I drove out of the way to find this bakery. It was rather chaotic no one seemed to know what they were doing. Some staff were grumpy and some cheerful but clueless. Really nice the way it is set up and decorated inside. Wide range of yummy looking food. Our initial impression was quite positive. However, the staff was not friendly nor attentive. My wife sat at the counter staring at a young woman who completely ignored her even when she tried to get her attention. The lady behind the counter with pastries and register acted like I was waiting there because I had nothing else to do. It was really odd for being a small town business. My wife's eggnog latte was delicious according to her. I got drip coffee which looked like tea as soon as I poured it into my cup self serve. This place is SOOO GOOOOOD!! I've been gluten free for a quite a while now and this was the best GF food I've had. I've even eaten at a few dedicated GF places around the country, and this really is - hands down - the most delicious I've had. You can tell it's homemade and not just churned out and reheated. My wife and I had lunch and got a cinnamon roll for later and oh my god. Everything was wonderful, the people who work there are incredibly friendly, and the place is cute. My wife is not gluten free and she said everything was great and that the cinnamon roll is just as good as any wheat version. That cinnamon roll! I hadn't been able to have a cinnamon roll in years. My pulled pork sandwich was fantastic (and the snickerdoodle that came with it - heaven!!). It's so nice to be able to eat at a bakery/restaurant without worrying about getting sick or having to ask the waitstaff to change every little thing so that I can eat it. We first went to 5 Bs last summer. We checked it out due to its high ratings. When we got there the place was packed but it was worth the wait. At that time the menu was up on the wall over the baked goods case. There was an offering of different sweet and savory baked goods as well as sandwiches made with fresh baked bread. We ended up having a couple of sandwiches and some cookie chasers....all of which were excellent. Fast forward to this visit. It was a warmer than normal sunny February day so we made the hour drive from Bellingham. The first thing we noticed was the restaurant was empty....at noon....on Sunday. Due to the weather there were people out...just not at 5 Bs. When we walked in the first thing we noticed was the menu on the wall was covered. When I asked at sandwiches I was told, "We are moving away from that." That left us with the pre made items in the baked good cases. I ordered a couple of bacon/sausage egg cup things an my wife some quiche. We were asked if we wanted them heated up. When I said yes the promptly threw the food in a microwave under the counter. The food came out lukewarm and rubbery as expected. My wife ordered a cup of mushroom soup. We were done with our other food before it arrived at our table. Sort of perplexing since a microwave seems to be the primary heating device at 5 Bs. The soup was watery. My wife did not finish the cup. I am not sure if this is a low traffic winter thing. It may be because they had no coffee made when the customers behind us ordered a couple of cups. The woman behind the counter said something about making a pot and not enough people wanting it so they had to throw it out. Anyway....no coffee where there are pastries is sort of weird. In their defense there were espresso drinks. As I said, we loved this place the first time around. That is why we came back. This time....not so much. If this is in fact a "winter thing" I get it to a certain extent...except for the microwave use. COVID was going on the last time we're were there so nothing has changed on that front. I am definitely not trying to kick a business if they are down, but Yelp and Google still have pics of the full menu and the items on it, much of which is not available. Since many people use Yelp/Google to help them choose where to eat I decided to write this review so if they were looking for lunch they did not experience what we did. This is a gluten free cafe that's practically in the boonies. It is a real treat for those with diet sensitivities traveling through the Cascade Mts and specifically trekking to/from North Cascades NP. The hash was tasty. The raspberry twist pastry was not so. The ham sandwich yes. This was my first time (as a non-gluten-sensitive) eating GF bread. It wasn't bad, actually ok or good (I'm sure it was amazing actually). They also offer some loose teas. Yay for traveling tea drinkers like me!!! Service was pretty friendly, but they keep to themselves and don't engage you after you've ordered. As a solo traveler I wouldn't have minded, but didn't want to interfere with their duties, but seemed there was a lot of drama happening with staffing which the staff were ironing out among themselves. read more

If you are driving along Highway 20 through the North Cascades, plan around making this a must stop. Gourmet breakfasts, lunches, and pastries. I ordered a grilled cheese with my choice of three different cheeses, plus avocado and bacon, and finished with a "Death by Chocolate" dessert - they were superb. This place is the NICEST dedicated gluten-free bakery / eatery I have ever been to in my life. (Mind you I've lived in all four corners of the US in major metropolitan areas and have been to many a gluten-free bakery). The decor is so inviting and incredibly well done. The people working there are SO kind. EVERYTHING is gluten-free. And they have ingredient lists for EVERYTHING, so just ask. I felt so well taken care of when we stopped in yesterday after a hike. We picked up some gluten-free waffle cones (which are THE BEST and I had known about previously bc my girlfriend comes here as often as possible JUST for their cones) and I am so excited to be able to go back to Seattle, bring my cone to Molly's and have a ice cream CONE with my friends. What a luxury! I also picked up some graham crackers for some future smores. I haven't had a full on smore since going gluten free over 8 years ago. What you should know: - Totally worth the drive if you're coming here for this. - Just drive through Concrete (it has one main drag and there's basically nothing there) and you'll find it - They've got a bunch of other food too, so stop for lunch, coffee, or just a snack! - Selection is really fantastic and people who can eat regular food will have no problem with how the gluten-free food tastes here - Call ahead to see if they have any cones left! Bacon chicken cheddar panini on thin focaccia with a bowl of chili was great and very large portion. Girlfriend got a byo grilled cheese with Gouda Swiss pepper jack bacon and jalapeños. The older woman that works there was definitely overwhelmed and didn't like there being more than a few people in line. She liked to shout at people coming in versus greeting them. Also felt the need to be super polite and nice to the two girls in front of us but completely rude to me and my fiancé for no reason. I guess I should be happy they're open and thriving with COVID going on, but obviously we're from out of town and don't live here. At least try a little with the customer service - it goes a long way and I wouldn't have felt the need to write this review as I sit in the parking lot annoyed that such a cute place has rude people working at it. I'll wait forever for anything as long as the people who work there are nice. We waited forever for two drinks that were super mediocre and also weren't made in order. I've been here twice, first for a variety of baked goods and second today for lunch. (and more baked goods). Our group had: Sausage quiche/salad chicken salad sandwich grilled cheese sandwich Broccoli cheese soup Pecan Pie macaroons various cookies We all shared with one another so I got to try all of the above. Portions are very decent and ingredients are top quality. No brown or limp lettuce, or fatty chicken in the salad. The sandwiches came on wonderful, lightly toasted bread and were quite tasty not soggy and tired. The pecan pie was marvelous. Lots of nuts and not too sweet. We were wandering around that area for a day out and stumbled on this place and decided to stop just because we were starving. I really didn't think we'd find anything decent in Concrete. As we were ordering our custom grilled cheese sandwiches to go, I noticed the entire place was gluten-free. I will admit, my thought was immediately, "These are going to be horrible." Honestly, if I hadn't seen that everything was gluten-free, I would have never known it. The sandwich was DELICIOUS (adding bacon and grilled onions really turned it into a grown-up grilled cheese). The bread felt and tasted just like regular bread. The cookies were just like any other cookie. We were pleasantly surprised when we got into the car and opened our bags and found a paper container with carrot sticks, a slice of watermelon and a cookie on top. We hadn't expected that. And, the best part was that my bag had my favorite cookie in it and my husband's bag had his favorite cookie in it. It's like they know us.... The staff is friendly - we had lovely chats while we were waiting. The place is clean and so cute and the food is delicious! They have become experts at gluten-free. Recently moving to Concrete from Southern California I have to say this place is a shining star in the town. This little town has a lot of potential but most of the places around look worn down and tired. 5B's is well kept and is an attractive little place. The food there is pretty solid for being Gluten Free. I'm not one that needs to avoid Gluten, but my mother is not. Ironically, I told my mom about this place (prior to my first visit there), letting her know there was a Gluten Free bakery right near my house, so she had something to look forward to. Little did I know that she had already contacted them a week earlier since it was the only bakery around and she wanted a cake to be delivered to me as a surprise. And it was a surprise. They delivered a delicious cheese cake to my door for my birthday. It was easily within the top two cheese cakes I've ever had. They were so helpful with my family when it came to making the arrangements. I just ate breakfast there a couple of weeks ago. Fairly priced and okay on the portions. I would say I'd like a bit more seasoning on the potatoes but other than that, I can't complain. read more

I really don't like having to leave a negative review but I'm a local and I've given this place many chances to live up to the hype. Hands down, they make the best pie crust I've ever tasted and there are several other foods I enjoy. But the service is beyond terrible. The staff is too small to handle the crowds that come here, particularly on Sunday mornings. I've ordered food here several times, sometimes as simple as an item from the bakery cases that just needs to be warmed up, and waited as others were served first. The food is frequently cold in the middle and if it's freshly made it's often barely warm by the time I've gotten my plate. I understand food service is fast paced and many customers are impatient. I'm not that customer. Today was my breaking point, as I watched an unclaimed latte without a lid sit on the counter as an unmasked man, apparently a friend of the barista, leaned over said counter and breathed and spit all over near the latte. Even under non-COVID guidelines this is not a sanitary food practice. When this was brought to the barista's attention we were told "it's a free country" and several other customers attempted to harass us, even after pointing out concern for the owner of the latte that was being breathed/spit on. I loved everything about 5b's! First off, I went with amazing weather outside so I got to sit outside on the patio and enjoy the view of the gorgeous greenery and mountains around. As I entered 5b's I immediately fell in love with the diner. There's an incredible coffee and juice bar, as well as another bar with all of the food and pastry options. I ordered the Panini with Grilled Chicken and Bacon, that was delicious and made me so happy with a surprise cookie that came with the meal. I also enjoyed a yummy Cappuccino after my meal. The place is beautiful, neat, and clean. The food is delicious, and there are many options. The coffee is grand, and worth going for. This place is a hidden gem in the mountains. I should state first off that 5Bs Bakery & Eatery is a dedicated gluten-free facility. That said, hubby had a honey bun & I had a mocha coffee. I spoke with Em to learn what flour blends they used that I could eat, since I'm allergic to most things gluten-free. Learned their buttermilk pancake blend has brown rice flour & potato starch (big no's for me), and their griddle cakes had banana (also a big no). Hence, only one of us could enjoy their offerings, which he said was worth the trip. Sad thing is I left itching, whether from physical or psych reaction, I don't know. I've eaten here twice in the past two years. From that you get a sense that I am not overwhelmed. My first experience was breakfast and I came away totally unimpressed. The food just wasn't very good. My second visit was for a late lunch with a large group of extended family; ten in all. The small staff did a good job trying to get food out in a timely fashion. For that I give them props. I'm not a big fan of gluten free, nor do I have a gluten problem. All their food is advertised gluten free! Quite an accomplishment for a bakery. However, here's the problem; gluten free bread just isn't that good in my opinion. That said, my three-cheese, grilled cheese sandwich was really good. The tomato basil soup I ordered with it was not. It was not creamy in the least; something I expect in tomato basil soup. It also is rather expensive. A whole sandwich and a small bowl of soup is $13.50. So, to recap, first visit was one star - a bust and the second visit was three stars, providing an average of two stars. I haven't been to Concrete in about 4 years and this definitely wasn't here the last time. I am happy we drove past it and came back for breakfast the next day. Everything is gluten free, not that I need to be, but they just are, so FYI. Cutest place ever. It was a modern version of an old country diner I feel. There is a nice bar seating area, some booths, and big long tables in the center. Outdoor seating as well, but it was a little cold and cloudy on the day we came. Anyway, you order everything up at the counter and then it gets delivered to you at your table. Anyway, my husband and I both got these English muffin sandwiches (consist of poached egg and meat and maybe cheese?). We both got them with bacon. They were pretty good - needed a little salt, but overall pretty decent. The muffin was a little nutty or grainy and I enjoyed that. The hash was really really good. Cut up in to small pieces (I hate fat pieces of taters), so that was nice. Colorful :) Everything seemed so fresh. We also both got mochas and they were HUGE! Very good. For gluten-free and everything being really fresh and homemade the prices were very decent. I think our meal was only about $6, maybe like $6.50, but that's a steal. You can barely get a meal for that much at a diner like Denny's, nevermind a healthy meal like this. I was impressed. Obviously they had a lot of sweet treats, but we didn't get any of those. We also saw 5b's at Lake Tyee the following day. They had a booth there with baked goods. Whenever we're visiting we will definitely stop in. Great place! read more

Terrific Bakery and Lunch with a true French flare to everything. The Macaroons are spectacular and huge. Warm and friendly service and everything was exceptionally clean. We stopped by this bakery about 2:30 on a Wednesday afternoon. The selection was not very impressive. I decided on a cinnamon bun instead of a cookie or brownie (That's about all there was). I'm sorry to report it was dry and kind of bland. I took a couple of bites and tossed the rest. My brother said the same thing about the brownie.
