have ordered incorrectly. The servers are females in white work dresses that totally fits the interior schtick like you expect to see them working behind a soda fountain counter of a drugstore. They work hard to cover the place but do so politely and I have never had rude service here. Unless you are on a pro-obesity plan or are a Sumo wrestler, I would recommend not ordering a full shake/malt or a full order of fries. The full orders are huge and if you managed to finish them by yourself, I would bet your health plan would cancel your policy if they ever found out. For the money, I still think the Convention Grill makes some of the best burgers and fries in town. read more

I remember coming to the Convention Grill in high school (50 years ago). The ambiance still has the vibe of the original restaurant, with a spotless contemporary cleanliness; no greasy spoon here. The dinner crowd bustled with big young families of happy, wriggling loud kids, and smaller tables of mixed generations. Staff was courteous and used modern gadgets like handheld ordering tablets that also complete credit card payments at the table. Now, about the food, I regret that it did not live up to my memories. I ordered a cheeseburger (meh), a generous order of fries which were pretty good and a full size chocolate malted milk that tasted neither malty nor very chocolatey. My friend thought it was soft-serve; I doubt that, but it didn't seem to be hand scooped either... and for $9.95 I expected morsels of malt at the bottom of the tin. For years to come, this upscale neighborhood will likely continue to make memories at The Convention Grill, while SW high students, like I once was, might opt for less costly after school nosh. read more
