My wife and I went in to look at baseboard options prepared to buy for our entire house since we recently replaced our floors. Their showroom was empty with no other customers. There was 1 person being helped at their counter. They had at least 3 people working and not one of them even acknowledged we had walked in. We wandered around feeling a bit lost with lots of questions. We were there approx. 10-15 minutes and still no one helped or said a word of greeting. From our observation, their selection was the same as another local company who we had a much better customer experience with and we will be going back to them. I came here about 10 years ago to get some ideas about mounting a breakfast bar area in my kitchen. They were great, explaining things, talking through options, how much weight they would hold, etc. I ended up buying three large pieces, but it was still a small order. Well, fast forward, and I go in to ask about ideas for another small project - I'm told they can't help, that should talk to my designer or my contractor. Guess what? Like a LOT of others in Portland, I go DIY whenever possible and rely on specialists to help figure out what options are available and practical. This is my second time posting this after Yelp took it down saying I was not a customer. Hereby let it be known Yelp HQ that I am a paying customer of McCoy, and I was dismayed and heartbroken at my latest visit. This is in the wake of continuing and mounting gun violence resulting in mass murder of children and innocents (El Paso, etc.) I wondered why would a local family business openly support automatic assault riffles? I go there for lumber not ammo for the AR-15 killing machine... but their front desk proudly wear "Oregunian" apparel emboldened with this intimidating assault riffle. Look, I completely understand people have a right to their opinions and belief systems, but this seems tone deaf at the moment and probably not really the domain of a millwork business in downtown Portland. Maybe this is just a few employees, but shouldn't you, the owners, be aware of what they, if not you, are promoting in your business? Please sell lumber. My husband and I stopped in yesterday to look at some beadboarding for our kitchen remodel..and we were not greeted/ignored as we waited patiently at the counter ...and later greeted snottily and ignored. Not sure where those previous reviewers shopped- we've been here twice recently and staff was helpful, friendly and not at all pretentious. We were looking to match trims on a 90 year old building (not an easy task). Online catalog is super detailed and we jumped for joy to see the profiles we thought were unobtainable are still in production at McCoy! Took in our snig-snaggety pieces of old trim into this fine establishment and they fixed us up with an exact match. Prices were much better than the local competition (we checked) but the lengths can be random so it takes some figuring to get what you need without wasting. My dear hubby is never one to make a quick decision in finalizing a purchase and they've been so patient and professional each visit. Add in a sweet dog, a dinosaur busting through the wall, free local coffee, and all the vintage trim your heart desires and you got a winner in my book! read more

When it came time to replace the porch floor on our 1920's house, we knew we wanted quality lumber. Luckily, our window guy told us about McCoy. The tongue and groove lumber we got is gorgeous, and went in beautifully. They were very helpful and attentive as we shopped for a mantle and later ordered trim pieces for the house. There was a delivery problem with the mantle and Caitlin did a great job doing everything possible to address the issue. Things like that happen. What's important is how they treated us when there was a problem and we are very satisfied with what they did. Oh, and the mantle is outstanding. The craftsmanship and wood is beautiful! read more

Beware women - if you don't like to be man-splained, I would recommend going elsewhere. While their products are beautiful, my recent experience there was very frustrating. The older gentleman who helped us made a patronizing comment when I started giving him too much information at once. I let my husband take over the conversation because I was annoyed. Later, when the employee gave us some contractor names, he seemed surprised that I had already talked to them and had specific feedback about one of them. This business needs to realize that it's usually the women in the home whom makes a lot of the remodeling decisions. read more

I've done a few purchases of molding materials from Mccoy both before the Covid restrictions and after, each time the sales persons I worked with were friendly and accommodating for a non-contractor like myself. I needed the items shipped to Vancouver, WA and they were able to get them over here no problem in timely manner, even helped me load the materials into my garage. They're a bit pricier than your big box store, but the materials are so much nicer and the shipping was really pretty reasonable. As a stair builder I need a location to send my clients to see samples of stair parts and systems. McCoy's has a huge showroom for stair parts and moldings. If you need ideas on what to do with your stairs this is the place to visit. They can also recommend carpenters and contractors for you projects or help the DIY'ers. We were looking for ideas for our fireplace mantel and the big guy with little circular black glasses insulted my wife when she asked "what types of modern or contemporary ledges do you have?". He responded by saying "you need to have a better idea about what your looking for before you come in here!" Also - for specializing in mantels and other wood materials, they had a pretty poor selection (only 6 different mantels to choose from). Go somewhere with nicer staff and better selection. read more

Preface this review by saying I've been a woodworker since I was a wee lad, built custom furniture, and have done the majority of remodeling to our 1920's bungalow myself including major kitchen and bath projects. So over the years, I've shopped many times at McCoy Millwork as they have a great selection of period moldings in a wide array of species, often in stock, that are hard to find elsewhere. In previous years the customer service was great, but in my last two trips there in the last couple months, I literally have felt I had to beg them to take my money. One of the guys was nice enough and helpful but seemed exhausted about answering simple questions about what was in stock and what was a custom order. As someone else mentioned, the other fellow with the round glasses, seemed like he was trying to put on a 'Ron Swanson' affect but really came off like an arrogant misanthrope that thinks if you aren't trade, you don't belong there. Anyway, I took my business down the road to Woodcrafters who were extremely friendly, helpful and who I will be going to from here on out. read more

Having been a carpenter since the early '80s I have shopped in just about all the lumberyards around and McCoy Millwork is my favorite, hands down. The salespeople have always been friendly, attentive, refreshingly knowledgeable and will find the hard to get specialty items. They have always understood what is I am looking for.
